Wiz RECOMMENDS "Spencer" To be honest, I was conflicted after watching Spencer. On the one hand, the biopic is chock full of formulaic crap that highlights performances that are little more than good mimicry than anything that lets you see the heart and soul of the person it's about. For every brilliant movie like I'm Not There, Mishima: A Life In Four Chapters and Malcolm X, there's a crap ton of mid to low tier films like Get On Up, Bohemian Rhapsody, I Wanna Dance With Somebody and Back in Black. But Spencer gets my recommendation like Elvis did: it's a flawed film in some major ways, but the performance by the main actor is so nuanced and well performed that see it is worth the 2 hour investment. The typical way critics say a person is good as another person is to say "it's like I'm watching the real person on screen...but it's not!" Well, for the majority of the film, that's exactly what it felt like. Kristen Stewart gets the voice, mannerisms and feel of Diana Spencer so accurately that only when there are incredibly tight close-ups of Stewart's face does the illusion break. The wispy voice and the awkward, stilted way she speaks and moves is incredibly articulated. She also fits incredibly well with the costumes in the movie, fitting the frame and aura that Diana had. She also does an excellent job with the scenes involving mental health. Diana goes through a ringer in this film: she's not only dealing with bulimia, but there's also the suffocating nature of the Royal Family. And on top of that, she's processing the fact that her husband, Prince Charles (Jack Farthing), is having an affair behind her back. When she's dealing with these issues, the film takes an uncomfortably tense mood that represents the inner strife of her emotions and her duties as Princess of Wales. But the issues counteract a lot of these pluses: First off, the film is beautiful in some spots, but it feels entirely too indulgent with itself. The setting and area where the film is set is gorgeous in itself, so it feels kind of overboard when the film goes for sweeping wide shots and other shots that seem to not fit with the personal story. Finally, the film tries something different that most bio-pics don't really try. In Spencer, to illustrate the severity of Diana's mental turmoil, they show these scenes that are more metaphorical and symbolic. This includes scenes where Diana sees the ghost of Anne Boleyn. Though I appreciate a film that tries to do something different, these flourishes don't work at all for the film. First off, it doesn't really add much to the film other than saying "ohh that's fucked up!" when she's going through her issues. It just feels kind of cheap. What I don't understand is that you have an excellent performance by Stewart who can literally show all of the pain and suffering on her face. Why not just do that instead of this subplot that isn't really all that effective? As a story, Spencer feels like a miss: it's too indulgent with it's visuals and it tries to make depth in flashy metaphors that doesn't work the way it should. However, this is a recommend solely because of the performance by Kristen Stewart, which is amazing to see her morph into Diana so seamlessly. But I will be honest: if you aren't a fan of Stewart, it's best to avoid.

About the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Album "Homage"  The recording scene in Los Angeles has a long history of great and highly versatile trumpet playing. For the most part, though, these trumpet players rarely get a chance to be featured. In 1957, Tutti Camarata arranged and produced a record called Tutti's Trumpets that featured some of the top session trumpet players in Los Angeles at that time. That was over 60 years ago. Wayne Bergeron and Jeff Bunnell started talking about doing another recording that would feature some of the current session trumpet players here in Los Angeles. Wayne suggested recording a trumpet ensemble CD to Jeff and they loved the idea and thought a choir of trumpets would work well. With that, the Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble came into being. In choosing the music Jeff arranged for this CD, he wanted to pay tribute to some of the film composers who are part of the Los Angeles recording scene (and who write so well for the trumpet), and also pay tribute to some of the great trumpet players of the past and present.  Jerry Hey graciously wrote the arrangment for the last track, the iconic Al Jarreau tune "Roof Garden". Los Angeles Trumpet Ensemble Members Jeff Bunnell Wayne Bergeron Jon Lewis Dan Fornero Marissa Benedict Dan Rosenboom Rob Schaer Larry Hall Dan Savant About Wayne Bergeron Wayne Bergeron is enjoying a career as one of the most sought-after musicians in the world. Studio sessions, film dates, international touring, jazz concerts, guest appearances, and clinics keep him busy not only in his hometown of Los Angeles but worldwide. Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1958, Bergeron came to California at age one. He originally started on French horn but switched to trumpet in seventh grade where he found a natural upper register ability. Bergeron credits his junior high and high school teachers, Ron Savitt and Bob Smith, for molding his talent into practical working skills. Bergeron first caught the ear of many when he landed the lead trumpet chair with Maynard Ferguson's band in 1986. Bergeron can be heard on Maynard's recordings of Body and Soul, Big Bop Nouveau, Brass Attitude, and The One and Only Maynard Ferguson.  Bergeron demonstrates daily why Maynard remarked, “Wayne is the most musical lead trumpet player I've had on my band.” As a sideman, Bergeron's list of recording credits reads like a “who's who” in contemporary jazz and pop, running the stylistic gamut from Ray Charles to Green Day. After being behind the scene for so many years, Bergeron stepped out on his own with his first solo effort, You Call This a Living?  This debut project earned him a Grammy nomination in 2004 for Best Large Jazz Ensemble, as well as rave reviews from fans and press worldwide. Bergeron's second CD, Plays Well With Others, released on the Concord Jazz label in 2007, was met with the same acclaim. Bergeron's most current (and personal favorite) CD, Full Circle, was released in January of 2016.  Bergeron performs various events for the Hollywood Bowl summer season. He has done guest appearances with the L.A. Philharmonic, The New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, Dallas Symphony, Taiwan Symphony, and Tokyo Philharmonic. Bergeron is a National Artist for the Yamaha Corporation of America and is co-designer of the YTR-8335LA trumpet and YFH-8315G Flugelhorn. Bergeron also designed a series of trumpet mouthpieces with Gary Radtke of GR Technologies that are available through Bergeron's website. Simpson: Made in America” – where Jeff is a featured soloist throughout the film (Oscar winner for Best Documentary Feature). Last episode I mentioned there are two things that directors tell me most affect their ability to stay engaged. The first was taking breaks. The second, related, factor is physical movement. There's tonnes of research showing a positive relationship between physical exertion and cognitive performance. But physical movement means different things to different people at different times in different contexts. I, for example, am a fidgeter. Pen clicking, leg jiggling, playing with toys, anything. It just makes me feel a bit better. Other people really (really) hate sitting down for extended stretches. I can relate to that, too. Physical activity can also be a bonding experience. I was at an offsite earlier this summer with a client and the board chair organized an afternoon pickleball session (with beverages). It was AWESOME. Another client of mine, when talking through incorporating physical movement into the cadence of their board work, realized that they were all really into yoga. Now they had a potential physical outlet AND bonding opportunity. In a much more mundane sense, just encouraging people to feel free to stand up and stretch, maybe walk around a bit, can really help them to stay comfortable, engaged, and alert. Bonus points if you google “quiet fidget toys” and put out a few bowls of them at your next board meeting.

Paul Jackson, Jr. is a accomplished composer, arranger, producer, and guitarist. Born and raised in Los Angeles into a musical family, Jackson majored in music at the University of Southern California and became Artist in Residence at the USC Thornton School of Music in 2016. Jackson was one of the most prolific R&B guitarists of the 1970's and 80's, performing with artists such as Michael Jackson, the Temptations, Luther Vandross, Bobby Womack, Patrice Rushen, the Pointer Sisters, Chicago, and Whitney Houston, among many others. An accomplished recording artist in his own right, Jackson's 1988 album I Came to Play was nominated for a GRAMMY Award.
