It's November 2023, and the world's most successful compilation series is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Five decades of compiling the latest hits, the occasional miss, but always the songs that soundtracked our lives. Always there, always democratically and expertly sequencing the music that the UK buying (downloading/streaming/swiping) public were grooving to, laughing to, dancing along with, or crying about (add in your own band or artists here). What else is still with us from 1983? And still having such an impact?Breakfast Time? Well, certainly not Frank Bough. The Ford Sierra? Taxi!£1 coins? Down the back of the sofa.Kajagoogoo? Hush hush, as they say. (One for the older listeners)So, as our friends at NOW rightly celebrate the past through a stunning array of special albums and even see podcasters pop up across several TV programmes waxing lyrically about the famous compilation series (well, no-one else will talk about it, will they?) the numbered series that started it all in November 1983 continued to do exactly what it set out to do; bring together the songs of NOW.Perhaps no longer just the Top Chart Hits, that tag line that emblazoned the front cover of earlier volumes, but now taking into account the various ways we actually DO consume music in the third decade of the 21st century.NOW 116 - The Best of the Best.47 tracks. Tik Tok stars, Film soundtrack anthems, legendary decade surviving artists. Pop, rock, dance, soul. All present and correct, all breathlessly exciting, all taking that snapshot in time of pop culture. And as we know, an invaluable window into the soundtrack of our lives.Where, indeed, Agnetha, do we go from here?To understand the past and the future, we always need to be in the NOW. (Take a note of that line, its a good one: Ed)And joining me to make sense of this dazzling volume of the world famous compilation series is award winning writer, journalist and NOW fan David Quantick.David explains why he wanted to get in 'at the deep end' and why he thinks that NOW116 highlights that pop is in a fine healthy state in. We explore what actually is a 'hit' in 2023/24, why short songs are always an indication of great songs, why NOW continues to keep getting it right and how the compilation series is Top Of The Pops in exile.Along the way, discover who David describes as 'the Dr. Who of Pop', who are 'The Strokes for Queen fans (or was that the other way around)' and what a bad AI version of George Michael may look (and sound) like. We also revisit why Pop continues to Eat Itself (yes, David came up with that one!), why the female artists are leaving the boys behind, who the 'ASDA Madonna' is and who the real Madonna is. And did Chris Lowe really offer Tracey Chapman a lift in 1988?We really do (watch what I do here) Paint The Town Red!Jump in, buckle up and remind yourself why pop is still very, very important. In 1989, Lou Reed released his tour de force, “New York”.   Many see this album as part of Reed's holy trinity of spectacular albums - “Velvet Underground & Nico”, “Berlin” and “New York”. Commercially & artistically successful, this album took everything back to basics, and Reed himself was quoted as saying, “This is as good as it gets – two guitars, bass and drums”. Mick and Jeff both love this late-career revival album for its strong songs, caustic lyrics, perfect observations and great word play. This deals with the "everyday" – domestic violence, child abuse, corruption, politics – and it's grittier for that reality.   The album you must hear before you die is 1988's self-titled “Tracey Chapman”.  This album, very different to what was on the charts at the time, received 6 Grammy Award nominations, winning 3. The big hit from this album was “Fast Car", which sold strongly around the world, and still features in lists of the Greatest Songs of All Time.  Needless to say, Mick and Jeff think it's a terrific single on a terrific album   Jeff leaps into the world of fashion with tips on the biggest style trends for men in 2023.  