Ed and Rob took some time from Friday's BBMS to share their reactions to the Orioles' focus on coach John Mabry for a staff position. Are they doing their due diligence to fill a position on Mansolino's staff? Or could this be some insight on what they could do at the managerial position?
In this episode, Rachael Clinton Chen is joined by Vanessa Sadler, a trauma-informed spiritual director and contemplative creative, who brings heartfelt wisdom to the conversation about healing from personal and collective trauma and abuse. Vanessa draws on her unique training in the Enneagram, spiritual direction, and Narrative Focused Trauma Care to explore what spiritual direction truly is (and what it is not). Vanessa highlights the transformative power of spiritual direction as a vital part of the healing journey, helping to renew our spiritual imagination and attachment to God, ourselves, and others. She also shares some contemplative practices and resources that can support this process, which are linked in the show notes below. This episode is my second interview with John Mabry. In this episode we focus specifically on his music and his newest album, No Stranger. As you will hear in the episode, John has a brain tumor that can be removed, but the result will be that it will make him deaf. So, the airing of this episode of John's music is especially pertinent and poignant. I am deeply honored and blessed that John reached out to me as one of his last interviews before his surgery. This new album is powerful and has much to teach us about God and our faith in Jesus Christ. The Reverend Dr. John R. Mabry is a United Church of Christ pastor specializing in interim ministry. But he is also an author, songwriter, spiritual director, and seminary professor. He is the author of more than 40 books, writing on spirituality, spiritual direction, and theology, but he also writes science fiction and fantasy. John is a veteran of two progressive rock bands—Mind Future and Metaphor—but in the last few years has released a string of solo albums. His latest is called “No Stranger,” and it is available on BandCamp and all major streaming services. He lives with his wife and three Boxers in the foothills of the Catskill mountains in New York. You can learn more about John and his recent creative activities from his website, johnrmabry.com The intro and outro music for this episode is from a clip of a song called 'Father Let Your Kingdom Come' which is found on The Porter's Gate Worship Project Work Songs album and is used by permission by The Porter's Gate Worship Project.

The beginning was bleak. There was no dedicated practice space and they had to raise money themselves for uniforms. Nebraska Women's Volleyball has come a very long way. Hear an interview with journalist and author John Mabry about what happened behind the scenes in this rags to riches sports story. His new book is, “Nebraska Volleyball: The Origin Story”
John Mabry called the Heaping Spoonful hotline to tell listeners how his path from college to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York to culinary school in Avignon, France, to his next job in the kitchen at a five-star hotel in Miami eventually led him to the small city of Corinth, Mississippi, where his three establishments are all stars on the local dining scene.
John Mabry's charmed life took him from a private Christian collegiate education in Texas, to acting on major productions including “NCIS”, “ER”, and “Superbad” – landing national media attention from People Magazine, USA Today and Access Hollywood while living the Hollywood lifestyle with people like Adam Sandler, Emma Stone, Kaley Cuoco and many others. Despite a master's degree in counseling, an invention to his name and multiple public-speaking awards, John experienced more loss than most. He lost a friend and had a leg painfully amputated in a horrific car wreck – which led to a decade-long battle with PTSD, depression, anxiety and substance use disorder. Things worsened after he found his brother dead from a drug overdose in his Beverly Hills home. Following five rehab center visits in seven years, John worked in the treatment industry, hosted a podcast on addiction and shared his story on stages around the country. His rock bottom came after another relapse where he lost his wife, kids, home and job where he reached the deepest depression he'd ever been through. After a few years of intense work on his sobriety and mental health, John is back working as a Public Speaker and Life Coach. He helps people understand the root causes of mental health and addiction, which is not what you think. He offers simple, practical advice anyone can start immediately to overcome adversity and improve their lives. Rob and Luke are joined by two Independent Catholic priests, Siobhan Houston and John Mabry. They discuss what it means to be a Catholic outside the Roman Catholic hierarchy, and how independent Catholicism has incorporated Gnosticism, Theosophy, and Eastern traditions into its rituals and practices.
He used to have it all as an actor, spending years rubbing elbows with the rich and famous. "I worked on the movie Superbad, and big projects like NCIS, ER, JAG and Cold Case," John Mabry was at the top of the world. He had made it. He had arrived! Until his life went into a tailspin right after high school. John was in a major car accident that cost him much more than his acting status. The car accident was a whirlwind. It literally flipped his world upside down. "We rolled 10 times, tire blew out in the friend's car, the driver died." When he woke up in the hospital, he realized that the accident was not a dream. The Life Flight helicopter was real, the accident was real, and the fact that he lost his leg to amputation was real. As a result of the accident, John began to struggle with depression began self medicating by "popping Adderall along with painkillers and washing them down with alcohol." Then, more bad news arrived. "I got a call that my brother didn't show up for work, so I went to his house in Beverly Hills, kicked in his locked bedroom door," Mabry said. "He had been dead for three days from an overdose." That's when Mabry hit rock bottom. Tune into here to learn how John has taken his mess and turned it into a message! John is working on breaking the stigma and the face of addiction. John Mabry's story of addiction begins where most people's end. At 22, he was involved in a horrific SUV accident that claimed his right leg as well as the life of his friend. (The vehicle flipped 10 times in less than 10 seconds.) It's the sort of shocking, violent twist that takes place in Act 2 in most screenplays about substance abuse. Not for Mabry. This happened during the opening credits of his life story. It wasn't until after John survived the accident that he found himself in a private hell of painkillers and alcohol that very nearly took everything he held dear. Years later, his bout with addiction has become the backbone of a remarkable recovery, which now sees him as a counselor, motivational speaker, triathlete (yes, you read that right), and a proud, married father of three who uses his past weaknesses as present strengths. It's clear that John Mabry hasn't simply learned to use a prosthetic leg so much as learn how to walk, fearlessly and courageously, through life. I also started working for a non-profit called the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which I still do some work with. They're in San Diego. We raise money for people with physical disabilities access to sports. They've funded tens of thousands of dollars to me over the years for sports equipment and a running leg. In turn, I've been able to help raise money for things like wheelchairs for kids' wheelchair basketball teams. It's great to work alongside a charity with a meaningful purpose. I even got a master's in counseling to get myself in a position to help other people. Skydiving, triathlons, snow skiing. I continue to push myself physically. Crossfit took a toll on my good leg, which I have arthritis in. Now it's boxing at Title Boxing, which has been challenging. Really good therapeutic outlet to let go of steam. I frequently quote Scent of a Woman, when Al Pacino's Lt. Col. Frank Slade says, “There is nothing like the sight of an amputated spirit. There is no prosthetic for that.” I think so many people today struggle with disabling events in their lives that they don't feel they can share with others or find the strength to face them. Maybe something in their past has caused shame, disappointment, or unmet expectations. Loneliness is a big one. Especially with millennials. Everything's gotta look good on social media. All the filters. Or, “Oh, that angle didn't work. Let's try it again so I look thinner.” It's really just about “If you're struggling—it's okay. It's not ok to cover up your struggles by endlessly checking your phone, turning to food, toxic relationships, or any other addictive behavior. If you need help, ask for it.” You don't have to work through your struggles alone.

