An internationally recognized expert on edible & medicinal wild plants, Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen, Ph.D. half-jokingly describes himself as a “scientist raised by wolves.” Merriwether's brain earned him a master's in medicinal chemistry and a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry, but his heart has always driven him to learn and share the secrets of nature to anyone ready to hear them. His love of nature was instilled in him by his parents and grandparents, who used nature's gifts to feed and care for the family. Endless hours of his childhood were spent in the wild…and this continues on to today, where he leads plant walkabouts across Texas, teaching people the ethical way to gather food and medicine. This deep study of plants and their properties caused people to call him “Merriwether,” after the famed botanist/explorer Meriwether Lewis. His professional chemistry career was that of a healer of the Earth, developing ways to safely and cleanly interact with its gifts. Among the results of that time are fifteen patents using natural plants, microorganisms, and oyster chemistry to make the world safer. Because of his past, he was chosen to be the medicine man for Medicine Man Plant Co., a 3-person company devoted to bringing back the medicinal plants, mushrooms, and movements our ancestors evolved using. Merriwether's study of early people, combined with his scientific understanding of the human body, has led him to believe many modern health issues are because we no longer interact with nature the way we evolved. Just as our diet needs critical vitamins and minerals for proper health, we also need certain physical, mental, and social actions to avoid “lifestyle” health problems. This in turn led “Merriwether” to realize that a lot of modern health issues is because the modern world doesn't give our prehistoric bodies the mental and physical inputs we evolved to need. He now tries to lure people into including simple but effective caveman activities into their lives to give them back their ancestral strength. He has created and started a supplement company and is open & honest about his journey. As a big believer in supplementation, I am excited to introduce you to Mark "Merriweather" Vorderbruggen. Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen, Ph.D. chemist's path to becoming a medicine man was long but not unexpected. He always knew three things: 1. He loved nature. 2. He loved science. 3. He loved taking care of people.#1 & #3 came from his parents, both who taught he and his two brothers the ways of nature and how it can heal people physical, emotionally, and spiritually. His love of science led him to getting a M.S. in medicinal chemistry and a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry with the plan to go into the pharmaceutical industry, but his expertise in the chemistries of nature led him into a different path. For 20 years he applied his talents to novel, natural chemical ways of protecting and healing Mother Earth and those who live upon her, leading to 15 patents, ranging from using cinnamon as a corrosion inhibitor to preventing silicosis from sand dust by coating it with a self-assembling oyster shell mimic. At the same time, he developed an international reputation as an expert in edible and medicinal wild plants, spending his evenings and weekends reconnecting people to the natural resources their ancestors used to survive. It was during this time he was given the nickname “Merriwether” after the Meriwether of Lewis & Clark fame – a scientist sent into the wild to bring back knowledge of its beneficial flora. This role led to the writing of Idiot's Guide Foraging and the soon to be released Outdoor Adventure Guide Foraging books, along with a monthly wild food article for the fashion/lifestyle magazine CHARM. He's also appeared on numerous TV shows, radio, and podcasts to preach the benefits of cavemanosity – how acting like a caveman is necessary to remain healthy in our modern world.More recently, he became the formulator for Medicine Man Plant Co., finally bringing forth at a greater level, his ability to help people with the power of plants and mushrooms. As both an herbalist and a chemist, Merriwether examines both traditions and scientific research to find and develop new formulations of ancient plants for modern issues. Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen, Ph.D. has always walked the path of the medicine man. He grew up in the wilds of Minnesota where his parents and grandparents utilized the amazing wild foods and medicinal plants found in local woods, fields, and lakes. His parents understood the healing powers in nature...whether it be plant, mushroom, or physical interactions. The healing connection with nature that Dr. Vorderbruggen has known since childhood is foundation to who he is today. His passion for foraging and wildcrafting comes across in his foraging classes and medicine making workshops, the daily plant posts on social media, his internet show “Merriwether's World!”, monthly foraging articles for CHARM East Texas magazine, authoring books such Idiot's Guide Foraging and Outdoors Adventure Guide Foraging (to be published 2022), along with countless appearances on TV, radio, and interviews across the internet. He extols the benefits of being more in touch (and taste!) with the small bits of wild that were still available. In this episode Dr.Mark Merriwether Vorderbruggen , " The Medicine Man" describes the benefits of medicinal plants . Mark "Merriwether" Vorderbruggen, Ph.D. is often (somewhat) jokingly described as a scientist raised by wolves. Having a M.S. in medicinal chemistry and a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry. he brings science into the world of wild edible and medicinal plants. On the science side he has fourteen patents and numerous articles in research journals from his career as an industrial chemist. But his true love is plants and the miracles they contain. Since 2008 his website www.foragingtexas.com has been one of the top wild edible/medicinal plant sites on the internet; he has written countless foraging articles for a wide variety of magazines; taught hundreds of foraging walkabouts; appeared on radio, TV, and podcasts galore; wrote the acclaimed book Idiot's Guide Foraging (available on Amazon); and was co-creator of the Wazoo Survival Gear foraging bandana. In 2016 he turned his herbal chemistry skills to consumer goods to help develop the Workman's Friend line of skin care products. In 2020 he made the biggest leap of his life to become the medicine man for Medicine Man Plant Co. where he can finally bring forth the ancient plants that can still help with modern issues. I remember as a kid getting in trouble for eating the "onion grass" and my neighbor teaching us how to eat the nectar from the honeysuckles. I didn't know it at the time but this was foraging. I love the idea of being able to walk outside and find some wild food to eat. To learn more about this subject I read Mark "Merriwether" Vorderbruggen, Ph.D's book Foraging: Over 30 Tasty Recipes to Turn Your Foraged Finds into Feasts. I was so delighted when he agreed to come on as a guest! I learned so much in this conversation. Not only is Mark an expert forager, but he also has a BS in professional chemistry, an MS in medicinal chemistry and a PH.D in Physical Organic Chemistry. You may not be aware that many of our culinary herbs and spices started out as medicine. I asked chemist and plant expert (and product developer for Medicine Man Plant Co) to do a deep dive on a spice everyone knows, but many may not know the benefits of: black pepper. Yes, it tastes great with salt on french fries, but it also works with other healthy compounds to enable them to work better: things like turmeric and cayenne pepper, for example, by helping your body absorb more of those healthy compounds. Find out more about how black pepper works in this episode, and check out the previous episode with Mark all about another common pantry item: sage. Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen, Ph.D. grew up in the wilds of Minnesota where his parents and grandparents utilized the amazing wild foods and medicinal plants found in local woods, fields, and lakes. He received a BS in professional chemistry from South Dakota State University followed by a MS in medicinal chemistry and a PH.D. in physical organic chemistry from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the oldest technical university in the US. After graduation a strange twist of fate set him traveling the world as a petroleum chemist rather than in pharmaceuticals. However, his knowledge of natural products blessed him with the ability to tap natural compounds to replace traditionally hazardous oilfield chemicals. During this career he earned fourteen chemical patents that made the petroleum industry safer for all. After 20 years of that he moved on to the position of R&D Manager for a consumer chemical product company. Here Dr. Vorderbruggen reinvented their line of construction chemical products, safely and effectively replacing the dangerous compounds the industry had been using. He also spearheaded the company's R&D efforts for a whole new line of personal care products designed to protect people from the toxins they encounter daily.
