Send us a textToday's episode is about something that's often misunderstood in medical groups—but is more critical than ever: your brand.Branding isn't just for Madison Avenue. It's not just for Nike, Apple, or national hospital chains. In today's healthcare landscape, branding is a core part of your strategy. It's how patients find you, how talent decides to join you—or not—and how your community understands who you are and what you stand for.Let's set the record straight right at the top: branding isn't about logos or color schemes. It's about trust. It's about identity. And it's about the reputation you earn, both in your clinical work and in how your organization shows up every single day.And in a world where patients and top providers have more choices than ever, your brand may be your biggest untapped asset. So today, we're diving into why your reputation is no longer just a byproduct of your work—it is the work, and how you can intentionally build a brand that not only attracts patients but brings in aligned, mission-driven team members too. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Send us a textToday we're going to talk about something that's become more than just a buzzword—it's become a mandate.Innovate or die. That might sound dramatic, but in healthcare, it's reality. With rapidly shrinking margins, increasing administrative burdens, staffing shortages, and an ever-changing technological landscape, standing still is the fastest way to fall behind. And yet, so many medical groups are still relying on outdated processes, inefficient systems, and legacy thinking.Today, we're exploring three companies that are shaking things up—in a good way. These aren't just startups with cool logos. These are game-changing platforms solving very real problems that medical groups face every day. We'll look at Beginly Health, which is completely reimagining physician recruitment with a platform that functions more like a dating app than a traditional recruiter. Then we'll turn to Neon Health, an AI-driven solution that tackles one of the biggest bottlenecks in care delivery—prior authorizations. And finally, we'll look at Rivet Health, a powerful denial management tool that's helping revenue cycle teams stop leaving money on the table. We've worked with each of these companies, and they all have innovative leadership teams, and smart solutions for medical groups. Send us a textIn this episode, I am joined by Kristi Olsen, Founder & Chief Strategy Officer at Beginly Health, an innovative new digital platform for physician recruitment. Kristi has a wealth of knowledge in the physician recruitment space, having successfully recruited hundreds of physicians for a regional health system for the first many years of her career. This episode is critical, as recruitment is one of the things we hear repeatedly from administrators, physician owners and CEO's as a pain point. Kristi and I discuss the use of technology in recruitment, the demographics and communication styles of the generation of physicians coming out of residency now, and how medical groups can position themselves to be successful with recruiting and retaining high quality physicians. Send us a textToday we're getting serious about something that silently chips away at your revenue, frustrates your staff, and leaves your bottom line looking weaker than it should be: claim denials.Because here's the truth: the average practice loses thousands—sometimes hundreds of thousands or even millions—each year to preventable denials. But these aren't just billing department headaches. They're indicators of broken processes that are costing you real money. And, in many cases, physician owners are completely unaware of how much money their practice is actually losing. We see a lot of groups where the billing team is resigned to having to write off claims, rather than doing the work to create systems and workflows to maximize collections. Billers are either tired, overworked, or simply lazy, and wind up quietly writing off thousands (if not millions) of dollars because it all seems too difficult, or they're not incentivized to figure it out.Don't get me wrong – the insurance industry is incredibly complex, and billing rules and denial reasons frequently seem completely illogical. Many of them are. And, I would assert that as a hard-working physician, you should still get paid. So, in today's episode, we're going to walk through the top 5 most common reasons your claims get denied. Then we'll look at operational fixes for each one—concrete changes you can make in your practice to stop the revenue leaks. I'll also estimate how much your practice can recoup by addressing each issue. From there, we'll talk about what it takes to build a high-performing billing team with strong leadership and standardized workflows. And finally, we'll talk KPIs—the key metrics you should be watching—and wrap up with some ideas for incentive plans that will keep your revenue cycle team motivated and focused. