Damon Samuria has overcome adversity on many fronts, including surviving the rage of a father whose outrageous expectations he very nearly met. That adversity is woven into his story: it's the story of a very smart dude who's been successful at virtually everything he's undertaken... Of course, some of those endeavors - like building a $250K/week illegal marijuana business - were admittedly dumb decisions. Another paradox lay in his moral compass, work ethic, kind soul, and sense of loyalty...attributes that served him so well that after his 11-month stint behind bars he was offered a safer, cushier "executive role" - in the crime syndicate with which he was affiliated. Instead of taking the gig, Damon made an intentional mindset shift that led to working with some the most well known business leaders of today. On a mission to give back, he has leveraged his knowledge, skills and experiences to help hundreds of entrepreneurs wanting to start and grow the businesses of their dreams.00:00 - From Zero to $250K/week03:00 - Overachiever08:00 - Expectations & Repercussions12:00 - Brings Your Genius to Work Days16:00 - Brush with Failure20:00 - Runaway to Juvie29:00 - Abuse35:00 - A Bright Future in Sales42:00 - Set Up & Taken Down49:00 - Commitments, Incarceration, & a Possible Promotion55:00 - Right-Headed, Rebuilding a Family, and Learning the Right Way to Succeed"My authentic true self has never changed."Find Damon:https://dsamuria.carrd.co https://www.linkedin.com/in/dsamuriaIf you enjoyed listening to Truth Tastes Funny, please leave a 5-star rating and a 300-word review on Apple Podcasts (click Listen on Apple Podcasts to access review option)Subscribe to our YouTube ChannelCheck out Hersh's branded storytelling podcast: YES, BRANDBoldly taking brands where they desperately wanna goFollow us on Instagram: @truthtastesfunnyFollow Hersh on Instagram: @Hersh4allon LinkedIn: HershRephunon YouTube: HershRephunon Twitter: @TruthTstsFunnyOur Website: TruthTastesFunnyContact Us

Chase Thornock's Magnificent Life: Autonomic Mastery

While in Salt Lake City, UT, recently, I had the pleasure of meeting Chase Thornock. When I heard part of his story - a journey of self-healing in the face of a deadly autoimmune disease - I was eager to have him on the show. Only when we sat down did I learn that we shared - to very different degrees - the same affliction: Crohn's Disease. Yes, Chase's story is inspiring, but it goes beyond the remarkable aspects of treatment, it speaks to that moment at which we confront mortality and life's energy in a single instant, making a choice that will lead us down a road we never envisioned. In Chase's own words:"I am a husband to an incredible woman and father to 3 wonderful little boys. A year after my wife and I were married I was the CEO of a venture backed software company and seemingly on top of the world, but I was incredibly sick with an autoimmune disease. After multiple surgeries, being fed through a line to my heart for months on end and almost dying from sepsis, I was bedridden and the doctors let me know they had no more answers for me. It was during that time that I began preparing for the worst. I raised millions of dollars from my bed and built several assisted living buildings to try to provide for my family for when I died. It was in my darkest time that I had my moment of clarity: Only I could heal myself. The doctors could not. Only I could. I sacrificed greatly and learned how to control and manipulate my mind and my body through my autonomic nervous system. I learned how to heal myself. Now I share my mastery techniques through What Magnificence with health care professionals, executives and entrepreneurs all around the world to help them heal and reconnect their minds and their bodies."Find Chase: www.whatmagnificence.com | https://link.chtbl.com/WhatmagnificenceIf you enjoyed listening to Truth Tastes Funny, please leave a 5-star rating and a 300-word review on Apple Podcasts (click Listen on Apple Podcasts to access review option)Subscribe to our YouTube ChannelCheck out Hersh's branded storytelling podcast: YES, BRANDBoldly taking brands where they desperately wanna goFollow us on Instagram: @truthtastesfunnyFollow Hersh on Instagram: @Hersh4allon LinkedIn: HershRephunon YouTube: HershRephunon Twitter: @TruthTstsFunnyOur Website: TruthTastesFunnyContact Us

