Courtney Smith, executive coach and co-author of Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness, joins us this week and we are so excited to talk to her about what it looks like to loosen our grip on being “good,” and instead allow for wholeness. This conversation also opens up a deeper framework through the Enneagram and the original roots of the “seven deadly sins” not as moral failings, but as patterns that once helped us feel safe, alive, or connected… and eventually became limiting. What we cover in this episode:
Courtney Smith is an enneagram coach, author, and consultant who works with individuals as well as Fortune 500 companies. After receiving a degree in mathematical economics, she graduated from Yale Law School with her JD and intended to start her career in law. She then decided to change course to consulting, where she worked at McKinsey & Company before transitioning to Condé Nast, briefly working for a real estate start-up, and even considering a career as a doctor. She soon joined the board of Planned Parenthood and received her masters in public health, but was forced to pivot due to the start of the pandemic. After this career shift, Smith, who had used the Enneagram personality system herself, began using the tool to help others. This led to where she is today: coaching and consulting high-profile clients such as Brené Brown and co-authoring the book Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness: A Process for Reclaiming Your Full Self.
GLP-1 medications are everywhere right now, but the conversation around them often lacks nuance and is rarely discussed through the lens of active people. That's exactly why I'm doing a 3-part podcast series all about GLP-1 medications, with athletes in mind.In this series, you'll hear from three dietitians who regularly work with GLP-1 agonists and each bring a unique clinical and personal perspective to the conversation.I'm kicking things off in episode 135 with Courtney Smith, MS, RD, CDCES, a sports dietitian, diabetes specialist, and longtime endurance athlete.Together, we break down the basics of GLP-1 medications and what active people need to know in the context of training and health.Courtney and I discuss:The history of GLP-1 medications, especially in diabetic populationsWhy they have exploded in popularity in recent yearsHow the various drugs on the market differ, plus dosing practicesThe benefits and side effects she's observed in practiceHow crucial it is to get ongoing professional support when on GLP-1's, and why you still need to work on diet & lifestyle changesWhy she generally does not recommend GLP-1 drugs for most athletesIf you've been hearing about GLP-1 medications and wondering how they may affect your training, fueling, recovery, blood sugar, or overall health as an active person, this episode will answer your questions while laying an important foundation for the rest of the series to come.
You may be familiar with this woman: she wakes up before anyone else, eats standing up, clears the dishes first—and if you told her she was good, she'd believe you, because all of that not resting, not asking, not taking up room, is what goodness looks like—doesn't it? Kelly digs into research showing that the behavior we reward in women—being accommodating, putting others first, never stopping—is actually a clinical risk factor for depression. This episode takes a close look at why many of us are so busy being good that we forget to be whole and the quiet cost of following rules we never actually agreed to. Kelly sits down with Enneagram coach Courtney Smith, co-author (with Elise Loehnen) of the workbook Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness, to explore the cultural scripts women inherit about how we're supposed to be—and what happens when we start questioning them. They talk about why taking responsibility feels both terrifying and liberating, the difference between being stuck and choosing agency, and how fear keeps us playing roles that don't serve us. It's about the courage it takes to face what you've been avoiding, the surprising freedom that comes from talking back to yourself, and why wholeness might be worth risking everything you thought kept you safe. How Enneagrams can help YOU! This week, JVN dives into the world of the Enneagram with coach and expert, Courtney Smith. This is the personality system that doesn't just describe your behavior… it describes your motivation. JVN learns their type and discovers why two people who look NOTHING alike (hi history!) can actually operate from the exact same psychological blueprint. We're talking: What the Enneagram actually is (and what it definitely is not). The 9 types and their core fears + desires. Instincts — the part that explains your relationships, stress, and habits. Why people-pleasing and codependence show up. How mistyping happens (and why most of us do it). And yes… JVN's official type reveal. BIO: Courtney Smith combines her experience as a management consultant with her expertise in a variety of tools and practices (including the Enneagram) to offer coaching and consulting services tailored to the individuals and organizations she works with. She is committed to helping all of us see how we unwittingly limit our lives and how to unlock more present, intentional, and richer ways of being in this world. The best way to access her tools now is by joining her new newsletter. Courtney works with a variety of clients one-on-one to identify places in their lives where