Paul Cornell (Doctor Who, Elementary) and Lizbeth Myles (Big Finish, Verity!), discuss the Science Fiction and Fantasy television made in the UK every year from 1953 to the present day. In this episode, we discuss The Adventures of Sir Lancelot (1956).
It's a 21st century phenomenon, as you might expect, without historical antecedent. After all, when the knights of the roundtable sat down to discuss business, Sir Lancelot probably wasn't fixated...

We took a look at a British tv series from the 1950s, dramatising the Arthurian story in a high-romance fashion. Believe it or not, it's pretty good! Starring William Russell–who later played “Ian” on Doctor Who–it's a fairly faithful rendering of the story, with Lancelot as an outsider who comes to Arthur's court, Gawain as his rival, a belligerent Kay, and a Merlin who is part magician, part con-man. Lancelot isn't just the best of knights here, he's also a champion of underdogs, defying the more hierarchical standards of Camelot–it's no surprise to find out that several of the writers for the show were Americans who were blacklisted during the Red Scare. Once again, the Arthurian world is used as a playground for utopian politics, not unlike Twain's Connecticut Yankee and T.H. White's Once and Future King. Starring William Russell, Cyril Smith, Ronald Leigh-Hunt, Robert Scroggins, and Jane Hylton. With various writers and directors depending on the episode.
Michael and Rob welcome back Jacob Bean-Watson to discuss what's either a tangential Christmas movie or a Christmas ghost story, depending on your point of view. It's The Curse of the Cat People, Val Lewton's controversial follow-up to his noir horror film Cat People from a couple of years earlier. Simone Simon, Kent Smith, Jane Randolph, and Elizabeth Russell return from the earlier movie, joined this time by child actor Ann Carter, Lewton-favorite Sir Lancelot, and Julia Dean.

After that, we'll delve into the mystical and mysterious world of The Green Knight and switch gears for some light-hearted adventures with Mike the Knight.Top 5 Knights in Film and Television:Sir Lancelot in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" (1975) - This comedic take on the legendary knight mixes absurdity with classic Arthurian elements, making Sir Lancelot both heroic and hilariously oblivious.Aragorn in "The Lord of the Rings" series - While not a knight in the traditional sense, Aragorn embodies the knightly virtues of bravery, loyalty, and leadership, playing a crucial role in Middle-earth's battles against evil.Sir William Thatcher in "A Knight's Tale" (2001) - Portrayed by Heath Ledger, Sir William's journey from peasant to pseudo-knight captures the spirit of chivalry and the pursuit of honor and recognition within the rigid class systems of medieval society. The Black Knight in "Excalibur" (1981) - A mysterious and formidable figure, the Black Knight in this retelling of the Arthurian legends represents the darker aspects of knighthood and chivalry, providing a stark contrast to more idealistic portrayals.Brienne of Tarth in "Game of Thrones" (TV Series) - Brienne challenges traditional gender roles within the knightly order, proving herself through unmatched bravery and a firm moral compass, making her one of the most respected and memorable knights in modern television. The Green Knight (2021) Directed by David Lowery, The Green Knight presents a visually stunning and thematically rich adaptation of the Arthurian legend, "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." The film follows Gawain, played by Dev Patel, on a perilous quest that explores themes of honor, bravery, and the nature of true heroism. The movie's slow-burning narrative and atmospheric tension set it apart from traditional knightly tales, offering a fresh take on the complexities of personal growth and virtue.Switching to a much lighter tone, Mike the Knight is a delightful animated series that introduces younger audiences to a fantastical medieval world. Mike, a young knight-in-training, embarks on adventures that teach him about responsibility, problem-solving, and the importance of being kind. It's a great way to introduce the concepts of knighthood and chivalry to kids in an engaging and educational manner.Whether you're in the mood for a profound cinematic experience with The Green Knight or looking for family-friendly fun with Mike the Knight, today's episode promises a thrilling exploration of what it means to be a knight in both lore and life. Join us as we don the armor of analysis and venture forth into the realm of knights and nobility.

