In this episode, Dr. Clark continues the Heidelcast series on Romans, beginning with a look at the "New Perspective on Paul" (NPP) and the question of Jews and Gentiles in the early church. Dr. Clark breaks down how the NPP affects Reformed theology and how to consider it critically, with critiques from Michael Horton and Charles E. Hill. He answers texts from John about images of Christ and from Josh about the practice of laying on of hands in ordination. He answers emails from Brandon about singing non-inspired songs in private or family worship; from  Susan saying thanks for the recent episode on Getting the Gospel Right; from Jason making the sign of the cross; from Anonymous about the relationship between the Adamic, Noah, Abrahamic, Mosaic, and Davidic covenants; and from Robert about a partial quotation from Herman Bavinck on distinguishing law and gospel. Did Bavinck reject the law/gospel distinction. See the resources below for more on these topics. The opening audio is from Brad Isbell and Luke Gossett on the Presbycast. This episode of the Heidelcast is sponsored by Westminster Seminary California. The need for well-trained ministers and laity is greater now than at any time since the Reformation. Doctrinal confusion abounds. Educational standards are slipping. So the work of Westminster Seminary California has never been more important. We need pastors and leaders in the church who really know the Word, who can really read the original languages competently, who can preach the law and the gospel faithfully, who can shepherd the flock graciously, and who can reach the lost boldly. Does this sound like something to which you feel called? There's no better way to find out than to visit WSC in person! Come to Seminary For A Day, March 10, 2023. You will be able to sit in on classes, meet students and professors, see the campus and student housing, and have all your questions answered in-person by those best equipped to help you on your seminary journey! Westminster Seminary California offers masters degrees in biblical studies, systematics (theology), and historical theology, as well as the Master of Divinity. Join Pastor Bryan Wolfmueller, Joshua Sherman (Tending Our Nets) and myself as we discuss Law and Gospel from the Lutheran perspective! In this episode we break the title up into two parts: Law & Gospel. In the first half, we seek to understand exactly what the New Testament author's mean when they use phrases like "the Law", "the Law of Moses", "the Law of Christ", ect.; how the Law applied to Israelite's under the Old Covenant and how it applies to Christians under the New Covenant today; and finally different uses of the Law for believers and unbelievers in Jesus Christ alike! Then, in the second half, after seeing our need for a Savior because the Law exposes the fact we are sinners, we dive into what exactly "The Gospel" is by examining promises found in the Old Testament as well as the New Testament for follower's of Jesus Christ! We also examine the Greek word "πίστις" (pistis - "faith/trust") as we learn what it really means to "believe in Jesus"! We also get into issues like the New Perspective on Paul, Karl Barth's arguments and Lutheran answers to his ideology, as well as a whole host of side topics you would expect when you sit a #Lutheran, #Calvinist and #Non-Calvinist down on a CSG episode!!! Had a blast with Pr. Bryan as well as Josh Sherman and cannot wait for Episode #3!!! Scholars such as James Dunn and N.T. Wright have argued that both Old and New Testament saints were members of one and the same covenant and that believers are justified on the basis of their faithfulness to that covenant. But is this what the Apostle Paul really taught? Shane Rosenthal discusses this important issue with T. David Gordon, author of Promise, Law, Faith: Covenant-Historical Reasoning in Galatians. –––––––––––––––––––––– Become a partner and you will receive all of the White Horse Inn extended episodes. We know to read Scripture through its contextual lens... but we often don't realize the Lutheran-Reformed framework that alters our understanding. What if we aimed to understand Paul on his own terms? What if returning to ancient texts brings a fresher, more balanced perspective? In today's episode, Aaron joins Jason Myers, author and professor of Biblical Studies at Greensboro College, to encourage us to stretch and expand our perspective on Paul's teachings by going back to the basics. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/everydaytheology/support

00:00 - Introduction 07:05 - Free-for-All (Favorite part of Lent) 16:34 - Main Topic (The New Perspective on Paul) In episode ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE Wade and Mike welcome guest Rev. Daniel Waldschmidt of St. John’s Lutheran in Burlington, WI in order to discuss the New Perspective on Paul. Rev. Waldschmidt patiently explains to the guys what this new view of St. Paul entails. While this topic is complicated, Rev. Waldschmidt does a nice job of explaining the basics of this view and how it doesn’t match up with the traditional Reformation reading of St. Paul and his epistles. Rev. Waldschmidt is certainly qualified to speak on this topic having studied it during his Masters work at Trinity International University’s Divinity School and having presented an essay on the topic at Wisconsin in Lutheran Seminary. February 5, 2020 PM, Galatians.Tonight we review several popular tenants of the new perspective on the Apostle Paul: 1) An agenda to provide a clearer understanding of first century Judaism. 2) Attempts to convince Paul's doctrine of justification not to represent a sinner being justified in God's sight, but rather reflecting Jewish exclusivity, meaning that they were trying to keep Gentiles separate from this community. 3) Demands a more restrictive definition of what the works of the law mean. 4) Perseverance of the saints, teaching that faithfulness to the law is a means of identifying oneself as a part of the covenant Jewish community.

Dr. Robert J. Cara speaks about his book, Cracking the Foundation of the New Perspective on Paul: Covenantal Nomism versus Reformed Covenantal Theology (Mentor, 2017), which is published in the Reformed Exegetical and Doctrinal Series. The New Perspective on Paul is broadly united on its view of Second Temple Jewish literature. Arguing that these documents do not contain a doctrine of works righteousness, Paul certainly cannot be arguing against such a view—quite simply because it didn't exist. Dr. Cara examines the Jewish sources and "cracks the foundation" of the NPP by demonstrating how they incorporate meritorious works and thus establishing the traditional Protestant view of Paul and his doctrine of justification.

The study of Paul-s letters has been greatly impacted by new understandings of Judaism in the first century, known as the New Perspective on Paul. Paul-s theology, his explanations of grace, covenant, and righteousness have been discussed in light of these new interpretations of Second Temple Judaism- however, less attention has been paid to how this new way of viewing the Judaism of Paul-s day impacts our interpretation of Paul-s call to discipleship. We will be diving into Ephesians 2-11-14 and 5-1-5 as they provide fertile soil to explore Paul-s charge to his congregation in light of new understandings of first century Judaism.

We give a brief report of our experience at the Evangelical Theological Society conference in Baltimore last week, where we had dozens of great interactions with the attendees there. While there, I found a couple of very helpful books which explain what the New Perspective on Paul is all about. Then we get back into our study of Romans 3-5. In the previous session we looked at the bad news of all mankind (both Jew and Gentile) being under condemnation. This time we focus on the good news of justification by grace through faith in Christ for both Jew and Gentile. One of the benefits of that justification was the HOPE of seeing the Glory of God revealed to them at the Parousia. We note also that the idea of a collective body being resurrected out of covenantally dead Judaism does not seem to be involved (or even mentioned) here in the first five chapters of Romans, suggesting that it is probably not found in chapters 6-11 either. The first three chapters of Romans lock up all humanity, including the Jews, under condemnation. That is very bad news for everyone, especially for the Jews who considered themselves as automatically saved. Before Paul gives them the good news, he unloads this bad news on them first. How was "ALL ISRAEL" saved at the Parousia in AD 70? How did the Roman church fit into that plan to save ALL ISRAEL? How do the Collective Body and Individual Body views differ in their explanations of this SALVATION of All Israel? What is the "New Perspective on Paul"?
