When we hide our rejections, we become small. When we talk about them, the rejections become small.  Today's special guest is Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, a trailblazer in both medicine and women's empowerment.  Dr. Shillcutt is a cardiac anesthesiologist at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the founder and CEO of Brave Enough, a community dedicated to empowering women. Along with being a researcher, speaker, author, wife, and mom of four, Dr. Shillcutt is an advocate for gender equity and making space for women in leadership roles. This conversation is a must-listen for anyone who's faced rejection and wants to turn it into an opportunity for growth and redirection.  Being rejected can propel you forward, if you choose to step out of shame, and instead learn to stand tall, embrace your journey, and keep moving forward with optimism. If you want to live a big and meaningful life, you will experience a lot of rejection. Rejection happens when you put yourself out there. When you stand out, you get cut down more often.  When you get cut down as “Tall Poppy”, you can grow back taller and stronger, but it takes self-compassion, mindfulness, patience, and support. Rejection doesn't usually reflect our abilities or our work; we can be the best, and still face setbacks, not get a role, or have a marriage fail.   Rejection is often not about you. It is also about fit, timing, and other people. It often means: "Not Yet, Not Here, or Not Now.” It can be a signal to course-correct and move toward something that aligns better with your true purpose. When we can learn to embrace rejection with curiosity, rather than internalizing it as a judgment of our worth, it can become a catalyst for growth and a life well-lived. High-achieving women often face criticism, resentment, and rejection. Welcome to Girls' Night! ​ Today, we're revisiting a conversation I had with my friend, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, on setting boundaries. ​ If you've been a Girls Night listener for a while now, this isn't the first time you're hearing me talk about boundaries. And it's because this has been a HUGE lesson for me. ​ I am historically bad at knowing what I want and what I need — at drawing lines and saying no. ​ And for the longest time, I was okay with that. (Maybe even a little bit proud of it?) ​ I like being helpful. I like being needed. I like feeling useful, capable, and strong. ​ For years I thought that this was the best way to love the people I love: To always put their needs above my needs, to say yes to everything, to give but never take, and to have everything that's mine be theirs without limit — whether it was my stuff, my space, my time, or my energy. ​ This is what I thought would lead to the healthiest, closest relationships. But over the last few years I've learned that the opposite is true. ​ Boundaries are an absolutely essential part of healthy relationships. They're an essential part of a healthy life, of a healthy US. ​ And that's what we're talking about here today. ​ Our guest, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, is a renowned cardiac anesthesiologist, professor, bestselling author and CEO and Founder of Brave Enough. Sasha is also a wife and a mother who has walked through seasons of loneliness, anxiety, and complete burnout. We all often struggle to ask for help. It's common to think that if we can't ask for help, it's a sign of weakness. But asking for help isn't a weakness. It's a strength. In this episode, I'm discussing what happens when we become aware that we need help and then ask for help.   How to Ask for Help Admit that you need help Be vulnerable enough to ask someone for help Accept the kindness offered   Get Vulnerable and Ask for Help It's difficult to ask for help. Putting yourself out there, admitting what you feel are weaknesses, and asking for help is such a vulnerable thing to do. But there is actually so much power in admitting you need a helping hand. If you're not sure where you might need to ask for help, I will encourage you to look for those areas of your life that feel a bit sticky. That feels difficult to you. On a day-to-day basis, where are the specific areas you can ask for a little bit more help? These are the areas where you could reach out and ask for help. Asking for help is not comfortable. But you have to ask yourself if you want to keep going the way you are, or whether you want to put the work in and change it. This often means asking for help.   What Happens When You Ask for Help When you ask someone else for help, you're not only helping yourself. You're helping show other people that it's okay to be vulnerable. That it's okay to open up and ask for help. In a way, it's giving the other person permission to be vulnerable. Asking someone for help lets them know that they can ask you for help if they need it.   