Did you know that only 15% of African safaris are Black-owned?Since their colonial origins in the late 19th century, the safari operations on the continent have largely been headed by white men, with local communities rarely seeing the benefits.(This extends beyond safaris to luxury tourism in Africa, which has been linked to extractive practices and degradation of local habitats.)Mitti Hicks is a travel writer and former broadcast journalist who first reported on this issue for Travel Noire. In this episode, Mitti will share how you can choose to do safari differently, seeing wild animals while supporting local communities AND black owner operators instead. We are an audience-supported platform. Have a comment or question? Click this sentence to send us a message, and we might answer it in a future episode.Welcome to Season 6, Episode 12 of Winning Isn't Easy. In this episode, we'll dive into How Disability Carriers Manufacture Reasons to Deny Claims.Imagine qualifying for Long-Term Disability benefits, only to have your insurer cite a vacation, a college class, or a game of pickleball as proof you can still work. Surveillance footage, social media posts, and selective medical reviews can quickly become the basis for a denial you never saw coming. ERISA disability claims often turn less on diagnoses or surgeries and more on how insurers interpret daily activities, medical records, and how “stable” a condition appears on paper. Routine moments of normal life can be reframed as evidence of employability, while peer reviews, surveillance, and insurer-friendly standards of review are used to justify terminating benefits. In this episode, we explore how everyday activities are weaponized against claimants, how medical stability is reinterpreted to argue work capacity, and why courts sometimes uphold these denials despite serious medical conditions. If you're navigating - or trying to protect - an ERISA disability claim, this episode explains why careful documentation, precision, and strategy can make all the difference. In this episode, we'll cover the following topics:One - Can Taking an African Safari, Attending College Classes, and Playing Pickleball Destroy Your ERISA Long-Term Disability Claim? Two - How a Hartford ERISA Disability Claim for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Spine Surgery Played Out at the Any Occupation Stage of the ClaimThree - Is Discovery Allowed in an ERISA Disability Claim When the Carrier or Plan Has Created Reasons to Deny Your Claim?Whether you're a claimant, or simply seeking valuable insights into the disability claims landscape, this episode provides essential guidance to help you succeed in your journey. An African safari can feel completely out of reach for most families, but what if there were ways to bring that cost down using points and miles? In this episode, Jess, Megan, and Pam break down how to make a safari more affordable, from flights to lodging and everything in between. The Squad walks through real examples of how to get to Africa using points, including options to Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. You'll learn about safari lodging, including when it makes sense to use points for accommodations and where paying cash may be the better option. They also share additional ways to offset costs that you may have by using your credit cards. This episode will help you find the right balance between points and cash so that a trip like this feels possible, even if it is not completely free. Krunching Gears - The Rally Podcast, Episode 14. East African Safari Classic Rally. In this episode, we talk with Keith McIvor and David Burns following their sensational 5th overall finish at the 2025 East African Safari Classic Rally. They take us behind the wheel of one of the toughest endurance events in motorsport, sharing the highs, challenges, and defining moments of their campaign. The journey goes far beyond competition—having raised over £30,000 to fund a clean water borehole in a Kenyan village, their story is one of real impact. We are also joined by Clerk of the Course Andy Gilmore, who offers a fascinating look at what it takes to organise and deliver such a monumental rally as he delves into the work that is done by an incredibly small team.
Today, I'm unveiling my definitive list of what I think are the 10 greatest African hunting books ever written. This list of African safari book recommendations includes works from people like Hemingway, Roosevelt, Ruark, Capstick, and other legendary writers. These Africa hunting books have everything you could ask for: heart-pounding adventures, adrenaline soaked drama, close calls that will make your knuckles turn white and even a few deliciously scandalous tales of betrayal, courage, cowardice, possible murder, more than one love triangle, one very good dog, and lots of talk about rifles, bullets, and cartridges. Craig Boddington joins me on the show today as we discuss trends he has observed since his first African hunting safari nearly 49 years ago. Craig and I talk about countries that have opened and closed hunting since his first safari, dramatic changes in the populations of various animals (for better and worse) that have occurred since then, trends he has noticed in various Africa countries in terms of where he'd go to hunt different animals, differences in availability of ammunition loaded with different bullets and for different cartridges, and even how hunting safaris are conducted differently today vs the 1970s. How do you separate legit African safari outfitters from salesmen at hunting conventions like SCI and Dallas Safari Club? In this episode, we break down the three most important questions every hunter must ask before booking an African hunting safari: 1️⃣ How big is the property you hunt? 2️⃣ How many hunters do you take at one time? 3️⃣ What's a realistic starter package for a first-time Africa hunter? These questions reveal hunting pressure, ethics, experience quality, and honesty — without relying on marketing brochures or trophy photos. We explain: Why property size matters more than trophy lists How hunter-to-PH ratios affect your actual hunting experience What a good first African safari package really looks like Common mistakes first-time Africa hunters make Red flags to watch for when speaking to safari exhibitors What ethical, sustainable African hunting looks like on the ground Whether you're planning your first plains game safari, comparing African outfitters, or attending SCI or DSC to book a hunt, this episode gives you practical, real-world advice from inside the African hunting industry.
