Two-time Emmy and Three-time NAACP Image Award-winning television Executive Producer Rushion McDonald interviewed Karon Joseph Riley.  The co-star of BET+ "The Black Hamptons" will soon be releasing his first book, “Keep Pedaling The Things I Learned on My Bike.” Karon Joseph Riley was born a star; at least, that is what his mother often told him while growing up in Detroit, Michigan. Karon wanted to be an actor as early as the first grade when he played Puss in Boots in a stage play. Soon after his theatre debut, his athletic talents also emerged. Being the crowd pleaser, he entertained everybody with his athletic prowess. He graduated from the University of Minnesota and remains the All-Time Sack leader and All-American football player. His performance on the gridiron stage led him to become a 4th Round Draft pick of the Chicago Bears. He played seven years between the NFL, CFL, and AFL. After his career ran, he set his sights on Hollywood as he always promised. Through sports and lessons from his mother, Karon was taught that hard work is the only way to make the blueprints that God downloaded into his work. Working off of his faith, he took acting classes in his off-seasons in Los Angeles. Once he officially retired, he dropped the football body and replaced it with the body of a leading man. As a testament to his work, ethnic booked his first speaking role in Russ Parr's classic romantic comedy “35 and Ticking,” starring Kevin Hart and Meagan Goode. After that he booked steady roles on multiple networks on shows like “Single Ladies,” and “Necessary Roughness”. Now a solid network talent, Karon set himself up for a huge year run with a role in Will Packer's feature film “Little” starring Issa Ray and Regina Hall. After that box office exposure, Karon booked two series regular roles on two hit shows. One was “Ambitions,” with Brian J. White and Robin Givens, and the other was “Saints and Sinners,” with Clifton Powell and Vanessa Bell Calloway, respectively. He is currently starring in the NAACP-nominated series The Black Hamptons on BET.Support the show: https://www.steveharveyfm.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My only competition was myself. And I just kept saying, You just need one spot. You just need one scholarship. So, when it was my turn, I danced for Jesus, honey. I danced like I had never danced before.      Vanessa Bell CallowayLeaving her hometown of Cleveland, Ohio and following her dream, Vanessa Bell Calloway arrived in New York City in the late 70s with grit and determination to pursue a career in the arts. With $50 to her name, Vanessa spent a day of zigzagging the streets by foot starting at Times Square 42rd Street all the way to 95th Street, applying for jobs to support herself. Late that night, she landed her first job at The Cellar, my father's popular Upper West Side restaurant. The connections she made there opened opportunities that helped launch Vanessa's career.  Fast forward more than a few decades and Vanessa Bell Calloway, as she is known since marrying prominent anesthesiologist Anthony Calloway 34 years ago, has enjoyed a career that spans the stage, both big and small. She has earned eight NAACP Image award nominations and won the NAACP Theater Award for Best Actress for her critically-acclaimed role as Zora Neale Hurston in Letters from Zora. She was an original cast member in the Broadway hit, Dream Girls and her resume encompasses a screen career that begins with the daytime soap opera, All My Children, to roles in Coming to America, What's Love Got To Do With It, and Crimson Tide. along with several TV credits. Most recently, Vanessa stars in the BET mini-series, The Black Hamptons, as the shrewd matriarch, Carolyn Britton. Trust me, you do not want to mess with Vanessa's character!  As busy as Vanessa is with work, she and her husband, Tony, find time to travel and recently spent time yachting in Italy at the invitation of Earvin "Magic" Johnson and his gracious wife, Cookie. We hear about that inspirational experience as will as their trip to Martha's Vineyard last summer and their strong team approach to marriage. As South LA residents and long-time commercial property owners in Leimert Park, Vanessa discusses the changes in the neighborhood over the past several years.  Join me, your host Brad Johnson, at the corner table for a glimpse into the world of my lovely, long-time friend and her journey! * * * Instagram: Corner Table Talk  and Post and Beam Hospitality LinkedIn: Brad Johnson E.Mail:  brad@postandbeamhospitality.comFor more information on host Brad Johnson or to join our mailing list, please visit: https://postandbeamhospitality.com/ Theme Music: Bryce Vine Corner Table™ is a trademark of Post & Beam Hospitality LLCSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

“Submission” has become a buzzword of sorts. At some point in the dating process its mentioned by us (men) as a desirable trait. But when we do, eyebrows are raised, eyes start rolling, and in most cases, an argument is about to ensue. It’s a frustrating conversation that women seem to go apeshit over. They hear us say we want a submissive woman and they envision a man wanting a woman like to Vanessa Bell Calloway’s character in “Coming to America”, the type of woman who answers every question with, “whatever you like” and will hop on one foot while barking like a dog (if necessary) to please her man. So, let’s explore this relationship dynamic and discuss what qualifies a man to lead and a woman to submit. In today’s metro-sexual charged society and apparent feminization of black men in the media, do black women even believe the black man is capable? Or maybe something is getting lost in translation between ‘Mars’ and ‘Venus’, and women need a clear und [...]

Tune in to The Gist of Freedom, The Black History Internet Radio show with host Shellie Gaines as we welcome Award winning Playwright & Author Gabrielle Pina! Gabrielle will talk to Shellie about her play "Letters From Zora" ~Starring Vanessa Bell Calloway. Letters From Zora is currently running at the crossroadstheatrecompany.org! Review: “Letters from Zora: In Her Own Words,” for which the meticulous and poetic Gabrielle Denise Pina, a novelist in her own right, collected Zora's massive correspondence and crafted it into a monologue delivered at New Brunswick's Crossroads Theatre with wit, sincerity, and majesty by Vanessa Bell Calloway. Calloway's feat of memory is stunning enough. In more than 100  minutes, without a chance to pause, let alone to stop for an intermission, the actress never stumbled, missed a cue for transition, or failed to articulate the genius, both as a writer, and as a woman determined to live independently according to her own principles, of Zora Neale Hurston. Calloway's performance is enchanting. Besides being fluid and heartfelt, it reminds us, thanks to Pina's excellent editing and composition, how extraordinary and how pioneering Zora was. Everything Zora for stood and fervently believed is revealed in Pina's text, and Calloway magically embodies the grit and strongmindedness of Zora along with her femininity, abundant sense of humor, and disdain for anything false or condescending. Yes, the words as Pina's title tells us plainly, are Zora's, but Pina is the one who had to take a volume of letters and make them into one cohesive, listenable and "entertaining" work."