they feel stuck and would benefit from an outside perspective. Using the Enneagram, somatic practices, and other pragmatic tools, Courtney helps her clients break through their patterns and limiting beliefs, and more fully experience aliveness, connection, integrity, appreciation, effectiveness, authenticity, clarity, support, and freedom. In this episode of the Creator Method Podcast, Gary sits down with Courtney Smith, a top-producing Toronto real estate agent and early Creator Method member, to unpack how consistent content creation turned cold leads into real business, including a $10M listing that came directly through Instagram DMs. Known for building a trusted personal brand alongside her real estate business, Courtney shares how confidence, clarity, and long-term commitment transformed both her content and career. Together, they break down why content works differently for service-based businesses, how personal brand builds trust before a single conversation happens, and why most people quit long before content has a chance to compound. Courtney opens up about facing criticism and pushback for showing up online, how she stayed consistent anyway, and what shifted when she stopped chasing virality and focused on connection instead. They explore the realities of content creation in real estate, turning visibility into leverage, and how showing up imperfectly can outperform polished strategies that lack personality. Gary challenges Courtney with real-time feedback on format, discipline, and distribution, revealing why clarity and repetition matter more than hacks, trends, or aesthetics. This conversation is a grounded, practical look at how content compounds over time, how trust converts into opportunity, and why playing the long game is the real advantage. If you are a creator, entrepreneur, or service professional looking to turn attention into action and build a brand that actually drives results, this episode will change how you think about consistency, confidence, and growth. “How do I know they're actually learning? And what happens when they hit the 'real world'?”Most of us grew up in traditional systems, navigating our days through the lens of grades and standardized tests. When parents choose a Montessori path, they often hold questions to themselves about the pedagogy, the outcomes, and much more. Because we understand the stakes of this investment, we've stepped aside to facilitate a direct conversation between parents. In this special episode, veteran parents Courtney Smith and Jeannette Schar—who both began this journey as traditional school kids themselves—take over the microphones. Joined by fellow parent Lee Burgess, they answer anonymous questions from our community with the perspective that only comes after 14 years on the path.Episode highlights:The Transition to High School: How students who grew up without letter grades adapt and lead in traditional academic settings.New Indicators of Growth: How to recognize the building of "Montessori muscles" like agency, accountability, and self-possession.Navigating the "Marin Bubble": An honest talk on diversity, social dynamics, and preparing kids for the world beyond our gates. The 2:00 A.M. Doubt: Practical wisdom for staying grounded when your child's educational experience looks nothing like your own.Listen in for an honest window into the life of our school and the lasting impact of the Montessori path.

Dr. Dan interviews coach, Enneagram teacher, and author Courtney Smith to explore how we grow, evolve, and reclaim our most authentic selves. Courtney shares the transformational journey that took her from a high-achieving, analytical career to helping leaders and individuals uncover the stories, fears, and inner patterns that shape their lives. Drawing from Courtney's work with the Enneagram, Conscious Leadership tools, and her new workbook Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness: A Process for Reclaiming Your Full Self By Elise Loehnen and Courtney Smith, this episode breaks down how old stories and inherited beliefs keep us stuck — and how understanding fear, rewriting narratives, and naming our “parts” can create profound personal growth. According to Courtney Smith, fear can send us “below the line” in relationships. When you act from fear, you end up scrambling for security, control, and safety–often at the expense of wholeness. In this conversation, Dr. Diana Hill and Courtney Smith, author of Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness, explore ways to shift into more authentic relating. They explore how to stay grounded while connecting, how to notice when we are caught in a story, and how to become growth-oriented co-creators. Along the way, Diana and Courtney demo some of these skills in their relationship, in real time. This is a fun one, especially if you are craving deeper relationships–ones that meet you at the soul level. “What does it mean to make change in my life—not from a place that there was something wrong with me?” asks my coauthor Courtney Smith. “But I made choices that have gotten me here. I respect and value those choices. I understand I wouldn’t be here without them. And I'm also choosing to do something a little bit different going forward.” Courtney is a coach, group facilitator, and Enneagram expert. Today, we’re taking you through the seven tools that form the core process of our new workbook Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness: A Process for Reclaiming Your Full Self. In this