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Send us a textToday's topic hits home for just about every medical practice out there: EMRs. They're the systems we love to hate—and sometimes just outright hate. But here's the thing: many practices are sitting on a goldmine and don't even realize it. Instead of scrapping your current EMR and spending hundreds of thousands of dollars switching, what if you could get a major upgrade simply by using what you already have? Many medical groups only use about 30–40% of their EMR's capabilities. That means up to 70% of the tools you need to work smarter, not harder, are already right there—waiting for you to harness them. Today, we're diving into the steps you can take to give your EMR a full makeover, optimize both your business office and clinical workflows, and most importantly, get you and your team out of the EMR quicksand and back to focusing on patient care. Send us a textWelcome back to the podcast where we dig into the business realities of medical practice—from strategy to staffing to leadership and beyond. If you're part of a medical group that's ever been through a merger—or even just considered one—today's episode is going to hit close to home. We're diving into a topic that doesn't always make the due diligence checklist, but it absolutely determines the long-term success or failure of any group merger: culture. You've probably heard the old Harvard Business Review quote: Culture eats strategy for lunch. That line's been floating around boardrooms for decades now. And it's never been more relevant than in healthcare—especially when two or more medical groups merge.Because here's the truth: You can have the best financials, a perfect legal structure, a slick shared EHR, and a promising growth strategy. But if the cultures of the merging groups don't align—or worse, actively clash—none of that matters. Your strategy won't survive the day-to-day behavior of people who don't trust each other, don't communicate well, and don't feel seen in the new reality. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Send us a textToday we're diving into a topic that's often whispered about—but rarely addressed head-on. In every medical group, there's a silent script running behind the scenes. One that influences decisions, leadership roles, and even day-to-day operations. It's not in your bylaws. It's not in your policy manual. But it definitely impacts your group's future. We're talking about the politics of practice. The power dynamics. The unspoken rules of leadership that determine who really holds the keys in your organization. Understanding these dynamics isn't about manipulation—it's about mastering the art of influence, alignment, and strategic leadership. Because here's the truth: ignoring the political landscape of your group doesn't make you noble. It makes you vulnerable. So in this episode, we're going to unpack: What office politics actually look like in the context of medicine. The high cost—financial and cultural—of not understanding how the game is played. Why medical groups often have a unique cocktail of big egos and low EQ. And most importantly, how to lead in a way that cuts through the noise and creates a culture free of political mayhem. Send us a textYou get what you measure. That's the truth—whether we're talking about healthcare, business, or even personal habits. In medical group management, this couldn't be more important. The KPIs you choose to track will inevitably shape your decisions, your focus, and the behavior of your teams. Measure the right things, and you'll drive alignment, efficiency, and growth. Measure the wrong things—or worse, measure nothing at all—and you'll find yourself making decisions in the dark.Today, we're diving deep into the world of KPIs—Key Performance Indicators—and what you should really be tracking in your medical group. Send us a textWelcome to this episode, where we're diving deep into a topic that could make or break the future of your private practice: financial strategy. If you're a physician, practice manager, or administrator trying to navigate shrinking reimbursements, rising costs, and the ever-changing healthcare landscape, this episode is for you. We're going to talk about real financial solutions to help private practices stay independent—because here's the truth: The cost of not addressing your financial health is enormous. It doesn't just impact your revenue; it affects your staff, your reputation, and the overall well-being of your team. Too many practices wait until they're in crisis mode before taking a hard look at their financial strategy. But by then, options are limited. Physicians end up overworked, employees burn out, and the patient experience suffers. The best time to plan for financial sustainability is before you're forced to—and that's exactly what we're going to tackle today. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Send us a textToday, we're tackling one of the biggest stressors in medical practice ownership—cash flow instability. If you've ever found yourself wondering why your revenue fluctuates so much, why some months feel like you're drowning in expenses while others feel just fine, or why no matter how hard you work, the financial security of your practice always seems uncertain—this episode is for you. Here's the hard truth: many medical groups are riding a financial rollercoaster, completely at the mercy of insurance reimbursements, seasonal slowdowns, and shifting regulations. And the worst part? Most physicians were never taught how to avoid it. They went to medical school to learn how to practice medicine—not run a business. But the good news? There are practical solutions that can stabilize cash flow, reduce financial stress, and ensure a thriving, resilient practice. And it all starts with diversifying your revenue streams. