This week, I chatted with David Weinstock, the brilliant mind behind Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT). We dive into the fascinating journey of how NKT came to be, how it's integrated into movement professions like Pilates, and why understanding proper breathing and diaphragm function is so crucial. We also talk in-depth about the role of the psoas muscle in core stability and why it's important to assess whether it's overworking or underworking before diving into treatment. David shares his knowledge on how the psoas connect with other muscles and systems in the body, such as the diaphragm and the limbic system. We also touch on the emotional side of things—how trauma impacts movement—and how addressing this can be key to successful outcomes. David's take on failure and how it's a vital part of learning really resonated with me, as well as his perspective on the joy and reward that comes from helping others and making a positive impact. Takeaways: Neurokinetic Therapy (NKT) is an amazing system that focuses on how movement patterns connect, using biomechanics and neuroscience to assess and rehabilitate both acute and chronic injuries. Addressing the limbic system is crucial for deeper healing and more effective treatment. Embracing Failure: David's insight into failure was refreshing—it's a necessary part of learning and growth, something I think we can all relate to. The Reward of Helping Others: David reminds us of the deep fulfillment that comes from helping people heal and make positive changes in their lives. About David Weinstock: David has been at the forefront of manual therapy since 1973, after graduating from Johns Hopkins and traveling throughout Central and South America, learning from native healers. He co-founded the Institute of Conscious Bodywork in California and developed NeuroKinetic Therapy® in 1985. His book, "NeuroKinetic Therapy, an Innovative Approach to Manual Muscle Testing," has become an essential read for anyone in the bodywork field. When Rafael Nadal was hobbling around the Rod Laver Arena in January at this year's Australian Open there seemed little doubt that this would be nothing more than a minor setback in a career that has seen plenty of injury downs followed by trophy-lifting highs. He lost his match against Mackenzie McDonald but the clay season wasn't far away and we all know how that normally pans out for the 22-time Grand Slam winner. When the prognosis of a 6-8 week absence from the tour was revealed by Nadal in the aftermath of that defeat in Melbourne, the aforementioned thoughts seemed to have been confirmed. Is hip hinging bad for your kidneys?***This is my hypothesis question in my latest episode. The more I learn about the body, the more I learn about some fascinating correlations. These are things such as the relationships between fascia, organs and muscles as well as which muscles become inhibited when organs are under strain.***Hip hinging as a stand alone movement is obviously not bad for your kidneys. However the myofascial adaptations that accompany being able to hinge more than 4 plates a side does bare ramifications on our internal anatomy. If you start to get symptoms of kidney dysfunction, there could be a correlation there.***In this episode I also delve deep into the functional anatomy of the Psoas muscle. I explain why it's function is so misunderstood and why it's so important to hinging mechanics.***Finally I finish (somewhat randomly) with a 15 minute explanation of how to use a financial system which will make you a lot more money in 2023. This week, we're welcoming Sara Reardon, a pelvic floor physical therapist who's also known as The Vagina Whisperer.  You may know her from her viral TedX talk on rethinking postpartum care. One of the most important things we cover is that everyone has a pelvic floor (men/women/non-binary people) and that pelvic pain is not only a condition that impacts pergnant or postpartum women. That's because oftentimes, it isn't until we experience pelvic floor pain or issues that we become aware of this part of our body. Sara's mission includes normalizing conversations about the pelvic floor, helping people understand what this muscle is,  and how to know when it needs to relaxed or be strengthened. We also chat about the different conditions that might bring you to a pelvic pain physical therapist and symptoms that are actually signals of pelvic pain. And that chronic stressors, conditioning and belief systems about sex or historical trauma can impact the tension in your pelvic floor. We end with Sara guiding us through a ribcage breathing practice that is a precursor to any pelvic floor releasing.

Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them! In this Wednesday Q&A, we answer your questions about anteriorly versus posteriorly tilted pelvis and psoas release techniques. Your questions:In a book I've been reading, the author states that most people are rib thrusters and pelvis tuckers. The author says this is a response to being hunched over in a seated position with the pelvis tucked or as a counterbalance to high heels. When in doubt, stick your butt out is what he says. Shortened hamstrings and calves pull the pelvis into a posterior tilt. Tucking the pelvis under, especially while sitting brings the sacrum out of alignment, brings it forward into the bowl of the pelvis. Ultimately the pelvic floor muscles shorten and lose their ability to contract. I'm under the impression that most people suffer from an anteriorly tilted pelvis because sitting causes hip flexors to shorten and tighten while glutes get long and weak from sitting. Is that correct? Which is more prevalent, anterior or posterior tilt? Which is more of a concern for the pelvis - shortened hip flexors and weak hips, or shorten calves and hamstrings?I have been seeing some posts about how you can't relax the psoas through pressure because of all the muscle and viscera that is layered under it. And yet if I do use a block to lie on, especially after a lot of hand pressing, I do feel that it helps relax the area and loosens my low back. I feel like you think that it must help a bit because you've included it in one of your classes once and called it belly time for adults. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that. Did you know that mobility and flexibility increase in the pregnant body? And that this “borrowed flexibility” lingers in the postpartum body? Thanks to the hormones of pregnancy, primarily relaxin our ligaments relax to allow space in our pelvis to deliver a baby. Unfortunately relaxin doesn't just go straight to our hips, it loosens the ligaments in our entire body. This hypermobility can easily lead to injury, especially in a yoga class.  Today on Yoga | Birth| Babies we're combining two of my favorite topics into one conversation. We're going to talk about yoga and anatomy , specifically hypermobility and how it relates to the pregnant and postpartum body. Of course we're also going to dive into diastasic recti, the S.I. joint, overstretching and the pelvic floor.
