Welcome to Episode 228! 2025 is the year of the Ghost Story. We've created a tab on the website to keep you up-to-date on our quarterly readalongs, the schedule for the year-long buddy read of THE PENGUIN BOOK OF GHOST STORIES: From Elizabeth Gaskell to Ambrose Bierce, and there is a downloadable Ghost Story Bingo Card; we would love for you to play along. Be sure to bookmark the page and check back for updates. On this episode we do a deep dive on Shirley Jackson's THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE which is our first quarter readalong. Chris has read the novel numerous times; this was Emily's first time, and she is now a Shirley Jackson devotee. During the conversation, they mention other complimentary readings, podcasts, and film adaptations, including the biography SHIRLEY JACKSON: A Rather Haunted Life by Ruth Franklin. Chris and Emily both had #CouchBiblioAdventures. Emily watched the movie Lee starring Kate Winslet about photographer Lee Miller. It reminded her of Whitney Scharer's novel THE AGE OF LIGHT. Chris watched Season One, Episode Four of ROAR: The Woman Who Found Bite Marks on Her Skin based on the book of short stories by Cecelia Ahern. Emily also attended an in-person event via RJ Julia's Booksellers in Madison, CT with Kristan Higgins in conversation with Charmaine Wilkerson and her new novel GOOD DIRT. Of course, we also talk about what we're currently reading, hope to read, upcoming jaunts, and scary neighbors, after all it is the year of the ghost story. We wish you lots of Happy Reading! Why You Should Take a Plot-walk

✍️ Writers: when you're stuck on a plot, go outside and take a walk with a friend. You'll still be stuck, but you will get your steps in for the day, and have someone to b***h to. Follow us for more plotting tips. Here all week.Sometimes Sarina and I take an ordinary walk. Most times, actually. But sometimes, part way up the first hill, Sarina says, Ok, so I have this problem. And then we're off, trying to figure out why a character would make a certain choice, or how to get someone from point A to point B.And then I will say, ok, I have a problem. And occasionally it's that simple, but for me, the problem is usually that I have made my plot so ludicrously over-complicated that it cannot even be explained, let alone reduced to a single problem. Which is a different problem. And then we try to fix THAT. Either way, there's a point here, which is: putting the problem, or the plot, into words in itself can help solve it—or reveal what's really wrong—and also, it can really help to get a new perspective. In the episode, we talk about how and why to do this (it doesn't have to involve a walk or a dog or a hill), who you can enlist (apparently Kristan Higgins does it with her husband, only he's not actually allowed to talk) and most importantly, we discuss getting past the all the voices in your head telling you not to, and and note that the louder those voices are, the more likely it is that maybe you need to talk this over with someone before you go any further.A few things we referenced: the summer planning series, Blueprint for a Book Challenge, which included a LOT of talk about why it's a good idea to voice what you're planning to do before you do it.Links from the Pod:Becca Syme Jennie's book The Last Beach BungalowSarina's book Rookie MoveOtter (voice recording app)#AmReadingKJ: The Mistborn Trilogy, Brandon SandersonWreck the Halls, Tessa BaileySarina: The Intern, Michele CampbellJennie: Debbie Millman's Design Matters (Podcast)The Creative Act, Rick Rubin During the pandemic, there was an explosion of people who wanted to write memoir, and many of those writers are now struggling to make sense of their drafts and figure out how to approach the marketplace. The most recent one, Ten Things I Hate About the Duke, just won an RWA award for the best long historical. That's a great track record you can be proud of. Loretta Chase: I really am. I'm very proud of that book. I was so happy when it won the award. I felt as though those two books, the first two in the Duke series, were strong work. So it was great to have that recognition. Jenny Wheeler: And just as a little aside, they're calling it by a different name. They're calling it a Vivian, aren't they? But is that the same as the old Rita? Loretta Chase: Yes, it is the same. It’s the things-that-aren’t in the episode edition of your weekly #AmWriting email! First off, about 60 seconds in, I mention (this is KJ, it’s nearly always KJ) a podcast I like. But then I flake off to look up the name… and forget to ever mention it again. It’s the Crappy Friends Podcast with Kristan Higgins and Joss Dey. And it’s FICTION GOLD. Every week, a couple of people write in with stories of awful friends and angsty dilemmas and towns that are too-small-for-the-both-of-us and there is a novel in every question and a whole lot of shadenfreudy entertainment in the answers provided by best friends Kristan and Joss. It’s a fun, I’m just here for the hang situation.Want more? Sarina just texted me that she forgot to tell y’all her BIGGEST achievement so far this year: she writes first thing. I’m going to take credit for this one. I’m a big fan of eat-the-frog first (I exercise first thing, then write, for the same reasons) although I can’t remember what I said that finally got her to actually do it, but she just gave herself a big, justified pat-on-the-back for this one. “I have felt as though I had lots of free time this month because I didn’t spend half the day in avoidance.” That’s a gift you can give yourself too!Overall note from the episode? There are lots of reasons to check in on your goals. To cheer. To re-assess and decide—do I even want this? If I do, what do I need to go to get there? To wonder—really? Why? Maybe I don’t need to organize that drawer. Maybe I need to throw its contents away. To remind ourselves of what we’ve done, and what we still hope to do.It’s all even more meaningful that we all figured out the universal truth that landed in March 2020: we don’t even really control the goals we think we can control. With numerous AudioFile Earphones Awards and nearly 200 audiobooks to her credit so far, Xe Sands is known for her ability to make an audiobook an intimate experience for her listeners. Interestingly, Sands didn't