The boys talk about Abbey Road and Star Wars parody T-shirts, with Mick's Peruvian t-shirt featuring llamas crossing the famous road. Welcome back to another episode of Riot Act, a podcast about music. This week Steve is once again joined by Sam Sleight to chat about all the big issues and events over the last week. There's new albums from The Callous Daoboys, JID and 156/Silence to get through, there's also some pretty depressing news from various angles regarding Scott Kelly's disgraced retirement from music, Pras from The Fugees getting tied up in a money laundering scandal, fire starting destruction at Reading and Leeds festivals and... this isn't so bad, Cradle of Filth and Ed Sheeran's collab effort drawing ever closer. We then look back at the Human Rights Now! tour, which began on this day back in 1988 and featured a bill of Bruce Springsteen and The E-Street Band, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Tracey Chapman and more. All put on to raise awareness of Amnesty International, which it succeeded in doing in spectacular fashion. We track the progress of the ambitious tour and look at the genesis of the Benefit Concert, from Handel playing Messiah for a children's charity back in the 18th century, to Ariana Grande's One Love for Manchester concert set up in the aftermath of the terror attack on her Manchester Arena show in 2017. With so much “bad” happening right now, ranging from the Invasion of Ukraine to the rage over abortion again taking center stage in America, let's escape for a few minutes and talk about something less important, seemingly trivial, yet necessary to confront. The Major League Baseball and National Football League Hall of Fames are the most coveted and noteworthy Halls in all of America. There's a Hall for almost every interest, ranging from croquet to paper. I'm not sure why we need an Insurance Hall of Fame, but I sure am glad there's the AVN Hall of Fame, which honors the best of the best in the porn industry. I suppose there's a reason why the Mascot Hall exists, so too the Quilters, Scuba Divers, and Internet Halls of Fame. All of which makes the most embarrassing Hall of Fame of them all so shameful. You see, the Basketball Hall of Fame actually inducts people that have something to do with the game; either as a player, coach, or even referee of the game of basketball. The AVN Hall of Fame includes porn stars, directors, and even companies that directly play a role in making world class pornography. The debate over what exactly a genre of music is defined as has raged since the first caveman uttered out the original version of Ooooooga-Booooga. Just recently on the RAD show, we debated what exactly defines “Classic Rock,” music; is it age? Feel? Sound? Can Grunge be Classic Rock since Grunge, at its' height, was played endlessly on every mainstream rock station in America? Are hair bands classic rock? What about bands like Linkin Park, who were at their peak 20 years ago?One thing that was never debated was whether or not Janet Jackson belongs to the category. Do you know why? Because she clearly has nothing at all whatsoever to do with rock music. Oh sure, occasionally a rock artist will find their way to the pop category with a certain song, or specific sound. Aerosmith has charted on the Billboard Hot 100 more than once, Journey a dozen times, and the aforementioned Linkin Park a half dozen times, all while also being played on Rock stations. But never have you once turned on a self-respecting rock station, whether it be classic, mainstream, grunge, or anything in between and heard Madonna. And yet, somehow, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame includes both Janet Jackson and Madonna amongst its' inductees. Not to mention James Taylor, Abba, Donna Summer, Run DMC, Bill Withers, Public Enemy, and NWA. Jesus jumped-up Christ.I realize this complaint is neither unique nor new; people have been arguing about how in the world pop and rap stars are in any way deserving of being enshrined alongside the inarguables like Zeppelin, The Beatles, Pink Floyd and the like since the Hall began. And of course, there's the annual list of bands that aren't in the Hall, which, when compared to knowing Abba and NWA are in, makes the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame lose all credibility. Somehow, Madonna and Donna Summer are in, but Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Pantera, Stone Temple Pilots and even Ozzy Freaking Osbourne (as a solo artist) aren't!Nothing has been more embarrassing and telling than the 2022 inductees for the shear whiplash you get from imaging how the extremes on each side could ever possibly be uttered in the same sentence as “rock and roll.” The only acts that belong amongst this year's inductees are Judas Priest and Pat Benatar. The absurdity of Harry Belafonte, Carly Simon, Duran Duran, and The Eurythmics speak for themselves. But