Ok.  Just to be upfront, this episode includes puppies in bowties.  PUPPIES IN BOWTIES!  How can you get more adorable than that?  By having a young man sew them to help get pets in shelters adopted.   Our main story is not quite so light, dealing with overcoming the damaging effects of so-called "gay conversion therapy".  Julie Rodgers bravely tells her story of how she went from the face of gay conversion camps to an outspoken activist against the practice that has traumatized far too may young people.  Check out her book, Outlove: A Queer Christian Survival Story.  Amy then lightens the mood with the heartwarming story of how two nurses are bringing birthday celebrations to kids that might otherwise not have a birthday.  These ladies are awesome and doing so much good in the world.  This episode has a little bit of everything, plus puppies in bowties.  What are you waiting for?  Have a listen. We would love to hear from you.  Send us your comments or even your own inspirational stories at tangentialinspiration@gmail.com or give us your comments on our website, TangentialInspiration.com.Follow us on our social media:Website: https://tangentialinspiration.com/Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/tangentialinspiration/Facebook:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Podcast/Tangential-Inspiration-110449931124565/Twitter: https://twitter.com/TangentialInsp1

In this episode, we discuss the recently released Netflix documentary Pray Away, which tells the stories of ex-leaders (all of whom are queer) of the conversion therapy movement; they speak out about its harm to the LGBTQ+ community and its devastating persistence in the modern day through new movements like Freedom March. We discuss the stories that touched our hearts (particularly Julie Rodgers'), the unfortunate lack of diversity of voices, and how we feel about the choice of the filmmakers to feature the story of a current leader in the ex-gay movement who still supports the message (Jeffrey McCall of Freedom March). Outlove: A Queer Christian Survival Story, written by Julie Rodgers was published in 2021 by Broadleaf Books Publishing Inc. In this honest and vulnerable book, Rodgers takes us through her journey from ex-gay theology to radical inclusion and self-acceptance as a queer Christian. After decades of bouncing between hope and despair, Evangelical, Baptist-raised Julie Rodgers found herself making a powerful public statement that her former self would have never said: "I support same-sex marriage in the church." When Rodgers came out to her family as a junior in high school, she still believed that God would sanctify her and eventually make her straight. Wanting so intensely to be good, she spent her adolescent and early adult years with an ex-gay ministry, praying for liberation from her homosexuality. In Outlove Rodgers details her deeply personal journey from a life of self-denial in the name of faith to her role in leading the take-down of Exodus International, the largest ex-gay organization in the world, to her marriage to a woman at the Washington National Cathedral. Through one woman's intimate story, we see the larger story of why many have left conservative religious structures in order to claim their truest identity. Outlove is about love and losses, political and religious power-plays, and the cost to those who sought to stay in a faith community that wouldn't accept them. Shedding light on the debate between Evangelical Christians and the LGBTQ community--a battle that continues to rage on in the national news and in courtrooms across the country--this book ultimately casts a hopeful vision for how the church can heal. When Rodgers came out to her family as a junior in high school, she still believed that God would sanctify her and eventually make her straight. Julie Rodgers was raised in a conservative evangelical home, so she knew they’d be horrified when she came out as a lesbian in her teens. To please her family and community, she first tried to change who she was, then she tried to deny it. We talk about how she went from being a star on the “ex-gay” speaker circuit to believing that God delights in all aspects of LGBTQ people, including their sexuality. _Note: This episode was recorded before Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced his retirement, and before an armed man slaughtered five journalists at the Annapolis Capitol Gazette._ We're one week away from taking a break for much of the summer--but we're starting up an Impolite Company newsletter to fill the void, and we'll drop in occasionally with a few mini episodes. In the meantime, this week's show features Amy in conversation with two women who are leading figures in the area of religion and politics.  First up is Rachel Laser, a legal expert who heads up Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. She walks us through the Masterpiece Cake decision and talks about how religious liberty is currently being interpreted in our culture and our courts. Then Amy talks with Julie Rodgers, a popular writer and speaker who made national news a few years ago when she was hired--and then quickly fired--by Wheaton as the school's first and only chaplain to LGBT students.