Finally, I talk about how setting boundaries and saying how you would like others to treat you is also a way to ask for help. Ask people to treat you how you prefer to be treated. What feels uncomfortable when you ask for help? What's stopping you from doing it? If you are able to do it, how would your life be different? We need help.' It's amazing. It's not comfortable. It's not comfortable evaluating what we're constantly doing and putting our ego aside to say, ‘this isn't working. How can we come together?' It is not comfortable because we have to put it out there and say, ‘something's off here. Do we want to keep going on this way, or do we want to put the work in and change it?” [19:04] “If we can think about help less about ‘I can't do this on my own' and instead, ‘wow, look at the opportunity that I have to better myself more so I can create more connection, adventure, freedom, and peace, all those things that I want in my life. You need to start setting better boundaries. Boundaries help prevent burnout and resentment, even when you're doing something that you love. I'm joined by my friend, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, on the release of her new book, Brave Boundaries, to talk about the steps to take to start setting boundaries in your life: both with yourself and other people.   How to Set Boundaries Take a boundary inventory - write a list of everything you do Start from the bottom - stop doing things you don't like to do for free Move to the middle - stop doing paid things you don't like   About Dr. Sasha Shillcutt My friend, Dr. Sasha Shillcutt, has a new book that I think you would all find life-changing.  In her book Brave Boundaries, Sasha utilizes practical and powerful tools, concepts, and exercises, to invite you into an empowering and peaceful way of life. She shares personal and professional expertise on how you can overcome burnout and take back control of your time and your life by learning to set clear work-life boundaries.  She examines the hopeless cycle of self-criticism, the social expectation of what a woman “should” be, and the incessant drive to please. Then, she guides you down the path of discovering who you were created to be by helping you take a boundary inventory. I encourage you to purchase it HERE!   Set Boundaries to Avoid Burnout Dr. Sasha Shillcutt is here on the exciting release of her book, Brave Boundaries, to talk about why we, as women, need to start setting boundaries to avoid burnout. Sasha shares how she burned out in 2019 by doing the work she loves to do – I think this is so important to note. You can still burn out doing what you love to do. This is why it's vital that you set boundaries, especially if those boundaries are with yourself. I know all too well that when you love to do something, you might be way more flexible with your boundary. And this is what leads to burnout or resentment. What exactly is a boundary? Sasha says that a boundary is something that allows you to live your priorities and have your priorities match your calendar. This is both with yourself and with others.   Setting Boundaries with Others Not sure how to set your boundaries? Sasha says to start by writing a list, with your paid commitments and priorities at the top all the way down to what you do for free. Start setting boundaries from the bottom of your list and work your way up. It might be difficult to set boundaries with other people. You might experience something Sasha calls boundary backlash. She explains that this pushback on your boundaries usually comes from people who never thought about setting boundaries for themselves – you haven't done anything wrong if you've received boundary backlash from someone! We both agree that it's so special to find a friend who respects your boundaries with ease. These friends are like gold dust; I really feel like you can exhale around them. Hold onto these friends, and don't let them go! If you're struggling to set boundaries in your life, write down a list of everything you do like Sasha suggests. Start by setting a boundary with the bottom thing on your list. How does this feel? I found myself again, in 2019, right before the pandemic, totally burned out, realizing and wondering how I got to this place again. Instead of negative things burning me out, it was all these positive things.” [3:00] “Anything good in your life can become a drain on you and become toxic if you don't have boundaries around it.” [3:29] “We have to respect one another's boundaries. There are going to be people in your life that you literally have to tell a boundary to 100 times. It doesn't mean you're wrong or you're doing anything wrong; it just hasn't clicked in their brain. It has nothing to do with you.” [9:58] “The boundary backlash comes especially for people who never themselves thought, ‘well why can't I set boundaries?' These people are afraid of your empowerment, they're afraid of your agency. When you say that you're not doing that when other women said they would for free, you are showing your power, and that is offensive to people who don't have their power. You might get backlash. It's okay, it doesn't mean you've done anything wrong. Set the boundary, toughen up a little, you can handle backlash.” [11:59] “It doesn't matter how good you are at it; no one is going to pay you for work you're doing for free until you stop doing it. Find a group of supportive people who will lift you up and keep you going through the good and bad times. As a prolific speaker and lifelong advocate for improved wellness in medicine, she has given hundreds of talks both nationally and internationally on topics like conflict management and boundary setting.   