‘Lloyd was bitten by Africa and grew up with her dust on his feet and her breath in his lungs.'Lloyd was born and raised in the wild and dynamic KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Like many South Africans, he has since chosen to base himself in the quieter, more peaceful suburbs of Twickenham. Despite this, Lloyd still spends much of his time in Africa, either embarking on his own adventures or guiding others through the African wilderness. They're not fed. They're not bred. They're not tame. They're just there. And we drop in and we're amongst them. And it's the most wonderful thing.Having travelled with Lloyd in South Africa, and ironically through Andrew's home town before any of us knew he existed, Lloyd was then instrumental in Andrew and I getting to together here in London. Now all as close friends, we were keen to give you an experience of the inspirational man behind three incredible books Africa Bites, Confessions of an African Safari Guide and his newly released Paddling the Dragon. You will get to hear about how he found his way to guiding, how he's seen tourism in Africa change, why writing is such a big part of his life and the emotions he has when he's out in the wilderness. We get to hear about his ‘lists', his motivations, his concerns about the world, but mostly it's his effervescent honest energy which leaves us wanting to know more….If you ever get the chance to book a personal safari with Lloyd you will experience something quite unique, magical and even soulful. A real once in a lifetime, and hurry, as the world is changing, and to find someone who truly knows the locals, the secret lodges, what works, what doesn't. Thank you Lloyd for your friendship and for sharing your love of Africa, animals, writing, adventure and the wilderness with us.More…To book an African Safari, or a talk from Lloyd you can email him here. You can buy any of his books on the link below, or if you live in South Africa or somewhere Amazon doesn't operate so well in, then do contact Lloyd and he'll find a way to get it to you. Welcome to Episode 43 of That Greenwich Life! If you're looking for travel inspo for your next vacation, this episode is for you. Most of you know I've been a travel writer for over a decade, and if I had a dollar for every person who has asked me through the years, “What's the best trip you've ever taken?” or “What trip should everyone take at least once in their lifetime?,” I'd have my own private jet big enough to fit each and every one of you. This week I'm joined by Harsh Patil, the CEO and founder of Xplorearth, a luxury travel company specializing in bucket-list experiences, to talk more about my answer to both of those questions time and again – African safaris! What moves you? What is it in your life that moves your soul and compels you to do something and work to make a difference? For Sue Tidwell it was when she accompanied her husband on a safari to Tanzania. As a non-hunter herself, she saw the passion of her husband and as she says in her book, "when you love someone, their dream becomes your dream." Together they flew to Tanzania so Rick could pursue his dream of hunting Africa. What happened on this trip changed Sue profoundly. She saw firsthand how hunting has transformed the lives of the people of Tanzania and beyond. How hunting saves species, how controlled hunting conserves the landscape, how hunting provides jobs, food and income for hundreds and thousands of people living in Africa. She saw first hand how sustained hunting of these beautiful animals has helped the people of these countries and animals around the world. In her book Cries of the Savanna, Sue captuers the thrill of the hunt and the essence of the people who make it all happen. From the tents to the bush to the relationships she has built with the people she encounters, Sue takes the reader along with her as she struggles to make sense of it all and writes convincenly and beautifully. Cries of the Savanna is one of the best books ever penned on hunting Africa and should rank as the highest apologetic work on hunting in the last 50 years. She is a gifted writer and this book is a must read for anyone who wants to hunt Africa. For anyone who questions the ethics of hunting, and for anyone studying conservation around the globe. www.suetidwell.com www.taurususa.com www.cva.com www.birddogcoffeebeans.com www.himtnjerky.com www.citrusafe.com www.elimishieldhunt.com www.nukemhunting.com www.christianoutdoors.org
Welcome back to another episode of Points Talk with the Travel Mom Squad, where today's travel tale is all about adaptability and adventure! One of the most anticipated trips of the year was Pam's African safari in the majestic Maasai Mara, complete with luxurious stays and game drives—all meticulously planned using points. Pam was ready to celebrate her birthday surrounded by the breathtaking landscapes of Kenya, but nature had other plans…hit play to hear the full story, or keep reading! Just as the fun got started with a pre-safari stay in Mauritius, indulging in the island's beauty, an unexpected email turned everything upside down. The safari was abruptly canceled leaving her with two options: scramble or salvage the trip. Thanks to points and miles, she chose not just to salvage, but turn it into an opportunity and adventure of a lifetime! Transforming potential disappointment into a new story, she pivoted, and points and miles came to the rescue, allowing her to reshape her itinerary without a hitch. In Sardinia, Pam swapped what would have been safari jeeps for coastal views and Italian cuisine. Each unexpected twist brought new sights and experiences—from luxurious hotels to local culture, proving that sometimes the best stories come from the unplanned. Through it all, the journey was smoothed over by the flexibility that comes with using points and miles—proving invaluable in turning what could have been a major travel fail into an array of unforgettable moments! So, whether you find yourself facing canceled flights, unexpected weather, or last-minute changes, remember, with the right mindset and a good stash of points, you can turn any travel mishap into a new adventure. Hit play to dive deeper into our journey and discover how she made the best of an unpredictable situation!
