No pizza jokes, no I'm-walkin'-heres, no big piles of trash on the sidewalks in this episode because Alex and Stephen are avoiding Manhattan and heading straight upstate for this episode's Power Rankings. Beers from Wayward Lane Brewing, Deep Fried Beers, Frequentem Brewing Co., and Fallside Brewing break out the chains, baseball bats, and broken bottles as they fight to the death in this Upstate New York Showdown. In the Beer News, Schlitz is closing but not before throwing one last party and Coors Light collabs with Cheez-It for a cheesy corporate money grab. Send us Fan MailAn introduction to the Alpine Lakes SWIMBATICALWhat is it? , where is it? And why now? I've always been someone who follows my curiosity — sometimes on impulse, sometimes with a spreadsheet, and occasionally with a level of planning that makes my family nervous. That mix has taken me to some odd places over the years: running across deserts, cycling across countries, and swimming through channels, lakes, and straits that most people sensibly admire from dry land.I never set out to “collect” challenges. They just kept appearing — the English Channel, Lake Zurich, the Strait of Gibraltar, Catalina, Manhattan Island, Lake Constance, the Sea of Galilee, Bonifacio, Windermere, and a long list of swims that started with “it might be fun if…” and ended with “well, that was bigger than expected.”But lately, I've felt a different pull. Not towards something harder — just something… deeper. Slower. More creative. More curious. So I'm taking a break from the desk and heading off on a SWIMBATICAL — a season of lakes, travel, sketching, filming, swimming, and seeing what happens when I stop rushing from one big thing to the next. It's not a race. It's not a record attempt. It's just me, wandering around Europe with goggles, a notebook, and a slightly over‑packed vW camper for a season of lakes, creativity, and intentional adventure.Travel, swim, sketch, film, write. If you enjoy quiet adventure, open water, creative projects, or simply watching someone enjoying life one lake at a time, you're very welcome to follow along. This is MYSWIM.And This is the My SWIMBATICAL.Let's see where it goes.

(Available to subscribers only from 14th Feb. Episode free to play 21st Feb). This episode is sort of the second part to episode 6, the chat with Andy Cornish, as on the same day and exactly the same time, Dani Wallwork set off to also complete the 70km of Lake Geneva. Both swimmers went through some of the most apocryphal conditions I have ever seen at night, and, like Andy, Dani called time on her swim at approximately 17 hours and roughly 55km in. Dani is no stranger to lake swimming, holding the world record for the fastest one way, two way and three way Windermere swim in a wetsuit. She has also completed Lake Zurich, and is fair to say is a rapid swimmer… I loved this episode as although I wasn't on her boat for her Lake Geneva attempt, I was of course on the water at the same time, so I saw first hand the conditions she had to battle through. I hope you enjoy listening to Dani Wallwork!
Available to subscribers only until end of Season 5 (March 2026).This guest came on the podcast originally way back in 2023… he has swam the English Channel three times and has now taken to completing many more lake swims to add to his enormous swimming CV. Notably he was the first British person to swim the 70km of Lake Geneva and has since gone on to complete Lake Taupo, Lake Zurich and many more with his sights on further lakes soon… He also arranges the international Steve Wand memorial swims every year where around 100 swimmers congregate over a weekend for two days of 100x100 in memory of Steve who lost his life in 2016. It is Mark Sheridan….
Episode 21 of Matt Likes Beer centers on one of Matt's most personal beer styles: the Vienna Lager. The featured beer comes from Phase Three Brewing in Lake Zurich, Illinois, a brewery Matt knows well through Tavour, though he has yet to visit in person. As the fifth episode of 2026, this installment marks a return to a classic, clearly defined BJCP style after several episodes focused on mixed or emerging categories. Matt opens by explaining why Vienna Lager holds such a special place in his beer journey, tracing it back to his early craft beer days and the role Sam Adams Boston Lager played as his gateway into better beer. That personal connection sets the tone for a thoughtful, technically rigorous review grounded in both experience and nostalgia. Using BJCP Category 7A guidelines, Matt evaluates the beer's copper color, clarity, persistent head, malt-forward aroma, and balanced bitterness. While the beer excels in appearance and overall balance, the judging reveals a few technical shortcomings, including a slightly acrid finish, excess sweetness for the style, and a slick mouthfeel that detracts from elegance. These factors lead to a final score of 35 out of 50, placing the beer firmly in the “Very Good” range. Despite the score, Matt is clear: this is a beer he would happily drink again. The episode reinforces a recurring theme of the podcast—the difference between judging to style and drinking for enjoyment—and why a technically imperfect beer can still be highly satisfying in real-world settings.
