Joni Mitchell's rich, colorful altered-tuning chord voicings have set her work apart in its own musical universe, where the rest of us guitarists either scratch our heads in wonder or have to do dissertation-level research to unpack just how she gets her sound. Dawes guitarist and songwriter Taylor Goldsmith gained firsthand experience with Mitchell's songs when he joined her on stage—just check out 2022's “Joni Jam” from the Newport Folk Festival, which also included Brandi Carlile, Blake Mills, Jon Batiste, and others.Goldsmith joins us on this episode of the 100 Guitarists podcast. Together, we talk about Mitchell's chord voicings and progressions, her tunings, what it's like to share a stage with her, and Goldsmith wonders: Was Bob Dylan's “Tangled Up in Blue” a nod to the songwriter's 1971 album? When we wrap up our conversation, we cover a new release of energetic, forward-leaning guitar cumbia by Los Pirañas and an album of Bach Partitas for Telecaster by guitarist Noel Johnston.Check out the L.R. I hope you've been enjoying the last few weeks of the Talkhouse feed as we've been throwing some new shows your way. If you haven't checked out Summer Album/Winter Album yet, please do, and look out for new episodes of Nobody's Ever Asked Me That, featuring my esteemed colleague Nick Dawson, in the coming months, too. Today's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast features a pair of incredible songwriters in a lovely chat about the thing they love to do the most: make music. We've got Benmont Tench and Taylor Goldsmith. Tench, in case you don't recognize the name, is a founding member of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and a guy who helped shape rock music for decades with the distinctive sound and feel of his piano, organ, and much more. Tench made music with Petty from the time they were 11 years old until Petty's death in 2017, but he's also contributed to songs and albums by a dizzying array of other artists, too, from Roy Orbison to Fiona Apple to U2. As you'll hear in this conversation, Tench is always playing music because he loves it so damn much. He recently released his second-ever solo album, The Melancholy Season, and it includes some playing from his friend Taylor Goldsmith. Check out the title track from The Melancholy Season right here. Goldsmith is best known as the singer of the band Dawes, whose Laurel Canyon-inspired folk-rock has been caressing our ears for the past 15 years or so. Dawes has gone through some personnel changes in the past couple of years, paring back to Goldsmith and his brother Griffin and releasing a new album, the fittingly titled Oh Brother just last year. Both Goldsmith brothers were hit hard by the Los Angeles fires, losing their homes and the majority of their beloved instruments. But Goldsmith, as you'll hear, is taking it in stride. In this conversation, Tench and Goldsmith talk about, again, their love of music: Tench even recalls telling his daughter that he loves her more than he loves music—the highest compliment he can pay. Both of these guys are pretty recent fathers, too, which comes up. And of course they can't get around talking about the genius of Tom Petty—and the accidental genius of Heartbreakers' guitarist Mike Campbell's shirt. Listen and you'll understand. Enjoy. Chapters: 0:00 – Intro 2:24 – Start of the chat Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Benmont Tench and Taylor Goldsmith for chatting. Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes joins us to talk about the evolution of humor in his songwriting, why he's transparent with his fans, and maybe the most Bob Dylan of Bob Dylan stories we've ever heard. PART ONE:Paul and Scott address the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area, and encourage people to help make a difference by considering a donation through one of four organizations: Fire Aid (fireaidla.org)The Red Cross (redcross.org)MusiCares (musicares.org)World Central Kitchen (wck.org) PART TWO:Our in-depth conversation with Taylor Goldsmith of DawesABOUT TAYLOR GOLDSMITH:Taylor Goldsmith is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter for the folk-influenced rock band Dawes. The group, which also includes Taylor's brother, Griffin, has released nine full-length studio albums, six of which have hit the Top 5 on Billboard's Americana/Folk Albums chart, and four of which have hit the Top 10 on Billboard's rock chart. In addition to his work with Dawes, he has been a member of the band Middle Brother with Matt Vasquez of Delta Spirit and John McCauley of Deer Tick. Taylor also contributed to T Bone Burnett's New Basement Tapes project—which completed unfinished Bob Dylan songs—alongside Marcus Mumford, Jim James, Rhiannon Giddens, and Elvis Costello. As a songwriter outside the band, Taylor has collaborated with The Killers, Conor Oberst, Brandon Flowers, Robert Ellis, Demi Lovato, and his wife Mandy Moore. The most recent Dawes album, released in October of 2024, is called Oh Brother. Sadly, not long after our conversation, both Taylor and his brother Griffin became victims of the massive Southern California wildfires that devastated portions of the Los Angeles area and severely damaged or destroyed their homes.