In this episode, I continue my conversation with John Mabry, longtime friend of SDI and former Presence editor. This week we get into the modality of spiritual companionship at its essence, which is helping people to grow spiritually. For John, who wrote a very practical book about this called Starting Spiritual Direction, its about creating safe space for others to explore mystical experience (which is more common than we realize), and awaken to the Love Story that is their spiritual life. John is graciously making this e-book available as a download to all spiritual companions in our community. He asks that you please do not share this widely, but if you are a part of the SDI community and have an e-reader, please free download of STARTING SPIRITUAL DIRECTION: https://BookHip.com/XFRMWF John Mabry is a United Church of Christ pastor, currently serving Grace North Church in Berkeley and Our Redeemer Lutheran in Oakland. John Mabry is beloved in the SDI Community. He’s been with SDI for over 20 years in a number of ways. He is the former editor and a longtime contributor to Presence Journal – our quarterly magazine on spiritual direction and companionship. He does…so many things. He’s a spiritual director, he’s a prolific author, having written dozens of books on spirituality and mysticism, (I counted 23 books just on spirituality on his website!), but he also writes fantasy and science fiction novels. He is a UCC pastor – at two different churches, AND he makes music with two bands, and is working on a solo album. How in the world does he find time for all of this? In this podcast episode, Part 1 of our conversation, we catch up on all the things John is up to, his teaching practice at the Chaplaincy Institute, why Interfaith exploration and openness is an important part of the spiritual journey, and how the heck he finds time for all his creative endeavors. In this episode, I had the honor of interviewing: The Reverend Doctor John Mabry. John was ordained to the Old Catholic ministry in 1991. He has served as an associate pastor — and later the solo pastor — of Grace North Church in Berkeley, California since 1993. Grace North Church is a Congregational church that worships in a more-or-less Anglican fashion. John was consecrated a bishop in 2007 for the Old Catholic Order of Holy Wisdom, he served that community until he retired from the episcopacy in 2012, when he was received into the United Church of Christ as a pastor. He continues to serve Grace North Church, now also received into the UCC, and also serves at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Oakland. He holds a master’s degree in Culture and Creation Spirituality from Holy Names College and a doctorate in Philosophy and Religion from the California Institute of Integral Studies, where he majored in Hinduism and minored in Taoism. John holds certificates in Anglican Studies, Spiritual Direction, and Spiritual Direction Supervision, and for the past sixteen years has directed the Interfaith Spiritual Direction Certificate Program at the Chaplaincy Institute — an interfaith seminary in Berkeley, CA — where he also teaches comparative theology. He has taught spirituality, Christian mysticism, world religions, and pastoral ministry at various graduate schools in the Bay Area. John is the author of over thirty books. He also owns and operates The Apocryphile Press, a small publishing house with more than 200 titles by 50 authors around the world. Among many other things, Apocryphile publishes many important books on Old Catholic history, theology, and practice. Check out my interview with John Mabry today, Director of Public Outreach for Addiction Campuses in Nashville, and also speaker for Greek University. John talks about the real cause of addictions, places for today's college students to get help for those addictions, and some fascinating stories about his life and career.
In this episode, Lauren and Jessica talk with John Mabry about the important topic of addiction. John Mabry serves as Director of Public Outreach and the host of ‘High Sobriety’ podcast for Addiction Campuses. Mabry spends much of his time speaking out on the stigma of addiction and mental health. He also has a passion for talking with audiences about the importance of processing early childhood trauma or adverse childhood experiences. Research confirms that not acknowledging early negative experiences, like abuse, neglect, parental separation, bullying, etc. leads to significantly higher chances of being addicted later in life. Letting people know there is hope out of these negative experiences is key to curbing the addiction and opioid epidemic our country is in right now. Have to ask a question this week that has bugged me all winter so far. “If” Mike Matheny and John Mabry were the problem and truly cost the Cards tons of game how can changing the manager and hitting coach along with adding Goldy not be enough to get to 95 wins? Food for... The post “Why is Goldy not enough?” appeared first on Two Birds on a Bat.