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Send us a textWelcome to today's episode, where we're going to talk about something that isn't fun to think about but is absolutely essential if you own or manage a medical practice: internal controls to prevent embezzlement. Now, before you think, “Oh, that's not something I need to worry about,” let me hit you with some numbers. The Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) estimates that 83% of medical practices will experience employee theft at some point. Eighty-three percent. That means if you own or manage a practice, the odds are not in your favor. The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners reports that the median loss in healthcare fraud cases is $100,000, and many of these thefts go unnoticed for years—sometimes a decade or more. Let's put that in perspective. Imagine working hard every day, treating patients, managing staff, and keeping your practice running, only to find out that over the years, a trusted employee has been skimming money right out from under you. It happens all the time. And it happens to smart, successful, well-run practices. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Send us a textToday, we're talking about something that affects every medical practice, yet often goes unaddressed: trust—or more specifically, the trust deficit between patients and their healthcare providers.Trust is the foundation of healthcare. Patients trust us with their health, their fears, and sometimes even their lives. But what happens when that trust starts to erode? What's the cost of not addressing a growing sense of skepticism among patients? And why do so many physicians and practice leaders avoid confronting these issues? We'll break it all down today. We're going to explore how a trust deficit develops, the hidden financial and emotional costs of ignoring it, and most importantly, what you can do to rebuild and sustain trust in your practice. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Send us a textIf you're feeling like your team is running on fumes, drowning in inefficiencies, and barely keeping up with the daily demands of patient care, you're not alone. The challenge of balancing efficiency with staff well-being is real. But here's the thing: optimizing workflows isn't just about working faster—it's about working smarter. A well-run practice doesn't just happen. It's designed. And when workflows are neglected, the damage is real—burned-out employees, frustrated patients, lost revenue, and a practice that feels chaotic instead of controlled. Too often, physicians and administrators assume that inefficiencies are just “part of the job” or that fixing them will take more effort than just pushing through. But the truth is, inefficient workflows are costing your practice—financially, emotionally, and operationally. The good news? It doesn't have to be this way. In today's episode, we're breaking down why poorly designed workflows are tolerated when they should be completely rethought. We'll dive into the hidden costs of inefficiency, the impact on patient care and staff morale, and, most importantly, the solutions—because you can design a practice that runs smoothly without running your team into the ground. Send us a textWelcome to this episode of the Medical Money Matters podcast. I'm so glad you're here, because today we're diving into a topic that impacts every medical practice—whether you're a solo provider or part of a large group. Patient retention. If you've ever wondered why patients leave, what it costs your practice when they do, or how to build a loyal following in a competitive market, you're in the right place. Here's the reality: healthcare has changed. Patients have changed. Today, patients treat their medical care much like any other commodity. They'll switch providers at the slightest provocation—maybe a rude receptionist, a long wait time, or even just a slightly more convenient option down the street. And when they leave, the costs can be enormous—not just financially, but emotionally. A revolving door of patients can wear down your staff, damage your reputation, and even hurt the overall wellbeing of your team. But here's the good news: it doesn't have to be this way. You can build loyalty. You can create an environment where patients stay, not because they have to, but because they want to. And when you do, it benefits everyone—your patients, your team, and your practice. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today, we're diving into a topic that's transforming the way healthcare practices grow and thrive: the digital front door. In a world where convenience and technology reign supreme, staying ahead of the curve isn't just about embracing change; it's about survival. Patients today expect seamless, efficient interactions with their healthcare providers, and the costs of not keeping up with these expectations can be enormous—financially, reputationally, and even in terms of team morale.Let's start by exploring the costs of falling behind. Imagine this: a patient tries to book an appointment with your clinic. They navigate a clunky website, struggle to find the right contact information, and after 15 minutes of frustration, they give up and move on to another provider who offers online scheduling. You've just lost a potential patient before they even stepped through the door. These kinds of inefficiencies add up, and over time, they can erode your practice's bottom line. But it's not just about money. Practices that rely on outdated processes often experience a cascade of negative consequences. Staff members become overwhelmed, trying to compensate for inefficient systems with manual workarounds. Morale dips, turnover increases, and the overall patient experience suffers. A disorganized practice leads to longer wait times, missed follow-ups, and dissatisfied patients who are quick to share their negative experiences online. