Ali was one of NZ's most high profile broadcasters and journalists for more than two decades and worked for One News, Breakfast, Fair Go, Seven Sharp, Radio Live, Close up and many more.In this episode we talk about her rise to the top of NZ Media and all of the twists and turns along the way, getting made redundant five times and how she kept bouncing back, why her relationships became front page news of every media outlet, working with Paul Holmes, Mike Hosking, Paul Henry and Willie Jackson, leading the charge on NZ's MeToo movement - and what she's doing now.We also talk in detail about her new book No Words for This, where she talks for the first time about the monster that haunted her childhood. As young girls, Ali and her sister were sexually abused by their father on multiple occasions, and it's revealed in the book that he also repeatedly raped his grandson. It's a shocking, and confronting story that is told with the hope of helping others.Ali's story is complex and powerful and she does such a great job of articulating it. And she is brilliant company, warm fun and engaging. And a content warning: This episode deals with sexual abuse and may not be suitable for all listeners. Hosted on Acast. A special interview with One News.
https://www.thefp.com/p/christopher-caldwell-dei-trump-executive-order Christopher Caldwell: The Biggest Policy Change of the Century Trump is not simply eliminating the affirmative-action enforcement machinery. He is throwing it into reverse. So tumultuous was the first week of Donald Trump's second term that people have barely noticed, a week on, that last Tuesday he repealed affirmative action by executive order. That is astonishing. For half a century, affirmative action has been the federal government's principal instrument for carrying out desegregation, the longest and costliest moral crusade in American history. After the 1970s it was adapted to liberation movements, from feminism to gay rights. Supreme Court justices anguished over the way its call for special consideration of minorities might clash with the letter of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which barred racial discrimination. Over the past decade affirmative action became the hammer of the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) movement, which grew so unpopular that it has now brought affirmative action (and much else) down with it. Trump's decision to repeal it is the most significant policy change of this century—more significant than the Affordable Care Act of 2010 or anything done about Covid. How can people be talking about anything else? Yet major news outlets treat Trump's bold move as a detail of personnel management: “Distress and Fury as Trump Upends Federal Jobs,” headlined The New York Times. James and Dwayne (Glenn's at Disney with his wife) talk about Argentina has the potential to become a global superpower due to its large population, rich natural resources, and strategic geographic location. However, high altitude potato production and communist forces pose challenges to the country's economic growth and political system. In another part of the conversation, attorney-client privilege and confidentiality were emphasized, with a discussion of reporters' involvement in hush money cases. Michael Cohen and Donald Trump discussed legalities of extortion and campaign expenses, with Cohen raising questions about the legality of using personal funds for campaign expenses. The conversation later turned to ethical obligations of lawyers in the trial, and legal strategies in Trump's criminal trial, including the need for the prosecution to prove the underlying crime and the potential for Trump's attorneys to make a motion for a directed verdict. Finally, the speakers discussed political strategy, the Left's agenda, and global problems such as political corruption, economic inequality, and social unrest, with a focus on comprehensive reforms to address these issues.
