Suit up, listeners, because this week we're flying high (or maybe just hovering awkwardly) with The Meteor Man and Blankman. That's right. On this episode of Not A Bomb—Movie Matchup Edition, the guys tackle a pair of African-American-led superhero films. Troy and Brad are joined by their sidekick in film discussion, a man who knows all things comic books and superheroes, Mr Korean Kool himself, John.Listen as we dive into these ‘90s superhero gems that weren't afraid to get a little weird. What happens when a mild-mannered teacher gains superpowers from a mysterious green meteor—only to discover his abilities include talking to dogs and making plants grow? And what's the deal with Blankman's unorthodox crime-fighting tactics and his hilariously named sidekick, Other Guy? Plus, what exactly is going on with Blankman's quirky robot companion, J-5?We'll dive into the neon gang wars and the inexplicably star-studded casts (hello, James Earl Jones rocking that wig) and determine if these films are bombs. More importantly, the guys decide which film is the champion for the week. It's an episode full of laughs, nostalgia, and plenty of homemade superhero charm. Don't miss it!"The Meteor Man is directed by Robert Townsend and stars Robert Townsend, Marla Gibb, Eddie Griffin, Robert Guillaume, James Earl Jones, Bill Cosby, Another Bad Creation, Luther Vandross, Sinbad, Naughty by Nature, Cypress Hill, Big Daddy Kane, and Faizon Jone.Blankman is directed Mike Binder and stars Damon Wayans, David Alan Grier, Robin Givens, Jon Polito, and Jason Alexander. Not A Bomb has has plenty of spooky designs in our Merch store! Today is a bit of a surprise entry in the list of Beeper Bob Classics as it's not a movie the boys thought would resonate with the man. Big Fish starring Ewan McGregor, Albert Finney, Helena Bonham Carter, Danny DeVito, and many more. Big Fish follows the many craftfully told stories of Edward Bloom and how they affected the lives of those who knew him. A heartfelt movie about the many dynamics of a relationship between a man and his father, Big Fish certainly has earned itself a reputation on the streets, but can it get a good score in the Where To Stick It arena?Support the showCatch new episodes of the Where to Stick It Podcast every Tuesday and Thursday. 99 Cent Rental returns from its Halloween hiatus with a Van Damme good time as we drill down to the core of the spirit of this podcast with a look at a movie so patently ridiculous and offensive that we can't fully understand how it's simultaneously so entertaining and appealing. Death Warrant represents some firsts and lasts. It's ostensibly the first movie to truly put Jean-Claude Van Damme over as a viable box office draw and positions him to be the prime action movie star of the 90's. It also represents the final death rattle of Cannon Films after a decade of bad business practice finally caught up with them. Featuring a performance from Robert Guillaume that this movie clearly does not deserve, it's also full of side characters that are every bit as magnetic as JCVD. "One of the things I love about looking back at 80s television is you get to see some early and amazing young stars and very exciting stunt casting."It's Guest Stars Galore on 80s TV Ladies! We're taking a nostalgic trip back to the iconic 80s sitcom "A Different World." Susan and Sharon debate -- and celebrate -- the amazing roster of guest stars that walked the halls of Hillman College during the six seasons of A Different World. As one of the only black-centered shows of its time, A Different World was in many ways “the only game in town” for a certain generation of black performers, and under show-runner Debbie Allen it became a real showcase for black celebrities who -- even in the 80's and 90's -- didn't have as many opportunities when it came to network television exposure.Legendary performers—such as Lena Horne, Josephine Premice, Patti LaBelle, Diahann Carroll, Robert Guillaume, Gladys Knight—and modern stars like Whoopi Goldberg, Raven Symone, Halle Berry… and Tupac Shakur—found a spotlight. Susan and Sharon get out their red pens and grade books and fight it out, narrowing down who will finally be “Best in Class” -- The Top Ten Guest Stars of A Different World!THE CONVERSATIONTHE TOP TWO: How Patti LaBelle and Diahann Carroll are so hilarious -- and perfectly cast -- as the moms of Dwayne and Whitley: two parents from very “different worlds”.Whoopi Goldberg was the secret weapon that allowed the show to do an “AIDS Episode” (“If I Should Die Before I Wake” S4; EP23). Once she signed on, the network couldn't say no. It became the highest rated episode of the season.Josephine Premice played the art dealer that Whitley works for in S4 -- and is the mother of writer/showrunner Susan Fales-Hill! (She later plays Dwayne and Whitley's landlord in S6!)The beautiful Billy Dee Williams plays a former baseball player (S6; EP23) who decides to finish college -- and ends up in the classroom of his old flame: Leslie Uggams! But is it a true 80s TV Ladies show? Sharon calls out showrunner Debbie Allen. She directed 83 episodes of the show (104 were directed by women) and steered it through most of its run.Jennifer Lewis -- as Dean Dorothy Dandridge Davidson -- hits the heights in the Lena Horne Episode -- “A Rock, A River, A Lena” (S6; E22)Susan calls out Gladys Knight in “Three Girls Three” (S2; EP5) -- a classic 80's stunt casting coup that is everything you want it to be!Can you believe it? Susan also loves a very “guy-centric” episode: “Citizen Wayne” (S2; EP21) -- starring