Episode 286 of “The Sports Experience Podcast” is here & we're continuing our block on some of the NFL's best postseason games of all time.In this episode we're discussing the 1981 AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers. In a clash of styles, these two teams lived up to the hype. The “Air Coryell” Chargers sped out to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter with some incredible plays on offense & special teams.Don Shula's Dolphins eventually hit their stride when they inserted backup quarterback Don Strock, and they only found themselves down 24-17 at Halftime after a “Hook & Lateral” play at the end of the first half led to a touchdown by Tony Nathan. On a hot & muggy evening in Miami, both teams battled back and forth in the second half. The Dolphins almost won the game in regulation until Dan Fouts threw a touchdown pass to James Brooks late in the fourth quarter.Miami responded when they set up Uwe von Schamann for a field goal attempt to clinch the game on the final play, but Kellen Winslow blocked the game-winning field goal attempt to force OT.During the marathon extra period, both San Diego and Miami could not convert field goal attempts. However, Fouts, Charlie Joiner, Wes Chandler and Winslow helped the Chargers set up a 29 yard field goal attempt for Rolf Benirscke towards the end of OT. Benirscke drilled the kick & San Diego won what many consider to be the greatest postseason game in NFL history.Connect with us on Instagram!Chris Quinn: @cquinncomedyDominic DiTolla: @ditolladominicProducer: @ty_englestudioInstagram: @thesportsexperiencepodcastIf you enjoy this podcast, please help support us @:https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/the-sports-experience-pod/support#sportspodcast#comedypodcast#miamidolphins#sandiegochargers

As Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals get ready to host the Las Vegas Raiders in the playoffs, In The Trenches with Dave Lapham presented by First Star Logistics takes a look back to January 10, 1982, when Lapham and his Bengals teammates led by quarterback Ken Anderson and head coach Forrest Gregg, took on Don Coryell, Dan Fouts, and the San Diego Chargers in the coldest game played in NFL history when adding in wind chill, -9 but with sustained winds of 27 miles per hour making it -37. With three future NFL Hall of Fame players taking the field for the Chargers in Fouts, receiver Charlie Joiner and tight end Kellen Winslow, it was Anderson and the play of Dan Ross, Pete johnson, Reggie Williams, Jim Breech, Rick Razzano, M.L. Harris, and other Bengals to come out on top in the AFC Championship Game 27-7 to advance to the first Super Bowl in franchise history. Lapham takes a look back at the days leading up to the game with how head coach Forrest Gregg used his past of playing in the Ice Bowl for Vince Lombardi to get the Bengals ready and what the offensive linemen did on game day to hopefully give them a slight advantage over the Chargers. You're going to love this trip down memory lane.

NFL Draft week is finally upon us, and host Pat Fitzmaurice celebrates by bringing in Matt Waldman, longtime Footballguys.com staffer and the creator of the indispensable Rookie Scouting Portfolio, a must-have for fantasy managers. Matt explains why Peyton Manning was a chef and Tom Brady was a baker, then discusses which of the top QBs from this class might fall into those culinary categories. Matt won’t be aghast if Mac Jones goes to the 49ers with the third pick and explains why, then extols the virtues of Trey Lance, explains why knocks on Justin Fields’ processing are flawed, and expresses his concerns about Zach Wilson. Who’s Matt’s No. 1 RB? It isn’t Najee Harris. Having once preferred Marshawn Lynch as a prospect over Adrian Peterson, and Nick Chubb over Saquon Barkley, Matt makes the case for Trey Sermon – and it involves something called curvilinear movement. After offering words of praise for Najee Harris and Michael Carter, Matt makes elevator pitches for Khalil Herbert and Kylin Hill. Matt talks the decision to finally ditch his 9-to-5 job to work on the RSP full-time, then discusses his musical background. Then the conversation turns to receivers and what Matt calls the best WR class he’s ever evaluated. He explains why Jaylen Waddle is his No. 2 receiver, compares Rashod Bateman to Cordarrelle Patterson (in a good way), and touts the upside of Kadarius Toney. He also goes to bat for two of his favorite sleepers in the class: Frank Darby and Josh Palmer. Finally, Matt offers a vast array of Kyle Pitts comps – Calvin Johnson, Travis Kelce, Kellen Winslow, Jimmy Graham, Evan Engram, Albert Okwuegbunam – and puts a few chips down on the one he thinks is most likely to stick. NFL Hall of Fame 2019 | Re-Live Stories From the Hall The NFL Hall of Fame 2019 enshrinement is in the books.  Each year Hall of Fame weekend is a sight to behold, and each year it gets bigger and bigger.  This year there were 8 inductees.  You can learn more about them in the following 2 episodes that were released a few weeks ago: NFL Hall of Fame 2019 Class - Part 1 NFL Hall of Fame 2019 Class - Part 2 This episode takes you live in Canton, OH for Hall of Fame weekend.  You will hear stories from fans at the Hall, talking about their favorite football moments of all-time.  And as a side treat, you get to hear where they would take the keys to my DeLorean when I ask them where they are going to any point in NFL history.  The caveat.  They can't change the outcome, even though some snuck it passed me.  Either way, this is a cool episode for fans of the NFL. I'd also love to hear your favorite football moment or the moment you're taking my DeLorean to back in NFL history.  If you would like to be on the show and share your story, head to https://thefootballhistorydude.com/myfootballmoment/ (MY FOOTBALL MOMENT) for the details. Guests On This Episode Ron Whisman - Ron was the first person I interviewed this year at the Hall of Fame to get his favorite story.  As we were walking by the hall of busts, I hear Ron tell his family "this is like a religion to me".  I was like, yup, I gotta go talk to that dude. Dillon Whisman - Dillon was the first to bring up the one time in his NFL career that Tebow was able to figure out how to throw the football in this AFC Wild Card game.  Oh yeah, Dillon sneaks in a way to change the outcome when he takes the keys to my DeLorean.  But with the story, I have to allow it. Allen Hedge - Another guy talking about the https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssrkObXkGbM (John Elway helicopter) move in the Super Bowl.  The story I thought that really told how fans think of their heroes on the gridiron comes in the form of Allen talking about John Elway's retirement speech. Ben Broumand - This guy was all decked out in Lion's gear, so you know I was all about it.  His favorite moment was the game when the Detroit Lions beat the San Diego Chargers at the end of the 2011 season to advance to their first playoffs in forever.  The game he was taking my DeLorean back to was when the Lions captured their first postseason win since 1957, beating the Cowboys in the 1991 Divisional Playoffs.  I'm going to pause right now and think about that.  How many years were there in between?  Holy cats, batman.  Nonetheless, we did have BARRY for a brief moment.  Ben brought up another moment where he watched Barry after practice running sprints when everyone went to the locker room, and that's how his uncle told him Barry was the best.  He was willing to put the work in. Bronco Queen - The Bronco Queen has season tickets and reminisced of Super Bowl 50 when Peyton Manning rode off into that sunset.  She also brings up how "gorgeous Champ Bailey is" and that she didn't understand how that was possible.  I will leave no comment. Gregory Brown - Gregory reminisced about Kellen Winslow playing hurt and overcoming a deficit.  He also talked about how the 60s and 70s were a different type of game.  I covered the AFL-NFL Merger in some previous episodes if you want to learn more about the time.  He also wants to go back to the Tebow toss to Thomas.  This time he wants to remind Tebow that he doesn't know how to throw a football.  Gregory was also a fan of the Steelers during the 70s. Jack Umlauf - Jack was a former reporter for the Buffalo Bills and Carolina Panthers.  He had quite a bit to say about various topics, but one thing he wanted to point out was how he felt the Bills fans are the most loyal there are.  One way to back it up was having fans show up during the blizzards.  Here's one that comes up.  He wants to go back to... Mo Motion - The Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 2, 2015 48:02

