Hal Peary was born Harrold José de Faria to Portuguese parents on July 25th, 1908. He was fourteen when, in January of 1923, he made his radio debut on KZM in Oakland. By the late 1920s he was working for NBC in San Francisco. Migrating to Chicago in 1937, he soon became one of radio's insiders, gaining a reputation as a top utility man. In 1937 he joined the cast of Fibber McGee and Molly playing every kind of bit part imaginable. In the late 1930s, Peary approached McGee's head writer Don Quinn with an idea for a recurring role. He wanted to play a pompous windbag who himself ran the biggest bluff in Wistful Vista. He thought it would be the perfect foil for McGee. Quinn was the kind of man who innately understood how to write for radio. For Quinn it was simply a matter of creating Throckmorton Gildersleeve, moving him to 83 Wistful Vista, and letting the fur fly. Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve's first appearance was on September 26th, 1939. Quinn knew the value of sarcasm in comedy. It was also later revealed that Gildersleeve's middle name was “Philharmonic.” By 1941 the character proved so popular that it was decided to spin Gildersleeve off into its own show. An audition was recorded on May 16th. Peary's last regular appearance on Fibber McGee and Molly was on June 24th in a memorable scene. McGee and Molly are headed to Hollywood for the summer. Oddly enough by the time they got back, it was Gildersleeve who'd permanently departed from Wistful Vista. Tragically, Gildersleeve's sister and brother-in-law were killed in a car accident and he needed to go to Summerfield to oversee their estate and raise his orphaned niece and nephew, Marjorie and Leroy Forrester. He left on August 8th, 1941, creating with him a new American concept: the sitcom spinoff. The show premiered at 2:30PM Pacific Time over KFI in Los Angeles, and at 6:30PM Eastern Time over WEAF in New York. Kraft would sponsor the series. They signed on for thirty-nine weeks over twenty-eight NBC Red Network stations. Gildersleeve's first head writer was Leonard Levinson. The character's long-running feud with Judge Hooker began right from this first train ride. Music was done by William Randolph's orchestra. Cecil Underwood produced the show and Jim Bannon announced. Radio legend Frank Nelson, then on twenty-nine, provided multiple supporting parts in this episode. Walter Tetley played Leroy and Lurene Tuttle played Marjorie.

This Saturday's "Saturday Matinee" on Vintage Classic Radio will kick off with "The Great Gildersleeve,” where the episode "Selling the Drugstore" from February 22nd, 1942, takes us on a humorous journey with Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a character spun off from "Fibber McGee and Molly." In this episode, Gildersleeve contemplates selling the drugstore he's come to own, leading to a series of comedic events and moral dilemmas. The cast features Harold Peary as Gildersleeve, Walter Tetley as Leroy, Lillian Randolph as Birdie, Earle Ross as Judge Hooker, and Richard LeGrand as Mr. Peavey, among others, contributing to the show's unique blend of humor and heartfelt moments. Following that, we'll enjoy "The Burns and Allen Show" in the episode "Jack Benny in the Beauty Shop," originally broadcasted on November 2nd, 1943. This episode showcases the unmatched chemistry of George Burns and Gracie Allen in a hilarious mix-up involving Jack Benny at a beauty shop, leading to a flurry of misunderstandings and witty banter. The episode stars George Burns and Gracie Allen themselves, with Jack Benny playing his own notoriously stingy persona, alongside regulars like Bill Goodwin, the announcer, and musicians like Meredith Willson. To round out our matinee, "The Railroad Hour" presents the musical episode “Orange Blossoms” from February 11th, 1952. This production is a delightful adaptation of the operetta by Victor Herbert, telling a romantic and slightly comedic tale set against the backdrop of the French Riviera. The episode stars Gordon MacRae, bringing his vocal talents to the fore as the lead, with support from Lucille Norman, adding charm and depth to the musical numbers and narrative. Each show from our lineup offers a unique glimpse into the golden age of radio, from the comedic antics of beloved characters in "The Great Gildersleeve" and "The Burns and Allen Show" to the melodious romance of "The Railroad Hour." Together, they create a Saturday matinee that promises laughter, music, and a touch of nostalgia.