come to audiobooks through acting as most narrators do. She began her adult life as a visual artist. “I used to paint. I did a lot of photo manipulation, and just a whole bunch of handcrafting of all kinds.” How did she get involved in the audio world? “My daughter and I had a long commute for many years, and we went through a million audiobooks.” She also read aloud to her daughter, until it dawned on her: “I would love to do that.” She didn't think her voice would be one that anyone would want to hear, but she really wanted to try her hand at narration. So in 2008, she discovered a supportive audio community that encouraged recording. She worked with them for a few years before she was “discovered.” She's won several of the coveted AudioFile Earphones Awards and has narrated novels for Alafair Burke, Kristan Higgins, Bethany Crandell, Lily King, Jami Attenberg, BA Shapiro, Darby Kane, Kennedy Ryan, Chuck Wendig, Juliette Blackwell, CD Reese, KJ Dell'Antonia,  Hannah Morrissey, Paul Tremblay, Carrington MacDuffie, Judy Blume, and many more, including Kris's second novel, Sissie Klein is Completely Normal. Intro roll for WTPC

The proud descendant of a butcher and a laundress, Kristan lives in Connecticut with her heroic firefighter husband. They own several badly behaved pets and are often visited by their entertaining and long-lashed children. About PACK UP THE MOON: Joshua and Lauren are the perfect couple. Newly married, they're wildly in love, each on a successful and rewarding career path. Then Lauren is diagnosed with a terminal illness. As Lauren's disease progresses, Joshua struggles to make the most of the time he has left with his wife and to come to terms with his future--a future without the only woman he's ever loved. He's so consumed with finding a way to avoid the inevitable ending that he never imagines his life after Lauren. But Lauren has a plan to keep her husband moving forward. A plan hidden in the letters she leaves him. In those letters, one for every month in the year after her death, Lauren leads Joshua on a journey through pain, anger, and denial. It's a journey that will take Joshua from his attempt at a dinner party for family and friends to getting rid of their bed...from a visit with a psychic medium to a kiss with a woman who isn't Lauren. As his grief makes room for laughter and new relationships, Joshua learns Lauren's most valuable lesson: The path to happiness doesn't follow a straight line. Sometimes heartbreaking, often funny, and always uplifting, this novel from New York Times bestselling author Kristan Higgins illuminates how life's greatest joys are often hiding in plain sight. Hi there I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and today Kristan talks about staying true to what you know when the 'market' is screaming another message, and why she's ruthless with her own work. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: Why Kristan ditched her first attempt at writing Why small town romance suits her perfectly  Ignoring the market - Yes or No? The benefits of being a good listener The writers she admires most The one thing she'd done that's made her success Where to find Kristan Higgins:  Website: kristanhiggins.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/KristanHigginsBooks/  Twitter: https://twitter.com/Kristan_Higgins What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny: But now, here's Kristan.  Hello there Kristan,  and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us. Kristan: Thank you so much for having me Jenny! Jenny: Beginning at the beginning - was there a “Once Upon A Time moment when you decided you wanted to write fiction?  And if there was a catalyst, what was it? Romance author Kristan Higgins Kristan: You know, there wasn't a moment  like that. I wish there were, because it sounds great being knocked on your side wanting to do something. I really wanted to be paediatrician, and I still think that would be great except I have no aptitude for maths or science. I never thought about being an author until I was 36, and my son was three years old at nursery school. The day was approaching where he would be at school all day. I thought- I've got a couple of years before that happens, and I really would love to stay home with the kids, and be the person to get them off the school bus, and be around for other events and everything because I had been a stay at home mum until that point. My husband was working two jobs, so I knew that it wouldn't really be fair for the kids to go off to school and for me to be alone for 8 hours and not contribute to the family finances. So I thought, ok; I can bartend, or maybe I could write a book! I loved reading; if anything knocked me on the side of the head with a baseball bat, it was the love of reading from an early age. I learnt to read when I was four, and books made up a huge part of my life. So I felt qualified in one respect, in that I had just read thousands of romance novels. And I thought: I think I can write one, I think I can understand them well enough to write one. And why not? I had worked in advertising, so I had been a professional writer. I actually had advantages there, and I sat down to give that a try. Fools Rush In - Kristan Higgins Jenny: Your first novel was Fools Rush In, a contemporary romance, published in 2007. Was romance a natural genre for you – and was “Fools” the first ms you ever finished? Kristan: Well, it was. I had started another manuscript which is now sort of a joke to me; it was a historical romance set in Ireland during the Potato Famine. So if you're familiar with my books, you'd think "it was what Kristan?!" So I started to write that book, and for some reason I thought it was a really good idea and then I went to a writer's conference and  I realised I had no knowledge of this era. I was just kind of making things up as I went along. It was really depressing, as you can imagine, stuck in the Potato Famine. So I thought, what I should really write is a romantic comedy set in contemporary time, set in a small town because that's what I loved to read. That's where I lived- I lived in a small town, so then I thought I'd be writing about what I knew. So Fools Rush In started at that conference, and finished about six months later in terms of the first draft.
