The paper, titled "Lymphedema Treatment Decreases Pain Intensity in Lipedema," was published in the peer-reviewed journal Lymphology in 2011. The study aimed to assess the effects of traditional lymphedema treatment on pain intensity among women with lipedema. The treatment described in the paper includes manual lymph drainage (MLD), pneumatic pump therapy, skin care, compression bandaging, and exercise.

About This Episode: Noted expert in the world of Lymphology, Dr. Paula Stewart, returns to the Our Cancer Journey Podcast to continue our conversation about the disease called Lymphedema. In this Part-2 installment of our in-depth interview with Dr. Stewart, Host Bruce Watkins and our guest open the episode by discussing how the network of Lymphatic veins works with the circulatory system to move fluids. The Lymphatic system does all of its work without the benefit of a beating heart muscle (so fascinating!). Dr. Paula then covers various ways we, together with the help of a trained lymphedema therapist, can not just stop the progression of Lymphedema, but how we can in many cases reverse the swelling and potential complications of this disease. Exercise, expert lymphatic massage, and using specific compression wrapping (short stretch bandages and garments) along with the correct wrapping techniques, are all discussed on this information-rich episode. All this, and some laughter-filled banter as well! Host Bruce and Dr. Paula make a point to break down this complicated topic into very accessible and easy to understand concepts so everyone can benefit from this information.SPECIAL Announcement:As mentioned in this episode, outside of hosting the Our Cancer Journey Podcast, Host Bruce Watkins is a writer, a media producer and a speaker. In one of his recent projects, Bruce was tapped to produce a long-form Lymphedema Education Video for the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center (UCCC) in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. Our lymphatic system is a critical portion of the body's immune system and yet, sadly, it's barely covered in medical school. Tammey spoke with Joachim (Joe) Zuther who wrote the literal textbook on lymphedema. Joe, also known as the Lymphedema Guru, founded the Department of Lymphology at the School for Physical Therapy in Ulm, Germany in 1990. Having found his passion, he formed The Academy of Lymphatic Studies which provides Lymphedema Therapy Certification courses across the United States. His book, “The Textbook for Comprehensive Lymphedema Management” is now in its fourth edition and continues to be an invaluable resource to medical professionals. Joe and Tammey discuss the lymphatic system, lymphedema staging, risks from breast cancer treatment, risk reduction, and the gold standard of treatment, Complete Decongestive Therapy, or CDT.“It's kind of a neglected system in the body even these days. This Episode was long in coming. It took me a bit of time to figure out exactly how to address the topic of inflammation. I was inspired by a particularly bad bout with inflammation and thought that I really needed to be more mindful of what triggers it for me - and STOP DOING THAT! I'm sure I'm not alone. Of course there were other things that would come up and I'd need to divert my attention away from the podcast and take care of other business. So in Episode 5 we look at inflammation. I go over the differences between acute inflammation and chronic inflammation, triggers of inflammation and some of the things we can do to alleviate it when it happens.  I hope you find this episode enjoyable, informative and helpful.