Surprised but not surprised. That's what I've been saying to people who have asked me how I feel about the closure of Newshub. They announced it yesterday and they're doing the two-week consultation thing. But we all know that's not going to change anything. I see even the New Zealand boss of Warner Brothers Discovery —which owns Newshub— is saying people shouldn't get their hopes up that anything other than a complete shutdown by the middle of the year is likely. So, it's an HR box-ticking exercise for the company and, possibly, something not that many of the staff at Newshub will bother about because finding another job will be their main priority now, won't it? Because apparently up to 350 jobs will go, about 200 of them from the news operation. And while I have a huge amount of compassion for the people at Newshub. And, while I know that what was announced yesterday could happen to any of us. Not just in media, either. And while I'm not in any way being dismissive of what's happening and what our Newshub colleagues are going through, we need to remember that this has been a long time coming. Almost right from the start. Because, it seemed to me, that the objective behind TV3 in the first place was to just stick it up the state-run broadcaster. The idea behind TV3 was to break the reliance we had on state-run television. But that lofty goal wasn't enough on its own and TV3 struggled from the start to make significant headway against TVNZ. And, wouldn't you know it, come the middle of this year, we'll be back where we were before November 1989 here in New Zealand: pretty much reliant on the state-owned broadcaster for our TV news. But, despite what everyone else seems to be saying, I don't think it's the disaster they're making it out to be. Yes, it's a personal disaster for our Newshub colleagues, don't get me wrong. But, in the nearly 35 years since TV3 began, we have become much more discerning in how we digest our news. What I'm getting at there, is that pretty much all of us are Doubting Thomas's these days, aren't we? And we don't just swallow or believe everything we see on the six o'clock news anymore. Which is why I think that what's happening with Newshub isn't going to mean boom times for TVNZ. Because, chances are, if you watch Newshub, you do it because you think it's better than One News. And, chances are, if you prefer Newshub it's because —rightly or wrongly— you think that TVNZ is just a government propaganda machine. Which is why some people are saying that losing Newshub and leaving it to TVNZ is going to be a huge step backwards in terms of media scrutiny and democracy. That, if the only TV news service in the country is state-owned, then all we're going to get is government propaganda and less scrutiny than we have now. But I don't agree with that. Because A. we don't just believe everything we're told anymore. And B. we get our news in all sorts of different ways these days. Back in 1989, when TV3 started, online news wasn't a thing. Social media wasn't a thing. We didn't have 24-hour news and talk radio everywhere in the country, to the extent we do now. So, because of all those things, I'm not concerned about One News being the only TV news service left standing. Funnily enough, and maybe it's just out of habit, that's the one I watch regularly most nights. But, when it comes to political scrutiny and analysis, Newshub beats One News hands-down and TVNZ is going to have to up its game big time on that front. And it is dreaming if it thinks a truckload of people are going to start watching its news bulletins just because there's nothing else on at six o'clock. If TVNZ doesn't up its game, people will go elsewhere. Because they can. They couldn't back in 1989. But they can in 2024. And that's why I'm not going to be joining the chorus predicting doomsday for democracy. If I want to watch the state-run news service, I will. If I don't, I won't. The latest One News/ Verian poll shows NZ First still holds the balance of power. Labour is stagnant at 26 percent, National's leading with 36 percent- but ACT has dropped two points to 10 percent, meaning they'll need NZ First to reach the threshold. National finance spokesperson Nicola Willis isn't confident Winston Peters will stand by a possible National/ACT coalition. "It's been 27 years since he's gone with us, so we've said- look, that's a last resort phone call we're prepared to make, but our message is really clear. If you want a change in Government, cast your vote for National." LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It's looking increasingly likely Chris Luxon will have to pick up the phone to Winston Peters next month. Tonight's One News/ Verian Poll shows New Zealand First is on 6 percent - up a point - and remaining in a kingmaker position. Labour and National have both dropped 1 point - to 26 and and 36 percent- and Act's steady on 12. The Greens are on 13, and Te Pati Maori is at 2 percent. National Deputy Leader Nicola Willis says it shows the election will come down to the wire. "People listening need to know- if you want a change of Government, you are going to have to vote for it, and that's a party vote for National. Because any other vote could put a change of Government at risk." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
National's support has slipped, but a poll shows it's still miles ahead of the competition. The latest One News-Verian poll puts the National Party on 37 percent - down 2 points - and Labour on 27, down one. The Greens and ACT are both up two points - neck-in-neck on 12 percent - and NZ First is steady on 5. Only the centre-right bloc could form a Government- but Hipkins and Luxon are tied as preferred Prime Minister with 23 percent. ZB senior political correspondent Barry Soper says this is proof NZ First will have to be part of a National/ACT coalition, because 61 seats is a very narrow majority. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Another snapshot of how political parties are faring in the polls is out at 6pm - in another One News -Verian poll. Its figures last week had National leaps and bounds ahead of Labour, which have been on stubbornly low 20s for weeks. Newstalk ZB chief political reporter Aaron Dahmen says even a one percent bump would help Labour. National has been criticised for not releasing costings for its multi-billion-dollar tax cut package- and Dahmen says that could play into today's rankings. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
National's Nicola Willis is satisfied with her party pulling ahead of the competition in another poll. The latest One News-Verian poll puts the National Party on 37 percent - down 2 points - and Labour on 27, down one. NZ First has crossed the 5 percent threshold again- meaning the party could join National and ACT in Parliament. Nicola Willis says this poll shows voters are in the mood for change, which she believes a vote for National could fix. "A vote for any other party risks 3 more years of Labour, beholden to Te Pāti Māori and the Greens. That would be a coalition of chaos." The National and Labour party leaders each rated their performance in the first leaders debate an 8/10. The two faced off in the One News debate Tuesday night, with the tightest exchanges over co-governance and housing. Labour leader Chris Hipkins told reporters afterwards he enjoyed the debate and says it's up to viewers to decide who won. National leader Christopher Luxon felt the exchange was respectful and says he was not surprised by how much he and Mr Hipkins agreed on. Political editor Jane Patterson spoke to Corin Dann.