Jesse Jackson. But this isn't on Sharon's list for reasons…Who are the TWO GUEST STARS who get cut from the list? One is a guy… And one is… ALSO A GUY!So -- join Susan and Sharon as they talk Brian's Song, Kris Kross, Tisha Campbell, high-kicks, the “Evolution of Whitley,” Gilbert Gottfried, “checking the gate” -- and showering with Blair Underwear (we mean Under-wood!).AUDIOGRAPHYFind out more about “A Different World College Tour 2024” at adwtour.com.Read about Whoopi Goldberg and the A Different World AIDS episode at Hollywood Reporter.Read an oral history of A Different World in Vanity Fair.Watch A Different World -- streaming on MAX.Find out more about A Different World at the official Facebook page.Check out Tammy at the true-crime podcast: Grits with a Side of Murder.Sign up to nominate 80s TV Ladies for a Podcast Award! The Lion King is a 1994 American animated musical drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The 32nd Disney animated feature film and the fifth produced during the Disney Renaissance, it is inspired by William Shakespeare's Hamlet with elements from the Biblical stories of Joseph and Moses and Disney's 1942 film Bambi. The film was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff (in their feature directorial debuts) and produced by Don Hahn, from a screenplay written by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton. The film features an ensemble voice cast that includes Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, and Robert Guillaume. Its original songs were written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with a score by Hans Zimmer.   The film has led to many derived works, such as a Broadway adaptation in 1997; two direct-to-video follow-ups—the sequel, The Lion King II: Simba's Pride (1998), and the prequel/parallel, The Lion King 1½ (2004); two television series, Timon and Pumbaa and The Lion Guard; and a photorealistic remake in 2019, which also became the highest-grossing animated film at the time of its release. In 2016, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".  The Lion King is the first Disney film to have been dubbed in Zulu, the only African language aside from Arabic to have been used for a feature-length Disney dub.     The Lion King is a 2019 American musical drama film directed and co-produced by Jon Favreau, written by Jeff Nathanson, and produced by Walt Disney Pictures and Fairview Entertainment. It is a photorealistic computer-animated remake of Disney's traditionally animated 1994 film of the same name. The film stars the voices of Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, with Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and James Earl Jones reprising his role from the original film.   Plans for a remake of 1994's The Lion King were confirmed in September 2016 with Favreau attached to directed following box office successes for Disney remakes such as The Jungle Book (2016), which was also directed by Favreau. Disney hired Nathanson to write the screenplay in October 2016. Favreau was inspired by certain roles of characters in the Broadway adaptation and developed upon elements of the original film's story. Much of the main cast signed in early 2017, and principal photography began in mid-2017 on a blue screen stage in Los Angeles. The "virtual-reality tools" utilized in The Jungle Book's cinematography were used to a greater degree during filming of The Lion King. Composers Hans Zimmer, Elton John, and lyricist Tim Rice, all of whom worked on the original's soundtrack, returned to compose the score alongside Knowles-Carter, who assisted John in the reworking of the soundtrack and wrote a new song for the film, titled "Spirit", which she also performed. The film serves as the final credit for editor Mark Livolsi, and it is dedicated to his memory. With an estimated budget of around $260 million, The Lion King is one of the most expensive films ever made.   Opening Credits; Introduction (.37); Background History (1:02.08); The Lion King (19940 Trailer (1;05.30); The Original (1:06.41); Let's Rate (1:51.58); INTERMISSON:  (1:56.58) Introducing a Film (2:07.01); The Lion King (2019) Film Trailer (2:04.06); Lights, Camera, Action (2:05.51); How Many Stars (2:43.21); End Credits (2:58.34); Closing Credits (2:59.34)   Opening Credits– Epidemic Sound – Copyright . Are satin baseball jackets and bleach-blonde hair really that scary for a gang? And how does this comedy manage to last 105 minutes with almost no jokes? Her multi-facet approach to destroying the myths of aging and bringing to the attention of all that ageism is something we should all be aware of care about ( especially since we all will grow old one day - if we are lucky) Some of the topics we talk about: What her definition of ageism is Why it is important to address the issue of ageism The importance of getting in touch with your authenticity as an older woman What it has been like growing old in Hollywood How women have been "hypnotized" to believe that older women aren't attractive and vital How important it is to celebrate your age and figure out who you are What it is to be an age disrupter The markets that are being missed by NOT telling stories for older people The need to see positive images of older women and why it is important for society in general What an "age anarchist" is and why it is important to be one and much more ... The Lion King's original songs were written by composer Elton John and lyricist Tim Rice, with a score by Hans Zimmer. The film features an ensemble voice cast that