Gaza suffers as children and aid workers killed in Israeli bombardment "Tragedy deepens in Gaza as at least 322 children have been killed and 609 wounded in the past 10 days, UNICEF reports, after Israel resumed attacks. ""Children have again been plunged into deadly violence,"" warns UNICEF's Catherine Russell. Separately, Gaza's media office confirms 1,513 humanitarian workers killed in Israel's relentless bombardment. Meanwhile, The Palestinian presidency condemns forced evacuations in Rafah, calling them a violation of international law. Israel and Hamas remain at odds over key conditions, including prisoner releases and military withdrawal." French court bans Marine Le Pen from office over EU funds scandal "French political circles are in turmoil. Marine Le Pen's electoral ambitions face a stunning blow as a court imposes a five-year ban after she was found guilty of embezzling European Union funds. International figures, including US President Donald Trump and his billionaire supporter Elon Musk, decry the ruling as politically motivated. Le Pen vows to appeal, insisting she's ""eliminated,"" not defeated. Her National Rally party now weighs its options, with 29-year-old protege and the party leader Jordan Bardella potentially stepping into the spotlight." Myanmar declares national mourning as earthquake deaths surpass 2,000 "Myanmar declared a week of national mourning on Monday following a devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that claimed over 2,000 lives. The ruling junta announced flags would fly at half-mast until April 6 in honour of the victims. Rescue efforts have slowed in Mandalay, the worst-hit city, as fears of aftershocks persist. Thousands are still living on the streets, and with communication networks disrupted, the true scale of the disaster remains uncertain. At least 3,900 people are injured, and hundreds are still missing." Khamenei warns Trump that Iran will retaliate firmly against aggression "Iran's Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, responded sharply to US President Donald Trump's threat of ""bombing,"" warning that any external aggression would prompt a ""firm retaliatory blow."" Addressing a congregation in Tehran, Khamenei emphasised Iran's readiness for any confrontation. Meanwhile, Iran rejected direct talks with the US but remains open to indirect negotiations. Iran's Foreign Ministry condemned Trump's remarks as a “shocking affront to international peace.”" France fines Apple over its app tracking transparency practices "French antitrust authorities have slapped Apple with a $162 million fine over its App Tracking Transparency or ATT feature. The watchdog argued that the implementation of ATT was excessive and harmed third-party publishers. The system, which debuted in 2021, requires users to opt-in before tracking across apps, with critics accusing Apple of using it to promote its own advertising. Despite the fine, Apple maintained the feature gives users greater control over privacy and has strong support globally. Investigations are ongoing in several European countries."

John talked about coming up in the jazz and music world and hanging (and playing) with legends like Benny Goodman, Les Paul, Joe Venuti, Zoot Sims, Slam Stewart, Clark Terry, George Shearing, and of course, his father Bucky. Plus, John shared some stories about working with pop icons James Taylor and Paul McCartney.

UN says 17,000+ children without their families in Gaza Israel's genocidal war in Gaza has seen children killed, starved, frozen to death, orphaned and separated from their families, the UN humanitarian chief has said. At a UN Security Council meeting, the humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher said that ""a generation has been traumatised." "Conservative estimates indicate that over 17,000 children are without their families in Gaza," he said. Report reveals Google's secret AI support for Israel amid war on Gaza "Google has continued providing AI technologies to Israel's military-industrial complex despite public attempts to distance itself from the country's violent aggressions, according to a report by the Washington Post. According to the newspaper's investigation, Google has been supporting Israel's Defence Ministry and military with artificial intelligence tools since the onset of its attacks on Gaza on October 7, 2023, even as its employees protested the Nimbus cloud computing contract. The company documents reveal Google expedited access to its Vertex AI service for the Israeli Defence Ministry. Internal communications show Google employees were concerned about losing potential contracts to competitors like Amazon if they did not quickly provide AI technology access." Dozens of diplomats, officials ousted in sweeping reset at State Department "In a swift and sweeping move, the Trump administration has directed dozens of senior State Department officials to step aside, triggering one of the most extensive leadership shake-ups in recent history, according to US media. Career diplomats and political appointees alike, including some in top roles overseeing US foreign policy, have been reportedly instructed to vacate their positions in recent days as President Donald Trump's team accelerates its plans to realign the Department with the administration's vision. This dramatic overhaul, which includes the departure of key figures such as John Bass and Geoff Pyatt, has sent shockwaves through Foggy Bottom." M23 rebels battling DRC army approach Goma city after seizing Sake town "Panic has spread in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo's main city, with M23 rebels steadily inching closer to Goma and seizing a nearby town as they battle the Congolese army. Bombs were heard going off in the city's distant outskirts and hundreds of wounded civilians were brought in to the main hospital from the area of the fighting. The rebel group has pushed significantly in recent weeks, closing in on Goma, which has around 2 million people and is a regional hub for security and humanitarian efforts." Climate shocks disrupted schooling for 242M children in 2024 — UN "Extreme weather disrupted the schooling of about 242 million children in 85 countries last year — roughly one in seven students, the UN children's agency has reported. It deplored what it said was an ""overlooked"" aspect of the climate crisis. Heat waves had the biggest impact, the report showed, as UNICEF's executive director Catherine Russell warned children are ""more vulnerable"" to extreme weather."

