For April's guest-less episode, I'm looking back on the wild ride that was this month, and trying to make sense of this period of contemplation in my life. I share a few realizations I've had about: uncertainty (involving Phil Stutz's “evil wedding cake” theory); betrayal (involving a special tarot reading with Mark Horn); whether or not I have faith that the universe will support me (involving a group workshop on what women want); and what we're meant to be doing here (involving a gondola ride with Chelsea Handler). I also answer a couple of listener questions about how I manage my time, and my research and creative processes. For the show notes, head over to my Substack.== Learn more about your ad choices. “One of the things that we do on Yom Kippur is we read the story of Jonah, the prophet who ran away saying, no, no, I don't want to do this job, find somebody else to do it. And I connect this to the card, the king of cups, because in the distance behind the king, you can see the seas are in the middle of a storm and there's a storm tossed ship. And there's also a great fish that has come out of the sea which reminds me of the whale that swallows Jonah, or as they say in the Bible, a great fish, and then you see the king who is on a platform in the middle of this roiling sea, and he is like a surfer. He is not being tossed and turned. He knows how to ride the wave. And I talk about the way in which we run from our destiny or what we think is our destiny, what we're afraid of in the future. We see storms coming and we try and run from them when really what we need is the knowledge to surf them and how to learn how to use the energy of the challenges in our lives to move us forward rather than to crash us into the sand.” This is the third part in our special series on Mystical Systems—last Monday, we heard from Asterian astrologist Jade Luna, and the Monday before we heard from Courtney Smith on the Enneagram. Next week, we'll learn about Human Design. That voice you just heard is Mark Horn, who jokes that he might be the only person who has taught at both the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Readers Studio International Tarot Conference. Yep, that's right: Mark Horn is an Kabbalah academic who also reads Tarot—though the most remarkable point about this combination is that the two actually go together, and are indelibly linked throughout time. In Tarot readings with Mark—full disclosure, I've had two—you settle on a specific question, and he does your hand through the Sephirot, which is the Kabbalistic symbol for the Tree of Life. These readings are fascinating, not only for their ability to respond to the question, but also because Mark decodes the cards through stories from the Kabbalah, making it an entirely different, wholly mystical experience. Okay, lets get to our conversation. Whether you are Jewish, or not Jewish, I hope you will find this mindful conversation fascinating and helpful.Mark Horn is the author of Tarot & The Gates of Light: A Kabbalistic Path to Liberation. He may be the only person who has taught at both the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Readers Studio International Tarot Conference. Myth and sacred story have always been central to his spiritual path, and he uses both as a performing storyteller and a tarot guide. He applies his understanding of the archetypes in sacred stories from all traditions to the individual spiritual path of clients as they are revealed in readings. I had a reading with Mark and it is changing my life...A few takeaways from this MindFULL conversation:1. There is a Power greater than Us and anything we can do to cleanse our energy centers that can help us see, express and experience these energies, can be helpful.2. The Tree of Life is a "map" that has 10 inner energies represented, and if you overlay it on the the Chakra system, they align and give you a way of examing how they manifest in you. We ALL have blocks and this practice is a way to purify with specific meditations. 3. Counting The Omer is a journey over a 49 day period (also learn why 49 days and what 49 days these are) and helps people clear spiritual and creative blocks inside so they can be free and more connected. Mark Horn is the author of “Tarot and the Gates of Light: A Kabbalistic Path to Liberation.” This innovative, spiritual workbook has won praise from two groups that don't usually come together—rabbis and tarot experts. Mark has been a life-long activist in the post-Stonewall LGBTQ movement, starting in 1970 as a member of both the Gay Liberation Front and the Gay Activist Alliance; as well as serving as chair of Gay & Lesbian Youth of New York. Over the years his activism and community service has included working as a peer counselor at the LGBTQ counseling center, Identity House; and serving on the board of directors of NewFest, New York City's premier LGBTQ film festival. He is the editor/writer of the Stonewall Seder liturgy, a ritual dinner celebrating Jewish LGBTQ Pride, which has been used and adapted by congregations around the United States, Europe and Australia. Mark is probably the only person who has taught at the Readers Studio International Tarot Conference, the Jewish Theological Seminary and the Identity House Gay Men's Conference. He lives on the Upper West Side in New York City where he is available for private instruction and consultation. Episode Highlights We discuss Mark's book, Tarot and the Gates of Light: A Kabbalistic Path to Liberation. Mark shares about his spiritual journey from his days studying Buddhism in Japan to his work today teaching and doing tarot readings. He talks about his ways of working with his mysticism traditions as a path of queer liberation and wholeness. We learn about his creation of the Stonewall Seder and how it has grown and evolved over three decades. We explore the heroic journey archetype and how that applies to the queer community. Today’s episode is a bit of a trip back to some years ago. In 2019, whilst covering the 50th anniversary of the events that happened in the bar Stonewall Inn in NYC, which unfolded and promulgated the fight and deep germination of the queer community, I met Mark Horn. One of the members of the group Gay Liberation Front (GLF), Mark is among the creators of the first-ever Pride Parade, back in 1970. Very fortunate of me to find back in my old cellphone, the very audio of our interview, which I’m more than happy to share with all of you. In our talk, we addressed Mark’s youth discovering his sexuality back in the day, a thorough description of the queer scene of the not-so-fabulous and rebellious NYC, dancing as a political act, his relation with Marsha P.Johnson and Sylvia Rivera two huge figures of the queer community to this day, and his reflections on our fight for the protection of our rights. As a member of the queer community, Mark’s words have been in my heart since the day we met 2 years ago. I hope you enjoy today’s episode as much as I’ve since finding this endearing audio file.

Who wouldn’t love to know the winning lottery numbers, after all? But what if there is something, something deeper, in uncovering our personal journey into the future? Let’s take a closer look at how Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and the ancient Kabbala have an underlying connection in this interview with author Mark Horn. Host Desireé Duffy discusses the significance of the Tarot and a practice known as “counting the Omer”. Can we pull from mystical practices associated with the Tarot and Kabbala in an effort to find revelations and personal insights or growth? Is it okay to uncover our destiny? How can we actually do this? Mark Horn’s book is called Tarot and the Gates of Life.