includes Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Moira Kelly, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, Robert Guillaume, Madge Sinclair (in her last film role), Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings. The story takes place in a kingdom of lions in Africa and was influenced by the Biblical stories of Joseph and Moses, and William Shakespeare's Hamlet. The Lion King tells the story of Simba (Swahili for lion), a young lion who is to succeed his father, Mufasa, as King of the Pride Lands; however, after Simba's paternal uncle Scar murders Mufasa, Simba is manipulated into thinking he was responsible and flees into exile. For no good reason Jon Favreau remade it Gus Van Psycho style in 2019 with "realistic CGI" and it was horrendous. The Context of White Supremacy hosts the weekly Compensatory Call-In. We encourage non-white listeners to dial in with their codified concepts, new terms, observations, research findings, workplace problems or triumphs, and/or suggestions on how best to Replace White Supremacy With Justice ASAP. We'll use these sessions to hone our use of words as tools to reveal truth, neutralize White people. We'll examine news reports from the past seven days and - hopefully - promote a constructive dialog. #ANTIBLACKNESS The final week of October saw the passing of musical genius Fats Domino and legendary actor Robert Guillaume. Domino, a Louisiana native limited to a fourth grade education because of racism, lived to see 89, sold millions of records, and survived Hurricane Katrina and the 2005 levee failure. Guillaume acted in television and film for decades while challenging restraints on what black entertainers could do. Speaking of prohibition, President Donald Trump verbalized plans to address the White opioid epidemic as a "public health emergency." A Virginia high school was in crisis after video depicted White middle school students simulating the rape of black children while shouting they would "fuck the black out" of them. Sensitivity training is planned. The "medical apartheid" against black people continues as the Los Angeles Times reports the staggering maternal mortality rate for black mothers in the US. There has not been a state of emergency declared or millions invested to safeguard expecting black mothers. #AnswersForMiriamCarey INVEST in The COWS - http://paypal.me/GusTRenegade CALL IN NUMBER: 641.715.3640 CODE 564943# The C.O.W.S. archives: http://tiny.cc/76f6p

Gary Brown is the guest on this week's edition of The Chauncey DeVega Show. Gary is a TV writer, producer, and director who worked on such landmark shows as Benson and 227. Mr. Brown is also a former writer with World Wrestling Entertainment. Chauncey and Gary connected because of the latter's great piece in the L.A. Progressive that detailed how Donald Trump is actually a professional wrestling heel. Given Chauncey's series of essays on politics and professional wrestling, and how Donald Trump is running a reality TV show professional wrestling hustle on the American people, a conversation with Gary was natural and essential. In fun conversation, Gary shares the details about his eclectic career in television, gives advice about pitching shows for TV, talks about Robert Guillaume and the show Benson, and tells some stories about working in professional wrestling and how it helped him to understand Donald Trump. Gary and Chauncey also talk about day-to-day life on a sitcom set, the puzzle that is charisma and talent, the rise of reality TV as a genre, and the future and legacy of Bill Cosby. On this episode of The Chauncey DeVega Show, Chauncey also tells a story about poverty, race, parenting, child abuse, and his local McDonald's "restaurant", muses on the nature of truth vs. opinion, and sings a Madonna song inspired by the Pope's visit to the United States and Chauncey's experience growing up in a black Catholic church before he renounced religion.

"You know about icebergs, Dad?" "Do I? I saw an iceberg once. They were hauling it down to Texas for drinking water. They didn't count on there being an elephant frozen inside. The wooly kind. A mammoth!" The only thing better than a great story is a great storyteller, and Edward Bloom certainly fits the bill. Not a moment goes by in Tim Burton's 2003 film "Big Fish" when young Edward, played by Ewan McGregor, isn't living one of his fantastical stories or old Edward, played by Albert Finney, isn't spinning one of his wild yarns, and that's the hook that pulls us so readily into the film. Join us—Pete Wright and Andy Nelson—this week on Rash Pixel's "Movies We Like" as we dive into this quirky and personal story by Burton, the next in our Richard D. Zanuck series. We talk through things that work for us and things that don't within the film. We discuss screenwriter John August's role in bringing the film to light, latching onto it before Daniel Wallace's original novel that it's based on was even published, as well as what we think of August in general. We talk about Burton and his crazy, auteur style. We discuss the great performances in the film—McGregor and Finney certainly, but also Jessica Lange, Alison Lohman, Robert Guillaume, the late Matthew McGrory, Steve Buscemi... the list goes on and on. We chat about Danny Elfman's music for the film and his connection with Burton. And we also talk about Zanuck and how he came to the film with Burton after they worked on "Planet of the Apes" together. It's a touching film dealing with the relationship between parents and their children, and certainly a movie we like. Listen in!
