We took a look at a British tv series from the 1950s, dramatising the Arthurian story in a high-romance fashion. Believe it or not, it's pretty good! Starring William Russell–who later played “Ian” on Doctor Who–it's a fairly faithful rendering of the story, with Lancelot as an outsider who comes to Arthur's court, Gawain as his rival, a belligerent Kay, and a Merlin who is part magician, part con-man. Lancelot isn't just the best of knights here, he's also a champion of underdogs, defying the more hierarchical standards of Camelot–it's no surprise to find out that several of the writers for the show were Americans who were blacklisted during the Red Scare. Once again, the Arthurian world is used as a playground for utopian politics, not unlike Twain's Connecticut Yankee and T.H. White's Once and Future King. Today I'm going to be doing a reading from my favorite of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. An early major plot point in the book the Yankee uses an eclipse to get out of being held hostage and to gain power in the court.

In anticipation of the total solar eclipse forecast for April 8, author and journalist David Baron joins co-hosts Whitney Terrell and V.V. Ganeshananthan to discuss his award-winning book, American Eclipse, which chronicles the remarkable solar eclipse of 1878. Baron, a self-proclaimed umbraphile, or eclipse chaser, explains why he chose to write about the Wild West-era event, which darkened skies from Montana to Texas. He also talks about what has driven him to see eight total solar eclipses across the globe. As the upcoming eclipse is forecast to affect a sizable swath of the U.S.—the last time this will happen until 2045—he reflects on why these rare occurrences captivate humanity and discusses how their lore has influenced famous writers, including Mark Twain and Emily Dickinson. We start the first of a two-part series examining the musical Camelot, the Broadway hit based on T.H. White's The Once and Future King, which I recently re-read in preparation. For part one, we look at both the original cast recording from 1960, as well as two clips from the Ed Sullivan show, featuring Richard Burton as King Arthur and Julie Andrews as Guenevere. Unfortunately, this is all we could find of that particular version of the show. We were, however, able to find a 1981 stage revival starring Richard Harris and Meg Bussart and filmed for HBO.  The 1981 production differs from the original production, streamlining some elements, cutting some characters, but largely is the same show. In both cases, the effort to condense a 700-page novel into a two and a half hour musical greatly simplifies some of the driving philosophy of the book—as much a meditation on politics and the rise of fascism as it is a consciously-anachronistic fantasy and elegy for a dying world (very much reading like Lord of the Rings meets A Connecticut Yankee). However, focusing on the love triangle and Arthur's conundrum of balancing justice and mercy, might and right, makes for an effective musical, one which even influenced the popular culture conception of the then-current Kennedy administration. We're surveying a selection of Bugs Bunny cartoons, all with a medieval theme, some of which are explicitly Arthurian.   The earliest, "Knights Must Fall", is a pretty generic burlesque of Bugs Bunny versus a powerful knight, but draws some inspiration from A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, especially in Bugs's use of locomotives and whatnot.   "Knight Mare Hare" is a pretty unfocused take on Connecticut Yankee, complete with framing device, and while it's not a particularly tight cartoon, it has some classic Chuck Jones abstract backgrounds, and some pretty good gags.   "Knighty Knight Bugs" is a much more tightly-constructed story, with Bugs being sent by King Arthur to recover the Singing Sword, only to encounter Yosemite Sam as the Black Knight. This won the Academy Award for best animated short, and it's not hard to understand why.   "Bugs Bunny in King Arthur's Court" is an oddity--a 20-minute retelling of Connecticut Yankee made in 1978, it's sometimes surprisingly faithful to Twain's novel--like Bugs setting up factories like Hank Morgan--while at other times making extremely strange choices, like having Daffy Duck as King Arthur.   Voices by Mel Blanc. Mark Twain reminds us that baseball was popular as far back as his time- and the stock market was also a big deal. Twain uses the term "squeezes the shorts" which is still a popular term today for a stock market move. In baseball, all the Arthurian players wore armor- which creates some pretty wild plays. These two chapters are a little slow so have some patience-Twin is trying to give us some lessons in economics- that being that one dollar in one economy might be considered very little- yet in another that same dollar is considered a fortune. Think of the North vs The South in the Civil War, In the south, a wheelbarrow of paper money was worth next to nothing, while in the North, a couple dollars could buy you some clothing. Hank (the Boss) could be a hero and a bum at the same time- and Chapter v32 is a good example. Chapter 31- The Boss (Hank) and his host Marco stroll through a village and Hank is fascinated by the way Marco treats different classes of people. Then Hank invites other tradesmen to dine at Marco's house. Hank claims the King is a farmer named Jones Chapter 32- At the dinner Hank spends money like there is no tomorrow in the eyes of those present-To them 4 dollars seems like millions. As the Boss and The King travel through the king's land the King is witness to the tyranny and despair his subjects have to face- and literally sees them chased and hung and starved and imprisoned by nobles for no good reason- yet the King can't comprehend that there is anything wrong with any of that. These are two remarkable chapters in my opinion and here's why: In chapter 21 The Boss comes upon a long line of slaves consisting of men, women, and children, and describes in no uncertain terms the horror and sadness of their situation. This should dispel any doubts modern readers/listeners might have about Twain's view of slavery; in chapter 22 The Boss finally realizes how much he appreciates the abilities of Sandy, who, in spite of her long, long descriptions, can provide accurate depictions of wars, genealogies, and histories like no other person.
