On today's installment of the world's only extreme metal podcast, we come with three triumphant returns by three favorites of the show- this is one for the record books, folks, with one of the strongest lineups of records in a single episode we've ever featured. First up: the shocking return of Mutiilation, whose 17 year absence seemingly never occurred as Meyna'ch presents six tracks of caustic and necro French black metal in a style nearly forgotten. Next up: another massive comeback by Brodequin, whose custom brand of blast-oriented brutal death is expanded upon with clearer production and a more pronounced sense of melody. Rounding things out: Coffins returns with more Coffins. No further explanation is required. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:01:54 - Mutiilation - Black Metal Cult (Osmose Productions) 1:04:31 - Interlude - Hell Militia - “Born Without Light” fr. Marcia Franklin talks with Idaho filmmaker Michael Hoffman, whose movie The Last Station has been nominated for two Academy Awards. Based on a novel by Jay Parini of the same name, The Last Station chronicles the final year in the life of Russian writer and philosopher Leo Tolstoy, who was locked in a battle with his wife Sophia about the rights to his works. Tolstoy is surrounded by acolytes who want him to leave the copyrights to his major novels such as War and Peace and Anna Karenina to the Russian people, while Sophia wants the Tolstoy family to keep the rights. Hoffman, who wrote and directed the script, shuttled for years between Boise and Germany, where the film was financed and made. He talks with Franklin about why he was attracted to the story, the process of making the film, and what it was like to direct Helen Mirren and Christopher Plummer, who play the Tolstoys. Both are nominated for Academy Awards. Originally aired: 03/04/2010
Clay Epstein, president of Film Mode Entertainment, has spent his life pushing the boundaries of what is possible for independent filmmakers. Epstein is inventive, always looking for that special "something" that makes a film stand out. In doing so, he has created a successful career in making films through Film Mode Entertainment and has become the co-chair of the Indedpent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) and American Film Market (AFM). Epstein gives us the latest forecast in domestic and international trends, where the independent film circuit is going, and what filmmakers should do to take advantage of both IFTA and AFM's services. The IFTA supports, protects, and advances the global independent film and TV industry. Their membership includes more than 140 companies from 23 countries. From independent production and distribution companies to sales agents and financiers, they are the only organization that unites the collective voice of Independents worldwide and ensures that they are well represented across all issues that impact the independent business. AFM includes acquisition and development executives, agents, attorneys, directors, distributors, festival directors, financiers, film commissioners, producers, writers, the world's press, and all those who provide services to the motion picture industry. This brings a place for everyone to converge to push forward those must-see films. On today's inaugural episode we have poet, novelist, biographer, screenwriter, and Professor at Middlebury College, Jay Parini. Throughout his illustrious career, Parini has authored several biographies on writers including Robert Frost, John Steinbeck, and Gore Vidal. His novel about Leo Tolstoy, The Last Station, was adapted into an award winning movie in 2009 starring Christopher Plummer and Helen Mirren. His most recent book, Borges and Me is about an excursion with Jorge Luis Borges in Scotland. It was published in 2020. We spoke over zoom in late June, and touched on everything from faith to politics to war. Jay Parini's insights are grounded in close readings and meditations on poetry, philosophy, and religious texts, and they provide a refreshing way of thinking about the polarized world we live in. Our conversation weaved between the artistic and political, and was filled with little nuggets of writing tips that stemmed from his 50 year teaching career. Today we are talking about a 1985 Scottish film called Restless Nattives written by Ninian Dunnett and directed by Michael Hoffman who also directed the 1999 A Midsummer Night's Dream and the 2009 The Last Station. It tells the bizarre tale of two wayward individuals making their way through the countryside robbing tourist busses. Will: “We could go into hiding in Penicuik. We could wear disguises to go to the shops!” Some of our favorite parts of this movie are: Beautiful countryside Silly masks Comic timing with a herd of sheep Silly powder filled toy gun The romance between Will and Margot They become like Robin Hood characters - The Highland Heroes Special thanks to our editor Geoff Vrijmoet for this episode and Melissa Villagrana for helping out with our social media posts. The year is 2010 and the nominees are: 1. Carey Mulligan - An Education 2. Helen Mirren - The Last Station 3. Meryl Streep - Julie & Julia 4. Gabourey Sidibe - Precious 5. Sandra Bullock - The Blind Side In 2010 Sandra Bullock took home the Oscar for Best Actress for The Blind Side. Up until this point in her career she was mostly known for rom-com roles, so this win was significant. Her fellow nominees included Carey Mulligan, a new face, for An Education - a good but creepy movie. Helen Mirren in The Last Station playing the wife of Russian author Leo Tolstoy, Sofya. Meryl Streep playing the flamboyantly eccentric Julia Child. Gabourey Sidibe was nominated for Precious directed by Lee Daniels. Arguably one of the most difficult movies I have ever watched. Very dark. Very interesting year! Who do you think should have won? Canada has been the home of several great actors but one of the true legends was Christopher Plummer. We pay tribute to the icon on the latest episode of The Movie Breakdown with reviews for four of his movies. His most well-known picture is probably the smash-hit musical filled with some of the most memorable songs in The Sound of Music. He also has a major supporting role in the Terry Gilliam directed trippy sci-fi thriller, 12 Monkeys. We also discuss two movies where he landed Oscar nominations in the Ridley Scott directed based on true events All the Money in the World and the picture about the last year in the life of Leo Tolstoy in The Last Station. Plummer had a long and successful career, and we are only giving you a small snapshot. It was great being able to celebrate a movie legend and we had a blast talking about his movies. We really hope you love listening to it, and if you do, please help us out by spreading the word about us on social media. Childish Loves (W. W. Norton) Novelist Ben Markovits will read and sign the third and final entry is his critically acclaimed trilogy of novels surrounding the life of Lord Byron. "This story-within-a-story-within-a-story poses questions about the very nature of fiction." --Booklist "I've been a keen reader of this unfolding trilogy, in its totality a work of high intelligence and canny storytelling. . . . With Childish Loves, his concluding novel, Markovits reaches well beyond the usual confines of historical fiction, breaking the boundaries of the genre, in a moving finale that raises this trilogy to a level of artfulness that deserves a wide audience and deep appreciation." --Jay Parini, author of The Last Station and The Passages of H.M. Benjamin Markovits grew up in Texas, London and Berlin. He left an unpromising career as a professional basketball player to study the Romantics. Since then he has taught high-school English, edited a left-wing cultural magazine, and written essays, stories and reviews for, among other publications, the New York Times, the Guardian, the London Review of Books and the Paris Review. His novels include The Syme Papers, Either Side of Winter, Imposture, and A Quiet Adjustment. Markovits has lived in London since 2000 and is married with a daughter and a son. He teaches creative writing at the Royal Holloway, University of London.

Love at first sight can be as dangerous as it is exciting, and the sme goes for love at first screening. I fell hard and heedlessly for a film called An Education, which happened to be the first of 14 films I managed to see in the course of three movie-besotted days at the Telluride Film Festival over Labor Day weekend...