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today, we're going to tackle an issue that's been a thorn in the side of so many practice owners and administrators: hiring, and not only hiring, but hiring your dream team!Let me guess—you've said it before, maybe even this week: “It's so hard to find good help these days.” It's a sentiment we hear constantly, and one that can feel incredibly frustrating. Staffing challenges can lead to burnout, inefficiencies, and even affect patient care. But here's the thing: What if we could shift that narrative? What if, instead of lamenting how difficult hiring is, we focused on building a high-performance dream team?Imagine a team that's skilled, motivated, and aligned with your practice's mission. A team that not only reduces your stress but elevates your practice's reputation and makes your patients feel cared for in every interaction. That's the goal we're aiming for today. By the end of this episode, you'll have a roadmap to take recruiting to the next level, overcome common obstacles, and start building a team that's more than just functional—it's exceptional. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Compensation isn't just about money—it's about value, recognition, and culture. It's no wonder it's one of the most emotionally charged topics in any medical group. Today's topic is one that often stirs strong emotions: physician compensation. Designing an effective pay model is one of the most challenging tasks for any practice leader. Why? Because pay isn't just a number on a paycheck—it's deeply tied to how we view our contributions, our worth, and our role within the group. For administrators and CEOs, tinkering with compensation plans can feel like stepping into a minefield. It's no exaggeration to say that changing pay structures is often a career-limiting move. The stakes are high, and missteps can alienate staff, create resentment, or even lead to turnover. Yet, despite the challenges, compensation is one of the most powerful tools a group has to align behavior with its goals, build a cohesive culture, and drive growth. In this episode, we'll explore why compensation is such a sensitive issue, how leaders can thoughtfully approach changes, and what it means to design a plan that reflects your group's culture and values. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today, we're exploring a topic that's top-of-mind for many practice leaders: workforce optimization. Specifically, how can strategies like offshoring, artificial intelligence, and robotic process automation help you future-proof your workforce while driving down costs and increasing efficiency? Did you know that workforce costs account for nearly 60% of total expenses in most medical practices? What if there was a way to cut those costs while improving efficiency? Here's the reality: in most medical practices, workforce costs account for the majority of expenses. Salaries, benefits, overtime—it all adds up fast. But what if there were ways to significantly reduce those costs while still delivering excellent care and support to your patients? That's exactly what we're going to explore today. Today, we're diving into one of the most transformative changes in healthcare: the shift to value-based care. It's not just a buzzword—it's a movement that's reshaping how medical practices operate, get reimbursed, and deliver care. Picture this: a tale of two clinics in the SAME city. One is thriving under a value-based care model, consistently earning incentives and providing excellent patient outcomes. The other is stuck in the old fee-for-service world, struggling to maintain financial stability, with overworked staff and declining patient satisfaction and declining reimbursement. The difference? One embraced change; the other resisted it. The truth is, value-based care isn't going away. It's the future of healthcare, and failing to adapt doesn't just cost money—it can harm your team, your reputation, and your long-term viability. Today, we're going to explore why this shift is so important, the risks of ignoring it, and how practices of any size can successfully transition to a value-based model. Today, we're talking about a discipline that every practice needs but too few truly master—budgeting. Think of your budget as the GPS of your practice's finances. Without it, you're driving blind, hoping to reach your destination but constantly at risk of wrong turns, delays, or running out of gas altogether. A budget is more than numbers on a spreadsheet. It's the roadmap for your practice, helping you prioritize resources, stay financially stable, and make smart, informed decisions. Let's start by exploring why a budget is so critical and how it can guide your practice like a GPS guides your car. When you're using a GPS, you know your destination, you know the best route to take, and, just as importantly, you're warned when you veer off course. That's what a budget does for your practice. It sets clear financial goals, outlines how to get there, and helps you course-correct when things don't go as planned. One key tool for staying on track is a monthly financial review with your board or leadership team. