We watched South Boy's visionary CONFESSIONS OF A THUG starring South Boy, JT Money, Gucci Mane (?), Lady of Rage. Our first JT Money, our first Lady of Rage, and definitely our first South Boy. Strap in, this is a banger. Also we're banking episodes so Ryan can go on paternity leave, so this has references to the Drake/Kendrick beef that are mildly outdated. On this episode of Roger The Wild Child Show: Hollyweird we are joined my two time Grammy winning music publisher, Tony Mercedes!TONY MERCEDESIt was never a secret that Atlanta-based music mogul Tony Mercedes would be at the forefront of the music industry one day. It may have been a shock to those radio and music executives who turned down Mercedes' first song: “Dazzey Dukes” which became the club dance anthem all across the nation in 1992 and generated sales exceeding five million records sold. He was assured early on that year that his debut single “ Dazzey Dukes” would never even leave the State of Florida where he had previously attended the “Jack the Rapper” convention. Not taking “No” for an answer, Mercedes launched his own independent record label out of his hometown Augusta, Georgia. With $2,300.00 Mercedes embarked on what others thought was insane as an amateur to the music industry. That persistence and determination led Mercedes to the top of the music industry and “Dazzey Dukes” to the top of the Billboard charts- making it one of many of Mercedes longest charting records in Billboard history (56 consecutive weeks). Ever since then Mercedes has made unforgettable footprints in this business we call music. Now as President and CEO of Tony Mercedes Music he has risen to the occasion as a creative genius. His ears have been golden in picking number one hit after hits. With songs like TLC's No Scrubs, and Tag Team's five time platinum release “ Whomp There It Is”, and 12- Gauges one time platinum release “ Donkey Butt”.Tony Mercedes added a new meaning to being a Baby's Daddy when he took B- Rock and the Biz explosively to the top of the Billboard charts with a comedic record titled “My Baby's Daddy.” If that wasn't enough Mercedes changed the course of bass history when he released a bass remake of Shirley Murdock's song “ As We Lay” within three weeks after its release it received almost 2,000 spins a week at radio. When it was time for LaFace Records most selling female group of all time TLC to release their third album after a five year absence – it was Mercedes who came in like a thief in the night finding TLC's first single. “No Scrubs” written by Tiny & Kandi of the recording group Escape. “No Scrubs” rocketed straight to platinum, success. Mercedes A&R skills are responsible for TLC having this song, which is the most BDS detected record in the history of music (how is that for the Mercedes touch).” No Scrubs” was found with a then unknown producer Shekspere. Proving that he was no scrub. Tony Mercedes ended up having the number one pop song in the country. During yet another exciting time in his career, Mercedes also had the number one rap song and the same time with JT Money's catchy “ Who Dat” song released through Priority Records. Lets not forget his success on Pressha's Platinum R&B Record, “Splackavellie” which was featured on Ice Cubes “Player Club” soundtrack. According to the May 8th issue of Billboard Magazine, Mercedes had the number on pop song, “No Scrubs”, the number one rap song “Who Dat” and the number one R&B song “No Scrubs” all in the same week on Billboard charts! Fast forward to 2018 the impact of the Tony Mercedes imprint can still be heard by his involvement as music publisher of Grammy Award Winning song “ Shape of You” by music superstar Ed Sheeran. Tony Mercedes has worked with so many great artist such as Usher, Babyface, Ceelo Green, Regina Belle, Miki Howard, Aaron Hall just to name a few. Tony Mercedes also recently managed the career of film and comedy superstar Tiffany Haddish.