Flamsiga sketcher avlöser varandra och studiopubliken skrattar på precis rätt ställen. När den livesända showen närmar sig sitt slut är det dags för kvällens gästartist att inta scenen. 26-åriga Sinead O'Connor tittar rakt in i kameran och stämningen i studion förändras helt.

The Government is facing the fight of its life, with the latest One News poll showing National and Act could form the next government by a comfortable margin. National is polling at 37-percent, while ACT is on 13-percent - which would give them 65 seats, an easy majority. Labour is languishing at 29-percent, with the Greens on 13-percent, and Te Pati Maori steady on three percent. Chris Hipkins remains the country's most popular choice for Prime Minister, but by the slimmest of margins - 21-percent, compared with National leader, Christopher Luxon on 20-percent. Hipkins spoke to Corin Dann.

A new poll shows although support is down for National, the right-wing bloc could form a Government. Tonight's One News-Verian poll shows National have dropped two points to 35 percent and Labour is down two points to 33. Act is up one to 12, the Greens are up three point to 10 percent and Te Pati Maori is up one to 3 percent. On those numbers, ACT and National would win 61 seats and the Labour/Greens/Te Pati Maori alliance would get 59. ZB political editor Jason Walls says voters aren't responding well to the internal issues the Labour Party's had over the last few months. Turkey has made a u-turn and agreed to support Sweden's bid to join NATO. The region had previously spent months blocking Sweden's attempt to gain a membership, accusing it of hosting Kurdish militants. One News Europe correspondent Mei Heron says there must be something that got Turkey over the line that hasn't been disclosed. "There must be something more to it. Only two days ago, the Turkish President told the US president that he didn't think that Sweden was ready for NATO." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

There's an old political wisdom that if you've got bad news to tell, drop the news last thing on Friday so it gets buried by the weekend. So I was a bit confused to be watching One News on Friday with John Campbell oozing and gesticulating all over the screen, telling a story that on the surface seemed to be good news. 1News exclusively revealed that nearly 40,000 charges have been laid with over 8,300 people arrested to date as part of Operation Cobalt, their operation against gang activities. The operation was originally set up after an intensive spate of Killer Beez and Tribesmen-linked shootings in Auckland last year. Police said the arrests include patched gang members, gang prospects, and gang associates. Over 400 firearms have been seized and more than 1,100 search warrants executed. By any metric this is a significant blow against organised crime. Now the cynic in me immediately thought the Labour Party has leaked this before the National Party conference, which we could all tell was going to be hard on crime and law and order. But closer inspection saw the release came from the Police and the tone was defiant. Detective Superintendent Uraia Vakaruru, the officer in charge of the operation, told 1News that seizing prized possessions —for example, a gang member's motorbike— tends to really send a strong message. He said police are just focusing on the business at hand. I get their pride in their work and I've been worried about police morale for a while. With opposition parties and editorial writers bellowing away that the government is soft on crime, day in and day out for weeks, every sector of our justice system gets tarred with the brush. After the gang funeral a week ago the police were also criticised for their inaction by people with no operational experience at all. But these figures and the nine arrests made in the week after the tangi says to me that the police are fighting crime smart rather than stupid. The police have to play by the rules and they have to make arrests stick into corrections. Letting the perception that the police are soft on crime run rampant in the media sends a bigger signal to criminals than anything else. The fact that National and ACT beat this drum to beat Labour in an electoral contest is regrettable. I'd like to take this opportunity to praise the police and thank them for their work.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

