The Mindful Healers Podcast with Dr. Jessie Mahoney and Dr. Ni-Cheng Liang

In this reflective solocast, Dr. Ni-Cheng invites you to join her on a journey into the lives of two very special Bald Eagles—Jackie and Shadow—and their eaglets, high above Big Bear Lake, California.  She shares both the magic of nature and powerful life lessons that resonate far beyond the treetops. This episode is for anyone who: Loves wildlife or is fascinated by eagles Enjoys learning from real stories in nature Wants to reconnect with their authentic self Could use a gentle, heartfelt reminder to slow down and pay attention You'll hear: Fascinating backstory about the Bald Eagle's conservation comeback The unique behavior of Jackie, a rare eagle who stayed close to home Observations from this year's nesting season, including the joys and heartbreaks of raising eaglets in the wild The whimsical antics of nocturnal visitors, Fiona and Fast Freddie (San Bernardino Flying Squirrels) Life lessons inspired by the patience, strength, and partnership of these majestic birds Pearls of Wisdom Nature has much to teach—if we pause and pay attention. Special Episode Blue Zone Travel   https://www.bluezones.com/exploration/#section-1   The five "Blue Zones" in the world, which are regions identified as having a high concentration of people living to a very old age, are:    Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica; and Loma Linda, California, USA. Notably, four of these Blue Zones are located near oceans, making them easily accessible by sea travel.    Ocean proximity: Blue Zones like Costa Rica and California are situated not too far from coastlines, making them ideal destinations for those interested in combining a healthy lifestyle exploration with beach vacations.  Mediterranean Sea: The regions of Sardinia (Italy) and Ikaria (Greece) are located in the Mediterranean Sea, which can be easily accessed by cruise ships or ferries.  Cultural immersion: Visiting a Blue Zone allows travelers to experience the local culture, cuisine, and lifestyle, which are often linked to longevity.    My friend Kirsty mentioned this in January, so I've created a list of things to do for each. You are not guaranteed to have long life, or even a good time, but visiting one or more of the zones will require different types of travel. 1. Ikaria, Greece

Send us a textWhen April Lawyer opened Vanilla in Bend's Old Mill District back in 2005, she was still racing professionally as a downhill mountain biker. Today, as her boutique celebrates nearly 20 years in business, her remarkable journey from action sports athlete to successful entrepreneur reveals how our past experiences shape unexpected futures.Growing up in Big Bear Lake, California, April's early entrepreneurial spirit emerged through a childhood lemonade stand that evolved into selling treats from her bedroom window. Her introduction to snowboarding came through free ski days at the local mountain, sparking a passion that would lead to professional career. Meeting legendary snowboarder Janna Meyen became a pivotal moment, offering April both friendship and mentorship. The 1997 Winter X Games in her hometown of Big Bear was a defining moment for April, as she became the only female athlete to compete in both snowboarding and mountain biking. April's talent, work ethic and the media spotlight opened doors that took her across the globe, riding on both snow and dirt. However, a serious crash at the 1999 X Games in Crested Butte led to a head injury, gradually shifting her focus toward mountain biking.During her eleven years racing professionally, April developed valuable relationships with brands and gained experience in product development. After witnessing a friend's serious accident, she began contemplating her future beyond racing. Working at a friend's boutique had given her a taste of retail, and the seed of an idea began to form. With remarkable determination, April secured a space in Bend's Old Mill District before she even had a business name. Opening Vanilla while still racing professionally, she initially kept her athletic background separate, wanting the store to stand on its own merits. Today, the boutique has become a beloved Bend institution known for both its carefully curated merchandise and the genuine community April has fostered.Through April's story, we see how the skills developed in one arena—determination, authenticity, community-building, and resilience—can translate into success in entirely different ventures. Her journey reminds us that sometimes our most meaningful chapters come after following unexpected paths. The Circling Podcast is proud to be in partnership with Bend Magazine. Head to any Woodward Mountain Center and you'll immediately be drawn to the kids