Learn about taps and tools that make beer taste different than it tastes at home, from cask conditioning to Czech side-pour faucets.Roaring Table Brewing Co-Owner and Head Brewer Lane Fearing discusses why Roaring Table is known for “doing things the hard way,” from building a brewery on a shoestring budget to the reality of hand-cleaning an electric kettle. He breaks down why cask beer tastes different, including the impact of cellar temperature (~50°F) and lower carbonation on aroma and drinkability, and goes full beer-nerd on service tools that change mouthfeel and foam: first, the Czech LUKR faucet (wet foam + “milk pour”), and second, a two-spout Japanese sharp-pour faucet designed to trap CO₂ under a tight cap of foam. After the beer break, Lane discusses the German Stichfass (the celebratory gravity keg you hammer-tap), why Roaring Table's new kitchen “pie” program is such a big deal, and the surprisingly sessionable side of “dark beer.” He shares his Munich Dunkel with Brian and Cody before moving on to a New Zealand Pilsner and a discussion of what makes NZ hops taste different than American hops. Plus: Roaring Table's beloved Tuesday Vinyl Night and a nitro pub ale that drinks like creamy, cascading pub perfection.0:00 Roaring Table Brewing in Lake Zurich2:07 Doing things the hard way in brewing3:27 Why brewers respect Roaring Table6:02 Emptying bourbon barrels7:48 Brewing many beer styles10:15 Pitching a brewery to your spouse12:11 Why Roaring Table chose Lake Zurich16:44 Why cask beer tastes different19:55 What a LUKR faucet does to lager20:38 Japanese sharp pour faucet explained21:44 Japanese rice lager vs traditional lager24:15 Munich Dunkel tasting notes27:37 What is a stichfass keg29:10 Why the pizza program matters32:50 New Zealand pilsner tasting34:05 How New Zealand hops taste different36:48 Tuesday vinyl night at the brewery40:38 Nitro pub ale and cascading foam45:38 New brewhouse and cellar plans47:45 Biggest pride after 8 years48:53 Final four brewing questions50:53 What makes their Helles special54:33 Final toastAbout Roaring Table Brewing Co: Located in Lake Zurich, Illinois, Roaring Table Brewing focuses on classic lagers, English cask ales, and beer service that makes each pour taste better than it would at home. He was born in Ireland to wealthy parents, who sent him to be educated at the Monastery of Bangor. There he embraced the ascetical life and became a monk. He was one of the twelve monks who traveled with his spiritual father St Columbanus (November 23) as missionaries to Gaul. In time some of the group traveled into pagan lands, up the Rhine river to Lake Zurich. The monks settled on Lake Constance around a chapel dedicated to St Aurelia, which had been taken by the pagans as a shrine; they cleansed and reconsecrated the chapel, which became the center of their new monastery. Saint Gall lived as a hermit, serving the brethren by making nets and catching fish. In 612 St Columbanus went on to Italy with most of his disciples, leaving St Gall and a few others to continue their life. When St Gall delivered Frideburga, the daughter of a local duke, from a demon, he offered the saint a tract of land on the shores of Lake Constance; here was founded the monastery that in later times bore St Gall's name. At various times, the holy Gall refused calls to become a bishop, or to take over the abbacy of the great monastery at Luxeuil. To all such requests he answered that he would rather serve than command. He continued living in his isolated monastic community until he reposed in peace in 640, at the age of ninety-nine. In later years, and continuing well into the middle ages, the Monastery of St Gall became famed for the holiness of its monks and for its library.

This past Sunday was the 9 month mark since Israel was attacked by Hamas. This is obviously much longer than the 6 day war of 1967 and even more tragic than America's 9-11 attack. Nonetheless, Israel continues in its efforts to defeat Hamas while attempts to establish a cease-fire have failed. --With more on this issue as well as his call to stand with Israel, Crosstalk welcomed Pastor Jim Scudder, Jr. Pastor Scudder is pastor of Quentin Road Baptist Church in Lake Zurich, Illinois. He's an author and is speaker on the program In Grace which airs on WVCY Television, VCY.tv, on the VCY America Radio Network and other facilities across the country. Pastor Scudder has a passion for souls and a desire to teach others about our Savior's love.--Discussion began with Pastor Scudder talking about the length of the battle with Hamas, the 120 individuals who remain as hostages and the world's reaction at this point in time. While it's true that immediately after the Hamas attack there was great sympathy toward Israel, now it's turned in the other direction as antisemitism, both in America and abroad, continues to increase. --While we should fight the evil of antisemitism, is God using it to call Jews back to their homeland for the wrap-up of history-- This program answers that question while pointing out what all of us need to remember- Salvation is available to everyone and the Gospel is the answer. Let's share that Gospel, while standing as individuals and churches, with the people through whom our scriptures were written and our Savior was born.