On this week's episode of Artist Friendly, Joel Madden is joined by Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. Goldsmith wrote Dawes' 2009 debut album, North Hills, in his early 20s. More than a decade later, he's only continued to grow as a songwriter, resulting in the band's ninth studio full-length, Oh Brother, which was released this past October. Before the band hit the road to tour those songs with Winnetka Bowling League, Goldsmith caught up with Madden about balancing being happy while also wanting more from life, getting better at being himself, and their latest album. I speak with artist and multi-instrumentalist Robert Ellis, one of the best singer-songwriters of his generation. I'll tell you why: first, his songs do what great pop songs do - grab your attention with a hook as sticky as hot honey (check out “Bottle of Wine” for an example), but you get a sense there's always something held in reserve, something that won't be revealed until you come back for a second or third or fourth listen. That might have to do with Robert's respect for the mutable laws of music theory (we talk about the relationship of the V to I cadence as the backbone for all music since Bach), or his sense of play evident in a catalogue that already spans 6 albums across genres as diverse as bluegrass-inspired ripper (“Sing Along”) to 70s' Rock (“Nobody Smokes Anymore”), or the soft spun album “Yesterday's News” reminiscent of Willie Nelson's “Rainbow Connection”.Or it could have to do with the fact that while guitar is his primary instrument (he is a *very* good guitar player) his chops on piano are formidable enough that not only did he release an album on ivories (2019's Texas Piano Man), but he toured it heavily - in a white tux and top hat, often solo at the keys. The Morse Code is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.Robert has played Tiny Desk, Mountain Stage, and more recently, Carnegie Hall and collaborated with countless musicians from Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes to Jamestown Revival to Tift Merritt.A few weeks ago he took time off his tour with Parker Millsap to talk with me about his free-spirited approach to songwriting, playing and creativity in general. In this wide-ranging conversation we talk about the narrative parallels between music and literature, and how even chord progressions have a narrative arc. We talk about the importance of — when evaluating a prospective work of art — shifting the question from “Is it perfect”? to “Is it me?” We even venture into territory of a purely philosophical bent, discussing Free Will and its role in a empathic worldview. Robert is consistent with his meditative practice, and as a father of three, his kids often join in for the morning meditation. We hit on the importance in being absolutely present while both performing and producing, and how that ethos applies to acting. Robert recently acted in a short film, directed by his wife, filmmaker Erica Silverman. He talked a little about that experience which I found revealing and charming and hilarious. Finally, the Texas Troubadour sat down to play his original “On the Run” live in studio on solo guitar. Watch and listen below. There's a lot more in this conversation, one of my favorite ever on this podcast. Get full access to The Morse Code at korby.substack.com/subscribe

This week, we talk with Kenyan singer-songwriter Ondara, who came to Minneapolis in search of his voice as a young musician, and found a new creative persona which he now embodies called The Spanish Villager. He has since taken audiences by storm, garnering a Grammy-nomination and now returning with a stunning politically-charged new LP. Spanish Villager No: 3 is produced by Ondara and Mike Viola (Jenny Lewis, Dan Wilson) with collaborations from Taylor Goldsmith and Griffin Goldsmith of Dawes, Sebastian Steinberg, Tim Kuhl and Jeremy Stacey. While he would still call himself a folk singer like his Minneapolis hero Bob Dylan, Ondara (like Dylan) has gone a bit electric on the new offering, harnessing his massive vocal power with a full band around him. Ondara's immigrant journey is truly one for the storybooks, and while he has dutifully paid homage to American folk protest singers in his previous work, the newest Spanish Villager work shows him really finding his own sound, at once sharply modern and steeped in a dark history he can't wait to mine.

