Libby shares her personal and professional journey with hypermobility explaining what hypermobility is and the associated symptoms. Libby, Katy and Jeannette discuss the paradox that bendy bodies have large ranges of motion yet tense muscles and how a sedentary lifestyle is even more of a liability for people with hypermobility syndromes. Libby and Katy outline the ABCs of a movement program for bendy bodies that often struggle with proprioception and are easily fatigued. They emphasize the importance of higher load activities performed with very mindful attention to exercise form. They caution that smaller and slower movements are key whatever the exercise modality. Also in this episode, Katy has a conversation with Sohail Shariff of Movemate, creator of segmented active standing boards designed to be used while you work. Sohail explains the personal stories behind the product and its design. Katy shares her appreciation of the boards particularly how  these boards foster dynamic movement of the foot and ankle, something missing with traditional balance boards. Sohail and Katy also discuss the board's segmented design; the multiple articulations create a flowing but stable motion which means Katy can move and focus on work at the same time. Finally they discuss the value of the board in the therapeutic space particularly for those with a need for movement that soothes the nervous system. Books Mentioned:Yoga for Bendy People: Optimizing the Benefits of Yoga for Hypermobility by Libby Hinsley I Know I Should Exercise, But... by Diana Hill & Katy Bowman Made Possible by Our Dynamic Collective of Wonderful Sponsors:Smart Playrooms, design and products to keep you and your kids engaged and active at home; Movemate, dynamic active standing boards that invite movement and play into your workday, without disrupting your workflow; Correct Toes, soft silicone toe spacers that can be worn barefoot or in shoes; Peluva Five-toe minimalist sports shoes ideal for higher impact activities; Venn Design, beautiful floor cushions and ball seats that keep you moving at home or at the office and Wildling, minimal footwear for toddlers, kids and adults made from natural materials.  Thoughts/questions email us at podcast@nutritiousmovement.comYour Voice on the Podcast: Read The Credits

The learning journey I've been on regarding hypermobility is incredibly personal. I was plagued with nearly constant minor and serious injuries most of my life. As a dancer that seemed normal, but it was very difficult and I was often injured more than anyone else I knew. I worked so hard to “build more stability” and “get out of my patterns of gripping” and some things did help quite a bit, most notably Feldenkrais. But it was really only in the last ten years, as information about hypermobility started to spread first through the movement world, and then through into the mainstream culture, that I began to understand my body and how to work with it effectively. I'm so happy to report that despite being about 7 years past due for when it was suspected I would need a full hip replacement (get the full backstory here) and having a toddler and very little time for self care, I have less pain now then I ever have in my whole life! Learning about how to work with hypermobility in myself and my students has been nothing short of life changing for me. And understanding how to work with hypermobility is particularly important for yoga teachers! That is why I'm so thrilled to finally have Libby Hinsley on the show today.  Libby Hinsley (she/her)  is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, personal trainer, and Yoga Therapist specializing in the treatment of people with hypermobility syndromes and chronic pain As a person living with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, she is passionate about raising awareness about hypermobility syndromes in the yoga community and beyond. Chronic pain, muscle tightness, and fatigue are common complaints for those with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome (EDS); an inherited condition that can take over 10 years to diagnose. In this episode, Libby shares why the specialty model of medical care leaves many health concerns undiagnosed. Multi-system conditions, like Ehlers–Danlos syndrome, are hard to diagnose not only because many physicians are not educated about them, but also because people with Ehlers–Danlos syndrome experience vague clusters of symptoms that don't fit within a specific medical specialty, leaving the majority of concerns undiagnosed or left with random and overlapping diagnoses. Libby Hinsley is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Yoga Therapist specializing in the treatment of chronic pain, hypermobility disorders, and yoga-related injuries. She has taught yoga since 2005 and has trained yoga teachers for over a decade. We cover topics like: 2:33 Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, symptomatic hypermobility, hypermobility spectrum disorders, and connective tissue disorders 7:19 Diagnosing Ehlers-Danlos syndrome 10:10 Common symptoms of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome 15:05 Impacts on the urogenital tract and muscular tightness 22:30 How to manage chronic pain capabilities with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome 29:10 Hypermobility and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome in men 35:00 Yoga for bendy people 40:00 Tips on finding a healthcare professional for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome I love how Libby reminds us why getting a diagnosis is freeing: because when you understand your physiology, you can learn how to approach your life without fear of the “what if.” Ehlers-Danlos syndrome involves a genetic anomaly in collagen and connective-tissue synthesis and structure. This is important to recognize when considering concerns in your pants, because the pelvic region and urogenital system are made up of collagen-rich tissues (like the bladder and pelvic ligaments). With EDS, wherever there's connective tissue, instead of having taught tissues, the tissue sags and creates an opportunity for pelvic floor prolapse, urinary and fecal incontinence, anal fissures, vesicoureteral reflux, recurrent urinary tract infections, cryptorchidism, hypogonadism, testicular torsion, and tight foreskin. Because muscle tightness in Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a compensatory mechanism for a lack in joint stability and muscle strength, treatment plans start with simultaneously unwinding tension while building a foundation of functional strength. Before training and strengthening muscles, it's important to allow the muscles to relax first, since an already activated and contracted muscle can't contract anymore. How and why to seek a diagnosis for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome: On average, it takes 10 years, leaving many suffering for a prolonged time. There's a wide spectrum of symptom severity for people with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. For some, the symptoms magnify quickly after surgery, viral infection, or changes in hormones (like during or after pregnancy). There are 14 types of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, with Hypermobility Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) being the most common. 