So why are so many mainstream media outlets so poor at telling the news? I say this after tuning into One News coverage of the coronation only to blunder into a 5 minute piece about Harry, followed by how to cook coronation quiche. Maybe they thought they were being entertaining, but instead they came off as infantile. So I tuned over to BBC World. There, they were talking about the King's involvement in the arts and they followed it with more details about the ceremony. The story was about the King and his country, not his errant son. In fact, Harry arrived on a commercial flight, gave no interviews, joined the rest of the family, sat with other retired or non working royals (which is what he is), and afterwards he went to the airport to go home to see his own family. No fights, no showdowns, no dramas. Yet the Mirror alone, over the week ran 100 articles about Harry, mostly derogatory. People have described the onslaught as 'hate for hire'. Even when Mike Hosking wrote 1000 words about the Coronation for the Herald the paper chose to highlight one sentence in which he said Harry looked alone and a little lost as the headline. I actually thought Harry seemed relaxed and chatty, but who cares. It's only the media that was so obsessed with Harry. Today they've moved on to another royal cliché. The breakfast show on TV1 was covering whether it was time for New Zealand to become a republic. Too soon and too stupid in my book. I don't believe it will happen in my lifetime. Particularly after the success of this weekend. The reason the British monarchy the most successful monarchy on Earth is that they have spent hundreds of years slowly backing out of the day-to-day affairs of state so that today they are purely performative and symbolic. No one is feeling oppressed or ruled by this family. This story was not about the King, or his son, or the institution of the constitutional monarchy. It was about the British nation. It's about their capability and their spirit. In the past year the Brits have seen three historic royal events - the Diamond Jubilee, the Queen's funeral, and now the King's coronation. And they've all been faultless triumphs of organisation, story telling and co-ordination involving thousands. This was not live coverage of an old toff sitting in a chair in a church and having someone put a fancy hat on his head, as some critics portrayed it. This was a nation showing the world what it can do and that it's the best in the world in doing it. It was a show of strength and order and no-one is cancelling that any time soon. By quashing the Information & Broadcasting Ministry's order ceasing operations of the Malayalam news channel, Media One, the Supreme Court appears to have sent a clear message to the government of the day – that the freedom of the press is a key pillar of Indian democracy. At a time when the press is under pressure to toe the Government's line, the judgment is also a signal to members of the media – that they should do their job without fear or favour. The press, the Supreme Court held, had a duty to speak truth to power. Is the press performing this duty today? What are the larger implications of this April 6 verdict?

I was very moved by the piece on One News last night featuring the teenager who got a terrible beating at school. This is Eva Vitali, she's 13, and it happened at Orewa College back in May. We're all too familiar with this kind of brutal playground nastiness. Three or four against one, that's brave eh? Eva's shoved to the ground, they're pulling on her hair and then it's punching and kicking her when she's down. As anyone who's experienced this kind of thing at school knows, it starts off maybe with a bit of shoving and eventually escalates. In Eva's case she'd previously been shoved down the stairs by someone she didn't know and put it down to an accident. On the day of the attack itself, out in the open on school grounds, some little ratbag is filming it, and posts it to social media. Back in the day, the worst of it was the violence itself and the fear of when and where the next assault might come from. Now, the propagation of that violence and humiliation is perhaps even worse than being hit. The perpetrators seek notoriety, fame and even some kind of perverse acknowledgement that they can't find elsewhere in their lives. And they have the perfect platform for it in the sewer of social media. In Eva's case, not only did she have to endure the physical stuff, bad enough on its own, but the messages from students at other schools telling her they wanted a go as well. I'm not going to rant on about that aspect of it this morning. I'd rather just say something about the positive I drew from that report last night. From Eva's attitude and what you saw about the family she's got around her. She talked about the emotional impact being on the receiving end has, and how difficult it was to open up about what was going on at school. And this quote "People can be really mean sometimes, but it's not your problem, it's theirs" she said. Eva says she's moving on, and get this, she's forgiven them. Wow. What a great kid.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
