Shawn is one of the world’s leading health experts as the bestselling author of Sleep Smarter and host of the #1 rated Model Health Show. The first part of the discussion is about foot functionality. Shawn mentions the emerging research on how minimalist shoes can address the cause of foot dysfunction, “nourishing and rehabilitating our feet.” Then describes the awakening he has experienced using Peluva five-toe minimalist shoes, with increased proprioception and ease of movement. Then the show gets personal, as Shawn describes how his journey to becoming a health leader took shape. Growing up as an athlete in St. Louis, MO, Shawn suffering a serious injury on the running track and discovered that he was severely malnourished and had a degenerative bone disease. With his athletic dreams compromised, he lost hope, endured further suffering that included his mental health and putting on a bunch of excess body fat, and had to start from the bottom to turn his life around. Shawn’s struggle included having to reject mainstream medical treatment and a “poor me” attitude and discover a path to health on his own. Shawn’s grandma gets a huge plug here, and you will be touched by Shawn’s emotional recount of how he turned the corner and truly saved his life. You’ll also learn that Shawn’s malnourished youth was not some bizarre bad luck, but rather the norm in modern life today. Shawn cites research published in JAMA that kids today are eating 70% ultra-processed foods; the situation worsens with low socio-economic conditions. Shawn tells us the main ways we are still screwing up our health, even with lots of great information and awareness today. He urges us to prioritize sleep and take bold steps to optimize health. It starts with controlling your use of digital technology, forming an empowering attitude where you place health #1, creating a winning evening ritual, and more. [07:45] When you get into the Peluvas, it is important to start slowly, making sure your feet that have been stuffed into shoes have a chance to adjust. [16:43] At 20 years old, Shawn was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease. [20:00] A 20-year study found that about 68 percent of America's children's diet consists of ultra processed foods. [21:29] Shawn could not imagine spending the rest of his life with the pain he was experiencing, so he began to research for a solution. [25:48] The most overlooked aspects of exercise is that it increases assimilation. [29:03] He began to understand how important his sleep and the proper nutrition are to his recovery. [30:40] Sleep impacts people's nutrition and general health. [36:11] Even though there is much information available for people to be informed on sleep and nutrition, we are still falling behind. [38:54] Shawn has suggested 21 tips for better sleep. One of the most important is the evening habit of being on screens. It interferes with your circadian rhythm and melatonin. Today's witnesses are from Matthew West's website called popwe.org. If you don't know who Matthew West is, he is a singer, songwriter, and storyteller. This website is for the non-profit that he has with his father, a pastor. Matthew and his father encourage people to share their stories. They have various categories of stories. Today, I chose two testimonies from the God Stories Category. Often, we can hear our own story in someone else's story. When we listen to others tell their story, it helps us see that we are not alone. When we hear how God worked in their situation, it gives us hope that He will work in ours, too! I pray when you hear these testimonies, you get the faith and hope to believe that miracles can happen in your situation, also. I pray you know that God is there with you, and if you invite Him into your situation, He can help. I hope you enjoy these testimonies.Brande: I have been dealing with back problems for a while and couldn't figure out what was going on. I was overweight so I thought that maybe that was the problem. But the more weight I lost the worse my pain became. In April of this year, I had an MRI done and found out I have Degenerative Disc Disease, Arthritis and Spinal Stenosis. I also have a tear in one of my discs and my L5 is pushing on my S1.So, in July I had an injection, and it didn't work. I went back to the doctor in August, and he had set up another injection for Sept 20th. But a week before, the doctor office called and said that my insurance would not approve another injection until I see the nurse practitioner. After I hung up the phone that day, I was upset. We were busy at work, and I was in a lot of pain. After work, I sat in my car and cried, feeling defeated. I wanted to give up.Then, as I was driving home from work, “Don't Stop Praying” come on and I started bawling. I knew that was God telling me not to stop praying.I shared this at church, and someone there works for SSDI. She called me and helped me start the process of filling for that assistance.I know this is all an answer to my prayers. That song means more to me than anyone could ever imagine not just for this situation but others as well.My name is Suzie, and this is my testimony of God's strength.Three months ago, I was faced with a dark season. This