No one has to think Love Story is a good movie to acknowledge that it's a beloved romance that made an absolute killing at the box office 55 years ago. The AFI remembers Arthur Hiller's film fondly too. It's just that we Ellises aren't at all sorry to say that we aren't as enamored as millions of other people have been. It feels rushed and story beats aren't allowed to breathe, plus---Oscar nominations or not---the performances certainly weren't award-worthy. The title of the movie is appropriate too because the overly-earnest story is focused on the love between Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw...and absolutely nothing else. In any case, as Valentine's Day approaches, settle in for our 644th episode about the preppy boy and the sassy girl who headline Old Love Month here on Have You Ever Seen. Pre-Loved Podcast is a weekly vintage fashion interview show, with guests you'll want to go thrifting with! For more Pre-Loved Podcast, subscribe to our Patreon! Today's episode is with Denise Wingate, the costume designer behind Daisy Jones & the Six! If you haven't seen it yet – run don't walk, the costuming is fabulous – Daisy Jones & the Six is about the rise and fall of a fictional 1970s rock band, based on the novel, written in rock documentary style, by Taylor Jenkins Reid. A Los Angeles native, Denise began her career designing costumes and touring with none other than The Bangles, before segueing into television costuming. Throughout her career, she's always prioritized working with vintage – and because of her true love for vintage fashion and music history, it's really clear that this project was an ultimate dream role for her.  We talk about all this, and the incredible vintage looks in Daisy Jones & the Six, on today's show –   let's just dive right in! DISCUSSED IN THE EPISODE: [3:09] Denise moved to Hollywood at 16 and grew up attending new wave shows. [4:28] Denise goes on a world tour with the Bangles, working as their stylist.  [8:51] Costume design is about developing a character through clothing, and Denise's process for Daisy Jones & the Six.  [13:57] The inspiration for young Daisy Jones was a young Joni Mitchell, young Linda Ronstadt – and then she morphed into Janis Joplin and Stevie Nicks when she becomes a rock star. [14:40] The inspiration for Camila Dunne was a young Ali MacGraw, and then she grows into Bianca Jagger in her rockstar wife era.  [14:50] Suki Waterhouse's character, cool-girl keyboardist Karen, was inspired by Patti Smith, Joan Jett, and Suzie Quatro. [15:52] Staying true to fashion moments mentioned in the book, like Daisy's first recording session outfit, or the beaded kaftan she wears in the pool. [18:45] Denise estimates she had to pull about 1,500 looks for this show! [20:15] Her sourcing process for finding special vintage pieces for the show. [23:40] Daisy Jones' coat collection – that choice for the character, and Denise's favorites, including this one that she sourced in Paris. [26:11] Camilla's transformation into Bianca Jagger would not be complete without this leopard print dress from Pickwick Vintage Market. [28:32] Denise found a patchwork leather jacket from Gandalf the Wizard in Long Beach, which she used for Graham Dunne. [30:27] Denise found a North Beach leather whipstitch white suit that Karen wore for the Aurora cover shoot. [31:44] A lot of the jewelry on the show originally belonged to Denise's grandparents, including Daisy's squash blossom necklaces. [32:45] In the 70s, rockstars would have been wearing vintage from the 30s, 40s, and older, so Denise used those kinds of pieces in the show, too.  [35:27] Daisy Jones' on-stage persona, and how they used costuming to bring that out.  [36:50] The final on-stage look for Daisy Jones was a gold vintage Halston dress that they turned into a cape, and a 1930s crochet metallic dress underneath. [44:55] The beauty and creativity in re-use.  [49:17] Shopping estate sales with her son, also a vintage shopper, in New Orleans. Jane Alexander - The Great White Hope 3. Ali MacGraw - Love Story 4. Sarah Miles - Ryan's Daughter 5. Carrie Snodgress - Diary of a Mad Housewife - In 1971 Glenda Jackson won her first Oscar for Women in Love, a film that was very controversial for the time. It was banned in many countries due to its nudity and male on male naked wrestling (oh my). Jackson was not present at the ceremony as she believed, for both her Oscar wins, that she did not deserve the award. You have a lot of very different performances here and it's tricky picking which was truly the ‘best.' Sarah Miles in Ryan's Daughter was an amazing performance but the movie was borderline hated by critics. This was Jane Alexander's film debut reprising her Tony winning role in The Great White Hope. Not bad for your first film! Ali MacGraw starred opposite Ryan O'Neal in Love Story playing a tragic Romeo & Juliet figure. Finally Carrie Snodgress was nominated for Diary of a Mad Housewife, a drama/comedy film that was insane for all the right and wrong reasons. The epic consists of three movements, "Life Seeker," primarily written by Jon Anderson, "Disillusion" mostly written by Squire, and "Würm," largely written by Howe. I've Seen All Good PeopleThis is another lengthy epic of a song, not uncommon for Yes with it's prog rock sensibilities.  