New Hampshire Unscripted talks with the performance arts movers and shakers
Franklin Footlight Theatre showed up to chat about their upcoming production of SPAMALOT. We had actors, an assistant director, a choreographer, one person just hanging out and taking pictures (I'm looking at you Olivia Martenson!). And talked about classic Monty Python gags, laughs, audience expectations, crappy accents (except my Inspector Clouseau French one was spot on), and thanks to Hayley de Sousa we even (gingerly) threw in some info on their NEXT show TWISTED. SPAMALOT has all of the characters that you would expect including King Arthur, Lancelot (the homicidally brave), Lady of the Lake (complete with Laker Girls), Sir Robin (the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot), Sir Galahad, Sir Bedevere, Patsy, Prince Herbert, Concorde and many more. I'm breakin' a sweat just typing it all!! Show dates and tickets: Aug 1-4 at the Hamilton Hall, Tilton School.
The WKXL NH Unscripted studio was packed today with cast and crew from the Franklin Footlight production of Monty Python's SPAMALOT going up Aug 1-4 at the Tilton School's Hamilton Hall. SPAMALOT is a Camelot spoof and is absolutely hilarious for those that don't know and we talked about it all. The show is filled with classic MP gags and routines and we discussed as much of them as we could. There was even an accent challenge at one point with yours truly failing miserably! The show has all of the characters that you would expect including King Arthur, Lancelot (the homicidally brave), Lady of the Lake (complete with Laker Girls), Sir Robin (the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot), Sir Galahad, Sir Bedevere, Patsy, Prince Herbert, Concorde and many more. Choreography? Oh yeah, in spades! My friends, go out to dinner and then go see this show. You will not be disappointed!
WARREN CUMMINGS on NEW NEW DOCTOR WHO and the acting life of WILLIAM RUSSELL ENOCH With the sad passing of WILLIAM RUSSELL at the grand old age of ninety-nine years in early June, WARREN CUMMINGS wanted to join me on VISION ON SOUND to talk, amongst other things, the incredible life of this much-loved actor from his particularly personal point of view, as well as, inevitably, because that is the nature of this show, discussing a few other topics that happened to cross our minds along the way. As well as featuring in several well-known post-war British films, WILLIAM RUSSELL (who was also known professionally as RUSSELL ENOCH), played SIR LANCELOT in the ITC series of the 1950s, and, of course, schoolteacher IAN CHESTERTON, one of DOCTOR WHO's fellow adventurers right back at the very start of the show in 1963, and he had a long and distinguished acting career, featuring in many of exactly the kinds of TV shows that we love to talk about on this show, ending his career with an unexpected cameo in THE POWER OF THE DOCTOR in 2022, and could be said to have had the kind of career that covered almost the entire era of television itself, which makes talking about his life a perfect subject for us to be tackling. First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on July 7th 2024. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.
