We've all heard Peter Drucker's famous quote, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." But what does it really take to build a workplace culture that drives both people and performance? In this episode of Mission First People Always, Dr. Mike Patterson sits down with culture expert Andrea Wanerstrand to uncover the key elements of creating a thriving, human-centric workplace. Dr. Mike welcomes Andrea Wanerstrand, Founder & CEO of A3 CultureLab, a leadership speaker, coach, and consultant who helps organizations—from startups to Fortune 500 companies—design extraordinary workplace cultures. With a background in global performance management at companies like Microsoft and T-Mobile, Andrea shares insights on fostering a workplace where people feel valued, autonomous, and accountable. Andrea breaks down what it means to have a human-centric workplace, emphasizing the importance of how work gets done, how leaders make others feel, and how trust is built. She explains that culture isn't just about perks or policies—it's about how people interact, communicate, and show up every day. Throughout the conversation, Andrea offers practical advice for leaders, including how to balance empathy with authority, create autonomous teams, and encourage a culture of accountability without fear. She also shares details about her upcoming coaching program, Mindset Maven, designed to help high-achievers develop mental and physical resilience. Key Takeaways: Culture is about the "how," not just the "what"—how work is done, how people feel, and how trust is built. Human-centric leadership requires balancing empathy with authority to foster both people and performance. Autonomous teams thrive on accountability—leaders must set expectations, provide trust, and encourage transparency. Accountability isn't a bad word—it's about taking ownership, getting credit for success, and learning from setbacks. Your energy affects your leadership—Andrea recommends an energy audit to identify when you're at your best and schedule key conversations accordingly. Andrea Wanerstrand's insights remind us that leadership is about creating environments where people can thrive. Whether you're a new manager or a seasoned executive, understanding and shaping culture is key to long-term success. What do leadership and ballet have in common? More than you might think! In this inspiring episode of Mission First People Always, Dr. Mike Patterson speaks with Ahli Moore about the surprising connections between ballet and leadership, uncovering how the discipline, practice, and passion behind the art of dance can guide leaders to be more effective and impactful. Dr. Mike welcomes Ahli Moore, founder of X-Factor Solutions, a consulting firm dedicated to leadership development and organizational transformation. Drawing on his unique perspective as a business leader and his connection to the ballet world through his wife, a professional choreographer and former ballerina, Ahli shares how foundational principles of ballet mirror essential leadership practices. Ahli discusses the importance of passion and purpose in leadership, drawing parallels with the early dedication of ballet dancers. He highlights how practice, preparation, and consistency are vital for both dancers and leaders, emphasizing that great performances—on stage or in the boardroom—are the result of relentless preparation. Ahli also introduces the concept of core positions in ballet, which serve as a foundation for all movements, and relates this to defining and mastering core leadership skills. He explores how adaptability and the ability to pivot in challenging situations can make leaders more resilient and effective. Finally, Ahli dives into the importance of receiving feedback, or “post-performance notes,” as an ongoing practice for growth and excellence. Leaders, like dancers, must embrace continuous improvement to stay at the top of their game. Key Takeaways: Passion and Purpose: Leaders, like dancers, need to continuously assess their passion for their work and ensure their purpose aligns with their goals. Practice and Preparation: Excellence doesn't happen overnight—it's the result of consistent effort and refinement. Core Positions: Identify and master the foundational skills that everything else builds upon. The Power of Pivoting: Adaptability is key, but always stay anchored to your core values. Feedback for Growth: Welcome constructive criticism as a tool for improvement, and incorporate it into your daily practices. Ahli Moore's insights remind us that great leadership is an art form, requiring passion, discipline, and continuous improvement. Whether you're leading a team or striving for personal excellence, these lessons from the ballet world can guide you to greater success. In today's fast-paced world, it seems like everyone is talking about being “triggered.” But what does it really mean, and how can leaders and employees manage their triggers to stay focused and productive? In this episode, Dr. Mike Patterson and Jeff Gaines dive into how to become “triggerproof,” offering practical strategies to overcome workplace stress and emotional reactions. Dr. Mike welcomes Jeff Gaines, a personal development expert with over 30 years of experience working with leaders across industries. Jeff introduces his latest offering, Triggerproof, a program