is a season I never asked for and never thought in a million years I would ever have to go through. I was lied to, and almost broken. My heart was shattered, and I felt numb to everything. I had no clue how this could happen. How could someone who is supposed to be my life partner do something like this?Being a recovering alcoholic, I could have easily fallen back to drinking to forget everything that was happening. But instead, I choose to turn to God, my Bible, and my pastor. You could say I choose the high road instead of the lonely, dead-end road. I thought I was doing well, and I was trying my hardest to keep my head up and be as strong as I could. Yet, it hurt, and I was emotionally tired. In reality, I was spiraling and not doing well at all. I felt like I was in tunnel vision and couldn't get out. I then took the first step in healing by admitting to myself I needed help and reached out to talk with a counselor. Admitting out loud that I needed help emotionally and mentally and that I was not ok, was a huge step in getting through this. In all thisI was getting signs that I needed to let go of everything I was holding onto. Which I really thought I had done. But in truth I was not listening to what God was saying to me. Until one Saturday morning. I got a message from a friend checking in on me to see how I was doing. After talking with her I felt God telling me I need to let go of everything I am holding on to so I could start to really heal. So, I said a simple prayer that morning before getting ready for the day. After saying the prayer, God started working in my heart. During different times throughout the day, I wanted to leave where I was. But God said “No, you need to stay put. You need to be with others around you.” I soon realized I was right where I need to be, and I am stronger than I realized. I also realized that I was truly holding onto some parts, and I needed to let go and let God work through me to heal.I am blessed beyond words that I have an awesome support system that knows when I am having a rough time or trying to fake it. I realize that I don't have to be strong all the time. It's ok for me to show my emotions and show that I am human. And it's “ok” to not be “ok” and most importantly it's “ok” to have bad days.I am thankful to God and His guidance and the love He has shown me. He has put people in my path through all of this storm for one reason or another. I am grateful for the little reminders He is showing me to keep my head up. I know my path of healing is going to be a long journey and it is not going to be easy. There are going to be tough days and easy days. If it was meant to be easy, then it wouldn't be called a storm. I am ready to see what God has in store for me no matter how long it takes.Psalm 27:14 “Wait patiently for the Lord. Be brave and courageous. Yes, wait patiently for the Lord.”Thank you all for sharing your stories. I know it can be hard to be vulnerable and share what you have gone through. Yet, when we do, it helps others who are in a similar circumstance know there is hope that the same can happen for them. When you hear the term "degenerative disc disease," it might sound like a severe condition but Dr. Tony Nalda simplifies it for us, explaining that it's not a disease you catch; it's more like wear and tear due to your spine being out of alignment. The Basics of Spinal Structure Your spine has 24 vertebrae stacked on top of each other, each separated by something called intervertebral discs. These discs act like spacers, providing flexibility, cushioning, and maintaining the spine's natural alignment. They have a tough outer layer called the annulus and a soft gel-like interior known as the nucleus. Understanding Degeneration Degenerative disc disease happens when the spine shifts out of alignment, putting abnormal pressure on one disc. This causes that specific disc to degenerate faster than usual. You can compare it to a car with misaligned tires – you wouldn't say the tire has a disease, but rather the car needs realignment to prevent further wear. Symptoms and Development and Treatment The common symptoms include back or neck pain, depending on where the degeneration occurs. The process involves disc desiccation, a loss of water within the disc, leading to a loss of height and neurological changes. Importantly, degeneration happens gradually over many years, and you often feel pain or discomfort after a long period of deterioration. To treat degenerative disc disease, you need to tackle the root cause – alignment issues. It is important to address the alignment problems, often caused by injuries, spinal conditions, or lifestyle choices. Specific chiropractic care, therapy exercises, and rehabilitation can help realign the spine, preventing further degeneration. Preserving spinal function involves positive lifestyle choices and proper ergonomics during daily activities. If you suspect or know you have disc degeneration, proactive treatment options, including evaluations and restoration of normal alignment, can be beneficial. Understanding degenerative disc disease is the first step to effective treatment. For personalized insights and treatment options, listen to Dr. Nalda's podcast.