13 of the types are diagnosable with a blood test, while the hypermobile type is diagnosed with a clinical evaluation. For healthcare providers and practitioners, rare conditions like Ehlers-Danlos syndrome are a reminder to check assumptions when considering a default diagnosis and to think outside your patterns of diagnosing by really considering all the symptoms in front of you. Refer to the Ehlers-Danlos Society checklist: https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/heds-diagnostic-checklist/ and the signs and symptoms: https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/what-is-eds/ There are many conditions that are commonly diagnosed with those who have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome. The EDS classification provides more information about these conditions https://www.ehlers-danlos.com/2017-eds-classification-non-experts/ RESOURCES: Libby's new book — Yoga for Bendy People: Optimizing the benefits of yoga for hypermobility — explores how people with joint hypermobility can avoid injury and instead, use the tools of yoga to support their thriving. Did you know that mobility and flexibility increase in the pregnant body? And that this “borrowed flexibility” lingers in the postpartum body? Thanks to the hormones of pregnancy, primarily relaxin our ligaments relax to allow space in our pelvis to deliver a baby. Unfortunately relaxin doesn't just go straight to our hips, it loosens the ligaments in our entire body. This hypermobility can easily lead to injury, especially in a yoga class.  Today on Yoga | Birth| Babies we're combining two of my favorite topics into one conversation. We're going to talk about yoga and anatomy , specifically hypermobility and how it relates to the pregnant and postpartum body. Of course we're also going to dive into diastasic recti, the S.I. joint, overstretching and the pelvic floor. To have this conversation I welcomed back Libby Hinsley, Physical Therapist, Yoga Therapist and author of the book Yoga for Bendy People. Libby was on the podcast back in 2020 to talk about one of my favorite muscles, the Psoas. Today's conversation was a lot of fun and I think a very important episode for yoga practitioners and teachers. Support Our Sponsor:  Ritual: Turn healthy habits into a ritual. In this episode I interviewed Libby Hinsley.  Libby lives in Asheville, NC and is a Doctor of Physical Therapy as well as a Certified Yoga Therapist. She draws most of her Yoga inspiration from the tradition of Desikachar, or the viniyoga lineage and she was fortunate to study at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in 2008 and has immersed herself in this tradition ever since.  Her treatment approach is to view the person as a forest. The body is one component of the human experience, and it is impacted by all the others. In the same way, effective treatment of the body requires understanding how all of its parts work together for integrated function. Libby has a new book coming out entitled Yoga for Bendy People. It explores specific approaches to yoga practices to best support people with hypermobility syndromes. Libby herself lives with Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, so the topic is a passion of hers. The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 188: Effective Yoga Cues with Libby Hinsley   Description: Something that almost every yoga teacher has to do when leading a class is give cues to guide our students in the movements, breath practices and meditations. These cues can be both visual and verbal, and either online or in person. But how effective are our cues, and what are the cues that are really not helpful for our students? Libby Hinsley sheds some light on how to cue effectively in a yoga class.   Libby Hinsley is a licensed Physical Therapist and a Certified Yoga Therapist who currently runs a private PT practice which integrates Yoga and Manual Therapy. Libby is also passionate about educating yoga teachers about anatomy, and is developing a new project called Anatomy Bites! with Mado Hesselink under the umbrella of Yoga Teacher Resource. Through this platform, Libby aims to give yoga teachers clarity, guidance and support for learning anatomy in a monthly membership format.   Giving yoga cues effectively really comes down to thinking about the intention behind our cues. Libby explains how understanding the reason for each movement and the intended effect can help you give the right cues. Shannon and Libby also discuss cueing for safety, the importance of cueing for beginners or those who are new to yoga, and how anatomy can inform your cueing. Libby shares her insights about “right and wrong” in cueing, and what can happen when you use cues that you do not understand.   If you've ever struggled with how to give your students cues in class, or have cued something that produced a completely different effect and want to know how to avoid that in the future, this episode is for you.   Key Takeaways: [6:05] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Libby Hinsley. [7:48] What does Libby do and who does she do it for? [9:21] What excites Libby about talking about cueing for yoga teachers? [13:01] The assumption in giving cues is often that this is the cue to ensure students' safety. Libby unpacks this assumption and how it translates into the cues we give. [15:19] A common cue in a yoga class is not letting the knee go past the ankle. Libby explains why that's not necessarily a cue for safety. [18:29] Libby shares why she prefers movement to static postures and how that helps to build strength in different parts of the body. [20:29] Shannon and Libby discuss tree pose and the positioning of the foot in relation to the knee. [21:35] Libby brings up the cueing of the shoulders that may not necessarily be useful in ensuring safety. [24:10] How should we cue the shoulders when moving into poses? Libby explains how understanding anatomy can help address underlying issues that may be present. [27:15] How helpful is it to understand different conditions that may be present (e.g. kyphosis or lordosis) as yoga teachers and where do we draw the line in suggesting things that may be helpful vs. giving a diagnosis? [31:56] Shannon and Libby explore why yoga teachers need to release the pressure on themselves to know everything in every other discipline related to yoga. [35:05] What are some cues Libby wishes didn't exist? [36:13] For new practitioners of yoga, they need some guidance about what shape they should be in, and cues can be a good starting point for that. However, we should not throw out the freedom to have some exploration of different approaches. [38:48] Libby highlights some of the things to take note of when cueing shoulder position. [41:44] Using simple cues and saying less (not over-cueing) is better! [44:21] What are some helpful things to think about when planning cueing for new teachers? [48:38] Libby shares one of the cues she likes to use, particularly in response to the question "where am I supposed to feel this?". [50:37] Libby has a second download about safety - be sure to get it from the links below. [51:02] What is Anatomy Bites? [52:38] Libby leaves us with some final thoughts and advice about cueing.