Jon Anderson and Chris Squire wrote this song and it's two movements.  The first movement, "Your Move," uses chess as a metaphor for relationships, and was released as a single which became a top 40 hit.  The second movement, "All Good People," would be re-incorporated into the song when played on FM rock stations at the time.  It references John Lennon in several places. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the motion picture “Love Story” This romantic tragedy starred Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neil.  It was released in December 1970 and was a big grossing film in February. STAFF PICKS:Temptation Eyes by The Grass RootsWayne's staff pick is a California group which charted frequently in the early 70's, including this song which went to number 15.  The band originally was founded by Lou Adler and the songwriting duo of P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri. If You Could Read My Mind by Gordon Lightfoot Brian's staff pick is the well-known Canadian singer-songwriter.  This song was inspired by Lightfoot's divorce.  It has been recorded over 100 times since Lightfoot wrote it by artists like Liza Minnelli, Barbara Streisand, Glen Campbell, and Johnny Mathis.Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? by ChicagoBruce brings us the first song the band recorded together on their first album in 1969.  It wasn't released as a single until late 1970 after "Make Me Smile" became a hit.  This encouraged the group to go back to this song and cut it down to single length.  Robert Lamm wrote and sang lead on this song, inspired by a quip he received from a Brooklyn movie theater usher. What Is Life by George HarrisonRob's finishes the staff picks with the “quiet” Beatle.  It is off his triple album "All Things Must Pass," and this second single from the album went into the top 10 on the U.S. charts.  Eric Clapton played on this album, and it was produced by Phil Spector.   It is a love song that appears to be directed both at a woman and a deity. INSTRUMENTALTRACK:The Clap by YesThis live instrumental piece was brought to the group by Steve Howe, and appears on The Yes Album.   It was written in celebration of the birth of Howe's son, Dylan.

Movies have been a part of our lives since the late 1800s. Historians will debate the difference between a motion picture and a full-length movie, the exact date they were produced, and whether they were even worthy of consideration of either title.  All that aside, there are some films that are considered timeless classics, that transcend age and time itself, and are just as poignant and relevant today as the day they were made…movies like Gone with the Wind, Citizen Kane, Casablanca, and The Sound of Music, just to name a few. I'm sure you're thinking of a few of your own choices right now. Well, during my Senior Year of high school, the movie, Love Story, hit the big screen, touching the hearts of every dating couple during that time. It starred Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal, and was often compared to a modern-day version of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, with its inclusion of ultimate devotion, love, sacrifice, and the death of a lover. I seriously doubt that Love Story will ever be considered a timeless classic to most movie experts, but the phrase from the movie, “Love means never having to say you're sorry,” will be forever remembered for the tears and sadness it created on all who watched the film. Now, while it may have been a catchy phrase in its day, it's just not true or realistic. Love does mean having to say you're sorry, along with, I was wrong, forgive me, you're right, you're important, I care what you think, I respect you, and so much more. And love, real love, a godly love, should be freely given with no conditions, restrictions, or limitations to everyone at all times because that's the way God intended. So why would God want it that way? Why would God ask us to do something that is often difficult or far more than we can humanly do? What are the benefits, and how could it change our world? Well, that's what I'll be talking about on my podcast today. We're going to look at God's Word, listen to His heart, and discover together: Why We Should Love One Another. Stay with me, because that's coming up on this episode of Living Lite Today.