In today's episode, Dr. Tony Nalda sheds light on common misconceptions about Degenerative Disc Disease. Contrary to popular belief, degenerative disc disease is not a contagious or systemic illness. Instead, it refers to the degeneration of the discs located between the vertebrae in your spine. What is Degenerative Disc Disease The discs in your spine serve as cushions and allow for flexibility, enabling you to move and bend. They also act as shock absorbers, distributing mechanical stresses throughout your body. When the spine loses its normal alignment due to factors like injury, scoliosis, or poor posture, certain areas of the spine may degenerate faster. This localized degeneration is what we refer to as degenerative disc disease. Symptoms of Degenerative Disc Disease Decreased flexibility: One of the primary signs of degenerative disc disease is a decrease in flexibility in the affected area, which can limit your range of motion. Back pain: As the degeneration progresses, it can lead to localized back pain in the affected area of the spine. Radiating pains: Degenerative disc disease can cause radiating pains, such as sciatica or thoracic outlet syndrome, which can affect the neck, head, arms, or legs due to nerve compression. To potentially reverse the effects of degenerative disc disease, it is crucial to address the underlying cause. The first step is to restore normal alignment in the spine. By realigning the spine, which may involve addressing misalignment or scoliosis, the issues contributing to disc degeneration can be mitigated. This realignment creates a more favorable environment for healing. Although spinal discs lose their ability to heal as one reaches adulthood, promoting the best conditions for healing is essential. By focusing on the cause of degeneration, such as misalignment, it is possible to improve the chances of the discs healing themselves to some extent. Additionally, improving the flexibility of the affected discs plays a vital role. While complete restoration of disc height may not be possible, enhancing flexibility can alleviate symptoms and support healing. By taking a proactive approach and addressing the root cause of degenerative disc disease, it is possible to prevent further degeneration and potentially reverse some of its effects. To gain a better understanding of degenerative disc disease, its causes, and the importance of addressing the underlying alignment issues, tune in to Dr. Tony Nalda's podcast. Artlist.io 847544

Despite its limited range of movement, the sacroiliac joint is prone to instability and is often a source of back pain in patients. On this episode of Back Talk Doc, Dr. Sanjiv Lakhia and Tanner Holden, PT from Carolina Neurosurgery and Spine Associates discuss the SI joint itself, some common causes of SI joint pain, and what the latest science has to offer for management. Patients can experience SI joint pain during or after pregnancy, pain from the joint itself, or autoimmune pain. However, diagnosing SI joint pain is rarely straightforward because medical imaging is not typically helpful in diagnosing SI joint pain. The pain can present in unexpected places and is often best diagnosed with the help of pain provocation tests. Once diagnosed, patients can opt for regular pain-reducing injections for a quick solution. A more holistic treatment plan looks at patient goals and finds ways to improve movement over time. This may also include lifestyle modifications to remove the irritants or activities that cause the pain to flare up. Since SI joint pain sources vary from patient to patient, plans are customized to individual needs. Tanner believes that healthy movement, activity, and strength are key to living an active and pain-free life. He and Dr. Lakhia discuss how this approach puts the patient first and removes the need for unnecessary supports like braces and belts. Instead, a strength-based approach allows patients to take their care into their own hands, resulting in fewer medical visits.
If your back has been hurting and you haven't been able to find relief, or you have chronic recurrent arthritic pain, it may be time to explore new options. On this episode of Back Talk Doc, Dr. Sanjiv Lakhia hosts a solo episode to reframe how patients should be thinking about osteoarthritis and degenerative disc disease. He proposes that patients move away from thinking of these conditions as the inevitable result of wear and tear, and instead look at them through the lens of metabolic dysfunction. Using a framework focusing on food and supplementation options, Dr. Lakhia discusses the connection between what we put in our bodies and the pain that we feel. Two of the biggest culprits for inflammation in the North American diet are gluten and dairy. Studies have shown that removing these from your diet can reduce back pain. Dr. Lakhia discusses the benefits of adding collagen, EGCG, melatonin, and a botanical nutrient combination that uses cannabidiol and a fatty acid known as palmitoylethanolamide (PEA). Each supplement is backed by research and has shown promise for treating back pain. “I think those are some really exciting options to consider beyond the typical thought process of just vitamin D, turmeric, and fish oil,” says Dr. Lakhia. For those interested in learning more, check out the 14 Day Challenge that is available on Dr. Lakhia's website.