in the Jib Park and Peace Park pushing themselves to new heights. Since Woodward's humble beginning over 50 years ago as a gymnastics camp in Pennsylvania, progression has been central to its mission. Today, Woodward centers span the globe including Utah's Woodward Park City. In this episode of Last Chair, we catch up with a legend in action sports, Chris “Gunny” Gunnarson. Now the president of Woodward globally, Gunny's three decades in action sports has paralleled the dramatic growth from surf to skateboard to snowboard to ski.Beginning at Snow Summit and Big Bear in southern California, Gunnarson quickly became a leader in the sport from building snow terrain for the X-Games beginning in year one, to crafting private training venues that sent athletes like Shaun White on to olympic gold. Along the way, he built a reputation as a leader in progression with his company Snow Park Technologies and a capable partner with resorts, ultimately helping the world's greatest athletes achieve pinnacles of success in their career. And while his career has been marked by relationships with the greatest athletes, Gunnarson is quick to point out that what's central to his own mission is to bring that experience to enthusiasts of all ages and ability levels. Today, he leads Woodward on a global journey to provide fun and progression for all.As a boy growing up in SoCal in the ‘60s and ‘70s, he was immersed in the cultural revolution of action sports. His life was centered around skateboarding and a little surfing. But when he discovered snowboarding at 13, he used every angle to get up to the mountains and ride on snow. Here's teaser of Gunny's Last Chair interview, which takes you back into the origin years of the culture of snowboarding and tracks you through the impact Woodward is making with people of all ages.Let's go back to the beginning – YOUR beginning!Oh man, how I got involved in sport. I mean, I think I was around five when I got on a surfboard. I know I was seven when I got on a skateboard and I had a bike like every other kid in the neighborhood. And I heard about snowboarding when I was 13. In fact, for my 13th birthday, my dad took us up. I lived in San Diego, so I grew up in the southern California hotbed of board sports. And it was funny. My mom and dad were like, oh, snowboarding? You know, we used to ski before you were born and I didn't even know what skiing was, really. And so we get up to the local mountain and they were like, ‘no snowboarding allowed.' We had rented some boards from the local surf shop. I rented a Chuck Barfoot board and they were like, ‘no snowboards allowed.' My dad got so angry and he's like, ‘I used to ski here all the time. What do you mean no snowboards allowed?' And so we ended up just … we had rented a cabin with a couple of my buddies for my 13th birthday to go snowboarding, trying to figure it out, you know, falling a lot just on this back hill. And I knew right then and there, like, I have got to figure out a way to do this for the rest of my life. And somehow I lucked out.So you must have had some good skateboarding roots in SoCal?Well, it was kind of all I knew. And, you know, sort of in my high school teen years, I was living up in the outskirts of LA, so I was skating swimming pools. There was a big earthquake in Northridge, and there were lots of empty swimming pools. We had maps of pools from condemned buildings and houses. And so we'd show up with buckets, mops, and we would skate all these different pools. I think we skated Tom Petty's pool at one point. It was like a condemned house that he'd owned or something like that. But that was my whole life and culture was skating and a little bit of surfing, but mostly skateboarding and trying to find as many pathways to get up to the mountains as possible. Were your business wheels turning yet in your mind?Honestly, not even a little bit. At that point, it was just living life, having fun and trying to skate as much as possible. What was your first job in the industry?I've had a lot of jobs in my lifetime, but my first job in the industry was at Snow Summit in Big Bear Lake. I was fresh out of high school, and I was going to try and make it as a pro snowboarder, get whatever job I could on the mountain, and, funny enough, I got a job with the patrol at Snow Summit at the time. Being based right in Southern California obviously was right in the middle of what I'll call boardsport Mecca, except they weren't quite there yet. And so I get this job as a snowboarder, but on patrol, thinking, ‘oh, I'm just going to, you know, snowboard a lot.' But I actually ended up really loving patrol and really loving resort operations – becoming a sponge and learning everything I could. They were a very progressive thinking resort