designed to help leaders and teams manage their emotional responses in high-stress environments. Jeff breaks down human motivation into two drives: the urge to create and the urge to protect. When we're triggered, we move into protection mode, often subconsciously. Jeff explains how triggers aren't always obvious—most people don't look visibly upset or angry. Instead, they quietly disengage, reduce productivity, or withhold valuable feedback that could improve decision-making. Throughout the conversation, Jeff discusses his Three Drivers model, which explains how our thoughts and emotions are shaped by a "screen" of unconscious processing. This screen often distorts reality, leading to emotional responses that seem disproportionate to the situation. Jeff's program teaches leaders how to recognize these distortions and manage them effectively. He also emphasizes the importance of emotional resilience and collaboration in the workplace. Whether you're a leader looking to encourage honest feedback or a team member trying to overcome stress, understanding and managing triggers is key to thriving in today's work environment. Key Takeaways: Triggers Are Not Always Visible: People may not outwardly express when they're triggered, but it impacts their work. Managing the "Screen": Our emotions and logic are shaped by a filter that distorts reality. Learning to manage this screen is crucial. Emotional vs. Logical Decisions: While we often think we're making logical decisions, emotions play a larger role than we realize. Resilience Tools: Building emotional resilience helps us bounce back faster when triggered, leading to better collaboration and decision-making. Jeff Gaines' approach offers practical, real-world strategies for managing emotional responses in the workplace. By understanding how our brains process information and learning to manage our reactions, we can foster healthier, more productive work environments. Mike shares how agents need to stay informed about market changes, effectively communicate their value to clients, and maintain a strong work ethic. He also discusses the importance of relentless determination and effective leadership. Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn from a seasoned professional and get a sneak peek into his upcoming book, "The Quantum Real Estate Agent."    Tune in to gain practical tips and inspiration for your own real estate career!   “Our agents, if they're not up to date on these situations, then they're not present. They've been living in a cave somewhere, and to your earlier point, they may not make it past these changes if you can't explain it, if you can't defend your value. And I think that's a healthy thing, because if you're not serious about this profession and doing business the right way, then my bold opinion is you don't need to be in this profession. Maybe you need to find something else to do.” - Mike Allen   Key takeaways to delve into:   Importance of Adaptation: Real estate agents must adapt to current market conditions, including understanding and navigating changes and challenges such as lawsuits and market shifts. Continuous Education: Staying informed about industry changes is crucial. Agents need to continually educate themselves to stay ahead. Effective Communication: Agents must effectively communicate their value to clients, particularly in explaining how they are compensated. Relentless Determination: Success in real estate requires relentless determination and a strong work ethic. Mike Allen emphasizes the importance of not giving up despite challenges. Leadership and Support: Strong leadership is essential in guiding agents through changes and helping them develop necessary skills. Providing continuous training and support is key. Buyer Representation Agreements: With new mandates, agents should sit down with prospective buyers at the onset to establish relationships and clarify expectations. Value of Proper Preparation: Preparing meticulously and being ready for market fluctuations and changes helps in sustaining and growing in the real estate industry. Training and Resources: Providing regular training and updates to agents ensures they are well-prepared to handle new market realities and client expectations. Upcoming Book: Mike Allen is releasing a book titled "The Quantum Real Estate Agent," which aims to provide a comprehensive guide for aspiring real estate professionals, sharing his personal experiences and insights. Professional Mindset: Treating real estate as an entrepreneurial endeavor and setting oneself up for success through proper preparation and affiliation with the right company is crucial for long-term success.   