WELCOME TO NEW YORK'S LEGENDARY HOTEL FOR WOMEN Liberated from home and hearth by World War I, politically enfranchised and ready to work, women arrived to take their place in the dazzling new skyscrapers of Manhattan. But they did not want to stay in uncomfortable boarding houses. They wanted what men already had—exclusive residential hotels with daily maid service, cultural programs, workout rooms, and private dining. Built in 1927 at the height of the Roaring Twenties, the Barbizon Hotel was intended as a safe haven for the “Modern Woman” seeking a career in the arts. It became the place to stay for any ambitious young woman hoping for fame and fortune. Sylvia Plath fictionalized her time there in The Bell Jar, and, over the years, its almost 700 tiny rooms with matching floral curtains and bedspreads housed Titanic survivor Molly Brown; actresses Grace Kelly, Liza Minnelli, Ali MacGraw, Jaclyn Smith, Phylicia Rashad, and Cybill Shepherd; writers Joan Didion, Diane Johnson, Gael Greene, and Meg Wolitzer; and many more. Mademoiselle magazine boarded its summer interns there, as did Katharine Gibbs Secretarial School its students and the Ford Modeling Agency its young models. Before the hotel's residents were household names, they were young women arriving at the Barbizon with a suitcase and a dream. Not everyone who passed through the Barbizon's doors was destined for success—for some it was a story of dashed hopes—but until 1981, when men were finally let in, the Barbizon offered its residents a room of their own and a life without family obligations or expectations. It gave women a chance to remake themselves however they pleased; it was the hotel that set them free. No place had existed like it before or has since. Beautifully written and impeccably researched, The Barbizon weaves together a tale that has, until now, never been told. It is both a vivid portrait of the lives of these young women who came to New York looking for something more, and an epic history of women's ambition --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pbliving/support

Trucking's rise in pop culture was well underway when “Convoy” was released in late 1975, capturing the hearts of not just truckers but many Americans. The song, heavily laden with CB slang and conversation, tells the story of a spontaneous truck convoy that clashes with authorities. It was by C.W. McCall, who was actually a character co-created and voiced by advertising executive Bill Fries. “It hit at a conjuncture of a lot of different things,” said Todd Uhlman, assistant professor of U.S. socio-cultural history of the University of Dayton. “First of all, the trucker movie had really begun to take off.” “Duel” had come out in 1971 and “White Line Fever” debuted in 1975. “Simultaneously, the CB had really begun to expand outside of the trucker circle and become a kind of pop culture phenomenon.” The song led to the movie “Convoy,” released in June 1978. Directed by Sam Peckinpah, it starred Kris Kristofferson, Ali MacGraw and Ernest Borgnine. That movie and perhaps the most famous of movies involving trucking, “Smokey & the Bandit,” also released in 1978, solidified the image of trucker as not just a highway cowboy but an iconic American rebel, bucking political and regulatory authorities, Uhlman said. From its opening in 1928 to the present, Paulina brings us the evolution of both the place and the women who stayed there. Located in the heart of New York City, it drew women from all over the country. Each one brought ‘a suitcase and a dream.' Paulina delves into how the Barbizon was supposedly setting women free. And explains the reality of how it didn't. Some made it, others did not. Known as a safe haven for the 'Modern Woman' seeking a career, the women all were expected to have the same goal. That goal being one of marriage, family and suburban living. Some of the famous among its residents were Sylvia Plath, Joan Crawford, Grace Kelly, Liza Minelli, Ali MacGraw, Cybill Shepherd and Joan Didion. The Barbizon, Paulina Bren Liberated from home and hearth by World War I, politically enfranchised and ready to work, women arrived to take their place in the dazzling new skyscrapers of Manhattan. But they did not want to stay in uncomfortable boarding houses. They wanted what men already had—exclusive residential hotels with daily maid service, cultural programs, workout rooms, and private dining.Built in 1927 at the height of the Roaring Twenties, the Barbizon Hotel was intended as a safe haven for the “Modern Woman” seeking a career in the arts. Before the hotel’s residents were household names, they were young women arriving at the Barbizon with a suitcase and a dream. Not everyone who passed through the Barbizon’s doors was destined for success—for some it was a story of dashed hopes—but until 1981, when men were finally let in, the Barbizon offered its residents a room of their own and a life without family obligations or expectations. It gave women a chance to remake themselves however they pleased; it was the hotel that set them free. No place had existed like it before or has since.Beautifully written and impeccably researched, The Barbizon weaves together a tale that has, until now, never been told. It is both a vivid portrait of the lives of these young women who came to New York looking for something more, and an epic history of women’s ambition.Savage Son, Jack CarrDeep in the wilds of Siberia, a woman is on the run, pursued by a man harboring secrets – a man intent on killing her.Half a world away, James Reece is recovering from brain surgery in the Montana wilderness, slowly putting his life back together with the help of investigative journalist Katie Buranek and his longtime friend and SEAL teammate Raife Hastings.Unbeknown to them, the Russian mafia has set their sights on Reece in a deadly game of cat and mouse. In his most visceral and heart-pounding thriller yet, Jack Carr explores the darkest instincts of humanity through the eyes of a man who has seen both the best and the worst of it.