ski resort, and they were just starting to launch terrain parks, and none of the other patrol guys wanted to deal with the terrain parks. Was there a turning point for you when you saw your career as a terrain park developer come to light?Over time, that was a real paradigm shift. The terrain park movement, which really was born out of Big Bear, also was a paradigm shift in the entire world of winter sports in the sense that right there in Southern California, it was meeting a market need. But as it became a broader national interest of how do we deal with these rowdy snowboarders and contain them? And now there's freestyle skiers that want to do the same kind of stuff – like we should just give them their own venue to do that kind of stuff and keep them in a little contained area so they don't screw with the rest of the mountain operations. But who knows how to do this kind of stuff? And that is actually when I saw a business opportunity.Gunny, what was it that motivated you to bring your lifelong action sports skills and knowledge to Woodward, now serving as global president?I've known of Woodward virtually my entire career – I mean, you can't be in this in the action sports universe without knowing what Woodward is. You know, it's got a 53-year legacy. I was super intrigued when I learned that Powdr, a ski resort company, had bought Woodward because, you know, everybody knew Woodward as a camp out in Pennsylvania. And it was the Holy Land. Like, if you were going to be a competing skateboarder, BMX athlete, that's where you went. And so when Powdr bought Woodward, I was certainly paying attention from afar. But to answer your question – there I was, life was good, I owned my own company, I had my own TV show. And the folks at Powdr came and said, ‘hey, we want to talk to you about you coming in and helping us figure out how to best propel Woodward from where it currently is.' And I left it all. I moved to Park City, Utah from Truckee.Talk about progression and why it's important to Woodward?Humans want to fly. They want to move. They want to move their bodies. They want to challenge themselves. All the way from the youngest ages – you can hear the kid right behind me. He's jumping on the trampoline. He's figuring out how to move his body in the air, whether he's doing a backflip or just monkeying around. We have zone coaches. We have an entire array of different types of programming, from casual, easy, fun all the way to very focused clinics and training so that people can get better. It's human nature to want to get better, whether you're a golfer or a swimmer or whatever your thing is. And our thing is action sports. And this is where you can do it. And we've got the right people and the right tools and environments to do it.What does it mean to you to be involved with a program like this that just means so much for kids?It means so much because we were all kids at one point and some of us are still kids at heart. I'm looking at you, Tom. I consider you one. I'd like to believe I'm one. And to go back to that sort of joy that you had as a kid when, you know, life was sort of carefree and innocent. We all want that, right? And so here at Woodward, yes, there's a huge focus on kids, but there's also a big focus on kids and families – you know, just sort of what it's like growing up in today's era. I'm glad we can be a bright spot in that way. It's nice to have a spot where you're feeling a part of something, you're learning skills and you're doing something besides sitting on your couch, looking at your phone or looking at the TV. And so as a parent, that means a lot to me for my kids, but also in my role with Woodward means a lot to know that we're the kind of place that can really help shape lives. I have so many parents come to me and tell me how Woodward literally changed their kids' lives. Just last week someone told me that Woodward literally changed the way his daughter approached college, how she got into college, how she's developed a career path, and that she's gunning for my job someday, which I'm like, ‘bring it on.' Listen to the interview to learn more about one of action sports' most interesting and influential figures. Like how many times he's been backstage for Nirvana, what he loves to drive in the Utah desert sand and the skateboarding heroes who helped forge his childhood in Southern California. He shares his personal background with stars like Shaun White, Danny Davis and Jamie Anderson. And he is emotional about the death of his friend and action sports legend Ken Block earlier this year. This hour with Gunny truly captures the spirit and culture of action sports and the passion his Woodward team has to bring it to guests of all ages. Let's dig in to this episode of Last Chair.