Doctor Who icon William Russell sadly passed away this week at the age of 99. He was Ian Chesterton, first male companion of the Doctor, and we had a rare chance to sit and talk with him in 2018 at a convention in Baltimore, MD. In remembrance of William Russell, we present to you our interview from 2018 discussing Doctor Who and his time as the great Sir Lancelot! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/doctorwhoandcompany/support
In this episode, we're exploring stories of heroes who lost themselves in some way and had to find themselves again. We'll see how Heracles's Twelve Labors -- the things that made him one of the most famous demigods of all time -- only happened because of something he did while under a terrible curse. We'll also see how going into a frenzy makes some Norse warriors much more fearsome, and some Arthurian knights very much the opposite, and we'll hear a little about a mysterious prophecy making its way through the mythical world. Visit the World of Mythik website to learn more and to contribute your theories to our board! All stories told on Myths & Muses are original family-friendly adaptations of ancient myths and legends. Stories from ancient mythology can also sometimes deal with complicated topics for young listeners — to the mortal parents and caretakers reading this, we encourage listening along with your young demigods to help them navigate those topics as they explore these epic tales. In AD 932, King Arthur and his squire, Patsy, travel Britain searching for men to join the Knights of the Round Table. Along the way, Arthur debates whether swallows could carry coconuts, passes through a town infected with the plague, recounts receiving Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake to two anarcho-syndicalist peasants, defeats the Black Knight, and observes an impromptu witch trial. He recruits Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Galahad the Pure, Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, and the aptly named Sir Not-Appearing-in-this-Film, along with their squires and Robin's minstrels. Arthur leads the knights to Camelot, but, after a musical number, changes his mind, deeming it "a silly place". As they turn away, God appears and orders Arthur to find the Holy Grail. Arthur and his knights arrive at a castle occupied by French soldiers, who claim to have the Grail and taunt the Britons, driving them back with a barrage of barnyard animals. Bedevere concocts a plan to sneak in using a Trojan Rabbit, but forgets to tell the others to hide inside it; the Knights are forced to flee when it is flung back at them. Arthur decides the knights should go their separate ways to search for the Grail. A modern-day historian filming a documentary on the Arthurian legends is killed by an unknown knight on horseback, triggering a police investigation. Arthur and Bedevere are given directions by an old man and attempt to satisfy the strange requests of the dreaded Knights Who Say "Ni!". Sir Robin avoids a fight with a Three-Headed Knight by running away while the heads are arguing among themselves. Sir Galahad is led by a grail-shaped beacon to Castle Anthrax, which is occupied exclusively by young women, who wish to be punished for misleading him, but he is unwillingly "rescued" by Lancelot. Lancelot receives an arrow-shot note from Swamp Castle. Believing the note is from a lady being forced to marry against her will, he storms the castle and slaughters several members of the wedding party, only to discover the note is from an effeminate prince. Arthur and his knights regroup and are joined by Brother Maynard, his monk brethren, and three new knights: Bors, Gawain and Ector. They meet Tim the Enchanter, who directs them to a cave where the location of the Grail is said to be written. The entrance to the cave is guarded by the Rabbit of Caerbannog. Underestimating it, the knights attack, but the Rabbit easily kills Bors, Gawain and Ector. Arthur uses the "Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch", provided by Brother Maynard, to destroy the creature. Inside the cave, they find an inscription from Joseph of Arimathea, directing them to Castle Aarrgh. A cave monster devours Brother Maynard, but Arthur and the knights escape after the animator unexpectedly suffers a fatal heart attack. The knights approach the Bridge of Death, where the bridge-keeper demands they answer three questions in order to pass or else be cast into the Gorge of Eternal Peril. Lancelot easily answers simple questions and crosses. An overly cocky Robin is defeated by an unexpectedly difficult question, and an indecisive Galahad fails an easy one; both are magically flung into the gorge. When Arthur asks for clarification on a question regarding the airspeed of an unladen swallow, the bridge-keeper cannot answer and is himself thrown into the gorge. Arthur and Bedevere cannot find Lancelot, unaware that he has been arrested by police investigating the historian's death. The pair reach Castle Aarrgh, but find it occupied by the French soldiers from earlier in the film. After being repelled by showers of manure, they summon an army of knights and prepare to assault the castle. As the army charges, the police arrive, arrest Arthur and Bedevere for the murder of the historian and break the camera, abruptly ending the film

