PART 2 of 4: Many Christians wonder how it is possible to be LGBTQ+ affirming in light of what most people assume to be a clear anti-Gay message in the bible. This episode continues this exploration by taking on the story of Sodom, and investigating what are the "abominations" in the laws of Leviticus. In this special 4-part series, Kelly examines how affirming Bible scholars view the 6 verses in the Bible that deal with same-sex relationships in the context of their time and place, and ask whether these really are sweeping prohibitions of all same-sex relationships, or are about specific issues in a certain time--including violence, idolatry, and religious difference--that may not apply to modern LGBTQ+ people and relationships. It's election time in the UK and USA, that magical season when people of conscience and intelligence are told to hold their noses, ignore the stink of corruption and compromise, and vote for one of two parties that are both pro-capitalist, tough on those fleeing danger, and, this year, apparently okay with genocide. Meeerrrry shitmas! To 'celebrate' the season, we decided to talk politics, parties, key issues on people's minds and why people think voting for evil is okay, just because it's 'lesser'. Bella Cross is a community organiser and activist whose day job involves educating younger people to understand politics better. They are also a Christian, trans, nonbinary, deeply insightful and a lot of fun. They join Malky, Laura and Jonty to talk about trans rights, Palestine, the environment, asylum and migration and why voting is not the most important part of politics. We also end up speaking about giving blood, passing out and Scottish football more than you might expect. This is a pretty UK-focused episode, but the themes we're discussing will, we think, be relevant to anyone disheartened with their political choices. About Beer Christianity Beer Christianity is an anti-capitalist, pro-BLM, pro-LGBTQ+, anti-imperialist, post-post-post-evangelical podcast where we drink a bit and talk a lot. Our aim is to be real, helpful and entertaining. Beer Christianity also has a newsletter in which Jonty and guest authors comment on the news, theological issues and stuff that matters. He updates it according to his own wildly inconsistent neurodivergent schedule, but it's a good read. Sign up for the Beer Christianity newsletter on Substack. Jonty's novel, Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird, is not literature but it's quite fun if you like Supernatural, Africa or the Goth scene. Laura doesn't want us to post her BookTok until she's posted more videos. She may have prayed for the app to be banned just to avoid it. Beliefs… We don't really want to preach at you, but some people like to know what we believe. It's this: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came to teach us a better way to be, while reconciling us to God and each other in a way we could never do without Him. He also changed water into wine. Nice.
In an inspiring new episode of 'The Queer Quest Podcast,' we sit down with Mike Maeshiro, a visionary gay Christian pastor and life coach dedicated to guiding queer and deconstructing Christians through their spiritual and personal journeys.
Hello my friendsA few words at the top here before the episode starts. I had to rearrange some interviews I had lined up for this week — so I'm pulling a great conversation out of the archive for you. Given that last weekend was Mardi Gras, I thought I'd replay this wonderful panel conversation we recorded just over a year ago in conjunction with World Pride. It was a great chat with Karl, Karen and Tash — certainly worth listening to either for the first time or to catch something new on a second listen. I also wanted to take a moment here to highlight the Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimages which have been happening during Lent. The circumstances in Gaza continue to be horrendous. I'm sure so many of you, like me, feel at a loss for words and for the right actions. If you haven't already heard of the Gaza Ceasefire Pilgrimage this has become a worldwide movement of Christian groups hosting 41km walks — the length of Gaza — as an act of solidarity as well as a nonviolent protest, calling for a permanent ceasefire. These walks are hosted by Christians, welcoming of people from all or no faith background, and are built around strong core convictions, including condemning anti-semitism, which is not the same thing as critiquing the Israeli government. At Meeting Ground church, we will be doing 4 10km walks during Holy Week, starting on Palm Sunday. As we prepare to reflect on the crucified Christ at Easter, I cannot think of a more pertinent time to try to connect our bodies, minds and hearts with those who are unjustly crucified, scapegoated and oppressed — in our world today. If you happen to be on the Central Coast and you want to join us reach out. Otherwise, check out gazaceasefirepilgrimage.com to learn more and connect with groups and organisers in your neck of the woods. I know many listeners will have