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today's topic is one I know will resonate with many of you: the paradox of needing to spend money to make money. It's a concept that's often discussed in the business world, but it can feel especially challenging in the context of a medical practice. Why? Because for most physicians, business training wasn't a part of the curriculum in medical school. And yet, you're expected to make significant financial decisions that could affect not only the practice's bottom line but also patient care and team morale. So, how do you navigate this? How do you decide when to spend, how much to spend, and whether an investment is truly worth it? Today, we'll break that down. We'll explore some critical financial tools, such as break-even analysis and return on investment calculations, discuss the costs of capital, and walk through a real-world case study of an OB/GYN group making a big purchase decision. By the end of this episode, I hope you'll feel more confident about approaching these decisions in your own practice. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! In this episode, we're tackling an issue that every medical group, big or small, has faced: managing competing priorities while staying true to your strategic plan. This topic hits home for so many of us because the very nature of healthcare—fast-paced, dynamic, and unpredictable—makes it difficult to juggle everything effectively. But what happens when you're also trying to stay aligned with a strategic vision? For medical groups, managing competing priorities can be especially challenging because we're not just dealing with external pressures, but also the internal dynamics of physician leadership teams. Every leader comes with their own perspectives, ideas, and passion projects. And often, each person feels like their idea is the one that deserves time, attention, and resources. This makes sense—physicians are problem-solvers by nature. They see an issue and want to fix it. But when every idea feels urgent, and every project is deemed critical, how do you decide what truly deserves a place on the agenda? We'll explore how to keep your strategic plan alive and actionable, manage new priorities as they arise, and create an organizational culture that prioritizes focus without stifling innovation. By the end of this episode, you'll have tools to manage competing priorities without derailing your strategic plan—or your leadership team. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today, we're diving into a critical topic that's only becoming more urgent as cyber threats grow: Is Your Cyber Incident Response Plan Up to Snuff? Now, if you're a physician running or managing a practice, you might think cybersecurity isn't something you need to worry about daily. Think back to March of 2024, which saw the Change Healthcare Cyberattack. You may be thinking, “Change is a large organization, and I don't have to worry as much as they do.” But in today's environment, all healthcare practices are prime targets for cyberattacks, and a lack of preparation can have devastating consequences. In fact, according to recent studies, the healthcare sector has one of the highest rates of cyberattacks among all industries, with massive financial and reputational impacts following even a single breach. So today, we're going to cover the essentials of creating a solid Cyber Incident Response Plan—or CIRP for short—and why every practice, from small solo operations to large multi-physician groups, needs a plan in place. We'll talk about the unique vulnerabilities that come with running a healthcare practice, especially as it grows, and the serious fallout that can follow a cyber incident. I'll also offer some guidance on building a strong cybersecurity policy and show you how to protect your practice, your patients, and ultimately, your reputation. Today, we're diving into a topic that might be affecting your practice more than you realize: Is Your Office Manager Living the Peter Principle? Now, you might be wondering—what is the Peter Principle? And how could it apply to my medical practice? Let's break it down. The Peter Principle is a concept first described by Dr. Laurence J. Peter in his 1969 book, The Peter Principle: Why Things Always Go Wrong. It states that employees in a hierarchy tend to rise to their "level of incompetence." In other words, they get promoted based on their performance in their current role until they reach a position where they're no longer effective. In the context of a medical practice, this principle can have significant repercussions. Picture your Office Manager, someone who has been with your practice for years. They've handled scheduling, billing, and HR—wearing multiple hats as your practice grew from just a couple of physicians to a bustling team. But as the demands increased, their skill set may not have evolved as quickly. Suddenly, they're managing tasks beyond their capabilities, struggling with strategic planning, advanced budgeting, or navigating complex regulations. That's the Peter Principle at play. Today's topic is one that can be hard to think about but is crucial for anyone managing a practice: embezzlement. We're calling today's episode “Meet the Four Embezzlers Lurking in Plain Sight: A Guide for Savvy Physicians.” Why focus on this? Well, physician practices have unique vulnerabilities that make them especially appealing targets for embezzlers, and the impact of financial theft goes far beyond just the dollars lost. Imagine this: a small family medicine practice, tight-knit team, trusted office manager who's been with the clinic for years. But behind the scenes, small amounts of money are disappearing month by month. Sometimes, it's cash payments that never make it to the deposit, or maybe the credit card bills include strange charges that no one noticed—until it's too late. By the time the theft is discovered, thousands of dollars are gone, patient trust is damaged, and morale among staff hits rock bottom. For more than 82% of practices, unfortunately, this story isn't hypothetical. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today we're thrilled to bring you a very special episode. This marks our 100th episode! Yes, we've hit a milestone, and I just want to take a moment to thank all of you, our loyal listeners, for tuning in, sharing feedback, and helping us grow this incredible community of healthcare professionals and administrators. It's been an amazing journey, filled with insightful conversations and plenty of learning along the way. And on that note, given that we're here in our 100th episode, we are drawing some timeless wisdom from Benjamin Franklin. You've probably heard the old saying, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” That quote is attributed to him, and it holds as much relevance today as it did back then—especially when it comes to running a successful medical group. Now, while Franklin may have been talking about fire prevention, the message is clear: It's always better—and often more cost-effective—to prevent problems before they arise rather than scrambling to fix them after the fact. And that's what we're going to explore today—how proactive, preventive strategies can protect your practice, improve patient outcomes, and ultimately save you money and stress in the long run. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Given that this is Episode 99, which is a number that signifies growth and the ending of one era and the beginning of another, it seemed an opportune time to talk about recognizing the signs of growth in your practice and how to plan for it effectively. As healthcare providers, we often find ourselves so focused on patient care that we may overlook the subtle indicators of growth within our own practices. Whether you're a solo practitioner or part of a large group, understanding when your practice is on the verge of growth can be a game changer. In this episode, we'll explore three distinct growth stages: small practices with one to three physicians, medium-sized practices with eight to ten physicians, and larger practices with twenty-five or more physicians. Each stage presents its own set of challenges and opportunities. Our goal today is to help you recognize these growth signs early on and equip you with practical strategies for operational, financial, and leadership considerations that are crucial for physician owners. Welcome to episode 98.6, where we explore an idea that runs deeper than just managing patient care or handling office logistics. We're going to talk about what it means to be “normal” in a medical practice. Now, most of us are familiar with the concept of 98.6°F as the “normal” temperature for a healthy human body. It's become a standard—something we rely on to tell us that things are functioning the way they should be. But when it comes to running a medical practice, what does “normal” look like? Is there even such a thing? Just like our bodies, a medical practice has its own baseline—its own “normal” temperature, so to speak. It's the state where things are steady, functional, and predictable. That doesn't mean everything is perfect, but the systems and people in place keep things running smoothly. For a practice, this might mean staff working efficiently, patients coming in and out on schedule, systems operating as expected, and the day's flow moving along without too many surprises. But just like in our bodies, even a small disruption—something as simple as a glitch in the scheduling system or a team member calling out sick—can throw off the balance. Welcome to today's episode, where we're diving deep into one of the most important but often overlooked aspects of running a successful medical group: building a positive, intentional culture. You've probably heard the phrase, “Culture eats strategy for lunch”—and if you haven't, you're about to understand why that idea is so critical, especially in healthcare. Now, what do we mean by culture in a medical group setting? It's not just about the company picnics, coffee in the break room, or inspirational quotes on the wall. As we reviewed in episodes 27 and 36, culture is the shared values, behaviors, and communication styles that shape the way everyone in your organization works together, makes decisions, and ultimately cares for patients. In short, culture is the how behind everything you do. Even the best strategy for improving patient care, cutting costs, or expanding services can collapse under the weight of a toxic or unintentional culture. Why? Because culture sets the tone for how effectively—or ineffectively—a strategy will be implemented. If a medical group has a strong culture of accountability, trust, and respect, new initiatives tend to thrive. Today, we're diving into a topic that doesn't always get the attention it deserves: trusted advisors and why your practice needs them. Running a medical practice isn't just about seeing patients—it's also about making smart business decisions. And sometimes, those decisions require