Today is the 82nd birthday of a true original, Ali MacGraw. She didn't only represent the late 60s and early 70s Bohemian-meets-American-Prep style: she was one of the people that invented it. Looking back at photos and movies of her from that time makes you want to embrace winter, if not only for the chance to wear chunky knits and prep school blazers. Her effortless chic and classic relaxed looks makes me want to rake leaves or go clam digging or play touch football with my family. Maybe not the last one all that much, but basically, I want to live inside a J.Crew catalog. The world is a better place because she is in it. Now I've Heard Everything

Happy Valentine's Day weekend! I thought this would be an appropriate time to bring back an interview with the author of one of the great love stories of our time -- Love Story, by Erich Segal. His book became a huge bestseller in 1970, and even bigger box office movie smash in 1971, starring Ali MacGraw and Ryan O'Neal as the star-crossed lovers. I met him in 1988, when he published his latest novel, called Doctors. But as you are about to hear, Segal was still both honored and haunted by the success of Love Story.

Do you remember the 1970 movie called “Love Story?” Romantic, gushing...garbage. :) At the end there is the dying gal - played by Ali MacGraw - who says that now renown statement to her husband - played by Ryan O’Neal, "Love means never having to say you're sorry." Gag!Two years later, Ryan O’Neal was in another movie with Barbra Streisand, “What's Up, Doc?: And in this film, Streisand's character repeated the very same line to O’Neal. This time, however, O'Neal had an answer. "That's the dumbest thing I ever heard," he said.I agree! Why? Because when you truly love someone, you end up saying “I’m sorry” a lot! Too often!Conflict is part of relationships, unfortunately. It’s part of our sinful nature. We are self-centered. We get stressed and grumpy. We project emotions onto other people. AND…. I’ll let you in on a little secret: EVEN CHRISTIANS STRUGGLE WITH THESE THINGS!!! By the way, if you’re looking for a church that has absolutely no problems in it, you’ll have to find one that has no people in it. As long as churches have people, there will be conflict. The tragic part isn’t that there would be conflict - but that even as God’s own people, we don’t know how to handle conflict. So here’s the thing: when believers lack the ability to say we are sorry, even minor offenses can accumulate enough weight to sink a relationship. And when you’re talking about people for whom Jesus prayed would be unified, that’s the tragedy.Last week, we saw how our words can damage relationships. And we ended with a couple of verses in the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus was telling us the importance of being reconciled quickly with our brother who has something against us. Notice he brings up a scenario NOT where we have something against our brother - but were we have DONE something TO our brother - and he has something against US. Here is where Jesus is telling us to run to the fire, to take responsibility and to go seek reconciliation with the one you have wronged. It seems like it should be an easy thing, to go and say “I’m sorry.” But what I’ve found is that in our culture we have somehow lost the art of the apology. THIS is what I want to study this morning simply because as your pastor, I want us to have the ability to acknowledge when we have done wrong and to be mature enough in our spiritual lives that we would be willing AND ABLE to do what is necessary on our part to re-establish love and brotherhood amongst God’s church. We must learn the art of the Christian Apology.