already participated in pilgrimages in recent weeks, and if that's the case, big respect to you and your crew. Where ever you find yourself this week may you turn your ears and your voice and your being in the direction of love that perseveres. The idea of "sin" has been weaponized, especially against marginalized folks. We've brought our colleague, friend, and brilliant theologian The Rev. Dr. Patrick Cheng to speak with us on sin, and why we're not giving up on the idea of sin even as liberated Christians. Father Patrick is a prolific writer, thinker, and leader in the church; in this episode, we're talking especially about his book, From Sin to amazing Grace: Discovering the Queer Christ. Meet your hosts, The Rev. Laura Di Panfilo and The Rev. Lizzie McManus-Dail -- whom you might have seen while scrolling on TikTok or Instagram doing silly dances and talking about the life-giving love of God. Neither one of us grew up Episcopalian and yet both of us have found a home in this faith after walking away from traditions that did not always speak life over us. It turns out it isn't that ironic to be a priest and be a deconstructing Christian! We're always learning and decolonizing and dismantling systems of oppression ... just in the name of Jesus. And, we know how disorienting it can be for people who are new to liturgical Christianity or who have never known there was another, faith-full way to follow Christ. Enter: And Also with You! I know you've heard them. Those simple phrases that people throw out anytime someone is hurting or in need. Phrases like, "I'll pray for you," or maybe, "just give it to God," or perhaps, "you just have to have more faith." Now, although as a Christian myself, I don't agree with any of those statements in theory, I do disagree as to how they are most often shared. Someone in the church is vulnarable enough, which is risky in itself, to share a struggle, hurt, or need, and then they get these old cliches thrown back at them. Truthfully, when one is going through the pain of trauma, yes, people of faith need God; however, they also need to deal with their bodies, and their hurting minds. Can God heal instantly? As a man of faith, I would say, "yes." But, as a man who has walked the walk and be in the faith most of my life, that isn't the way I have most often seen healing occur, especially traumatic healing. So, that's what I want to talk about today on the podcast. In this episode, I want to share my 4 S's from the lament prayer found in Psalm 31:1-5 (the actual psalm and prayer continues beyond but that will be our focus for this episode). In it, the author, most often tradionaly considered to be David, shares a bit about his struggle but also his genuine faith in God. Now, know that I believe in taking action to help ourselves. I believe in positive action, learning, striving, proceedures, and goals to heal and create great lives. But, I would be remiss as a follower of Jesus, if I didn't also believe that God has a role in our lives, our healing, and our future. So, let's take a quick peek at the first of the prayer and see how it could encourage us. I know that any of us who are part of the LGBTQ+ community suffer abuse from others, especially those from within the church; however, I am also convinced that much of the abuse we experience comes from ourselves. Many of us suck at experiencing self-love. Either we don't know how to do it. Perhaps we don't know what it even looks like or should look like. I get it. I have struggled with that at times myself. But, I know that without it, we can never become the person God created us to be. We can never succeed in life the way that we want. We can never attract to us the positive people and things we desire if we continue to practice self-abuse rather than self-love. So, let's talk about it a little today and allow me to suggest one little technique that I have used, as well as my clients, to begin flipping the switch toward more self-love. You might have expected that we would have been back in the book of Acts but nope, I decided to take at least one more week away from it. Today, in this Bible Talks episode of Coffee with Keith, I am going to be sharing some thoughts on responding to suffering. The text that inspired this is 1 Peter 2:19-25. The text is contextually about submitting to authority and concludes with a reference to the sheep and shepherd; however, I was drawn to the lesson about suffering. With that in mind and as inspiration, I wanted to give you 4 things I consider when dealing with my suffering in hopes they might help you. On Episode 164 of the Coffee with Keith Podcast, I talked about the "yes" of people pleasing. That has been a pretty popular episode so I do encourage you to go listen tot that one if you haven't yet. In it, I mentioned that I was a recovering people pleaser and had come alone way in my work when it came to such. But, have a little time to reflect on the episode, which I am still happy with, I did realize that there was a caution that I thought I should at least mention. Now, I don't think it is something