Investigation into a little-known pollution rule that keeps the air dirty for millions of Americans. What roadkill can tell us about California's deer and mountain lion populations. Where to see fall colors across the Sierra Nevada.   Loophole Lets Air Regulators Wipe Pollution From Records The Clean Air Act is a more than 50-year-old federal law that allows the EPA to set standards to protect public health by regulating emissions of hazardous air pollutants. But an investigation by the California Newsroom found that a little-known provision forgives pollution caused by “natural” or “uncontrollable” events – like wildfires. And this “exceptional events rule” is being used more and more by local air regulators, alongside extreme weather events associated with climate change. Which means the air on paper might be cleaner than it actually is. And that has significant consequences to public health. Molly Peterson is an investigative reporter at the California Newsroom, a collaboration of public radio stations around the state and CalMatters, and joins Insight with more behind the findings, as well as solutions.  What Roadkill Can Tell Us About Native Species Roadkill. It's an unfortunate sight on roads. But these fallen wild animals do have a great deal to tell us. CapRadio Environment Reporter Manola Secaira spoke to researchers at UC Davis about what they have learned from roadkill, why certain areas are more susceptible, as well as what the state of California is doing to better track and conserve native species.  Fall Colors Across Sierra Nevada With Fall in full swing, it's time for nature lovers to go out and enjoy the changing colors of the leaves. From Lake Tahoe and Big Bear Lake, to Yosemite National Park, there are many places throughout California to take in the autumn beauty. Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia.   Today is Thursday, Aug. 10  Big Bear Lake is the mountain biker's best-kept secret…See the stars at Watoga--West Virginia's own Dark Sky park…and learn helpful tips for your exporting business--#YesWV…on today's daily304. #1 – From BIKE MAG – Thirty miles east of Morgantown, Big Bear Lake is situated on roughly 5,000 acres of deeded RV camp lands consisting of small villages and unincorporated communities intertwined with some 50 miles of world class singletrack. The trails originated from a 1980's motorcycle race series that ran through the area called the Blackwater 100. From those roots, Mark Schooley began to develop more mountain bike specific trails in the mid 90's. The property now hosts a bike festival and other races throughout the year. With a 20 mph speed limit on community roads, residents ride exclusively on golf carts, described as “a quirky, slightly odd, and largely endearing trait of Big Bear Lake.” Watch the video to learn more!   Learn more: https://www.bikemag.com/news/big-bear-mtb-haven   #2 – From WIDE OPEN SPACE –  Gazing up at starry night skies hoping for a shooting star sighting may just be the perfect way to spend a summer evening. Why not plan a Dark Sky Road Trip this summer? DarkSky (formerly the International Dark-Sky Association) has certified more than 200 locations around the world as official Dark Sky Places. These include American parks, reserves, and even some Urban Night Sky Places where you can gaze at the night skies near large cities, traditionally places where light pollution can make stargazing more difficult. In 2021, West Virginia's Watoga State Park received an International Dark Sky Park designation. It is managed for dark skies along with two other state-owned properties in the area, including Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park and Calvin Price State Forest. Monongahela National Forest is also nearby, providing an additional area with darkness. For assistance in planning your Dark Skies adventure in Almost Heaven, visit www.wvtourism.com/stars. Selling your products in the EU comes with some challenges that require some additional work and planning, but the effort can lead to lucrative results — the EU is the third largest economy in the world. This month, we'll look at the European Conformity marking, also known as a CE marking. This mandatory regulatory marking for certain products signals that your business is committed to delivering safe and reliable products that meet essential safety, health and environmental requirements defined by EU regulations. Compliance with CE marking standards is not only essential for your product to have successful market access but necessary to build consumer trust in the EU. Think of it as a key to getting your product into the European market.  Learn more: https://westvirginia.gov/ce-marking-what-is-it-and-does-my-business-need-one/ Find these stories and more at wv.gov/daily304. On Episode 214 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast, we catch up with 2021 American Royal World Series of BBQ Invitational Grand Champion Bill Heyen, whose Triple H BBQ picked up their second Grand Championship of 2023 last weekend in Covington, Tenn. Heyan and wife Andrea, part of a large farm family in west-central Illinois, have 12 GCs and seven RGCs since 2019. They're offering their knowledge in a unique “hands-on, behind the scenes” style with 1-on-1 classes in real time during competitions. Bill, who's also one of the nicer people we've met in BBQ, explains how it works and even how much it costs to take this unique class, as opposed to the typical 20-30 folks in a classroom tell-all. We also take a trip to southern California to find out more about 5th Gear BBQ with head cook Nick Barrick after the family team won its first career KCBS Grand Championship recently in Big Bear Lake, California, in their first competition of 2023. Nick, a self-taught cook, talks about why he was bitten by the competition bug a few years ago and lays out some goals in both competition and catering for 5th Gear the rest of 2023.  Meanwhile, it's the first “Game Week” of the year for the Tailgate Guys BBQ cooking team and Lyndal has a preview of the hometown Ozarks BBQ Fest while Steve keeps his focus on the backyard with an array of ideas for grill time on his deck this weekend. Season 3 episode 6 is one of the most cringy episodes in Sister Wives history. Meri drags the wives to Any Time Fitness to workout with her trainer Bill. But before they start the workout they all have to get on the scale and have Bill announce their weight to America. Then the Browns meet Danielle, an Episcopal priest who teaches religion and theology. She is interested in the Brown's religon and wants to observe them in their element. In episode 7 the family goes camping at Big Bear Lake for the 4th of July weekend, but first Ysabel and Brianna "move in" with Meri because Ysabel and Christine aren't getting along. The camping trip was pretty miserable and the teens were very miserable. But we were treated to another iconic scene when Kody was afraid to drive his "sports car" as he calls it through a big puddle.

