These are just a few of the issues that many anesthesiologists and physicians face. Meanwhile, governments make ill-considered rules, cut funding, prevent fair and equitable negotiations, and non-physician providers continue to fight for greater authority to practice medicine without having attended medical school. A physician and anesthesiologist shortage emboldens them to feel entitled to greater independence. New residencies are being developed to counter this shortage, but how can they successfully navigate all the obstacles they may face? How do any of us try to make our practices, working conditions, or pay structures better?Organizations like the California Society of Anesthesiologists and others exist to support their members. They advocate, educate, collaborate, network, and elevate anesthesiologists throughout California. None of this work can be done without engaged and enthusiastic members.Join my guests today as they explain why they got involved with the CSA and why they think it is important for all members to do so.Dr. Newhide completed his Anesthesiology residency training at the University of Maryland Medical Center and a fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. With a strong commitment to serving the underserved, he returned to his home state of California to help found a new residency program in Stockton, CA. He is currently serving as the Residency Program Director at St. Joseph's Medical Center, helping to develop a new generation of anesthesiologists to serve the Central Valley.Dr. Klein is a fourth-year resident in anesthesiology at UCLA and serves as her residency program's ASA and CSA resident delegate. She will be completing her fellowship in Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Management at Duke University in the upcoming academic year. As a resident on a research track, she is involved in informatics and policy-related research on insurance utilization and physician payments. She plans to practice in a large academic setting so she can continue on her path as a physician-researcher while staying involved in the health policy space.Dr. Mariam Sarwary is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford and the Program Director for the Regional Anesthesia and Acute Pain Medicine Fellowship. She has been involved with the CSA since residency and currently sits on the organization's Board of Directors. Mariam also serves as a mentor for Stanford's Leadership Education in Advancing Diversity (LEAD) program and is a member of the GME Well-Being Committee.Dr. Christina Menor is a board-certified anesthesiologist in private practice in Los Angeles. She specializes in ambulatory, pediatric, and obstetric anesthesiology. Dr. Menor currently serves as the President of the California Society of Anesthesiologists. She co-authored an article that describes California survey data on medical titles. She is a member of Physicians Protecting Patients and is an active advocate for physician-led care and title transparency. She has been active with the CSA since residency.

Ever wonder why certain skills are in the Acrobatic Arts syllabus? In this episode, Sarah walks through two of them -- the cartwheel rebound and the roundoff -- and breaks down not just how to teach them, but why they're there in the first place. Spoiler: the cartwheel rebound isn't a roundoff progression. And understanding that changes how you teach it.About Sarah Reis In her early development Sarah split her time between gymnastics and dance then later got into circus work and competitive rock climbing. The combination of these skills led her to a performance career as a stunt double in the thriving Vancouver film scene. While enjoying a professional performance career she worked on various projects including cruiseship contracts, print, television, film and nightlife productions. Sarah has always felt it was important to continue her education and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology in 2006. After graduation Sarah started work as an artistic sport rehabilitation specialist in a Physiotherapy clinic during the day while teaching dance in the evening. At the clinic Sarah primarily designed return to training programs for injured artistic athletes.