Ready for some light summer reading? Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes isn't. He's currently reading Homer's The Iliad. This is the second time I've interviewed Goldsmith, and I remain in awe of his reading habits. He reads all the time. My PhD in English Literature ensures that I've always done a fair amount of reading, yet I feel silly around Goldsmith. What I love about Goldsmith is that he reads not just for fun but to be enveloped by the artist. "I get caught up in the story of the artist," he says. "That's a big part of what inspires me. I want to see how the works of artist talk to each other." He'll do this whether it's a songwriter or a prose writer. Dawes's latest album is Misadventure of Doomscroller.
In this episode, Scott sits with the charismatic singer of indie folk band, Dawes, to talk about their new album, upcoming tour, the band's history and so much more. They chat about the release of their 8th studio album and the musical community growing up in Malibu. They get into his early years growing up around his Dad as he sang for Tower of Power and what led him to his current bandmates. The two discuss the genesis of their new track, Ghost in the Machine, and how it relates to the early touring years. They also share Bob Dylan Basement tape stories and get into Taylor's personal life. Tune in!
Taylor Goldsmith joins Rhett from his home in Pasadena, CA to discuss the making of Dawes' new album and the challenges of pushing himself and the band artistically to create something new. Taylor explains why he doesn't adhere to the ‘rules' of the music business when it comes to songwriting, how he pushes through negativity, and shares the insight he would give to his 21-year old self. Taylor Goldsmith is a singer-songwriter, guitarist, and producer. He is the frontman for the band Dawes, which he formed with his younger brother in 2009. Taylor has also been involved in several side projects over the years, including Middle Brother (2010) and New Basement Tapes (2014), and performed as a session artist for singers including Jackson Browne, John Fogerty and more. “Misadventures of Doomscroller”, the new album from Dawes, will be released this month. And, don't miss Rhett's new single "Follow You Home". We had the pleasure of interviewing Anderson East over Zoom video!GRAMMY® Award-nominated Alabama-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and performer Anderson East has released his new album M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E. The reimagined recording of his critically acclaimed studio album Maybe We Never Die is available to stream and download beginning today HERE via Elektra/Low Country Sound. Last year, East reimagined, recut, and re-recorded his fifth full-length offering, Maybe We Never Die, live in one day at the legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL as M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E. He was accompanied by his bandmates, GRAMMY® Award-winning producer Dave Cobb, and a handful of close friends including Natalie Hemby, Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes, and Foy Vance. Regarding M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E., East shared, “It's amazing how easy it is to make a record after you've already made it once. This was fun, and it's a scrapbook of a moment. We're used to making records with everyone in the same room. It was nice to revert back to that. I just wanted to be around people and go play something. We decided to go to FAME for a day, because it's one of our favorite rooms and the people are incredible. It felt very natural to fully simplify Maybe We Never Die at a place we enjoy.”Maybe We Never Die initially captivated fans and critics last year. The album arrived to widespread acclaim from Forbes, NPR Music, Rolling Stone, Southern Living, American Songwriter, and more. East delivered unforgettable performances of the album's lead single “Madelyn” on Late Night with Seth Meyers, CBS Saturday Morning, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show, and celebrated the album's release with his 49-city Maybe We Never Die Tour of North America, which wrapped earlier this month. Now, M.W.N.D. / F.A.M.E. represents