In Summerfield, Gildersleeve was the guardian of his orphaned niece and nephew, Marjorie and Leroy Forrester, Marjorie was a teenager who seldom gave any trouble, but Leroy was a wise guy. Gildersleeve gave up the Girdle business and became the water commissioner in Summerfield….a job which required he do just about nothing at all. He lived on Lakeside Avenue with their afro-american housekeeper, Birdie Lee Coggins (Lillian Randolph). He became close friends with Mr. Peavey, who owned the local drugstore. Directly across the street was the residence of Judge Hooker. Further down the street was Floyd Munson's barbershop, where the five chief members of the Jolly Boys Club (Gildy, Peavey, Hooker, Floyd, and Police Chief Gates) gathered for conversation and harmony. The Great Gildersleeve is abundant and available on recordings. The show was very well done. Listeners could hear the children grow up, be present at Marjorie's wedding, share the birth of her twins. Leroy, Birdie, and Judge Hooker remain the same throughout the series. It was a happy show. When Waterman replaced Peary, the show still retained much of its appeal. The resemblance between the two men while on the air was remarkable. This track and more like it can be found in "The Great Gildersleeve" Playlist

Harold is planning to ask Theodora to go to the barn dance. Harold sings, "Auld Lang Syne." Broadcast Airdate: December 27, 1950 Notes: Harold (Hall) Peary (July 25, 1908 – March 30, 1985) was an American actor, comedian and singer in radio, film, television and animation remembered best as Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a supporting character on radio's Fibber McGee & Molly that moved to its own radio hit, The Great Gildersleeve, the first known spinoff hit in American broadcasting history. Born as José Pereira de Faria in San Leandro, California to Portuguese parents, Peary (pronounced Perry) began working in local radio as early as 1923, according to his own memory, and had his own show as a singer, The Spanish Serenader, in San Francisco, but moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1937. In Chicago his radio work came to a peak when he became a regular on Fibber McGee and Molly, where he originated the Gildersleeve character as a McGee neighbor and nemesis in 1938. ("You're a haaa-aa-aard man, McGee" was a famous catch-phrase.) The character actually went through several first names and occupations before settling on Throckmorton Philaharmonic Gildersleeve and his stewardship of a lingerie factory. He also worked on the horror series Lights Out and other radio programs, but his success and popularity as Gildersleeve set the stage for the character's own program. At CBS, Peary began a new situation comedy, The Harold Peary Show, sometimes known as Honest Harold, a title that was actually the name of the fictitious radio show the new character hosted. Radio veteran Joseph Kearns (later familiar as Mr. Wilson on television's Dennis the Menace, played veterinarian Dr. Yancey, known better as Doc Yak-Yak and resembling former foil Judge Hooker. The new show also borrowed a few Gildersleeve plot devices, such as running for mayor and engagements to two women. In what was possibly a desperate attempt to recreate the Gildersleeve magic, it even brought in actress Shirley Mitchell, virtually recreating her Gildersleeve role of Leila Ransom, under the name of Florabelle Breckenridge. Additionally, Honest Harold's secretary at the radio station, Glory, bears a more than passing resemblance to Gildersleeve's Water Department secretary, Bessie: both are stereotypical giggly blondes. Despite these efforts to recreate the power and ratings of "The Great Gildersleeve", The Harold Peary Show lasted only one season of 38 episodes.-WikiPedia

Built around Throckmorton P. Gildersleeve, a character who had been a staple on the classic radio situation comedy Fibber McGee and Molly, The Great Gildersleeve enjoyed its greatest success in the 1940s. Actor Harold Peary played the character during its transition from the parent show into the spin-off and later in a quartet of feature films released at the height of the show's popularity. On Fibber McGee and Molly, Peary's Gildersleeve was a pompous windbag who became a consistent McGee nemesis. "You're a haa-aa-aa-aard man, McGee!" became a Gildersleeve catch phrase. The character was given several conflicting first names on Fibber McGee and Molly, and on one episode his middle name was revealed as Philharmonic. Gildy admits as much at the end of "Gildersleeve's Diary" on the Fibber McGee and Molly series (10/22/40). He soon became so popular that Kraft Foods - looking primarily to promote its Parkay margarine spread - sponsored a new series with Peary's Gildersleeve as the central, slightly softened, and slightly befuddled focus of a lively new family.

As Throckmorton P. Gildersleeves and Judge Hooker complete a game of checkers, LeRoy has a question. He  wants to take the day off of school so he can go to the circus. Fortunately for him, he has two fine examples in these two pillars of the community. A kid listens to the advice from such outstanding citezens. Too bad, they get on a tangent, talking about their old schoolboy days, and all the crazy pranks they played at school. Suddenly fearing what kind of impression their loose tongues might make, they try to downplay their past misdeeds and want to set Leroy down the right path.   Suddenly, reports of school pranks come to light. Gildersleeves thinks he is at the root of it. Leroy has been acting evasive when questioned about the pranks. Circumstantial evidence points to him, and Gildersleeves grows even more concerned. Would Leroy really stoop to such disruptive pranks? Feeling responsible, Gilersleeves tries to set things right, but you have to know that it somehow won't quite work out right. A lesson in responsibility, consequences, and taking responsibility for your actions is delivered in a light hearted way.   Bonus Tracks: Graham McNamee. 1940. Talks to Ward Wilson about, Mike Checks.
