As Vladimir Putin's brutal invasion of Ukraine plunges Russia's relations with the West into crisis, Jack Blanchard talks to the historian and former U.K. Foreign Secretary David Owen about the turbulent history of the Anglo-Russian relationship.Lord Owen charts the many ups and downs of the 19th and 20th centuries, a period through which Britain and Russia fought side by side in three major wars while also coming close to outright conflict on multiple occasions. Over the past 10 years or so, Russia's relations with the West have been reaching new lows. In bilateral terms, no other relationship has been more indicative of that trajectory than the one with Great Britain. The story of Russian-British ties, partnership, and animosity is thus important to explore. Joining the Kennan Institute's Maxim Trudolubov to discuss this is David Owen, a veteran British politician, who was active in Britain's Russia politics both in Soviet and post-Soviet Russian times. The Institute for Government welcomed Lord Owen and David Ludlow, authors of the book British Foreign Policy After Brexit. The authors discussed key themes from the book and were in conversation with Bronwen Maddox, Director of the Institute for Government. This was followed by a Q and A session. The Rt Hon Lord Owen was a Labour MP for 26 years from 1966-92, serving as Navy Minister, Health Minister and Foreign Secretary in several governments. He was a co-founder of the Social Democratic Party, and its Leader from 1983-87, and the continuing SDP from 1988-90. David Ludlow’s career has spanned the public and private sectors. After stints in the British Embassy in Moscow at the end of the Gorbachev era, he spent two years working with David Owen at the International Conference on the Former Yugoslavia.