profoundly insightful episode, Dr. Dan welcomes back New York Times bestselling author and cultural thought leader Elise Loehnen to explore the power and necessity of shadow work. Together, they dive into Jungian psychology, the cost of cultural conditioning, and the stories we unconsciously carry that shape who we believe we must be. Elise talks to Dr. Dan about the journey that led to her latest project, Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness—a transformational guidebook co-written with coach Courtney Smith. From the drama triangle to internal family systems to working with the “eight sins,” this conversation is packed with tools and reflections to help you move from ego to soul, knowledge to wisdom, and fear to empowerment. Key Topics on this new episode include: what lives in our shadow—and why it matters; the cultural cost of being “good” vs. becoming whole; using anger, fear, and envy as tools for healing and growth; and the shadow's role in leadership, parenting, and cultural change. There are many factors that influence whether Mexican immigrants to the United States are able to achieve upward mobility. In his new book, “Dreams Achieved and Denied: Mexican Intergenerational Mobility,” Robert Courtney Smith shares research conducted over twenty years and involving nearly one hundred children of Mexican immigrants in New York City. He examines how being documented or not acts as a master status, and how that is expressed through choices about education, employment, social networks, expressions of masculinity, and romantic and familial relationships. Robert Courtney Smith is a Professor of Sociology, Immigration Studies and Public Affairs at the School of Public Affairs and in the Sociology Department at the Graduate Center at CUNY.

For December's solo episode, I looked at the etymology of the word resolutions. What I found might surprise you. And instead of thinking about what I want to be or do next year, it got me thinking about what I want to let go of. And how I can recognize when I'm making things more complicated than they need to be (I love complexity and depth but can sometimes get carried away). I also get into a few other things that are on my mind right now, including: journal speaking, how we sometimes conflate altruism with transaction, the MAHA movement, and ways I can be softer on people while being harder on systems. Last, some news about two of my most fulfilling collaborations, which are both coming out in workbook form in 2025: True and False Magic (with Phil Stutz) and Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness (with Courtney Smith). Coach Courtney Smith joins us in this moment, when collective anxiety is running high, to share a perspective and tools that many of us could use right now. She explains why we understandably get seduced by fear and stuck operating below the line, from a place of threat. And how we can recognize when we're ready to move above the line—and what awaits us there. She also shares some ways to escape the drama triangle, be okay with the unknown, and find power in your story—whether it's one you're fully committed to, or one you're willing to expand. “From my perspective, one of the reasons we tell stories is it helps give us a sense of who we are, we use stories to affirm our identity. And that's part of the reason why we don't actually like to call them stories, because if we call them stories, and we begin to see that the self is actually rooted in construction, made up interpreted reality, it can be very threatening to us and to our sense of who would I be without this story. And so that's one of the things that I really love about this is you can begin to see that my sense of self has to change, if I'm willing to look at my stories, what is going to happen is my sense of who I am is going to change.” So says Courtney Smith, a coach, facilitator, and dear friend who is schooled and trained in many different modalities: Conscious Leadership Group, Byron Katie's work, the Alexander Technique, and the Enneagram. She is one of my favorite thought partners because of the range of her intelligence and the structure of her mind: She was a math econ major who happens to have a J.D. from Yale and a masters in public health from NYU. Before taking a turn toward the mystical, she was a McKinsey consultant. So in short, she's a multi-hyphenate Renaissance woman whose bookshelf looks much like mine. You might remember Courtney from our conversation on Pulling the Thread about the Enneagram—if you missed it, there's a link in the show notes—but today, we're going to talk about Stephen Karpman's Drama Triangle: What it is, how to know when you're in it, and how to move past it…while recognizing that you'll be in another one soon enough. We also do a little bit of live coaching and role-playing, so you all will really get a sense of how this powerful tool works. Meanwhile, if you want to work with me and Courtney, together, we're hosting a workshop from May 17-19 at the Art of Living Retreat Center in Boone, North Carolina. It's called “Choosing Wholeness Over Goodness” and will be a combination of On Our Best Behavior and Courtney's techniques. Honestly, I can't wait—I hope you'll all join us. The link to sign up is also in the episode page, or the link in bio on my Instagram account, @ eliseloehnen. We're kicking off 2024 with something a little different: a conversation between Enneagram coach Courtney Smith and psychological astrologer Jennifer Freed, PhD.