Can Adverse Childhood Experiences Cause Addiction? SHOW GUEST: John Mabry Whether it’s a broken bone, perpetually scraped knees or a healthy fear of the dark, no one leaves childhood unscathed. At some point, we were all faced with events in our past that left us scarred, scared or both. These events, though frightening at the time, help the body and brain development and mature. Unfortunately, some children suffer from far more traumatic experiences than others. As children are exposed to things like neglect, abuse or addiction in the home, these adverse childhood experiences can cause lifelong stress, pain and suffering. Children struggling to cope with ACEs often grow into adults who abuse substances to numb the pain of their past. According to our guest John Mabry, host of Addiction Campuses’ ‘High Sobriety’ podcast, trauma many times plays an unrecognized part in addiction and we are coming to understand that for many, it many be the root of their addiction.” With approximately 35 million children in the United States suffering from at least one traumatic childhood event, it’s more important than ever to understand how easily childhood trauma can turn into an addiction
Ron, Pete, and Elliott were joined by Chris Lollis of Cardinals Nation 24/7 and Josh Potter of Two Birds on a Bat and Arch City to discuss the dismissal of Mike Matheny, John Mabry, and Bill Mueller. What is the plan going forward for the Cardinals? It starts with their new voice, but who will that be? And how much blame should be laid on Mo’s roster construction. Is he next? Let's talk.

Casey Stengel once said, "Can't anyone here play this game?" Casey was questioning talent, but the question could be used to query the current health of the Cardinals. A lot of disabled list moves this week and that gives Daniel (C70 At The Bat, @C70) and Allen (The Redbird Daily, @amedlock1) plenty to discuss. From the loss of Paul DeJong to the future of Adam Wainwright, this week has brought a lot of shifts and questions about the future in St. Louis. Then there are those that are currently hurt, like Dominic Leone on the downside and Alex Reyes on the up. After the extensive medical update, Daniel and Allen get into the offense and whether or not John Mabry deserves to stick around as hitting coach. All this while the Cardinals are beating up on the Phillies, so plenty of reaction to the game as well. Tune in then give us a review!

I'm Charlie and I'll be your host this week as we bring you part 2 of my discussion with John C Mabry. We pick up right where we left off last week as John describes how he rose to success in film and TV as his disease was taking him to unimaginable lows. John suffers another unimaginable and traumatic tragedy which takes him from the fame of Hollywood to near penniless living in a trailer before finding meaningful and lasting Recovery. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-way-out-podcast/message
I'm Charlie and I'll be your host for this week's episode, which is packed with spiritual truth from beginning to end. John Mabry's journey to living in recovery and living in his self-described “truth” is a powerful lesson on the toll addiction and alcoholism takes on us; especially when denial and lack of acceptance of the true nature of our condition reign supreme. His insight on early childhood trauma is a welcome addition to those of us who have suffered similarly. Listen Up. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-way-out-podcast/message
“On this episode of Prospects after Dark, Kyle talks about his excitement to see Jack Flaherty in the Cardinals rotation, gives you a vague profile of Ramon Urias and Darren Seferina, goes deeper into the Knizner/Kelly talk, and discusses if there’s merit to the criticism of John Mabry. Also, Kyle fulfills the promise he made during the last episode and drinks a Four Loco with his Bourbon. It does not go well.” * Cake from "Friend is a Four Letter Word"

John Mabry is an actor, speaker, and serves as Director of Public Outreach at Addiction Campuses. He also hosts the “High Sobriety” Podcast. John has worked on NCIS, ER, the movie Superbad and many others. John had the all American life before a horrific car accident killed his friend and left him with his leg being amputated while attending college in Texas. John struggled with addiction, depression and PTSD for over a decade following his leg amputation. Things got significantly worse, however, after he found his brother dead from a drug overdose in his Beverly Hills home. John went from parties at the Playboy mansion to living in a trailer on the banks of the Cumberland River in Tennessee. His downward spiral reached an all-time high after he was fired by radio/TV personal finance guru Dave Ramsey as a result of his addictions. This led him to finally asking for help. John spent the next several years in multiple rehabs. The last one he went to was an Addiction Campuses facility, where things finally clicked.