Matt Munisteri: I had to steal a guitar back from airport employees who were stealing it from me, and I had to do that by sneaking out on the tarmac through a back door. It was just pre 9/11, coming back from a gig in Portugal. 9/11 really changed things. Prior to that, guitars really would disappear. I know Frizzell lost guitars, at least one. I know Brian Setzer lost guitars. In the 90s, things were sort of vanishing, so this was in early 2000 or late 99, I can't remember. But yeah, these airport employees kept telling me that it wasn't there. And finally I peeked through a window and the guy was telling me it wasn't there and telling me to go home at whatever, 2, 3 in the morning.I looked and my guitar was right next to him. So I waited until I watched him walk away. And then I slid under a garage door that led out to the tarmac from the luggage area, from the luggage carousels. I stole my guitar back.George Cole: Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Hot Jazz Network Podcast. I'm your host, George Cole, and today we have a very special guest. One of the most important guitar players working in the United States today, the one and only Matt Munisteri. He plays guitar for Catherine Russell, he's an expert on all things vintage jazz and he also plays the banjo. Matt comes out of Brooklyn, New York City, and we are going to speak to him right now.

FIFTEEN MINUTE FILM FANATICS

When Mike casually remarked to Dan that he had just re-watched Ball of Fire, the 1941 Barbara Stanwyck / Gary Cooper screwball comedy co-written by Billy Wilder and directed by Howard Hawks, Dan replied that he had “always wanted to, but never gotten around to seeing it.” Mike made demands, Dan pressed play, and here's their conversation about what it's like when a friend takes one of your film recommendations and wholly enjoys it. They also talk about the ways in which dancing, slang, and falling in love are messier than entries in an encyclopedia—wonderfully so. Mike even compares this film to one by John Carpenter—and he's 100% correct. So stop worrying about the quest for knowledge and learn how to cha-cha! Dan has interviewed Catherine Russell on New Books in Film about her new book, The Cinema of Barbara Stanwyck. You can also find a collection of interviews with Howard Hawks here and Todd McCarthy's 2007 biography of Hawks here. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3279340/advertisement

From The Lady Eve, to The Big Valley, Barbara Stanwyck played parts that showcased her multidimensional talents but also illustrated the limits imposed on women in film and television. Catherine Russell's A to Z consideration of the iconic actress analyzes twenty-six facets of Stanwyck and the America of her times. Russell examines Stanwyck's work onscreen against the backdrop of costuming and other aspects of filmmaking. But she also views the actress's off-screen performance within the Hollywood networks that made her an industry favorite and longtime cornerstone of the entertainment community. Russell's montage approach coalesces into an engrossing portrait of a singular artist whose intelligence and savvy placed her center-stage in the production of her films and in the debates around women, femininity, and motherhood that roiled mid-century America. Original and rich, The Cinema of Barbara Stanwyck: Twenty-Six Short Essays on a Working Star (U Illinois Press, 2023) is an essential and entertaining reexamination of an enduring Hollywood star.