AWARD-WINNING DOCUMENTARY FEATURE “AWAKENING IN TAOS” MAKES PASADENA DEBUT AT RED NATION INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, NOV 16 Film tells the story of social activist and patron of the arts Mabel Dodge Luhan, and her marriage to Tiwa Indian Tony Lujan of Taos Pueblo: “A woman 100 years ahead of her time” “Awakening in Taos”, an award-winning film by Mark Gordon and narrated by Ali MacGraw will screen at this year’s Red Nation Film Festival on Friday November 16, at 6 PM at the LAEMMLE PLAYHOUSE 7, 673 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91101 The timing of this film’s release is serendipitous with major stories in today’s news including the nomination of a Woman President and the conflict in North Dakota. This story is set almost one hundred years ago and it involves a strong independent woman who marries a Native American and fights with his tribe to protect 600,000 acres of sacred tribal land from private sale to squatters. Like the Standing Rock Sioux, their sacred sites are desecrated and their religious practices are threatened. Taos Pueblo fought for 64 years for the return of 48,000 acres and their sacred Blue Lake, granted to the tribe by Spain in the 1500’s. It was illegally annexed as part of a National Forrest under Teddy Roosevelt. After filing many civil suits against the US Government Taos Pueblo finally succeeded by filing a First Amendment rights suit. This case was won on the right of religious freedom violated by the US Government, as they prevented the tribe from observing sacred spiritual practices. In 1970, Richard Nixon signed legislation, the first instance in history where the US Government returned Native land taken illegally. Perhaps there is a message in this story that could help the Standing Rock Sioux get the US Government to honor its original treaty with the Sioux! “Awakening in Taos” follows the personal evolution of Mabel Dodge Luhan as a writer, salon hostess, art patroness, social activist and a resident of New Mexico. Born in Buffalo, New York, Mabel was a woman unique to her time. Her influence extended into the world of arts, music, literature and activism for social change. In her late 30s she experienced a life-altering arrival into a small town in Northern New Mexico and embraced the Taos Pueblo Indians in a way that seized the attention of the artistic and literary world. Her unconventional marriage to Antonio Lujan, a full-blooded Tiwa Indian from Taos Pueblo, created a revolutionary bridge between two cultures. Mabel and Tony helped to defeat federal legislation in 1924 that would have taken away 600,000 acres of sacred land belonging to the 19 tribes of New Mexico. Mabel lured progressive thinkers and artists, including D.H. Lawrence, Aldous Huxley, Willa Cather, Dorothy Brett, Ansel Adams, Georgia O'Keeffe and others to the remote town of Taos to attend her salons. Many of these visitors stayed for periods of time and several remained their entire lives. Mabel's home and salons made an extraordinary contribution to the culture of Taos County and the State of New Mexico. Luhan was a writer and advocate for the arts, women’s rights and Native American culture in a time when women were still fighting for the right to vote. Shot entirely in New Mexico with a local cast and crew, the film features breathtaking cinematography and aerial footage of Taos landscapes and landmarks. These physical features produced a visual response captured in 20th-century paintings and photos by Mabel’s guests. It was a book, “Edge of Taos Desert: An Escape to Reality” written by Mabel herself that piqued Gordon’s interest and set him off on a ten-year journey to get the book transformed into a film worthy of the topic. Filmmaker Gordon assembled a large team of writers, editors, art experts, historians and documentary producers to bring the many varied details of Luhan’s life into sharp focus. Actress Ali MacGraw happened to sit next to him on a plane and they began discussing the book, which she already loved. She offered to read some pages at a fundraiser in Taos and then signed on when the project was green lighted. Through a biographer of Luhan’s, Gordon met actress Leslie Harrell Dillen who wrote and performed a one-woman show portraying Mabel. She joined the production and appears as Mabel’s voice reading her words from books and letters. “Awakening in Taos: The Mabel Dodge Luhan Story” won Best Feature made in New Mexico at the 2015 Santa Fe Film Festival. The film has received special recognition and an award for Best Writing at the Hollywood Independent International Film awards. Awakening in Taos was produced in partnership with New Mexico PBS. The film will be shown November 16th at 6:00 pm at the at the Red Nation Film Festival on Friday November 16, at 6 PM at the LAEMMLE PLAYHOUSE 7, 673 E Colorado Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91101 For tickets and information: http://www.rednationff.com/awakening-in-taos/ Or call (310) 478-3836.