the three points on the triangle that level waste to this garbage hall are Eminem, Lionel Richie, and Dolly Parton. Yes, Dolly Parton, whose only association with this genre of music is a lyric in one of her songs in which she says “I'm a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll,” which she sang in a COUNTRY song (and it was a remake of Donny and Marie's biggest hit…also, not rock and roll artists). All of this would be a non-issue if they would have named the Hall what it clearly is; The Musical Performers Hall of Fame. There's nothing at all “Rock and Roll” about so many of the inductees that it's both an insult to the genre, and a slap in the face at some of the greatest musical performers of all time who AREN'T in. After all, if somehow NWA and Public Enemy are in the Hall, how is Snoop Dogg not? Or Mariah Carey, for that matter? And don't get me started on the fact that what is supposed to be the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is in one of America's worst cities, Cleveland, and for no legitimate reason at all whatsoever. Juts because Drew Carey sang “Cleveland Rocks,” doesn't make it true. Other than Nine Inch Nails and Joe Walsh, nothing resembling rock has come out of that sewer by the Cuyahoga River, unless of course you consider Tracey Chapman and her depressing ass “fast Car,” Rock and Roll, which the Hall of Fame probably will soon. Pathetic.See? Wasn't that a fun few minutes? Isn't it nice to occasionally get all ginned up over something meaningless, yet not? Now, you may resume worrying about soaring prices, Roe versus Wade, Covid, masks, the legitimacy of the 2020 election, the current President's mental state, war in Europe, the baby formula shortage, hepatitis in children, the soaring crime rate, record-high illegal immigration, The Johnny Depp/Amber Heard cringeworthy trial, the popularity of Doctor Strange and what it says about our society, and why the UFC scale wasn't working properly this weekend. In his best Tony Greig voice, Billy Birmingham said “A grudge is nothing more than a place to park your car.” We respectfully disagree. Time to Restump preview podcast Saturday night's much anticipated grudge match!Yes Ok, there are four points on offer and we don't want to take our eyes off the bigger picture prize…. but great meaningful entertaining long-term rivalries are built on stubbornly held grudges… so look out apron-string boy! There's a bit of a nostalgic old school Freo about this upcoming game. Sean Darcy making his intentions public and coach JL saying you should hand in your membership if you're not filthy on Cez! (Well that's what I read between JL's lines… the inference was there!)Prime time Saturday night, us and the Blues at similar developmental stages, both four and one, Jack Newnes is playing and Cez had the audacity to recently state he wanted to be part of building something from the ground up! We're one win and four losses in our last five encounters and haven't beaten them since 2018. And let's also not forget round 3 last year when the Blues deliberately singled out, took to and viciously bullied Andy Brayshaw!  All the above plays a complimentary and respectful role, adding to the emotional and inspiring experience of the Len Hall game and the Anzac Day weekend. It promises to be one special occasion. While we were singling the Blues over the losses of Angus Young and Tracey Chapman, it isn't music to our ears! Their absence will seriously hurt us against Carlton's powerful forward line. But Griffin Logue's inclusion down back and a returning Sargent Schultz putting anything in blue under pressure up forward, has somewhat changed our tune. Is Carlton's naming of Paddy Crips a ruse? One week for a hamstring? Are the Blue baggers playing funny blue buggers? We're buzzing with anticipation and just can't sit still waiting for this game to come around! Plenty more to go over though, matchups, selection chatter, coaches covid, Lobby, Sonny and Alex Pearce. We touch on the umpiring debacle without animated arm and hand movements and then we round it out with a listener's question in the juggernaut that is the “Ask Jojo” segment. So, pick up your plugs, put em in your ports and piers, press play on this hour of purple poppycock and join us potting that punk who pinched our pesos, played us and pi55ed off! (You have to ask the question... how much nonsense can two people come up with!)Whatever the case…. We can't wait for Saturday night. Get in Freo!