Welcome to Stories Come to Life. I am your host, Kathryn Lopez Luker. Lynette, a beautiful but very proud and haughty maiden, begs for King Arthur to send his very best knight to rescue her sister from the clutches of four evil knights. She insists that Sir Lancelot be the one to help. King Arthur, however, has another idea as a different, but still fine and worthy knight, is available. Maybe enduring the mocking maiden is one of the things Sir Gareth needs to face as he goes on this valiant quest.Merlin, by now, is very old and very tired. He longs for rest and knows he doesn't need to watch all the adventures of King Arthur and his knights unfold. Lovely Nimue, who is a magical fairy herself, asks Merlin to come to Broceliande where the green tree and the white marble stone and the gentle fountain are waiting for him. FLORIDAI INGATLANOS Lénárd Lancelot S. - MÓKA Podcast New York ep.187 Lancelot Sebastian Lenard a Sir Lancelot Group kiváló vezetője, az ingatlaniparban a kiválóság jelképe. Lancelot elkötelezettsége a kiválóság iránt a magánéletében is megmutatkozik, amit jól példáz, hogy fiatalon megszerezte a nagyra becsült Eagle Scout rangot. Lancelot közösségi szerepvállalása ugyanilyen figyelemre méltó: aktív szerepet vállal a Daytona Beach Regionális Kereskedelmi Kamarában, a YPN-ben, a DBAA Realtorsban, a StellarMLS-ben, a Real Men Wear Pinkben, a Women's Council of Realtorsban és az RRC - Residential Real Estate Councilban. Tonight drift off to a relaxing bedtime story steeped in Arthurian legend. Tonight's sleep story centres around the infamous Lady of the Lake and the young Sir Lancelot she takes in and raises beneath the surface of the lake in Avalon.
TRIGGER WARNING—Rape Shannon is a self-admitted under-assertive woman. And life's given her enough low blows to force her to become a different version of herself. When she was 20 she was raped by an acquaintance. It was the kind of incident where she knows how many times she said “No,” but it still took two years before she realized it was rape. Find out how deep and long lasting the damage from this kind of violation can be. Discover how Shannon's coping and healing, still decades later. Learn why it's so important for men to check themselves to prevent lifelong constellations of damage to the individuals they abuse. Bio Shannon Anne Watson, or S.A. Watson (that's right, she was a bard from birth), has always loved history, mystery, and poetry. When she was a little girl, she fashioned poems in her head while doing her backyard chores. She read obsessively, mostly about Indigenous and Colonial America. She spent long hours in her room, writing and illustrating books of folded paper. She produced plays, acting them out in costume, alone or with the neighborhood children. Always, always, she created. Now, Watson is an award-winning poet and author. Her poetry is in the Library of Congress and on audio. Many other poems are written expressly for and included in her works of fiction. Watson has several series in the works. The first of these, The Annals of Anavere, which is a series of twelve historical fiction novels, explores the history behind the legends of King Arthur, Queen Guinevere, and Sir Lancelot. For it, Watson translated every name in the Arthurian corpus: personal, tribal, weapons, objects, and placenames, such as Avalon, Camelot, and the Holy Grail. Even the names of Arthur's dog and Gawain's sword are included. So far as is known in the long history of Arthurian research and fiction, this translation has never been accomplished. In addition to The Annals of Anavere, Watson has several other series and stand-alone books in the works. She is currently writing a series of three novels, The Haunted House Histories. A departure from her usual historical fiction, The Histories – or H3 – is comprised of what she terms “historical ghost-stories” A third series, The Fleur d'Lis Mysteries, begins by telling the story of Baron Gilles de Rais – one of Joan of Arc's captains and the erroneously-titled Bluebeard – from the triple perspectives of Gilles, of Gilles' daughter, Marie de Rais…and of an old friend, long-dead. Research continues on the two subsequent books in The Mysteries series. She is also editing Butterfly Kisses, a book of her original poetry. Watson hopes to release the first of these books within the next year. When she is not researching, writing, or editing her books, Watson can be found listening to P!nk's latest album, drinking copious amounts of coffee while huddled over her laptop at the Koffee Klatch in hopes of looking like a busy, successful author, watching The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and laughing her ass off, or