In 2013, southern California residents were scared. The Los Angeles PD was scouring the region for a suspect who was targeting members of law enforcement and their families. It took the largest manhunt in southern California's history to bring an end to his reign of terror.

BURNED: A California Newsroom investigation

Wildfires in California have grown increasingly extreme and devastating in the last decade. BURNED, a yearlong investigation from the California Newsroom, reveals how the U.S. Forest Service is struggling to complete the work it knows it must do to keep Californians safe from wildfires. For decades, the agency has developed projects to thin and manage overgrown forests in an effort to reduce wildfire intensity. But those plans routinely stall out, and sometimes are abandoned completely. The 2021 Caldor Fire destroyed most of Grizzly Flats, a foothills community in Northern California that borders Forest Service land. CapRadio's Scott Rodd investigated how the Forest Service took years to develop a large forest management project around Grizzly Flats, and only finished a small portion by the time the Caldor Fire ignited in 2021. The agency originally committed to finishing the 15,000-acre project by 2020. Towns up and down California fear they could be next. KCRW's Caleigh Wells uncovered how the Forest Service tackles only a fraction of the prescribed burning work it needs to get done to protect communities in Southern California. The agency delayed or canceled multiple projects around Big Bear Lake, a popular tourist town surrounded by the San Bernardino National Forest. The town narrowly avoided disaster this year when the Radford Fire ignited. CapRadio's Scott Rodd and KCRW's Caleigh Wells reported this special investigation. Additional reporting by George LeVines and Emily Zentner. It was edited by Adriene Hill and Mike Kessler of the California Newsroom, a collaboration of the state's public radio stations.

Of the 8 bills Newsom signed, one targets the sale of gun parts made from 3D printers, another prevents those convicted of child abuse or elder abuse from having a gun for 10 years … a third requires schools to report student threats or perceived threats of violence. Politics Editor Scott Shafer, KQED Radio This week's protests by truckers at the Port of Oakland follows a U-S Supreme Court decision that rejected an industry bid to exclude truckers... who often own their own vehicles.  Truckers are demanding either a repeal of AB5, or clarification as to how it will be enforced.  Governor Gavin Newsom says truckers should work to implement the transition to AB5. Mexican-American lowrider cruising enthusiasts are working to roll back a decades old cruising ban. If you're of a certain age, you might remember the 1973 George Lucas film “American Graffiti” which celebrated California car cruising culture. Cryptocurrency donations have been allowed at the federal level since 2014. We've spent the majority of our time in the past few months in Big Bear Lake, a mountain village a few hours outside of Los Angeles.  The beauty is in nature -- the snow capped mountains, the majestic trees, and of course the stunning lake.  The town itself is charming, but as you can imagine there are no tall buildings and just a small selection of restaurants and shops in the charming village.  That's probably why it came as a complete shock to our system when we decided to visit Las Vegas this past weekend.  Turns out, it is only a 3 hour drive from Big Bear Lake.  So we decided to go on an adventure.   Eva and Sophia were simply amazed that in this barren desert, Big Dreamers had built a pyramid, New York, Paris, Venice, and of course if you've been to Vegas you know the list goes on and on.  In this episode, Eva shares some highlights from the trip, and how it inspired her more than ever to Dream Big.  I must say it was surreal to take our kids to see one of the great illusionists of our time, David Copperfield, who Olga and I remember from our own childhood.   Enjoy the episode!   For our show notes, visit DreamBigPodcast.com/298