This episode, hosted by William Mark Erwin, DC, PhD and Zorica Buser,PhD with the NASS Section on Biologics, introduces biologic therapy to treat DDD with an emphasis on the IVD NP. They discuss challenges faced by the otherwise “hostile” IVD NP environment, define and debate different biologic therapies (protein-based, cellular based, body-derived substances, ECM-based) as well as review what forms the putative therapy should be delivered. They wrap up the discussion on what the future may hold in this field.
Dating. It's a weighted word that triggers eye rolls and a slew of other emotions and emotive responses. We all know that staying physically active is one of the best things you can do for your arthritis and overall health. But let's be honest, staying active when pain is persistent is hard, and at times, may feel impossible. The research and recommendations for the benefits of physical activity are well documented. The CDC recommends adults with chronic health conditions and disabilities get at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity a week and at least two days a week of muscle-strengthening activities. But what does that mean exactly? And what does that look like? And what if you can't meet those guidelines? In this episode, our experts we'll answer those and many more questions about physical activity and arthritis and the importance of starting where you are. *Visit the Live Yes! Students often share scary sounding diagnoses with their yoga teachers and expect us to know what they are - and how to modify for them. Today's episode is the first of a mini series about some of the most common conditions that will show up in a yoga classroom. Dr. Libby Hinsley demystifies the misleading diagnosis of “degenerative disc disease” - and shares the tools you will need as a yoga teacher to confidently help any student who tells you they have it. Episode Highlights: How your back is like a Jelly Doughnut! What IS “degenerative disc” and what impact should it have on your practice? The relationship between bulging, slipped, and herniated discs (hint - one of these isn't a real thing). The prevalence of spinal abnormalities - and how worried we should be if they show up on imaging. The relationship between degenerative disc disease and backbends. Nerve compression symptoms and how to modify for them. W. Mark Erwin, DC, PhD and Zorica Buser, PhD, MBA discuss the term “DDD” and what accepted science defines as DDD as well as what the salient cellular, molecular and imaging characteristics are that define DDD as compared to normal ‘ageing' changes. Additional questions addressed include: What characteristics and symptoms are shared and NOT shared with the ageing disc? How does one delineate these distinctions clinically? Is it possible? How do the cellular/molecular changes associated with the degenerative disc correlate with a patient's symptoms? How much degeneration is ‘necessary' before symptoms manifest? Is this even known?

Episode Highlights [03:30] Breaking the Misconceptions about Arthritis Arthritis is more than a wear-and-tear condition; it's an inflammatory disease process. It is not limited to the elderly. The disease process can begin with minor injuries, even those sustained as a child. Arthritis is a combination of genetics and environmental factors triggered by trauma. [08:25] Arthritis as an Inflammatory Disease Process Arthritis is a disease process like neurodegenerative and cardiac illnesses. Our bodies follow a balanced way to deal with injuries. It releases the level of cytokines that set off the body's response to healing and recovery. Afterwards, cytokine levels fall, and anti-inflammatory proteins take over. The disease process begins during Imbalance in any part of the process. It can be started as too many cytokines lead to zombie cells and lack of autophagy. [12:20] General Approaches to Addressing Arthritis Turn off inflammatory cytokines through simple supplements like curcumin or epigallocatechin. Turning down the inflammatory response allows the injury to heal better. Inducing autophagy or knocking off the bad cells helps reduce injury as well. [13:36] Arthritis is a Preventable Disease Arthritis is a disease that should be given more attention, as it has a significant impact on people's quality of life. It is the primary cause of disability among people of working age. Arthritis is preventable to a large degree, despite genetics and other factors. [18:32] Current Orthopedic Treatments for Arthritis The focus in addressing arthritis is to treat the disease process. Steroid injections temporarily reduce inflammatory cytokines, but they also inhibit those that aid in healing. Arthroscopic surgery can provide immediate comfort. However, it can also inflict tears that can cause the rapid progression of arthritis. Back fusion can help cases of spinal instability. However, for degenerative discs, the long-term success rate of surgery is around 10% of those who undergo it. [24:09] Degenerative Disc Disease as an Inflammatory Disease Degenerative disc disease is an inflammatory disease