In this chat Becky Hartshorn discusses her successful completion of the Pacific Crest Trail. Known as the PCT, it is America's second longest trail, stretching from Mexico to Canada through the states of California, Oregon, and Washington. The route takes in many of America's most scenic and varied terrain—from desserts to mountains to alpine plateaus. The PCT is 2,650 miles long (4,265 kilometres). Starting in Campo, a small town on the United States-Mexico border, it goes through California, Oregon, and Washington before reaching its northern terminus at the United States-Canada border in Manning Park, British Columbia. The trail is divided into 30 sections: 18 sections in California, 7 in Oregon, and 5 in Washington. The average length of each section is 91 miles. Becky Hartshorn is a Junior Clinical Fellow/F5 doctor currently working in Emergency Medicine in Sheffield. Becky is interested in Wilderness and Expedition Medicine, and has completed one of the World Extreme Medicine courses in Slovenia and is working on her Mountain Leader qualification. She's a keen hiker and wants to be able to keep racking up the miles as well as having a career in Emergency Medicine.

On this weeks episode Andy talks with Hiker and Vlogger Becca “Little Skittle” Bergstrom about her hike of the PCT, canceling hikes because of covid, vulnerability, and her YouTube channel. Becca Bergstrom had a single-night's experience of backpacking before she embarked on her solo thru-hike of the 2,650-mile-long Pacific Crest Trail in 2019. In the span of 135 days, she walked from Campo to Manning Park carrying everything she needed to make the long journey, including a newfound sense of happiness, confidence and self-worth. She earned her trail name Little Skittle very early on, powered through the Sierra during one of the highest snow years on record and unfortunately spent the final 1,000 miles processing grief and honoring her grandma, documenting it all and more on cell phone videos she would upload to YouTube. In 2020, Becca had plans, like many of us did. She had hopes of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail in March, and when those plans fell through, she attempted to thru-hike the Continental Divide Trail in July, but called it after only eight miles because Coronavirus cases had recently spiked and it just didn't feel like the right thing to do. She still has her sights set on hiking those two trails, earning her the Triple Crown title, but until then, she's using her voice to share her struggles with eating disorders and bringing awareness to mental health, all while prioritizing the management of her own in the best way she knows how, getting outside and moving through the mountains. Volunteers from the North 350 Blades completed a project this last weekend which will be stepped on and photographed by countless hikers in the years to come. With help from Michael Hanley, who is the Pacific Crest Trail Associations Northern most regional representative, five volunteers helped tear down the old terminus and construct a brand new one.In this podcast you will hear the voices of some Manning Park employees and sounds from the helicopter which flew us to a location near the border and dropped off the wood at Monument 78.PCTA volunteers included Shannon Cunningham, Jeremy Canaria, Loren Schmidt, Roger St John and myself Rudy Giecek. All five of us along with Michael Hanley talked on microphone at the border before, during and after the completion of construction.Michael tells about the history of this project and all of the people who played a part in its fruition. Loren was the volunteer who handled the donated wood from Oregon Canadian Forest Products and so he tells about the process.E.C. Manning Park/BC Parks really helped out with completing this project. They paid for the helicopter, flying PCTA and the new terminus to the border. Thanks to the fine crew up there!Episode photo is of me, the first person to sit on the new Northern Terminus! Jeremy "Spider" Canaria took the photo.
