Roots 1977- Shot of espresso is freshly downed, cracks knuckles, let's go. Today your decade under the influence crew takes on the mini series Roots, which came into our living rooms for 8 nights starting on jan 23 1977. I remember watching at least some of this with my parents and four sisters at the young age of 6, so I think it was probably mandatory family viewing, in mine and in most cool family homes. It is a lil interesting to think how everyone read about this in their TV guides or in the newspapers, and adjusted their schedules to make eight nights of this, and get the complete story. I'm sure they talked about on the tv too, but this was of course before video stores or streaming so you really had to make n effort to plop down and absorb all that was put into bringing Alex Haley's huge best selling story of his family history of surviving the slave trade. A massively important thing for America to look at and talk about, so I'm very glad it was taken so seriously by all involved. So much acting talent in here, and of course it all starts with chief engineer Geordie La Forge. This is LeVar Burton's first acting gig right outta college, way before he got us all pumped about reading, or flew starships, he left such an impression in his portrayal of Kunte Kinte, that we all forget he is only in the first 2 episodes. Also starring in Roots we have Mary Tyler Moore's boss Lou Grant as the reluctant slave boat owner. Ed Asner if were gettin technical. We have the mean baseball coach from bad news bears who died on the set of the movie the twilight zone, the guy from the rifleman, the guy from midnight express, the rad guy from iron eagle, the amazing Madge Sinclair, Olivia Cole, the kick ass Ben Vereen as chicken George (Fosse hands), and Commander Adama himself, to name just a few. Shit, don't forget John Amos as older Kunta, also Mr. flipping Brady plays a real asshole in this. Many of these amazing actors lend their talents to play some of the worst people on the planet. It really is a magnificent mini series with amazing music by Quincy Jones in the first episode, annnnnnnnnnnnnnd then the music does take a bit of a dive. There a few things that do remind us that this is a 70's made for TV movie. As progressive and amazing it is, and the fact that they got it made and had amerika look it's past right in the eye, and get a black eye back when they weren't even teaching our racist true beginnings in the history books at school yet. It is still not 100 percent free of issues. One such thing is the recap narrator talking about the triumph of the American spirit n shit, but don't worry cause we talk all about it, and seriously folks, as much as it is not, we would like this to be a conversion that continues, so. Thank you for listening, and if you like or don't like what you hear, or if we missed something cool, or whatever, please write on the socials and let us know.

The “Little Mermaid” is starring Halle Bailey as princess Ariel. Halle Bailey is a a beautiful black female with a beautiful voice. Princess Ariel is historically played by a white female. Although it should not be a surprise that Caucasian's and nonblack people are having an issue with a black, African American, character playing Ariel, I am surprised about the excitement that Black America is having for this Black female Princess. In my observations, since the age of 15, I feel that Disney strategically teases us with black characters. Disney rarely allows us to enjoy the black characters. I think Disney uses black characters as a selling tool. I believe that every time Disney uses a black character, they view it as an opportunity to display diversity. African Americans are never given a large black ensemble in Disney animations.  Therefore I believe that the “Little Mermaid” will be another Disney tease and let down. My first experience with the disappointment was in the “Lion King” movie. In the “Lion King” film we had James Earl Jones as Mufasa and Madge Sinclair as Sarabi. The film begins with two strong African American voices as King and Queen, yet the voice of young Simba is voiced by Jonathan Taylor Thomas, a white male. Although young Nala was voice by Laura Williams, a black female, Disney Strategically changed adult Nala to Moira Kelly, a nonblack female. I believe this was strategically done to match the adult voice of Matthew Broderick. The cast was cleverly changed from a black King and Queen to a nonblack King and Queen. The next film is the “Princess and the Frog.” The beautiful black animation in the “Princess and the Frog” was quickly taken from us by the Princess being turned into a frog very early in the film. The Princess was given a nonblack Prince and a stereotypical familybackground. Her mother was was a seamstress to a rich, white male. Her father was the hard working Black man who never got the life he wanted. As we move to the movie “Soul,” we have Jamie Fox and Angela Basset being used to sell the film as a story about a black Jazz musician. Again we see the black Character quickly taken from us. He was given a weak, beta male personality. He was also emasculated by Disney. For the dominant portion of the film, the character had the voice of a white woman coming from his body. These tactics are strategically done by Disney to remove the blackness from the characters. In a change of companies, Sony Pictures did a similar thing in the film, “Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse.” In this film we have Myles Morales, an Afro Latino male. In the film credits, Shameik Moore was not labeled Spider-Man. He was listed as Myles Morales. Sony redirected the audience from the black character by, first, making him Afro Latino, then by adding multiple Spider-Man characters. Not only was all the other Spider-Man characters nonblack, one of the characters was even a female Spider-Man. Lastly, the actual film plot was more about the adult, white male Spider-Man than Myles Morales. In the film “Encanto” by Disney, Latinos are given the opportunity to have their culture beautifully displayed. The cast appears to be largely Latino. What I find most angering is that the film displays beautifully brown skin that is not African American.Disney's “The Proud Family” is a display of black stereotypes. I believed Disney uses this cartoon as a way of making fun of black people. This is why I'm not excited about the “Little Mermaid.”