staring at the ocean in her native Laguna Beach like she's never seen it before. Plot:In AD 932, King Arthur and his squire, Patsy, travel Britain searching for men to join the Knights of the Round Table. Along the way, Arthur debates whether swallows could carry coconuts, passes through a town infected with the Black Death, recounts receiving Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake to two anarcho-syndicalist peasants, defeats the Black Knight and observes an impromptu witch trial. He recruits Sir Bedevere the Wise, Sir Lancelot the Brave, Sir Galahad the Pure, and Sir Robin the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot, along with their squires and Robin's minstrels. Bedevere concocts a plan to sneak in using a Trojan Rabbit, but no one hides inside it, and the Britons are forced to flee when it is flung back at them. Arthur decides the knights should go their separate ways to search for the Grail.A modern-day historian filming a documentary on the Arthurian legends is killed by an unknown knight on horseback, triggering a police investigation. Arthur and Bedevere are given directions by an old man and attempt to satisfy the strange requests of the dreaded Knights Who Say "Ni!" Sir Robin avoids a fight with a Three-Headed Knight by running away while the heads are arguing amongst themselves. Arthur and his knights regroup and are joined by three new knights, as well as Brother Maynard and his monk brethren. An animated cave monster devours Brother Maynard, but Arthur and the knights escape after the animator unexpectedly suffers a fatal heart attack. The knights approach the Bridge of Death, where the bridge-keeper demands they answer three questions in order to pass or else be cast into the Gorge of Eternal Peril. Lancelot easily answers simple questions and crosses. Robin is defeated by an unexpectedly difficult question, and Galahad fails an easy one; both are magically flung into the gorge. When Arthur asks for clarification on an obscure question about swallows, the bridge-keeper cannot answer and is himself thrown into the gorge. Arthur and Bedevere cannot find Lancelot, unaware that he has been arrested by police investigating the historian's death. The pair reach Castle Aarrgh, but find it occupied by the French soldiers. After being repelled by showers of manure, they summon an army of knights and prepare to assault the castle. As the army charges, the police arrive, arrest Arthur and Bedevere for the murder of the historian and break the camera, ending the film. TOP 51: Done on an incredibly small budget, the Pythons found funding from an unlikely sources—rock bands. Groups like Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, and Pink Floyd helped get the money up for the production, with a portion of the funds coming from the Floyd's album “The Dark Side of the Moon.” This is a trend that would continue later with The Life of Brian, when a large portion of the funding came from former Beatle George Harrison. When Harrison was asked why he funded the film, he responded “Because I wanted to see it.” 2: The film also represents the directorial debuts of both Terry Jones and Terry Gilliam, who decided that anyone named Terry got to direct the Pythons' first film. Attempting to co-direct at the same time led to conflicts, so the Terrys split up the responsibilities with Jones handling the actors while Gilliam worked on the cinematography. They'd go on to direct the remaining Python films together and Jones would additionally direct Mr. Toad's Wild Ride, while Gilliam's lengthy directorial career would include such artistic classics as The Fisher King, Brazil, Time Bandits, Twelve Monkeys, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, and more. 3: The vicious Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog had parts of its fur dyed red to represent the blood of the knights that it spilt with its large, pointy teeth. Unfortunately, the dye used wouldn't wash out afterwards and the rabbit's owner was furious. 4: By the time the Pythons actually got around to doing the credits, they'd run out of money. As a result, the credits were very simple and Palin decided to spice them up a bit by adding the Swedish subtitles and llama references. When the film was shown for the first time at Cannes, firemen rushed in at the end of the credits to evacuate the audience due to a bomb scare. The crowd didn't leave at first because they thought it was part of the show. 5: n part due to the low budget, Chapman and Cleese did all their own stunts for the Black Knight scene. The two used heavy swords and some acrobatics for added realism. Connie Booth had brought her and Cleese's young daughter to the filming, who during the fight turned to her mum and said “Daddy doesn't like that man, does he?” **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING**TreyChrisStephen 1.5Tucker 3 TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 Saving Private Ryan3 Ghostbusters4 Sandlot5 Color out of space Chris:1. sandlots2.