Pete Holohan is the son of a World War II father who won a purple heart and bronze star. Pete played football at Notre Dame and for 12 years as a tight end in the NFL. In this episode of MoMotion, I talk with my cousin Pete about being recruited by Jim Boeheim, what it felt like to play in big bowl games, and life in the NFL where he played behind the great Kellen Winslow. Pete reveals the truth behind the concussions, cortisone injections, as how much grit it took to achieve excellence. He also discusses how his athletic experiences have helped him transition into his career post-football. The powerful impact of a father who understood the vital role of discipline: What is the role of discipline in life? Do you know? People who have experienced its benefits, veterans, for example, have been taught the role that discipline plays in personal achievement and the service of others. Pete Holohan points to his father’s attitude about discipline as one of the things that shaped his attitude about excellence and accomplishments... "He understood what discipline meant. He learned that in the Marines in World War II…He won the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart and he never talked much about it but I think he understood that at some point in our lives athletically or not, discipline becomes a foundation for the person you would like to become and if you don’t have it you’re going to struggle. He had a saying, “When things go bad, get up and go back to work.” Transitioning from college ball to pro ball is not as easy at it might appear: When Pete Holohan was drafted by the San Diego Chargers he discovered quickly that he was no longer a big fish in a small pond. Though the Notre Dame environment was high pressure and demanding in its own way, the professional football environment brought its own challenges. One of those was the pace of the game... "As good as I was in college, when I got here (San Diego) I realized immediately that everybody was talented and it took a while for me to catch up with the speed of the game, cause I think you see so many college athletes who don’t excel at the next level because the game is so much faster. And it took a while but it was definitely a great experience.... Kellen (Winslow), prior to his injuries was the most dominant tight end in the game. And if he didn’t get hurt… he probably would have gone down as the greatest tight end. He’s in the hall of fame, so that speaks volumes." How he retired from pro football and carried the same mindset into the corporate world: When Pete Holohan decided to retire from pro football he stepped into the corporate world as a salesman. It was a very difficult transition at first but Pete persevered with the same character he demonstrated while on the field. He’s moved his way up from sales team member to sales manager and says that the same dedication and discipline that made him successful on the field is what fuels him to drive results in his present position. As most pro athletes will tell you, there are life-long lessons that athletics taught them. Pete's story is a great example of that truth. Outline of This Episode [0:55] My introduction to Pete Holohan, my cousin, NFL player, and hoops star. [3:05] Pete as a young athlete and when he knew he wanted to pursue sports seriously. [5:00] The role Pete’s family played in his accomplishments and achievements. [10:00] Being recruited for both basketball and football - and the difficult decision. [13:30] Playing football in a legendary program like Notre Dame. [18:35] The transition from college to pro football. [23:25] Where the competitive spirit and training fit into the puzzle of athletics. [31:20] The concussion issue in football and Pete’s perspective on the issue, including his own experience with 10+ concussions. [38:14] The physical issues that pushed Pete toward retirement and the things that made the transition so difficult. [42:41] 3 things Pete loves about his journey. [45:36] Things Pete would change if he had it to do over again: train smarter, enjoy the ride more, play basketball instead.