Hairstylist, barber, bartender, former Orange County Sheriff's Office employee, mom, you name it; female rap artist Lady J has done a lot in her life, but now her focus is on her music. Originally starting in the ‘90s, the aspiring artist got to piggyback off the legendary Jam Pony Express, based out of Ft. Lauderdale. Performing at block parties called Mic Check, Lady J got to experience what the music industry was like first-hand. Artists MC Star & Disco AKA The City Boys took her under their wing to show her the ropes, but Lady J's musical aspirations had to take a time out. Lady J was a single mother of two. It wasn't easy being the sole provider for her two children, so another career came calling. The young mother took an administrative job with the Orange County Clerk of Court. It was stable, had government benefits, and she stayed there for six years. The career path with the county didn't stop. Lady J was hired in 2000 by the Orange County Sheriff's Office and was there doing administrative work for 10 years. Lady J's ambition and creativity came in handy during those years. To make her children even more comfortable, she took on yet another job. “I was a kitchen beautician,” said Lady J, giggling. “I would leave my nine-to-five and tend to my kids, then at night I had clients that would come to the house to get their hair done.” The determined mother was now bringing in two incomes, alone. After 16 years with Orange County, suddenly Lady J found life taking her in a different direction. Her father had fallen ill, so she resigned. Her children were old enough to take care of themselves and she was stable enough to leave her job to care for her family that needed her. “People can judge you know, what you went through in your life, so I decided to turn those experiences into something greater than just gossip,” Lady J said. Years later and now a grandmother of six, the fierce multi-talented woman uses her life experiences to make the lyrics of her songs relatable. “I won't write about things I haven't experienced, so what you get is all me,” Lady J said. It was these experiences that helped create her first song, “Misunderstood,” that she recorded many years after her first experiences with Jam Pony Express. Earlier this year, the female rapper got to open for rapper JT Money — known for his hit “Who Dat,” released in 1999 and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 — at a private birthday celebration for his close friend. In August, Lady J found herself on stage yet again, this time performing with Miami bass and hip hop duo 69 Boyz. Her most recent performance was Labor Day weekend at the Lake Eola amphitheater for the Ouff Live Music Showcase, which was part of the Orlando Urban Film Festival. Lady J said she's often asked why she waited so late in life to get back into music. Her reply is simple. “It's my time, that's all I can say is my time. Back then I probably wasn't mature enough, like, but now I'm mature and that's a blessing. I'm able to be obedient and what I'm called to do, right, back then I probably would have not been as focused, but now I am more stable in life,” Lady J said. Of course, Lady J still loves being a hairstylist and barber. She still has her cosmetology license and a lengthy clientele list. When she's not cutting hair or in the studio recording new tracks, the talented Glam-ma is behind the bar having a few laughs while tending with patrons of Red 13 cigar bar, adding even more life experiences to possibly inspire her next song. When asked what words of advice or wisdom she would give to people who still dream of being a music artist, Lady J said being committed is a major step in the right direction. “It's going to be hard and there will be some bumpy roads along the way... Yes, it's gonna hurt, but wipe the tears away. You got to find strength in it to keep moving,” said Lady J, encouragingly. “That's what I do every day.”
Over the past decade or so, there has been a lingering sentiment that “hip-hop is dead.” Well, fortunately for us, soul is still alive and fortunately for the people that still believe in music from the heart that contains purity in expression-flaws included, artists like Sky Whatley exist. One of the greatest things about being an artist is the ability to change and become who you want to be. No one's music collection should only have one type of artist, and artists shouldn't be pigeon held to sound one way. During his earlier years, Sky Whatley had a sound that was coined as “hood rock.” Proof that rock and hip-hop aren't distant relatives at all, but very closely knit and related. Now, as all artists have a right to, Sky Whatley is seeking expression from his other love: Soul music. Inspired by greats like Prince, Sly Stone and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. This maybe something that his initial fan base may not be aware of after his sleuth of popular songs like “I'm Rick James Bitch” and “Chevy Game” featuring ex-Poison Clan member JT Money. When his “Hood Rock” project was released Sky Whatley suggested that he wasn't “making just an album but a flip on the entire music industry.” His new direction will incorporate soul with a gospel edge that proves that honest music doesn't have to lack on quality. Sky Whatley further admits that he makes his music with “natural talent” and adds “no auto-tunes.” In a time where real artists are too far and in between and flash-in-the-pan hopefuls are on every Facebook page looking for a friend request. Sky Whatley has other plans as a singer/producer/ songwriter and with notable collaborations under his belt including Fabo, Lil Jon, Goodie Mob, B.O.B. Full Bio
