Joining us today is The Sun's short boxing writer who loves a tall fistic tale, whether it's roasting hot in York Hall or self-loathing in Las Vegas – but never rowdy in Saudi. It's Wally Downes Jr, fresh from Riyadh where he oversaw Dmitry Bivol's successful revenge mission against Artur Beterbiev. Wally's just come from the first Chris Eubank Jr-Conor Benn press conference (sponsored by Riyadh Season) where the Brighton boxer egged his opponent – so we ask Wally if it's fair to say that such cracking shithousery wouldn't be egged on in Jeddah? We also talk about Aaron McKenna's shot at Liam Smith on the same card, why Wally loves an underdog story, cutting through PR to report on boxing in 2025, the challenge of writing about sportswashing, why DAZN doesn't always work for fighters on the rise as well as that Last Crescendo card, Andy Lee's excellent stewardship of ‘Gypsy' Joe Parker and his man Paddy Donovan's upcoming derby battle with Lewis Crocker. Dwyer opines on the upcoming heavyweight boxing match.
Uh oh. The murky world of boxing has slung another curve ball, this time in the direction of Joseph Parker. The kiwi former heavyweight champion of the world, who has gradually punched his way back into contention has had the canvas whipped out from under him ahead of his IBF heavyweight strap clash against Englishman Daniel Dubois. Set to go tomorrow morning in Saudi Arabia, Dubois has pulled up crook, although the nature of his illness is yet to be determined, it's enough to keep him out of the squared circle. At very late notice, Congolese fighter Martin Bakole has been lured in to have a crack. He's a monstrous character. His 21 and 1 record speaks enough, with his 16 knock outs coming early. But it's the assertion from many that he is the most avoided boxer in his division that grabs the attention of most. He's called the Boogieman of the division, no-one wants a bar of him. Joe Parker has a history of taking on allcomers and he appears unperturbed by the last minute changeout. Have gloves, will fight, which is not unlike Bukole. The Congolese (who fights out of Scotland), has been described as a throwback, a fighter who doesn't require time in camp, a fighter who isn't a sculptured athlete, just a huge man who stands and delivers. He is not a nuanced boxer. Minimal movement, both in body and feet, but with a heavy punch, thrown in combinations, from rather unorthodox outside angles. Even though he poses a threat, as all the big bangers do, Joe just needs to fight smart, keep moving and wait until Bukole tires. Then move in and finish him off. Parker has greater experience with the long game, a better engine and a measured fight plan that he has applied with precision and due success over his last 2 fights with Zhang and Wilder. Bakole is a puncher, Parker is a boxer. As frightening as Bakole is, I'll take the brains over brawn any day. That'll do.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Researchers from Trinity College Dublin are partnering with CKDelta to take an AI-driven approach to tackle some key efficiency and sustainability challenges faced by the utilities sector. CKDelta is an AI software business within CKI Innovations Opportunities Development (CKH IOD), a member of CK Hutchison Holdings, leveraging data, expertise and intellectual property to drive improved business performance. Headquartered in Dublin, CKDelta is providing €865,000 in funding to support the appointment of a postdoctoral researcher and a number of PhD students, who will work on a range of research projects under the supervision of Professor GregFenory O'Hare, Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Head of Trinity's School of Computer Science and Statistics. The research projects will fall under two main umbrellas: predictive maintenance and early warning systems. Predictive maintenance is a data-driven approach that uses AI to monitor the condition and performance of assets and predict when they need servicing or replacement. As a consequence, maintenance can be scheduled at the optimal time, avoiding unnecessary downtime, reducing operational expenses, and improving safety and reliability. The research collaboration will seek to deliver predictive maintenance models that provide better insights for informed decision-making, with maintenance currently often driven on the foot of customer complaints and logs of issues as they arise. Early warning systems represent a set of tools and methods that aim to detect, monitor, and forecast potential threats or disruptions to utility companies. In the case of the water industry, they provide benefits in cases such as leaks, bursts, floods, sewerage overflows and blockages. The research programme also seeks to enhance an early warning system to improve the efficiency, reliability, and resilience of the water network, reduce operational and maintenance costs, enhance customer satisfaction and trust, and protect public health and the environment. It also aims to develop an anomaly detection system to identify near real-time differences from expected behaviours, which may be reusable/adaptable to other situations. In addition to the funding, experts from CKDelta will be providing the platforms in which the Trinity researchers can investigate the data, as well as offering data engineering and data science support. Prof. Gregory O'Hare, Trinity, said: "We are very grateful to CKDelta for their support and look forward to pooling our expertise as we seek to address some of the most pressing challenges affecting the utilities sector. The scale of the challenges means there is also a significant