I'm a pretty good conversationalist. But this episode provides a little less conversation and a little more wisdom. My guest, Michael Levy, has become a world leader on the philosophy of truth and wisdom - although not many people know it. His 17 inspirational books have never been advertised or marketed. Michael feels authentic works will eventually find their place in humanity by word of mouth over time, even if it takes a few 100 years. And it's hard to argue with Mike, because his only interest is in joy, truth, and where to find more of it. So, I consider my role in this instance to be that of stage-setter and student. And my hope is to engage you, the listener, in this 1-hour thinking exercise.  One of the best remarks received was from an old friend he grew up with in  Manchester UK, in the same street of row houses with no bathroom, an outside toilet and no running hot water or heating, just a coal fire, in a poor neighborhood in. The friend went on to university and became dean of two universities. They met many years later in Manchester and had dinner. After a 3 hour chat they shook hands and and on saying goodbye the friend said; “Mike you are completely untainted by education.” It is the best compliment Michael has ever been paid. His works do not follow any past or present philosophers and he has never found the time to read any books.Chapter Markers:01:34 - The Absurdity of Life04:58 - The Gift of "Stupid"14:37 - "Untainted by Education"19:46 - "We're All Role Playing"30:27 - Nourishing and Nurturing46:00 - A Better LifeMichael is an international radio host, a keynote speaker on cruise ships, radio and TV. Son of iconic Chicago sports reporter Tim Weigel, Rafer came up in the news business, and I chose this interview to close out Season 2, because while we're just two dudes talkin' about  life, news, and storytelling, it's hard not to think about the Dominion lawsuit against FOX, and the general complexion of "news" in a post-truth world. And, of course, the old adage, "If it bleeds, it leads." Also fascinating is Rafer's experience - as an apolitical reporter - being caught between left and right after breaking the Jussie Smollett case: Smollett was convicted in late 2021 on charges that he staged an anti-gay, racist attack on himself on a frigid January 2019 night and then lied to Chicago police about it. "F" Means Anything but Failure for Innovative Adman John Follis

If you're a regular listener to Truth Tastes Funny, you probably know that I started my career in NY on Madison Avenue after attending School of Visual Arts. Well, my guest John Follis is a Madison Ave adman who made waves before I ever dipped my toe in the ocean. John's campaign for Sorrell Ridge Fruit Spreads - citing their jam's all-natural ingredients - knocked Smuckers for a loop (maybe it was the tagline, "With 100% fruit, it has to be better."). The ad was so effective it became a case taught at the Harvard Business School and featured in Forbes. In ‘93, Follis/DeVito/Verdi was the second most awarded agency in New York. That same year John formed Follis Inc to include a focus on non-traditional and online marketing. In 2003, in response to the shifting media landscape and to provide an alternative to the traditional ad agency model, he created "Follis Marketing Therapy".  And, in 2006, John created "The Follis Marketing Report" blog and "The Marketing Show with John Follis" podcast syndicated on iTunes. John has always made time for public service and for one very successful public service campaign that he spearheaded, he was honored at The White House. As a result of John's career success he's been invited to write for ADWEEK and speak at venues including The World Business Academy and Yale University. Now for the funny part: John flunked out of his first college advertising class and was told by the instructor that he would never be successful in advertising.Find John:Wiki bio: https://en.everybodywiki.com/John_Follis”True Stories” series; https://bit.ly/3Kok4GJRecent article: https://bit.ly/3vr2ufthttps://follisinc.comIf you enjoyed listening to Truth Tastes Funny, please leave a 5-star rating and a 300-word review on Apple Podcasts (click Listen on Apple Podcasts to access review option)Check out Hersh's new podcast: YES, BRANDBoldly taking brands where they desperately wanna goFollow us on Instagram: @truthtastesfunnyFollow Hersh on Instagram: @Hersh4allon LinkedIn: HershRephunon YouTube: HershRephunon Twitter: @TruthTstsFunnyOur Website: TruthTastesFunnyContact UsExplore Branded Ventures with Truth Tastes Funny and Hersh's YES, BRAND Podcast

Here's a bit more about what that looks like: As an international sales mentor, speaker and trainer, I partner with female entrepreneurs and sales professionals who are ready to blast through six figures in income, learn to sell in a way that feels authentic to them and fulfill their deepest purpose and calling. With over 20 years in sales, I found that most sales training offered was not designed with women in mind. The techniques suggested often feel unnatural, and it can leave us feeling burned out, disheartened and frustrated. I'm on a mission to change that, and hope you'll join me!"