Diving in quickly today we review Girl stroke boy 1971- An early transgender film from England. Speeding up time 1971-is a low budget film very vaguely about revolution, poetry, love , and vengeance. Ingmar Bergman's The Touch 1971 Finds Bibi Anderson, Elliot Gould, and Max Von Sidow, in relationship trouble, and Gould shouldn't be touching anyone here. Roy Scheider drives past a “chock full o nuts coffeehouse in 1973's classic film The seven-ups, and I have explain that it's real place and share it's weird jingle. John Voight is a journalist turned nazi hunter thanks to reading, in The Oddessa File 1974. John Wayne drinks boilermakers in London with Richard Attenborough in 1975's Brannigan. Mr. sycamore 1975- Jason Robards and Sandy Dennis Star in this one about Jason wanting to become a tree. In Shock waves 1977 Peter Cushing plays his 2nd fascist that year. In, A question of love 1978- Gena Rowlands and Jane Alexander star in a film about rad lesbian parents versus Ned Beatty and homophobia. Convoy 1978- working class truckers take on the man! Stars many peeps but Madge Sinclair is our fav. Finally we end with Yesterday's hero 1979- This ones got everything, pop music and soccer brought to you by Odin (Ian McShane) and Suzanne Somers. Thanks for listening.

The Beige and The Bold

Unedited, slightly incoherent, and mostly redundant, The Beige and The Bold Solo Sessions are episodes where I run through a show all on my own. I'm sorry, but I just don't know Ben Vereen and Madge Sinclair. This isn't a boast; it's a--conspicuous--hole in my pop culture knowledge. Like, my dad and I sit around and talk about actors in movies. I'm introducing him to Giancarlo Esposito. I don't know them that well. Ben Vereen is still acting and Madge Sinclair was in The Lion King and Look Who's Coming to Dinner. Not small roles. I always feel like Geordi is being handled with kid gloves and doesn't come across with any real personality because of it. All "Interface" tells us is that he didn't spring fully-formed from Zeus' forehead. But knowing which two humans f--had sex to make him doesn't actually develop Geordi as a character. We don't really learn anything about him. The Beige and The Bold is hosted on Anchor and is available on most podcasting platforms. New episodes are usually posted on Sunday nights at 9:00 PM CST. She wrote the book on TV writing … literally! And she also started what has become the most esteemed graduate school for television writing. This week Gray has a wonderful chat with author, writer, and professor Pamela Douglas. Born and raised in New York, Pamela Douglas wrote poetry, stories and plays, and was involved in journalism. Her work was published in small magazines, and won her some prizes. This led to a job offer across the country, as program director for experimental public TV station in Los Angeles. When the station went broke, a bold interview led to her being hired as an executive in feature film development at MCA-Universal. She honed her craft there, writing several unproduced features, but grew to realize that television was where she wanted to be. The first TV episode she ever wrote, for Trapper John M.D., won an Emmy® for actress Madge Sinclair, and Pamela was off to the races! She worked on many well-known shows, and was honored with many awards, such as a Humanitas Award for Between Mother and Daughter, an original drama which also won a nomination for a Writers Guild Award. Multiple Emmy nominations and awards from American Women in Radio and Television went to other dramas she has written. Seeing a need in the industry, Pamela started the TV writing program at the School of Cinematic Arts of the University of Southern California, and is now a tenured professor there. Her book, Writing the TV Drama Series: How to Succeed as a Professional Writer in TV is considered one of the premier books on the subject, and has just been updated with a third edition. You can find out more about her non-screenwriting works on her websites: http://pamdouglasbooks.com and http://pamdouglasart.com. Buy Gray's book for only $4.99! The Lion King's original songs were written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with a score by Hans Zimmer. The film features an ensemble voice cast that includes Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Moira Kelly, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, Robert Guillaume, Madge Sinclair (in her last film role), Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings. The story takes place in a kingdom of lions in Africa and was influenced by the Biblical stories of Joseph and Moses, and William Shakespeare's Hamlet. The Lion King tells the story of Simba (Swahili for lion), a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa, as King of the Pride Lands; however, after Simba's paternal uncle Scar murders Mufasa, Simba is manipulated into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile. For no good reason Jon Favreau remade it Gus Van Psycho style in 2019 with "realistic CGI" and it was horrendous. "When you think of garbage, think of Akeem!" Eddie Murphy was riding high through the 80s. John Landis, on the other hand, had had a string of flops, not to mention a very difficult Twilight Zone trial. Considering their success together with Trading Places, Murphy thought Landis could use a boost and brought him on to direct his fairy tale film Coming to America. It was the hit Landis needed, and yet another film cementing that Murphy was king of the box office. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we wrap up our Eddie Murphy series with Landis' 1988 film, Coming to America. We talk about why the film doesn't hold up that well for us now nearly 30 years after its release, even if it did seem to hold up more at the time. We chat about the script problems and director/actor relationship problems this film had, and how things ended up. We look at the talent and what they're bringing to the table – Murphy, Arsenio Hall, John Amos, James Earl Jones, Madge Sinclair, Shari Headley, Eriq La Salle and more. And speaking of talent, we discuss Rick Baker and his amazing effects work to transform Murphy and Hall into several other characters and how these not only hold up for us but also how they triggered an entirely new direction for Murphy's career to head. And we talk about the music and how 80s it feels. It's a fun conversation about a film that neither of us connected with nearly 30 years after we first saw the film. But it's still fun to watch and discuss, so check it out!