About Mike Allen:   Mike Allen is President and Co-Owner at Century 21 Jordan-Link & Company, globally recognized as a Top 25 Century 21 franchise. We're sharing this guest episode again because it is full of such innovative and exciting medical advances that more of us should be aware of. If you didn't catch this one the first time, here is your chance. Dr. Timothy Nelson is the founder of HeartWorks, an organization that developed from the Todd & Karen Wanek Family Program for Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome founded at the Mayo Clinic in 2010. Tim's work specializes in the creation of stem cells to create heart muscle and hopefully cure pediatric congenital heart defects in the near future. The HeartWorks team has developed a platform that enables multiple cell-based clinical trials to be conducted simultaneously in collaboration with a consortium of world-class medical institutions. Check out this short video that chronicles the transformative technology of bioengineered cardiac tissue by converting a piece of skin from an individual to a beating heart muscle.Dr. Nelson earned his MD and his Doctor of Philosophy from the Medical College of Wisconsin, and he's been a physician at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN since 2005In this episode, Dr. Nelson dives into the incredibly exciting technology that he and his team at HeartWorks are working on in an effort to create positive outcomes for those born with congenital heart defects. Statistics show that 1 in 100 children are born with a congenital heart defect and 1 in 4 of those born with a CHD will require a life-saving surgical procedure within their first year of life. Even with these interventions, 50% of children born with CHD won't make it to their fifth birthday. HeartWorks is working tirelessly to give children and adults with CHD a promising and fulfilling future.Dr. Nelson explains what exactly stem cells are, and how they are being used to have the potential to rebuild the heart. This is a fascinating episode, and I know you won't want to miss it.Quote from the episode:“We are on the tip of an iceberg and when we show this model can work, it is catalytic” - Dr. Tim NelsonTo learn more about Dr. Tim Nelson, please see the links below:Website: heartworksinc.orgCase2Cure Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/cause2cure/id1489215831LinkedIn:  https://www.linkedin.com/in/tim-nelson-cause2cure/Facebook (personal): https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100010438424147To Connect with Mike:Website: https://mikemalatesta.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikemalatesta/Get Mike's book “Owner Shift”: https://mikemalatesta.com/owner-shift-book-by-mike-malatesta/Please LIKE

History provides the opportunity to study the past through the lens of the present, but what makes history so exciting for many of us is those moments when we truly feel transported back to those earlier days to see the world through the eyes of our predecessors–pioneers who laid the foundation for the lives we experience now. And the stories of the past become even more rich and vivid when they involve our own ancestors. I'm excited to share my conversation with an author who transports us back nearly 100 years–to a time when the promise of southern California was just beginning. It was a time when the California coastline was still wild and uncharted, the beaches were pristine, and there was no traffic!  And my guest allows us to experience the remarkable sights and sounds of these different times through a beautiful love story. Whether you're interested in the history of California, romance, or how individuals can shape the course of history, you're going to enjoy my conversation with author John Thill. About the Guest John Wilcox Thill is the author of A California Love Story. It's the romantic story of Ray and Dora, John's grandparents recreated through a series of forgotten love letters from his grandparents' courtship. Within their worn folds, John found a story that was both timeless and filled with emotion, all happening in an era in American history when the future of California was still taking shape. John is a graduate of San Diego State University and spent much of his career in managing and producing video content for large organizations. Later, he transitioned to corporate learning and development, and became a partner in a global talent development company. Have you ever tried to learn from the future? Probably not, because it is hard to learn from something that has yet to happen. We can imagine the future and create it, but we can't use it as a lesson. What about the present? The present is fleeting and happening right now at this moment, so it's not something we can really learn from either. What we can definitely learn from is the past. The past has all the lessons of what has happened, and it is like a library that we can learn from. We can study success, failures, and everything in between, and take note of how we can improve. We have all heard the saying “history repeats itself”, but if we really think about it, it's actually human nature that repeats itself. History tends to repeat itself because we as humans, repeat ourselves and make the same mistakes as those that came before us. By studying history, we can try to avoid the mistakes of the past and get the benefit of taking valuable lessons to become better.Key Highlights:Mike shares a podcast he listens to called “Founders” and what he has learned from tuning itMike uses the lessons from history to ask “How can I take them to be better?”Why it is important to study the past?Links mentioned in the episode:Podcast: FoundersTo Connect with Mike:Website: https://mikemalatesta.com/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikemalatesta/Get Mike's book “Owner Shift”: https://mikemalatesta.com/owner-shift-book-by-mike-malatesta/To Connect with Mike: Website LinkedIn Instagram Twitter YouTube Coaching Get Mike's book: Owner Shift Please LIKE