caused by high levels of cytokines. This includes the nuclear factor kappa beta. The goal is to focus on the issues that cause disc destruction, such as elevated cytokine levels, rather than the disc itself. Ageing processes, like degeneration, should serve as a wake-up call to reconsider one's diet. This also includes reconsidering supplements, and exercise, as well as one's cardiovascular health. [27:18] Changing the Perspective about Arthritis People should be aware that arthritis begins in their 20s, similar to brain disorders, heart ailments, and cancers. All these immune and inflammatory diseases come down to curing ageing. We need to take proactive steps and opt for longevity instead of a mechanical standard of care. Opting for the ‘expensive' care earlier will save you time, stress, and money. People often exhaust traditional options first before pursuing longevity treatments. [38:49] Pentosan Polysulfate: ‘A Cure for Arthritis' Pentosan polysulfate is a repurposed drug that reduces cytokines causing degenerative disc pain. According to studies, even after just six weeks of using Pentosan Polysulfate, you can continue to reap the advantages for up to a year. [45:07] Vitamins and Supplements to Combat Arthritis Another strategy to fight arthritis is to make sure your nutrients are optimised. Vitamins D and C, and zinc are critical but straightforward micronutrients. Epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG, has many benefits that aid in addressing arthritis. Its benefits include muscle-building, fat loss, and myostatin blocking. [47:07] Benefits of Gaining Muscle Muscle, as an organ, produces endocrine glands, and myokines have very beneficial effects on joints. Those with sarcopenia or muscle loss are more likely to develop joint arthritis. Electrical stimulation of muscles can be done for individuals who are further along in a disease process. Static contraction or contracting the muscles for three seconds every hour also helps muscle-building. [51:03] Inducing Autophagy Process Using Spermidine Spermidine is a polyamine compound that comes from bacteria in certain foods. Polyamine is produced by the human body as well. However, as we become older, we make less of it. It is an autophagy-Inducing agent that aids in getting rid of damaged cells. Spermidine works better than steroids at reducing inflammation. It preserves the joints without making them worse. [54:06] Trehalose: The ‘Sugar Substitute' Trehalose is glucose that impacts oxidative stress and helps clean up the cells. It has zero glycemic impact, which helps blood glucose under control. Trehalose is looked at for neurodegenerative diseases but can benefit joint pain. [56:57] Peptide Therapies as Simple, Inexpensive Aid If you are looking for simple, inexpensive aid, collagen peptides can also be beneficial. They typically are part of a mixture including Vitamin C, which helps cartilage cells. A more expensive option is aggressive peptides, like BPC 157 or Body Protection Compound 157. These peptides can aid joint regeneration. It's vital to understand the role of inflammation in arthritis rather than jumping at treatments, like stem cell therapy. [59:54] The Role of Stressed Immune System Almost every disease is related to over-aggressive, pro-inflammatory cytokines, disruption in mitochondrial function, and autophagy. Ageing causes a significant number of diseases. The immune system goes awry for many reasons, including viral exposures. [59:54] Antiviral Drugs, Hormones, and Fasting Antiviral drugs, hormones, and fasting can help the immune system fight diseases as healthy as possible. EGCG and curcumin are natural compounds that have some antiviral properties. Acyclovir is also a safe choice for combatting the herpes virus and Epstein-Barr, among others. Our immune system produces fewer hormones as we become older. Our bodies need hormones to function, so we need to replace them somehow. Hormones have huge immune-modulating properties that help stop oxidative stress. The immune system benefits from the recovery period following a fast. It can be very beneficial to clear out dead cells. [1:08:55] Rapamycin and Metformin: The ‘Future' of Arthritis Rapamycin is a chemotherapeutic medication with a solid immune-modulating effect. It is well-known for activating autophagy, which can lengthen lifespan in all mammalian species scientists have studied. Metformin is an inexpensive medication that keeps glucose control. It has some interesting studies on arthritis. One study shows the overlapping benefits in cardiovascular, renal, cancer, and obesity protection. 7 Powerful Quotes “[Arthritis as an inflammatory disease process] is the same thing that goes on with COVID. Right? Yes. Why do some people die of COVID? [It's] usually not the virus itself -- it's the immune reaction to the virus.” “So we know we have to treat [cytokines] and not the disc itself. That's the end game. Treat the problem that's causing the disc damage.” “...[W]e're really trying to get into the heads of these [20-year-olds] and say, the [disease process starts when you're] 20.