 Sarah is a certified teacher in acrobatics through the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (CDTA) and is a level three coach in women's artistic gymnastics with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Sarah holds longstanding certificates with many established dance teacher, Pilates and fitness related organizations. Sarah eventually returned to school to study contemporary dance at Simon Fraser University and completed a second degree in Education. Sarah spent some time working in the school district, holding an official teaching license with the BC ministry of Education in the specialty of performing arts and physical education. In 2008 she completed her Master's degree in Human Performance Coaching Sciences from the University of Victoria where she researched in the field of athletic motor development and later developed the curriculum for the International Dance Teaching Standards teacher education program for developing dance educators. Sarah began her doctorate research in Leadership Education but has since switched her focus to Dance Medicine. Within her research Sarah is interested in AcroDance teaching methodology and recently presented at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. When not touring as a public speaker, Sarah is the director of a large dance competition and manages a physiotherapy clinic among other small businesses. Sarah has spent the last decade touring worldwide presenting at various universities, dance conventions and conferences and can also be seen live from Los Angeles with CLI Studios. With a strong creative pull Sarah has been choreographing AcroDance lines and productions for more than twenty years and continues to be passionate about student development when she is home and able to teach in her hometown. The trap? They are focusing on information instead of transformation.Why do so many moms follow the traditional school model? Now, this isn't traditional over thousands of years — it's just the last 150 years. Why do we follow it? Because it's what we know. We grew up on the conveyor belt. It feels comfortable because it's what we know, and we don't know where to go to get off it.The traditional system was built during the industrial revolution. What was its purpose? To train workers for factories. They needed people that could not think. They needed worker bees that would do what they were told. And let's be honest, that's really where our society is. Most people don't know how to think.Where This Model Came From — And Why It Was Never About Your ChildHorace Mann was an education reformer who helped popularize the Prussian model of school back in the 1800s. This is what Charlotte Mason was so totally opposed to. That model treated a child as if they were a container that you just poured bits of information into and then let them regurgitate it. And that's a lot of what we do today in a traditional school — whether that's a public school or a private school.Horace Mann's goal in moving this from Europe to America was uniformity, obedience, compliance, and efficiency. It was not leadership. It was not innovation. It was not freedom. They wanted to control society. Industrialists were pouring billions of dollars into the education system, and Horace Mann went right along with it.Homeschooling, if we do it a different way, gives us the freedom to pursue a completely different goal. And Christian homeschooling does the same thing — just with a faith-based foundation.What Is Leadership Education — And Why Does It Matter?Instead of asking what information should my child memorize — which is teaching our kids what to think, a checklist mentality that isn't even your checklist, it's someone else's — leadership education asks a completely different question: what kind of person is my child becoming?Do they have the tools of learning and the desire to learn anything they need? Leadership education, or freedom education, teaches our kids how to think instead of just what to think. That's what I wanted. I wanted my kids to know how to think critically, how to think in wisdom, and how to think biblically.We homeschooled for 10 years. Halfway through, I started with Charlotte Mason, then moved to classical and interspersed some unit studies. But then I found leadership education and I was all in — because I believe it integrates all the best things from different approaches. The best of Charlotte Mason, classical, the Christian principal approach, unit studies, delight-directed learning — all put together with the purpose to raise kids to lead.And y'all are like, "Well, my kids aren't going to be a leader." Well, they may not be CEO or mayor of the city, but they're probably going to have kids someday and they will need to lead their family.From Information to Transformation: A Shift in PerspectiveWhen we quit asking about information and we start looking at transformation, we make a shift — a shift to character, thinking, initiative, responsibility, and so much more.George Washington had little formal education. What shaped him the most was mentorship. Lord Fairfax helped shape George Washington as a man — full, well-rounded mentoring. Thomas Jefferson had George Wythe mentoring him. They were all there at the same time during the colonial period.And what were they using? Reading, being responsible at a young age, writing about it — Benjamin Franklin talks about that in his autobiography — and then discussing it. Read, write, discuss. This is how we can mentor young people to lead. These are the leadership qualities that allowed George Washington to lead a nation right in its very beginning.What You Can Do This WeekI'm just giving you the tip of the iceberg here. But what are some things you could do this week?Start asking your kids leadership-type questions. What do you think about that? Don't tell them what you think. Let them think. Too often, moms, we answer our own question and don't give them the opportunity to think. And they catch on — Mom's going to answer it anyway, so I don't have to think.Try: Why do you think that happened in the story? What would you have done if you were that person? These questions get them to think and open the door for discussion. Discussions grow thinkers.It's just one mindset shift that can bring instant clarity. Shift away from "did we finish the lesson?" — that's checklist productivity and it's not what you want — to "did my child grow today?" That is where they begin to take ownership of their own education, and you begin to take ownership of your homeschool instead of letting some curriculum tell you what to do.Growth might look like curiosity, deeper questions, moral insight, responsibility, perseverance, or even kindness to a sibling. There are a lot of ways that growth can look. In 2008 she completed her Master's degree in Human Performance Coaching Sciences from the University of Victoria where she researched in the field of athletic motor development and later developed the curriculum for the International