Typically, Truth Tastes Funny episodes are stand-alones, surfing freely from one topic to another. However, response to Season 2/Episode 14 with Therapy Twins Joan and Jane Landino has been so strong, that I am bookending it with Rabbi Alfredo Borodowski - aka "The Bipolar Rabbi." Bipolar disorder symptoms can be misleading. Manic moods can lead a sufferer to believe they are invincible, that they are beyond treatment, rejecting bipolar medication. Further, as my interview with Rabbi Borodowski  reveals, we are still in the very early stages of mining the mentally ill for insights that can change the game in terms of treatment for mental health issues of all kinds. The Rabbi's work goes far beyond mental health awareness or even treatment. "I want the mentally ill to package this knowledge and sell it to the world. I want the mentally ill to be entrepreneurial," he says. "Those of us with mental illness have not yet bought into our own strengths. We are looking at ourselves like second-class citizens. We have to shift a paradigm about how we see ourselves. Stigma is not going to diminish because we beg for compassion. Stigma is going to diminish because we bring to the world our added value and contribution, and because we take our place as players around the table of proactive wisdom."Find Rabbi Borodowski here:https://www.bipolarrabbi.com/https://www.facebook.com/bipolarrabbihttps://www.instagram.com/bipolarrabbi/https://www.linkedin.com/in/alfredo-borodowski/More from Rabbi Alfredo Borodowski:"My name is Rabbi Alfredo Borodowski, Ph.D., MSW, also known as “The Bipolar Rabbi.” In June 2013, the Mamaroneck police arrested me for impersonating a police officer. I was hospitalized and diagnosed with bipolar. In the ensuing seven days, I was fired from my position as executive director of a prestigious institute and ridiculed by the press as “the Road Rage Rabbi.” My world collapsed. I then spent several months paralyzed on a couch with depression. But I persevered and thrived once again, becoming a social worker. A factor tipped the scale in my favor; I discovered Positive Psychology. Positive psychology studies the strengths that make us fulfill our potential. Knowing my strengths allowed me to overcome my negative thoughts and move forward. My upcoming interactive book, The Exceptional Wisdom of the Most Unusual Minds, invites readers to create a community of mental illness wisdom. Has it become easier to diagnose, in adults and children alike?  Join me for a fascinating discussion with Avigail Gimpel, an author, coach, and educator whose new book, HyperHealing, Show me the Science: Making Sense of Your Child's ADHD Diagnosis (a follow-up to her first book, “HyperHealing”) is based on many years of research and practice both as a mother of a good number of kids diagnosed with ADHD, as well as a classroom teacher of children struggling with ADHD symptoms. As we emerged from isolation, many people I know were mentioning ADHD, either diagnosed in their children or themselves, and speaking with this immensely qualified guest was illuminating!About Avigail:Avigail Gimpel was born in 1974, the 3rd of eight children. She got her first teaching job in 1996, in a school for immigrant children in queens New York. That same year she ran a Sunday school for Jewish public-school children. She Got her BA from Touro college and completed her graduate studies at Touro college graduate school for Special Education in Manhattan, New York. She married Daniel Gimpel in 1998 while teaching in an all-boys orthodox elementary school. In this school, she developed an intervention program for student struggling with ADHD symptoms. She and Daniel moved to Israel soon after their marriage. Avigail continued her education there, earning advanced degrees in teaching reading to children with Dyslexia and cognitive education for children with ADHD symptoms. In 2003, she and her husband, with three small children moved to Moscow, Russia. There she taught in three different schools and headed up the English department in one of the schools. Upon their return to Israel, she immersed herself in studying and developing treatment options for ADHD for her own six kids and many struggling students. She collaborated with her father-in-law, Dr. Amnon Gimpel (psychiatrist and neurologist), and developing a parent training program. She moved on to develop a teacher's training program. Avigail teaches in Hertzog college as well as lectures in Israeli schools and to parent groups all over Israel. She works in private practice, training parents to become ADHD coaches to their children, and spouses to learn a new love language to communicate with respect. Find Avigail:www.hyperhealing.orgIG: @hyperhealing.adhd If you enjoyed listening to Truth Tastes Funny, please leave a 5-star rating and a 300-word review on Apple Podcasts (click Listen on Apple Podcasts to access review option)Follow us on Instagram: @truthtastesfunnyFollow Hersh on Instagram: @Hersh4allon LinkedIn: HershRephunon YouTube: HershRephunon Twitter: @TruthTstsFunnyOur Website: TruthTastesFunnyContact UsExplore Branded Ventures with Truth Tastes Funny and Hersh's YES, BRAND Podcast