E101 - We had the honor of interviewing esteemed jazz, rock, and R&B drummer Steve Ferrone. You have definitely heard his work - just look at this bio below. In this recording, he gets candid about love, family, dalliances, the rock and roll lifestyle, and explains some life changes he has made for the better. We learn about the mods and rockers of Brighton Beach in the 60’s and how Steve’s first blues band opened for The Who. Steve and Julianne talk shop regarding syncopation and style - Pretty Purdie, Steve Gadd, and Led Zeppelin to name a few. When asked about nerves, traveling, and groupies, we heard some funny, surprising stories! Duran Duran played a big role during Stephen’s busiest year, when he also played with George Harrison, Eric Clapton, and was in the Saturday Night Live band. We figured out the connection between Questlove and Average White Band. And Julianne’s Unchained questions inspire a great Johnny Cash impression! Find out which soap opera Steve was in, which musicians and moments rendered him star-struck, including recalling what it was like to record at Abbey Road. We also hear the amazing story of Prince performing George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” during his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fans of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers wrote in some questions, so we find out about a reunion, conflict, grief, what life was really like in the band, and insight into the person that Tom Petty was. Steve has played with Average White Band, Chaka Khan, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Duran Duran, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Whitney Houston, Johnny Cash, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Dire Straits, Aerosmith, Morrissey-Mullen, Bee Gees, Cyndi Lauper, Bette Midler, Stevie Nicks, Paul Simon, Steve Winwood, Tracey Chapman, Mick Jagger, George Benson, Peter Frampton, Anita Baker, Bryan Ferry, Rick James, Slash, Scritti Politti, Pooh and more.  You can watch this episode on our Mouse and Weens YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgeuFSExQ2EaHYSG-s4sgZw The original full length version of this interview is on https://www.patreon.com/mouseandweens Find Steve at The New Guy Show on Sirius XM’s Tom Petty Radio https://www.siriusxm.com/channels/tom-petty-radio Facebook: The New Guy Show with Steve Ferrone https://www.facebook.com/The-New-Guy-Show-with-DJ-Steve-Ferrone-on-Tom-Petty-Radio-1245914005441918 https://steveferrone.com Join Facebook Fan Pages at: Tom Petty Nation, Steve Ferrone Fans Song credits: “Steve’s Strutt” (c) Stephen Ferrone. Matty Libatique is truly one of the greatest cinematographers I have had the chance to work with throughout my career. Matty comes from a Filipino background but was born in New York City in Elmhurst in the borough of Queens. His father, Justiniano Libatique, was an amateur photographer and worked in a film laboratory in New York. As a kid growing up in New York, his dad gifted Matty a Nikon and taught him photography fundamentals at an age when he did not realize he would be using this knowledge for his entire career. During his University years he studied sociology and communications at Cal State Fullerton and then went to AFI for an MA in Cinematography. In this podcast we talked about his journey to become the great cinematographer he is today including his career long collaboration with Darren Aronofsky going back to when they were students at AFI and working with great DP’s like Ed Lachman, a very important mentor for Matty. We also talked about some of his other collaborations with directors like Joel Schumacher, Spike Lee, Jon Favreau, Ernest Dickerson, Bradley Cooper, Rashid Johnson, Mathieu Kassovitz and many others…. As a cinematographer, he is one of the great pioneers of manipulating the photochemical process for extreme dramatic effect by using lab processing techniques like Cross Process & Skip Bleach. He is one of a small group of bold DP’s that were the original trailblazers that experimented frequently with using the cross process and skip bleach process in the work including Malik Sayeed, Harris Savides, Bob Richardson, Darius Khonji and Ellen Kuras to name a few. He has Academy Award nominations for Black Swan and A Star is Born and has many festival wins for films including Spirit Awards for Requiem For a Dream and Black Swan. His parents, Justiniano Libatique and Georgina Porter are immigrants from the Philippines. Matty’s Filipino heritage is very important to him. He speaks and understands Tagalog and comes from French heritage on his paternal side. Throughout his career he has shot many important music videos including the 1998 Jay-Z video Ja Rule & Amil: Can I Get A….. directed by Steve Carr and also the Tracey Chapman video with Julie Dash directing called Give Me One Reason. We know when it comes to using someone's intellectual property the rule is always seek permission. Well, this week I've read two cases of artists who did, in fact, seek permission BUT when their request was met with denial they moved forward anyway. Choosing to ask forgiveness instead. Case 1. Kendrick Lamar and SZA's All The Stars music video uses visual artist Lina Iris Viktor. Viktor stated in an interview with the