Leaders need to be self-aware, able to make effective decisions, and prepared to grow their network to succeed in their careers. Laurie Baedke joins me to talk about how she helps build high-performance teams and keeps leaders at the top of their games. Laurie transitioned from a background in healthcare administration to self-employment by helping physicians create their own clinics. She developed her own career even further and now works as a speaker, educator, and author. Laurie is also the host of The Growth Edge Podcast. Laurie starts by explaining how she grew her own business through referrals. She is the perfect example of your network being your net worth. We also talk about how women face a double-bind at many points in their careers. Laurie explains why she started to dial back her personality depending on who her audience is. As women, we’re often told to hide aspects of ourselves and it is absolutely infuriating. Yet, there are times when toning it down can be beneficial in our careers. Making effective decisions is part of what being a good leader entails. But it’s not only about saying yes - your no can be just as important and impactful. And, even more than this, it’s knowing what your decision is that makes the most difference. Laurie shares why “hard” is simply an expected aspect of the entrepreneurial journey. She gives some examples of her own learned experiences that have been humbling for her. We all have them and sharing these experiences is vital for ours and other’s growth. You already know what a big believer in having a mentor is. Laurie confirms this when she talks about how many mentors she has and what roles they’ve played in her career. For Laurie, it’s about curating her circle to be the most supportive and effective - and playing that role for other women. How are you growing an effective circle? What learned experiences are the most humbling for you? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   In This Episode: Why your network is truly your net worth How women are faced with a double-bind in their career Why leaders need to know their audience and dial back their personality when it’s appropriate How you can make more effective decisions Why hard is part of the entrepreneurial journey How your learned experiences can be very humbling Why you should make mentors a consistent source in your career How you can start to curate your circle   Quotes: “As leaders, we need to be self-aware and we need to understand where certain attributes are an asset to us and where they can be a liability to us.” (9:00) “The more that you have clarity on who you are and what you need, the more that you can either be the leader that you needed and attract people around you who you find community with or intentionally seeking out those people who you learn from their journey.” (21:28) “When you are giving to someone several steps behind you the things that you were given is so meaningful and validating.” (31:04)   Links Listen to The Growth Edge Podcast Find Laurie Baedke Online Find Laurie Baedke on Twitter | LinkedIn | Vimeo Find Dr. Cortney Baker Online Follow Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Subscribe to Women in Business on Apple Podcasts   Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start? In this episode of MGMA Insights, we’re joined by Laurie Baedke, Director of Healthcare Leadership at Creighton University. Baedke is an author, speaker, educator, mentor, and expert on emotional intelligence and leadership development, among other topics. Don’t quite have time to listen to the entire episode? No worries. We’ve compiled a handful of highlights from Baedke’s interview for your convenience: • (9:17) “There are so many opportunities to serve and lead — and if you’re a non-clinician leader, if you’re a clinician leader, if you’re a physician leader who’s listening to this and you’re feeling called to lead, but you don’t know because you don’t feel like you look like anyone else that you see leading, my call to action to you is to really look internal first and assess what drives you, what motivates you, what work do you feel most called toward.” • (16:46) “In leadership, we know that one of the leader’s jobs is that we can’t do each of the individual functions, but to set the expectation, to cast the vision, to be able to help to set a culture and then reinforce it, that’s not just something you do once a year or once when someone joins your team and then you never do it again … it is something that has to be reinforced and consistently visited.” Here are some links and references related to this week’s show: * Why Emotional Intelligence is Important For Healthcare (bit.ly/2qot6fz) * Self-awareness leads to improved leadership skills and career development (bit.ly/2IBFToY) * The Psychology of Leadership Theories: Trait or Learned? This podcast shares the habits and practices of peak performers and top leaders, from many walks of life; physicians, senior executives, entrepreneurs, and academics. And from every season, from the seasoned and sage to those emerging leaders and rising rock stars. All who are blazing trails and shining a light for others. Mentoring has helped form Laurie Baedke into the leader that she is today, and it continues to play a crucial role in her life. Not only do mentors keep guiding Laurie in her personal and professional development, but as a mentor herself, she also savors the opportunities she has to turn around and counsel, exhort, and encourage others — emerging leaders and rising stars in diverse disciplines and fields. Laurie is quick to point out that there’s an art to building mentoring relationships — and it starts with not asking for a mentoring relationship. It may sound counterintuitive, but taking the long view — planting seeds now and looking to harvest in the distant future — may be one of the best things you can do to nurture and build strong mentoring relationships. Noting that there’s no “fairy godmother,” she says it’s up to us to equip ourselves to be successful leaders. One way to do this is to think outside the “prototypical mentor” image and the potentially limiting confines of your own network when seeking to broaden your mentoring experiences. Goal-oriented by nature, Laurie acknowledges the dangers lining the path of a leader who fails to take the time to clarify values and practice discernment in choosing goals. Other factors Laurie sees as helpful in supercharging your growth as a leader include avoiding the comparison trap, being open to honest feedback on blind spots, and seeing strengths-based assessment tools for what they actually are — a jumping off point for getting to really know yourself.

This podcast shares the habits and practices of peak performers and top leaders, from many walks of life; physicians, senior executives, entrepreneurs, and academics. And from every season, from the seasoned and sage to those emerging leaders and rising rock stars. All who are blazing trails and shining a light for others. Today Josh White joins the show and interviews Growth Edge’s host, Laurie Baedke — speaker, author, mentor, podcast host, Creighton University faculty member, wife, and mother — who brings to the world a strong sense of initiative, a drive for excellence, a desire to serve that she says is “ingrained” into her DNA, and a passion for leadership. Hospital VP at the age of 22, Laurie has been drawn to leadership for as long as she can remember. Her natural affinity for leading, Laurie humbly notes, arises in large part from being surrounded by exemplary leaders throughout her life, not the least of whom is her own father, a man whose example taught Laurie the invaluable lesson that serving others brings rewards that can’t be bought. Her diverse career path, from hospital administrator to entrepreneur, also has played a role in helping Laurie become the strong, confident leader that she is today. Laurie believes it’s essential for leaders to view leadership as the gift that it is (service to others), to push themselves out of their comfort zones, and to approach their professional relationships like you would the art of building a long-lasting fire — patiently, lovingly, and with an eye to the future. Being a good steward of time, attention, resources and, most importantly, other people is also crucial.