that most of us will be guilty of, but for completeness of thought and idea, I thought it wise to at least mention it. If nothing else, I hope this episode will give you fuel for thought as you move forward as the author of your story. Born out of Director Sharon Lewis's own muted struggle with not fitting into neat racial/Queer/Christian boxes, With Wonder takes an intimate look at the journey of members of the Queer, Christian community of colour and their attempts to answer the question: Can you be both Christian and Queer? This feature length documentary, features the diverse stories of several members of the LGBTQI+ community, including high profile queer activists and Queer clerics, in places like Jamaica, New York, London, and Los Angeles. They each have their own unique ways of amplifying their voices and finding their way back to spiritual health, despite the shaming tactics of some Christian institutions. With Wonder is a love letter to God from the LGBTQI+ community of colour. Heartfelt and honest, With Wonder delves into what for some might be uncomfortable conversations. In this episode, I sit down with Courtney Panchan, Distribution Manager of Black Market Releasing (the film company releasing With Wonder) to talk about how the QPOC people in the film came to terms and come out the other side, living their truth with the power of who they are and still serving God and how they can champion youth across Canada & the US who are looking to be accepted for their truth.

I get it. You have been hurt so often by those within the church because of your sexual identity. What's more, for many of you, having grown up in the church, you have been taught to believe that you identity makes you a bad person, especially in the eyes of God. Thus...shame. Well, we need to boot shame to the curve. In fact, the more light we bring to our shame, the more healing we bring to our life. Therefore, I want to simply suggest 5 general steps to begin the healing of our shame as a queer Christian. Please understand that the real work takes more effort and input, but at least this gives you a place to begin and information to think through. In this week's Bible Talks episode, we are back in the book of Acts and on to Acts 12. Now, to be honest, I had intentions to over the entire chapter in this episode. But...I got to a part of the text and it just resonated with me and I sorta got on my soapbox and spent some time speaking from my heart about what I see in this text, what I have seen dipicted in the pages of history, and now...am seeing daily in my life and the life of others. So, for that reason, I camped on that idea for this entire episode and will venture forth in the next. Are you ready to get serious? "Do I have to come out to every one? " This is a question that I have gotten many times over my 30 plus year career. The answer is: yes and no. Well, that is as clear as mud. The truth is, people approach this idea with different ideas, different desires, and different mentalities. So, I think it must have a "depends" answer. In today's episode, I talk about both sides of the coin and give you an analogy that sorta drives home the point. Okay, my friend, today I am drifting away from the book of Acts to address a subject and a verse that I often hear people misusing, but for a good reason. The verse is Matthew 18:19. I bet if you have been raised in church, you will recognize this verse and probably recognized the way Christians have often used it. Well, that "Rip and Run," Bible interpretation doesn't fly and this is a prime example why. Give this one a listen and then go to your Bible as read the entire chapter 18 found in the Gospel of Matthews. But for now...go grab your coffee, have seat at my table, and let's chat on this episode of Coffee with Keith.Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional nor am I a licensed therapist. I have often had people ask me: "Keith, why would an older bisexual or pansexual person, especially one is currently in a straight-presenting relationship, want to come out." Well, although there are many reasons, and those reasons can vary from person to person, I do believe that there are some common reasons I have heard throughout my career. In this episode, I want to share 5. Warning: Keith gets on his soap box today. It's true, I do get a little wound up on this Bible Talks episode of Coffee with Keith. In this episode, we look at Acts 10. In it, we see the dream of Cornelius to summon Peter and we see the vision of Peter about the animals and the sheet. So, how and why do these align. What's more, what could this have to do with the Queer Christian? Well, I think much in both. So, if you are ready to dive into this chapter with me, let's do it.Grab your coffee, have seat at my table, and let's chat on this episode of Coffee with Keith.Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional nor am I a licensed therapist. In this episode, I share a very vulnerable insight into my journey to reconciling my faith and sexuality. I also announce a new service for the Queer Christian community.