Anderson East at his most vulnerable, vibrant, and vital.ABOUT ANDERSON EAST:GRAMMY® Award-nominated Alabama-born and Nashville-based singer, songwriter, and performer Anderson East has always seamlessly trafficked between heritage soul, Americana, gospel, R&B, blues, roots, and rock. Following his independent debut Flowers of the Broken Hearted [2012], he continued to hone his voice and vision on Delilah [2015] and Encore [2018]. In addition to eclipsing 100 million streams, the latter yielded the single “All on My Mind,” which notably garnered a 2019 GRAMMY® Award nod in the category of “Best American Roots Performance.” In between sold out headline gigs in historic venues such as the Ryman, he delivered soaring and scorching performances on Jimmy Kimmel LIVE!, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, TODAY, Late Night with Seth Meyers, PBS' Austin City Limits, and more. Maybe We Never Die arrived to widespread tastemaker acclaim in 2021. Forbes raved, “Maybe We Never Die is fit for dancing through the end of the world,” NPR noted, “his hefty vocals seem only more urgent in this subdued setting,” and American Songwriter praised, “characterized by his gentle, We want to hear from you! Imogen Clark is an outstanding Australian singer/songwriter and not to mention, a robust businesswoman. Her mark in the entertainment industry is deep and continues to deepen. Imogen has been writing and performing songs since she was fourteen years old, starting out the way most musicians do - in local pubs. Imogen's inspirations are artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchell, Gang of Youths, and Phoebe Bridgers. Imogen has toured across Europe, the US, the UK, and across Australia. She has collaborated with artists such as Alex Lahey, Clare Bowen, Emma Swift, Anita Lester, Colin Hay, Taylor Goldsmith, Jason Boesel, Tom Petty, Pete Thomas. She has supported Shania Twain and has worked with Mark Lizotte (Johnny Deisel) who also produced her 2018 album Collide. A hard-working and passionate artist, don't look away for even a minute. In the episode we discuss everything from our dogs (sorry), the havoc the pandemic has wreaked on the entertainment industry, her family's response when she told them straight out of Year 12 that she was going to pursue music as a career, living in the Blue Mountains, the sincerity of writing music from the perspective of a third person, her identity as an artist, where to draw inspiration from when you can't travel, the struggle of women in maintaining their relevance in the entertainment industr, using your name as your brand (as a result of this conversation I got the guts to use my own name on this podcast) and yeah basically everything, we covered everything. And I might just go and try a soy latte with honey tomorrow. Find Imogen on socials @imogen__clark Enjoy the show, X JB

2018 ends as it began: with a looming government shutdown, chaos in the White House, and Paul Ryan hiding behind a potted plant. In a special holiday episode, we highlight some of our favorite moments from Lovett or Leave It this year, from Fox’s take on Colin Kaepernick, to Ijeoma Oluo’s take on #MeToo, Emily Heller’s take on shark thieves, and Lovett’s take on the food pyramid, the downfall of Hooters, and policies that force people to work when they’re sick. Plus a dramatic reading with Mandy Moore and Taylor Goldsmith as the Conways, Ezra Miller stops by to play a game and so much more. Like Nancy Pelosi said to that gavel, see you in 2019.
Fresh off a hike up Mount Kilmanjaro with his fiancee (now wife) and a ritualistic beard shaving, Taylor Goldsmith sits down to talk about Dawes’ latest, Passwords. The new record finds the band diving into the political and personal in ways not found on past records. Goldsmith is clearly in a good place, halfway through the band’s tour opening for pop-rock legends, ELO. He’s making the effort to be thankful for all of the band has amassed with half-a-dozen records over the course of nine years, even as he looks for ways to take things to the next level. It’s a hopeful talk, as Goldsmith discusses music industry competition, the future of indie rock and lessons he’s learned from The Rock’s Instagram account.