New York Times that she was contacted twice by Black Panther representative about using her work in the promotional material for the film however she didn't like the terms and declined. Fast forward one month. She noticed her signature gold patterned style in a 19-second scene in the All The Stars video. Case 2. Nicki Minaj leaks her track with Nas that uses Tracey Chapman's Baby Can I Hold You. The song was supposed to be on her new album but was pulled because she couldn't clear the sample. Fast forward a few months and Nicki allegedly leaked the song to Funkmaster Flex who teased it on his social media before playing on air that night. After that it was a wrap. The song was picked up on another station and soon made its way around the internet. This brings us to the Atlanta rap group Migos is being sued for copyright infringement for their song "Walk it Like I Talk it" by rapper M.O.S. He claims the group stole the hook from a song he wrote and published 10 years ago. It's important to note that after he heard Migos version of the song he filed his copyright. Then he filed his lawsuit. Remember, you cannot file a copyright infringement lawsuit without a federally registered copyright. Top 3 Takeaways 1. File your copyright before you publish if possible but definitely before the infringement. 2. Moving forward using someone's copyrighted work after they told you no is evidence of willful infringement. 3. Willful infringement can hurt your pockets and get you locked up Remember if this episode made you say, mmm I didn't know that make sure to subscribe, rate, and invite your business besties and tribe to catch next week's episode. On Monday, August 18th, they all melted back into America after witnessing legendary performances by, among others, the Who, Santana, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Joe Cocker, Sly and the Family Stone, Jimi Hendrix and, in only their second live show together, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Neil is a folk, blues and country inspired artist originally from Scotland but now living in Sheffield. Appreciated by BBC Radio 2, 6Music and XFM, the Guardian compared Neil’s voice to ‘a male Tracey Chapman’. He has released three studio albums and has supported Richard Hawley on tour across Europe. In this video, Neil will discuss his lyric writing, suggest good subjects for songs, explain the origins of one of his own songs and the tricks he uses to appeal to listeners.

James and Brian, although having never met before, instantly bond. They both, albeit at different times, played poker at the legendary Mayfair Club and relive some of those great stories.   As Brian says, "You'd leave early in the morning either with a gangsters roll in your pocket or knowing you'd just lost... but somehow as you'd walk out, four, four-thirty, five in the morning and get into a gypsy cab... something just felt right in the world..."   The Mayfair Club was Brian and his writing partner David Levien's inspiration for the hit movie Rounders starring Matt Damon.   Brian attributes a lot of his success to his ADHD. He's able to laser focus in things that fascinate him. When he came across the singer-songwriter Tracey Chapman, he was hooked. She had something very special and he "knew it." But "knowing it" and getting her to believe he knew it and that he could help her took years of hard work. She originally said no a hundred times in a row.   You've got to listen to Brian's story about Phillip Roth and the elevator... It's a classic.   They dive deep into the question of how can you turn off that voice inside you that tells you that you suck.   Put some kind of practice into your life; walk, exercise, meditate, whatever... as long as it works for you, do it.   This is a great interview... one of James' all-time best. ------------What do YOU think of the show? Hold onto your hats! Dr Norman Trousers and River Zambezi return for Episode 3! In this episode: Dr Norman channels Dustin Hoffman in "Outbreak"; River refuses to agree that Tracey Chapman could have been a man, when our hosts discuss an unfortunate drinking incident in Prague; We discover that Dr Norman has spent far too much time deliberating on the gravity of the situation when a superhero is struck with explosive diarrhoea; Finally we are introduced (for one time only) to a new segment in the show: "Desert Island Dicks", where we find out that River hates Bieber as much as Dr Norman hates Jordan. (not the country or the basketball player).

How does a Revolution Sound? Tracey Chapman may say it sounds like a whisper, but girlfriend that whisper has become a roar! It is not just about the bread lines, nor about a simple regime change, the World is crying out for Democracy of the REAL kind - for People to determine the conditions of their own life. I'll be reporting on Egypt, and Tunisia and all the other places people are refusing to take the uneven hand they are dealt by the Ruling Elite Class. When will WE quit whispering and ROAR? We witnessed first hand as our Earth was torn asunder and bled oil, which we treated with poison. The Gulf Crisis is far from over. We need to keep looking critically at what has been done, and what is still occurring. No guesty goodness tonight, so I will be welcoming YOUR calls!