opportunity to improve sustainability and efficiency, and we believe our data- and AI-driven approach offers great potential in taking a tangible leap forwards. "We hope that this collaboration will form the basis of a sustained, trusted and mutually beneficial relationship. This will be centred around a co-laboratory where the shared expertise of both Trinity and CKDelta will help with the effective, informed and judicious adoption and deployment of appropriate cutting-edge AI technologies within the CKDelta utilities client portfolio and beyond." Joe Parker, CEO of CKH IOD, said: "This collaboration combines two complementary forces in AI: the frontier research capabilities of Trinity College Dublin - and its ability to experiment, innovate and test new ideas without restriction in a way that few commercial organisations can; with CK Delta's unique capacity to apply innovation directly to real-world commercial challenges, to help businesses thrive in an increasingly data-driven economy. "Throughout the next four years, the partnership will generate new streams of knowledge transfer, with cross-pollination of skills, perspectives and specialisms that may otherwise be impossible."

In this episode of the Salty Saints Podcast, we had the pleasure of welcoming Jon Streeter and Joe Parker, the dynamic duo behind the 15 Minute History Podcast. Our conversation delved into the complexities of historical figures, particularly the idea that even our greatest heroes are not without flaws. Jon, a professional historian, and Joe, who describes himself as an amateur historian with a passion for the human side of history, shared insights into their podcast format, which presents historical topics in digestible 15-minute segments followed by longer discussions. They highlighted their recent season focused on "villains," contrasting it with their previous season on "heroes." This led us to explore the notion that many historical figures, often revered as heroes, have significant flaws that complicate their legacies. We discussed examples such as Winston Churchill, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln, acknowledging their contributions to history while also recognizing their shortcomings. Jon emphasized the importance of presenting a balanced view of history, one that acknowledges the imperfections of these figures, as it makes them more relatable and attainable for us as individuals. Joe added that understanding the flaws of historical figures allows us to learn from them and discern which qualities we might want to emulate in our own lives. The conversation took a deeper turn as we examined the societal tendency to categorize individuals as either heroes or villains, often overlooking the nuances of their actions and motivations. We reflected on how this black-and-white thinking can lead to a distorted understanding of history and the people within it. Jon and Joe articulated that the motivations behind actions—whether selfless or selfish—play a crucial role in determining how we perceive historical figures. We also touched on the contemporary issue of tearing down statues and the debate surrounding historical legacies. Jon pointed out that both sides of the argument often expect historical figures to be flawless, which is an unrealistic standard. He argued for the importance of preserving history, even when it includes uncomfortable truths, and suggested that we should strive to learn from the past rather than erase it. As we wrapped up the episode, we discussed the significance of studying history not only to avoid repeating past mistakes but also to gain a clearer understanding of our present and future. Jon and Joe encouraged listeners to engage with history critically, seeking out multiple perspectives and being open to the complexities of human nature. This episode serves as a reminder that history is not just a collection of facts but a rich tapestry of human experiences, filled with lessons that can guide us in our own lives. Chatting With Sherri welcomes author; Elaine Schroller! Elaine Schroller writes about love, loss, and redemption experienced by Australian, American, and French characters during WWI and WWII. DARE NOT TELL is the story of Joe Parker, an Australian WWI vet, and his American wife Sophie, a WWI nurse. It begins with Sophie and Joe's chance meeting in 1916 Paris and chronicles their relationship through thick and thin up to the threshold of WWII. THE BRAVEST SOLDIERS is set in Australia and the South West Pacific Area during World War II and explores how the women who wait at home must be the bravest soldiers. The book features Sophie and Joe, their sons, visitors from the US, plus a new romance and a trio of children whom life has treated very unfairly. Elaine is currently writing the next chapter in Sophie and Joe's story to discover the truth about what happened to Joe's brother Robbie, who was declared ‘Missing, presumed dead' in April 1917. She was an oil brat, and attended high schools in Algeria, England, Texas, and Lebanon. Her degree is in History, which gave her the perfect training for researching specific places and events in DARE NOT TELL and THE BRAVEST SOLDIERS. She has traveled to all but one of the countries in the books and visited all the sites where the stories take place, some more than once. For many years she has lived in Bellaire, Texas where she and her husband raised their son and had multiple rescue cocker spaniels underfoot. She's a member of the Historical Novel Society and the Women's Fiction Writers Association and hopes you will love reading her books as much as she loved writing them.