expert advice. So, whether you're just starting your practice or you've been in the game for years, having the right advisors by your side can be the difference between struggling to stay afloat and thriving. We talk about what trusted advisors do, why they're essential, and how to build a team of advisors who truly understand the healthcare landscape. At its core, a trusted advisor is someone who brings deep expertise and offers strategic guidance tailored to your specific needs. Unlike a vendor or a consultant who might just complete a task for you, a trusted advisor is more of a long-term partner. They help you anticipate challenges, seize opportunities, and avoid mistakes. Today we're exploring a topic that every practice has to confront at some point: should you handle critical services in-house or outsource them? It's a key decision that can make a huge difference in how your practice operates, the quality of care you provide, and, of course, your bottom line. And, a note about today's episode - as a consultant, it would be easy for me to say, “Outsource everything!” As that's the way we make our money. But, I can see that in many cases, outsourcing doesn't make sense, and I'm interested in an even-handed review of the pros and cons. We'll be breaking this down into a few key areas. First, we'll look at the services most commonly outsourced by medical practices. This includes IT, revenue cycle management, human resources, marketing, and more recently, fractional CFO services and even long-term leadership roles, like hiring a consulting group to provide ongoing management. After that, we'll compare the pros and cons of keeping these services in-house versus outsourcing them to external vendors or consultants. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today, we're going to explore a topic that's both financially lucrative and operationally challenging for physician practices: Workers' Compensation and Motor Vehicle Accidents, or MVA, as lines of business. Now, if you're a physician or an administrator managing a medical practice, you know that these two areas can represent significant revenue opportunities. But they also come with their own set of challenges—more paperwork, working with adjusters from various insurance companies, and longer collection times, to name just a few. In this episode, we're going to break down these challenges and discuss strategies to optimize your practice's financial performance when handling Workers' Compensation and MVA cases. We'll also compare these lines of business with traditional fee-for-service arrangements and explore how you can leverage them to maximize your practice's revenue. So, whether you're currently accepting Workers' Compensation and MVA cases or considering it, tune in. We've got a lot to cover. Today's topic is something every practice owner and administrator should be familiar with: Continuous Quality Improvement, or CQI, and the "alphabet soup" of improvement methodologies that come with it, like PDSA, Six Sigma, Lean, and FMEA. You might be thinking—great, more buzzwords. But the truth is, these concepts have the potential to make a huge impact on the way your practice operates. Whether you're trying to improve patient outcomes, streamline your operations, or reduce costs, CQI offers a structured, data-driven way to get there. And as physicians and healthcare leaders, you're already equipped with the skills to succeed using these methods. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today we're covering a topic that can transform the efficiency and effectiveness of your clinic: tech add-ons for your Electronic Medical Records system. When we select an EMR, we frequently assume that it will handle everything for us. And, as we “move in” and start to really use the product, we can identify some things it doesn't do.For this episode, we've drawn from some of the best-selling add-on products on the AthenaOne Marketplace, although most of these products integrate with multiple different EMR platforms. We'll be discussing their costs, benefits, and sharing case studies to highlight their best uses across various subspecialties. And, we should note that we don't have commercial relationships with any of these companies, they simply came up on our web search of best in class products. We hope that you'll find this thought provoking as you consider the functionality that is available out there today to enhance your EMR. Today we're diving into a topic that's sparking a lot of conversation in the healthcare community: the incorporation of retail components into outpatient clinics. We'll explore the traditional views that often see retail as "tacky," the benefits of adding retail services, and the opportunity costs of not setting them up. Let's get started! To begin, let's take a look at the traditional perspective on retail within clinic settings. Historically, many physicians have been wary of incorporating retail elements into their practices. The idea that retail is "tacky" has deep roots. Traditionally, the medical profession has emphasized a strict focus on patient care, viewing any commercial activity as potentially undermining the sanctity and trust inherent in the physician-patient relationship. This view is rooted in the belief that medicine should remain pure and untainted by commercial interests. Many physicians worry that introducing retail components might detract from their professional image. They fear that commercializing their practice could make it seem