In the past decade. Starting with 2009's North Hills, the quartet has been distinguished by strong, understated ensemble playing and Taylor Goldsmith's earnest, narrative songwriting, which evokes the tenderness of Jackson Browne and the evocative storytelling of Warren Zevon. Dawes' latest album, Passwords, is the band's quietest, most austere effort, a marked contrast with 2016's adventurous and overstuffed (mostly in a good way), We're All Gonna Die. Reunited with producer Jonathan Wilson, who oversaw the first two Dawes albums before he went on to work with Father John Misty, much of Passwords is composed of shellshocked soft-rock tunes about the state of the world. I recently talked with Goldsmith about songwriting as well as the interesting place that his band has in contemporary rock — not quite mainstream, not quite indie. We also talked about what it's like to be engaged to the star of one of TV's most popular shows (pretty cool!), and whether it's ever awkward to work in the same business as your fiancee's ex-husband (sometimes but not really!).
Taylor Goldsmith begins his morning mindlessly grinding...coffee and, once caffeinated, embarks on a Big Big Day full of rock&roll, garden strolls, meaningful cilantro chopping, judging books by their covers, and growing body sideburns.

Fresh off the first shows of our Fall 2017 Tour (HAVE YOU BOUGHT TICKETS YET?!), we get right back into it with a discussion about some very important, very new Them-adjacent Whos: Francia Raisa (the woman who gave Selena Gomez her kidney) and Taylor Goldsmith (the man who gave Mandy Moore his heart). Also in this episode: Shawn Mendes's favorite scent, a Kevin Can Wait Update, some HUGE Rita Ora news, and the fight that left Mario Lopez's phone shattered in a Las Vegas gym.
Mike, Max and Shane discuss a Kee to Bala pre-party with NHL Hall of Famer Paul Coffey, their experience in Montreal for Osheaga Festival and a post-show party hosted by Letterkenny’s Jared Keeso. Maggie Rogers (“Alaska,” “Dog Years”) tells Mike about touring, early days, learning curves, managing her energy, late-night TV performances, dance influences, video treatments and preparing for change. Taylor Goldsmith and Wylie Gelber of Dawes (“When the Tequila Runs Out,” "All Your Favorite Bands") discuss festival crowds, writing with Jason Boesel, arrangements on their latest album, a memorable show in Hamburg with Conor Oberst and creating opportunities. For dessert, Shane describes a lunch date with Frank D’Angelo and a potential opportunity to appear in his upcoming film. This episode is sponsored by “The Neighborhood,” in theatres August 18.
In this edition I talk to Taylor Goldsmith: lead singer and guitarist of Dawes, member of Middle Brother, and formerly of the band Simon Dawes. I talk with Taylor about some of his favorite bands, and how they've had an influence on him as a songwriter. He also discusses his experiences in Dawes. Recorded July 18th, 2015 aboard a tour bus.
Taylor Goldsmith from Dawes goes deep on subjects like songwriting, growing up in Malibu, and how his band has the most mispronounced name in rock'n'roll!
Presenting a conversation between myself and Dawes frontman Taylor Goldsmith, on bulletproof coffee, how welcoming ex-bandmate Blake Mills into the producer chair changed the band's approach to record making for "We're All Gonna Die", why the hipsters are wrong about LA, the albums that have been his biggest inspiration and whether he feels like part of a creative community. My Favorite Album is a podcast unpacking the great works of pop music. Each episode features a different songwriter or musician discussing their favorite album of all time - their history with it, the making of the album, individual songs and the album's influence on their own music. Jeremy Dylan is a filmmaker, journalist and photographer from Sydney, Australia who has worked in the music industry since 2007. He directed the the feature music documentary Jim Lauderdale: The King of Broken Hearts (out now!) and the feature film Benjamin Sniddlegrass and the Cauldron of Penguins, in addition to many commercials and music videos. This is a golden age for fans of beardy guys who infuse their indie-rock sound with rich vocal harmonies that recall the heady days of Crosby, Stills & Nash. The L.A. band Dawes may be led by singer Taylor Goldsmith, but the group's layered backing vocals are just as much the star of its sweetly melancholy debut album, 'North Hills.' Here, Dawes performs live at the Newport Folk Festival in Newport, R.I.