In 2018, she founded the Women Physicians Wellness Conference—a 3-day event hosted in Aruba, Grand Cayman, and Amelia Island exclusively for women physicians--as a way of bringing them together to share their struggles and their strategies for success.   She believes that women are stronger together and wants to inspire them to find the courage, clarity, and community to succeed on their own terms, instead of someone else's.   The Power of a Community of Women Dr. Erica Howe opens up about her breast cancer diagnosis and how this impacted every aspect of her life. She explains how she was so nervous to tell anyone about her diagnosis, but that when she did open up, she received an outpouring of love and support from her community. It was her community coming together to support her through these dark days that kept her going. We are stronger together, always. Showing up for each other, whether to support through the hard times or help celebrate the good, is such an important part of sisterhood. This experience solidified Dr. Howe's decision to go to her Women Physicians Wellness Conference just a few short weeks after her surgery. She shares that while, at first, she wasn't able to participate in much of the exercise portion of the experience, she was eventually able to join us at the end of the trip.   Exercise Can Help You Recover from Illness Your health is the most important thing in your life. We all come to this realization sooner or later - and your baseline fitness will help determine how well you recover from surgery. Dr. Howe talks about how she is so over fad diets; she's all about lifestyle changes from now on. As Dr. Howe prepares for her next surgery, she's building up her fitness and wellness habits so that she can heal and recover quicker.  One motto that's really helped Dr. Howe, as well, is to only look to The Next Best Decision. This mindset has really helped her keep focused on what's important and helps her navigate all the difficult decisions she needs to make. Finally, we talk about how exercise is important for more than just our physical health. It's directly related to our mental health, healing abilities, and more. Ali said to just start walking. Just walk. Get my steps in every day. People completely underestimate how powerful that is.” [18:24] “There is more than having a nice shape to your body. There is the privilege of strength, of being able to get up on your own, of not having to rely on somebody else, of being able to walk by yourself. Having a growth mindset, prioritizing strength training, knowing your body type, and practicing regular self-care are the keys to taking control of your life. I'm joined by Dr. Weili Gray, a sleep and lifestyle physician who recently took one of my programs, to talk about the benefits she's seen in her life since adopting my recommended practices.   Key Takeaway Prioritize your self-care to improve all areas of your life. What do you do for your health, fitness, and well-being?   About Dr. Weili Gray Dr. Weili Gray is a board-certified sleep, integrative, and lifestyle medicine physician who practices in Vermont. She is also a Registered Life Planner and the founder of Dare to Dream Physician, where she offers life planning and hosts a weekly podcast.   The Importance of Body Types and Strength Training I've just met Dr. Weili Gray, but honestly, I feel like I've known her for a long time. What I love most about her, and it's evident in this conversation, is how much she values her self-care. She also has a growth mindset which helps her continuously develop herself, her life, and her goals. Dr. Gray says that she never used to prioritize strength training, but now that she does include it in her movement routine, she's seeing the benefits across her life. Not only did she learn about the importance of strength training during my program, but Dr. Gray also learned about different body types! She really stresses how much her knowledge of her own body's needs developed when she started understanding the different body types out there. She also learned that actually making time for exercise is so beneficial to her as an ectomorph, the naturally slender body type.   Prioritize Yourself for More Control in Your Life Dr. Gray explains why she prioritizes investing in herself. She says that it makes her a better person all around - she feels she improves in her roles as mom, wife, and physician when she practices self-care and puts her own needs first. When she practices regular self-care, including her four days of exercise, Dr. Gray says she feels more in control of her life. She's less stressed and better equipped to focus on everything she has going on. Dr. Gray also explains how she includes her family in her self-care routine and helps encourage their health and wellness, too. Finally, we talk about the importance of adopting a growth mindset.