Contributor: Kiersten Williams MD, Travis Barlock MD, Jeffrey Olson MS2 Summary: In this episode, Dr. Travis Barlock and Jeffrey Olson meet in the studio to discuss a clip from Dr. Williams' talk at the “Laboring Under Pressure, Managing Obstetric Emergencies in a Global Setting” event from May 2023. This event was hosted at the University of Denver and was organized with the help of Joe Parker as a fundraiser for the organization Health Outreach Latin America (HOLA). Dr. Kiersten Williams completed her OBGYN residency at Bay State Medical Center and practices as an Obstetric Hospitalist at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center in Denver, Colorado. During her talk, Dr. Williams walks the audience through the common causes and treatments for post-partum hemorrhage (PPH). Some important take-away points from this talk are: The most common causes of PPH can be remembered by the 4 T's. Tone (atony), Trauma, Tissue (retained placenta), and Thrombin (coagulopathies). AV malformations of the uterus are probably underdiagnosed. Quantitative blood loss is much more accurate than estimated blood loss (EBL). The ideal fibrinogen for an obstetric patient about to deliver is above 400 mg/dl - under 200 is certain to cause bleeding. Do not deliver oxytocin via IV push dose, it can cause significant hypotension. Tranexamic Acid is available in both IV and PO and can be administered in the field. The dose is 1 gram and can be run over 10 minutes if administered via IV. It is best if used within 3 hours of delivery. When performing a uterine massage, place one hand inside the vagina and one hand on the lower abdomen. Then rub the lower abdomen like mad. A new option for treating PPH is called the JADA System which is slimmer than a Bakri Balloon and uses vacuum suction to help the uterus clamp down.* Another option for a small uterus is to insert a 60 cc Foley catheter. In an operating room, a B-Lynch suture can be put in place, uterine artery ligation can be performed, and as a last resort, a hysterectomy can be done. *EMM is not sponsored by JADA system or the Bakri balloon. Contributor: Jason Papazian MD, Travis Barlock MD, Jeffrey Olson Summary: In this episode, Dr. Travis Barlock and Jeffrey Olson meet in the studio to discuss several clips from Dr. Jason Papazian's talk at the event “Laboring Under Pressure, Managing Obstetric Emergencies in a Global Setting” from May 2023. This event was hosted at the University of Denver and was organized with the help of Joe Parker as a fundraiser for the organization Health Outreach Latin America (HOLA). Dr. Jason Papazian practices Obstetric Anesthesiology for the Maternal Fetal Care Unit at Children's Hospital Colorado. He is the Assistant Program Director of Didactics for the Anesthesiology Residency at the University of Colorado, as well as the Faculty Advisor to Residents and Obstetric Anesthesiology Fellows. During his talk, Dr. Papazian walks the audience through the steps of a maternal cardiac arrest from initial rapid response, to intubation, CPR, ACLS, and eventually emergency cesarean section. Some important take-away points from this talk are: The basics save lives. Focus on oxygenating the patient and providing high quality CPR In order to maximize blood return during CPR on an obstetric patient, manually retract the gravid uterus to the left If an arresting mother does not obtain return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) by 4 minutes, the most qualified person should perform a rapid 1-minute bedside cesarean section. This has mortality benefits for both the mother and the infant. Other medical topics discussed include changes in the obstetric patient's physiology, roles during a rapid response, steps of intubation, causes of cardiac arrest, management of cardiac arrest, and how pregnancy does (and doesn't) change ACLS.