I know...the holidays can be ruff for those of use within the LGBTQ+ community. For far too many of us, our families are filled with unapproving, and often condemning people. Some of you may have even been completely rejected by your family. It sux. But, I also know many of your haven't experienced complete disowning by your family, but the tension is still high. This is especially true for my Queer Christian family who have non-affirming evangelical family members as well. So, what do we do? As loving as I can, in this podcast, I suggest 4 questions you should truly ask yourself before you make your decisions and plans. I think it is wise to think these through and I hope they will be of a blessing to you. Hold you head up. Be strong. I know, it's not easy being queer during Christmas. But, you aren't alone. Today is a solo episode of the Coffee with Keith podcast. In this Table Talks episode, I want to share with you about the 4 historical views of the Lord's Supper and why understanding which one you believe should matter to you as a queer Christian. I believe that regardless of which view you hold (but I think you should hold one), there is personal healing and blessing that comes from the celebration. That comes from a man who is an ordained priest and a bisexual man. This week, our sermon series continues with a resurrection story from a queer christian perspective, inspired by the baptism narrative in Luke. Sunday, May 29, 2022 Sermon audio: Sermon video: The post Cwow from A Queer Christian Perspective appeared first on Church Without Walls.
On this LGBTQ Podcast, Dr. Melodie Roschman discusses her dissertation, "Identity, Counternarrative, and Community in Progressive Christian Women's Memoir," with Kendra Arsenault on this episode of Imago Gei, affirming Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Queer identities in religious spaces. When we think about testimony in Scripture, eye-witness accounts, what a person heard or saw, life stories like Ruth and Esther, the testimony of John in Revelation, or the visions of Isaiah and Daniel, personal experience with the world and with God matter. So what is the place of personal story and memoir when building a reflective theology? How do we include the proverbial Yelp Review of certain Christian disciplines or traditions and use it to inform our present beliefs and practices? What's the role of feedback and should it be taken into consideration when building a belief about God?
Look, I know it's hard when you are LGBTQIA+ and Christian. Conservative Christians come out of the woodwork to attack you. I get it. I have heard it all my life. The truth is, it is quite tempting to walk away from the faith of one's childhood. But, I want to invite you to reconsider.I want to invite you to rethink it rather than reject it. And in today's podcast, I am going to give you 5 simple things to do to keep your faith. It won't be easy, I know. But, I think it is worth it. My thoughts today actually originate from the Biblical study of Palm Sunday. I know...weird right? But just give it a listen and you might get the connection. You know it. You hear it. The moment you tell someone that you are queer AND Christian, they flip out. "You can't be. No such thing," is often what I hear. Sorry, Karen...but there is such a thing. You can be Christian and queer. In fact, I think those within the community have a beautiful perspective to bring to the faith and service. But, let's be real...the judgement won't stop anytime soon. But, take comfort that this kind of stuff isn't new. Today, I want to share the reading from John 12: 1-8. Take a peek into the action at the house of Lazarus when Jesus pays a visit. I think you will find it interesting as we reflect from a queer perspective. So, grab a coffee, have a seat and my coffee table, and let's chat on this edition of "Coffee with Keith." If you were raised in the church or spent much time in church, you probably heard the story of the prodigal son in Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 . In it, Jesus tells a parable about a father and his two sons. Although the story is just that...as story...the lessons that can be derived from it are, I think...impactful. I wanted to take this story that Jesus told and try to share some ideas from it aimed at my beautiful, but perhaps, hurting and struggling LGBTQ+ family. So, in this episode I am going to use the word, "DRIFT," as an acrostic for 5 thoughts I want to offer as encouragement and support. So...if you are game, plug in your ear buds and let's talk Luke 15 on this episode of "Coffee with Keith."To connect with me:To connect with me on Instagram, visit here.Rainbow Champions (Membership Group)Church Trauma Package (1-1, 6-week coaching for LGBTQ+)Coaching for the Parent of a LGBTQ+ Child of any ageBoundary Setting 101: Single Coaching SessionBrand New Digital Course (low intro price) Boundary Setting 101Support the show with a $5 gift.To visit my website and get all my freebies, visit here.Visit www.jkeithbrown.com and look at the top of the landing page to grab your FREE copy of this .pdf worksheet. Kendra Arsenault, Spectrum Magazine and SDA Kinship have come together to bring you the premiere episode of Imago Gei where we share the latest on queer theology, stories, and a minority perspective on faith. Today, we are easing ourselves in the conversation by posing the question: Is It Safe? LGBTQ church members are often faced with the challenging question: do I disclose my queer identity in a hostile environment or do I stay closeted until a later day when/if I feel safe? Safe spaces, safe churches, and safe people are the focus of today's topic as we learn what it means to approach difficult topics with self-energy and learn the effects of hostile church environments on the mental health of queer members.