Dance Teaching Standards teacher education program for developing dance educators. Sarah began her doctorate research in Leadership Education but has since switched her focus to Dance Medicine. Within her research Sarah is interested in AcroDance teaching methodology and recently presented at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. When not touring as a public speaker, Sarah is the director of a large dance competition and manages a physiotherapy clinic among other small businesses. Sarah has spent the last decade touring worldwide presenting at various universities, dance conventions and conferences and can also be seen live from Los Angeles with CLI Studios. With a strong creative pull Sarah has been choreographing AcroDance lines and productions for more than twenty years and continues to be passionate about student development when she is home and able to teach in her hometown. The combination of these skills led her to a performance career as a stunt double in the thriving Vancouver film scene. While enjoying a professional performance career she worked on various projects including cruiseship contracts, print, television, film and nightlife productions. Sarah has always felt it was important to continue her education and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Kinesiology in 2006. After graduation Sarah started work as an artistic sport rehabilitation specialist in a Physiotherapy clinic during the day while teaching dance in the evening. At the clinic Sarah primarily designed return to training programs for injured artistic athletes.Sarah is a certified teacher in acrobatics through the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (CDTA) and is a level three coach in women's artistic gymnastics with the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). Sarah holds longstanding certificates with many established dance teacher, Pilates and fitness related organizations. Sarah eventually returned to school to study contemporary dance at Simon Fraser University and completed a second degree in Education. Sarah spent some time working in the school district, holding an official teaching license with the BC ministry of Education in the specialty of performing arts and physical education. In 2008 she completed her Master's degree in Human Performance Coaching Sciences from the University of Victoria where she researched in the field of athletic motor development and later developed the curriculum for the International Dance Teaching Standards teacher education program for developing dance educators. Sarah began her doctorate research in Leadership Education but has since switched her focus to Dance Medicine. Within her research Sarah is interested in AcroDance teaching methodology and recently presented at the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science. When not touring as a public speaker, Sarah is the director of a large dance competition and manages a physiotherapy clinic among other small businesses. Sarah has spent the last decade touring worldwide presenting at various universities, dance conventions and conferences and can also be seen live from Los Angeles with CLI Studios. With a strong creative pull Sarah has been choreographing AcroDance lines and productions for more than twenty years and continues to be passionate about student development when she is home and able to teach in her hometown. Mr. Woodward began his interest in real estate renovations as a youth, working with his grandfather, father, and great-uncle doing handyman and maintenance services. He also studied architectural design in high school, taking first place at county and state-level housing design competitions. After graduation, he enrolled in the architectural design program at Miami-Dade Community college. He also purchased his first property and renovated it himself at just 20 years old. He then took his aspiration to become an architect to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl where he majored in Architecture and minored in African American Studies. After much consideration, the future graduate of Florida A&M University decided to change his major from architecture; though, he never lost his passion for the real estate profession. He eventually graduated with undergraduate degrees in History, Geography, and Secondary Education. He was able to complete the triple degree in 3.5 years. He also has a Masters Degree in Applied Social Science with a concentration in African American History and an Add-on in Educational Leadership. This was completed while engaging in an 18year career in the education-al system and investing in real estate. Mr. Woodward is currently pursuing his PhD in History and Humanities at Clark-Atlanta University. He has completed all of his coursework and his comprehensive exams. The dissertation is all that remains between now and graduation. Utilizing all of his prior knowledge and experience in real estate, Mr. Woodward was able to turn a hobby and part time residual income opportunity into an incorporated business. He also studied architectural design in high school, taking first place at county and state-level housing design competitions. After graduation, he enrolled in the architectural design program at Miami-Dade Community college. He also purchased his first property and renovated it himself at just 20 years old. He then took his aspiration to become an architect to Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, Fl where he majored in Architecture and minored in African American Studies. After much consideration, the future graduate of Florida A&M University decided to change his major from architecture; though, he never lost his passion for the real estate profession. He eventually graduated with undergraduate degrees in History, Geography, and Secondary Education. He was able to complete the triple degree in 3.5 years. He also has a Masters Degree in Applied Social Science with a concentration in African American History and an Add-on in Educational Leadership. Today's Guest Rebekah Taylor, M.A. CCC-SLP, is a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in Early Intervention (EI) and Complex Communication Needs (CCN) including Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Rebekah has enjoyed a rather diverse career background, from a child-care centre to the Anatomic Pathology department at Children's Hospital Los Angeles before beginning her career as an SLP. She draws upon every experience that has led her to this profession.  Throughout her work, Rebekah has developed a passion for supporting children and their families through what can sometimes be very emotional and frustrating experiences. She has completed the Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) program with USC's UCEDD and has worked in a variety of pediatric settings including an interdisciplinary clinic, private practice, and schools in the US, as well as in schools and clinics within the National Health Service in England.
