STEVE SIPPLE worked at the Lincoln Journal Star for about 30 years, the last 15 as a columnist. His primary beat for much of that time is Huskers football. In June 2022 he left the Journal Star to work for On3, the newest of the sports sites dedicated to college athletics, mostly recruiting but not exclusively; the others are 247 Sports and Rivals. He has a long-term contract to do what he'd been doing in the newspaper business. He says he doesn't think the local journalists have been too easy on Scott Frost, that the Nebraska football brand could turn around quickly but he's not sure yet if Frost is the guy to do it. A candid interview with one of most senior Nebraska sports journalists.
Redlining is the discriminatory practice of banks and other institutions “lining off” parts of a community where investments and loans are not approved due to the demographics of the area. And by demographics, of course, we're talking about gatekeeping, class and race. Redlining as a specific term and policy has been around since 1920 and was the focus of a 1988 Pulitzer Prize-winning series The Color of Money by Bill Dedman for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and the 2014 essay The Case for Reparations by Ta-Nehisi Coates for The Atlantic magazine. In this episode, host Teri Barr is talking with Margaret Reist, city government reporter with the Journal-Star in Lincoln, Nebraska, about her coverage that revealed redlining's local history, issues and results, as well as highlighted ways that leaders in Lincoln are attempting to create a better future. You can read Margaret Reist's articles here: Lincoln uses redlining history to help guide its growth plans (Oct 17, 2021)Understanding Lincoln's history of housing segregation will help city planners plan for the future, which is why the update to the city-county comprehensive plan includes a section on equity. This year, you’re the boss at the ballot box. We’re listening as you share what issues are important to you and what you want candidates to know about your community. As the Illinois primary election draws closer, college students are preparing to cast their votes. Some for the first time. As part of our series, we asked several Northern Illinois University voters at campus voter registration events about their most important issues in the election, and what questions they would ask candidates and current officeholders directly if they had the chance. WNIJ reporter Chase Cavanaugh found out what they had to say. You’ll hear these voices of students at Northern Illinois University talking about issues important to them during the 2020 election year: Salvador Meza of Chicago, an electrical and computer engineering major; Alexandra Shuman of Lake Zurich, a psychology major; Daliha Oroczo of Elgin, a history major; Jeremy Jordan of Waukegan, a law major; Aquina Estes of Chicago Heights, an undecided major; Luke Carlson of Rockford, a law major. “You’re the Boss: A Citizens’ Agenda for Campaign 2020” is an occasional series of stories about what issues are important to you and what you want candidates to know about your community. The project is a collaboration of the newspapers of the USA Today Network, including the Register Star, and the radio stations of Illinois Public Media. In the Rockford region, that means WNIJ-89.5 FM. The Solutions Journalism Network is providing financial support for the project. The episode’s theme music is called “Funk Game Loop” by Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com and filmmusic.io. And is used under a Creative Commons BY 4.0 licence. A decade ago, the Journal Star produced "Presumed Guilty," an eight-day series telling the story of a 1985 murder in Beatrice and the troubled investigation that led to the wrongful conviction of six men and women. The group known as the Beatrice 6 collectively spent more than 70 years in prison before new DNA testing exonerated them in 2008. The botched investigation and wrongful convictions resulted in a judgment of more than $28 million that still looms over the heads of Gage County taxpayers and continues to make headlines to this day. For the next five days, the Journal Star revisits this important story in a new way. Come back each day through Thursday for the next episode. Ten years after the publication of "Presumed Guilty" — and almost 35 years after Helen Wilson's death — the story of the Beatrice 6 remains a riveting tale of crime, justice and injustice. Follow the podcast today through Thursday and read the original series to understand a story that resonates today.