like profit is being prioritized over patient care. There's also the concern that retail might undermine patient trust—patients might question whether recommendations are truly in their best interest or simply a sales pitch. These traditional views can significantly impact clinic operations. By shunning retail, clinics limit their revenue streams and miss out on opportunities to enhance patient convenience and comprehensive care. In a competitive healthcare market, this hesitation can lead to stagnation and an inability to fully meet evolving patient expectations. Today we're diving into a fascinating and rapidly evolving topic: the impact of AI on outpatient medicine. In this episode, we'll explore how AI is changing the landscape of healthcare in the immediate and medium term, which subspecialties are likely to see the biggest changes, and where AI will make the most significant inroads over the next five years. Let's get started! To begin, let's talk about the immediate impact of AI on outpatient medicine. AI is already making waves in various healthcare settings, including outpatient clinics, by enhancing diagnostic accuracy, streamlining administrative tasks, and improving patient engagement. One of the most significant current applications of AI in outpatient settings is in diagnostic tools. For instance, AI-powered radiology and pathology tools can analyze medical images and tissue samples with remarkable accuracy, often matching or even surpassing human performance. These tools help clinicians detect diseases earlier and more accurately, leading to better patient outcomes. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! Today we're tackling an important decision for any clinic leader: deciding when to add another clinician to your group. Whether you're considering adding another physician or an Advanced Practice Provider (APP), this episode will guide you through the various considerations involved. We'll cover assessing the need for additional clinicians, financial considerations, and the operational impact. We talk about how to assess the need for additional clinicians in your clinic. Understanding whether it's the right time to expand your team is crucial for maintaining efficient operations and ensuring high-quality patient care. The initial step is to evaluate patient volume and demand. Are your current clinicians overwhelmed with the number of patients? Are your appointment slots fully booked weeks in advance? High patient wait times and appointment availability are clear indicators that your clinic might benefit from adding another clinician. Another important factor is analyzing clinician workload and burnout levels. If your current team is consistently working long hours and showing signs of stress and fatigue, it might be time to consider expanding your staff. Ensuring your clinicians have a manageable workload is essential for maintaining high-quality care and job satisfaction. Today we're exploring a crucial topic for clinic leaders: getting things done. We'll discuss practical hacks to boost efficiency and effectiveness, focusing on the art of delegating, mastering digital communication, and more. Whether you're a seasoned executive or new to a leadership role, these insights can help you streamline operations and improve your clinic's performance. To begin, let's talk about the art of delegating. Delegation is essential for any leader, but it's particularly critical in a clinical setting where the stakes are high, and time is often limited. So, what exactly is delegation? It's the process of assigning responsibility and authority to others to complete tasks or make decisions. Effective delegation can significantly enhance your productivity and the overall efficiency of your clinic. Many leaders struggle with delegation for various reasons, such as fear of losing control, lack of trust in their team, or simply being unsure of how to delegate effectively. However, understanding and overcoming these barriers is crucial. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop! In this episode, we're diving into a topic that's crucial for the health of any clinic: managing the toxic employee. We'll explore the costs of not dealing with toxic behavior, the damage it can do to your clinic's staff, reputation, and overall wellbeing, and why it's so often tolerated. Plus, we'll provide actionable solutions to create a culture free of toxic team members. First, let's talk about the financial costs of not addressing toxic behavior. When a clinic has a toxic employee, productivity takes a hit. Other team members may spend more time dealing with conflicts or avoiding the toxic individual, rather than focusing on their work. This leads to decreased efficiency and can severely impact your bottom line. Then there's the increased turnover. Good employees are less likely to stick around in an environment where toxic people are tolerated, meaning you'll spend more time and resources on hiring and training new staff. Plus, if the toxic behavior leads to workplace disputes, there could be significant legal costs involved. But it's not just about the money. Let's consider the reputational damage. Word travels fast, and if your clinic is known as a toxic workplace, it can hurt your reputation among patients and within the medical community. Negative reviews can deter potential patients, and it might become challenging to attract high-quality staff. Please Follow or Subscribe to get new episodes delivered to you as soon as they drop!