This week's guest is Jon Carl Lewis (he/him), who is a spiritual director and writer focusing on the intersection between spirituality and sexuality for queer folks. Lewis shares about his childhood and adolescence, and what it was like for him to discover his gay identity and then later come out amidst the AIDS pandemic of the 1980's. He goes on to share about how his Second Adolescence involved completing developmental tasks missed out on from his first adolescence, and how maintaining and redefining a relationship with Christianity that invites more space for queerness has been integral to his path and to the work he now does in the world. About the guest:Jon Carl Lewis (he/him) is a 56-year-old, Gay Christian living with his husband of 26 years in Trenton, NJ. A lifelong Christian and undeniably gay—he has wrestled for over forty years with the question of integrating his sexuality and spirituality. Although raised in the Black church, a flirtation with fundamentalism landed him in conversion therapy—which didn't work. Deciding to choose life rather than the living death fundamentalism prescribed, he joined the Episcopal Church, where he worshiped for almost 30 years. After a period of deconstruction, he reconstructed his approach to Christianity from a more contemplative perspective and became a spiritual director. He now worships in a radically inclusive and LGBTQ-celebrating Methodist congregation where he has been asked to preach. He is a graduate of Princeton University and has been trained to think theologically and biblically at Princeton Theological Seminary, Harvard Divinity School, and the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church. In October 2020, he launched the Sex & the Gay Christian website (at sexgaychristian.com) as a place to provide resources and gather community to support Queer men seeking to live integrated sexual lives. Outlove: A Queer Christian Survival Story, written by Julie Rodgers was published in 2021 by Broadleaf Books Publishing Inc. In this honest and vulnerable book, Rodgers takes us through her journey from ex-gay theology to radical inclusion and self-acceptance as a queer Christian. After decades of bouncing between hope and despair, Evangelical, Baptist-raised Julie Rodgers found herself making a powerful public statement that her former self would have never said: "I support same-sex marriage in the church." When Rodgers came out to her family as a junior in high school, she still believed that God would sanctify her and eventually make her straight. Wanting so intensely to be good, she spent her adolescent and early adult years with an ex-gay ministry, praying for liberation from her homosexuality. In Outlove Rodgers details her deeply personal journey from a life of self-denial in the name of faith to her role in leading the take-down of Exodus International, the largest ex-gay organization in the world, to her marriage to a woman at the Washington National Cathedral. Through one woman's intimate story, we see the larger story of why many have left conservative religious structures in order to claim their truest identity. Outlove is about love and losses, political and religious power-plays, and the cost to those who sought to stay in a faith community that wouldn't accept them. Shedding light on the debate between Evangelical Christians and the LGBTQ community--a battle that continues to rage on in the national news and in courtrooms across the country--this book ultimately casts a hopeful vision for how the church can heal. Meg Gambino is an artist and activist currently working as the Director of Outreach for an addiction recovery center. Her life mission is to creatively empower others by modeling reconciliation between communities of people and people on the margins. Find her work at reconfigureart.com.