He and I both lead with it, which is why we get along so well. Another reason is that we share a background in helping brands - personal and corporate - tell their stories. Rich is on a mission to serve those who can, in his words, "envision clearly whom they can help or what they can do to make the world a better place or make people's lives better or add value." It was an honor to meet Rich when a mutual friend suggested he appear on TTF, and we have a blast together each time we connect, so I hope you dig this episode!Key Takeaways:You can be brand agnostic, and still believe in God.The clarity with which a brand speaks, shapes its impact.Generous or greedy, patient or impatient, we have so many choices, and these shape our impact.Who is Rick Kozak? He is rocket fuel for people who want their Brand to IMPACT others' lives, or the world. Rich is the sage voice of IMPACT-Driven Branding. His next book, IMPACT-Driven Branding--The Brand YOU Will Become: How To Define It and The Steps to Achieve It,  shares the process in HOW-TO content, just like Rich shares in his Online 1-Day Intensives and 4-hour Live Workshops.Rich, the Founder & CEO of RichBrands, has experienced 44 years Defining & Launching Brands, and then Marketing them. I've long maintained that a**holes are decent people minus a sense of humor. And I want to preface this episode by making sure that my audience knows I welcome as guests those with differing opinions and positions across humanhood and the political spectrum - as long as you bring your ability to laugh at life and its mysteries. My guest this episode is Jeremy Sherman, PhD, who shares my core belief that humor is the saving grace of humanity. He's authored 1000 articles, with 10 million readers, for Psychology Today, and his latest book is called What's Up With Assholes? How To Spot And Stop Them Without Becoming One. Our chat is a marvelous romp through the amusing yet imposing garden of assholia, where egos run amuck. The good news? There's nothing here that some earnest psychoproctology can't resolve. And by resolve, I don't mean cure. True a**holism is incurable. By “resolve,” I mean “to firmly determine." In this episode, we firmly determine what a**holes are, how they present, why they persist - and how indeed we might someday stop them.   Key Takeaways:A**holes are the biggest threat faced by humanity, representing a more immediate existential danger than climate change or nuclear arms.Call out an a**hole as soon as possible - they are like vampires, burned by the light Yes, a**holes can be shamed; they will not feel remorse, but they are vulnerable to embarrassment!More About JeremyJeremy Sherman, PhD, is a cradle-to-grave science researcher and writer studying the unbroken chain from the origins of life from chemistry to humankind's grave situation today. He's the author of the Columbia University Press book Neither Ghost Nor Machine: The emergence and nature of selves. For 25 years, he has been a close research collaborator with Harvard/Berkeley neuroscientist Terrence Deacon.Sherman's all about making advanced ideas intuitive, practical, and funny, because from a natural science perspective….the human condition is pretty ironic.Links:jeremysherman.comhttps://linktr.ee/JeremyshermanIf you enjoyed listening to Truth Tastes Funny, please leave a 5-star rating and a 300-word review on Apple Podcasts (click Listen on Apple Podcasts to access review option)Follow us on Instagram: @truthtastesfunnyFollow Hersh on Instagram: @Hersh4allon LinkedIn: HershRephunon Twitter: @TruthTstsFunnyOur Website: TruthTastesFunnyContact UsExplore Branding Partnerships with Truth Tastes Funny and Hersh's YES, BRAND Podcast

Marci Warhaft - “The Resiliency Rebel” - is a Resiliency coach and founder of The Fit vs Fiction Body Image workshops. She was named one of Canada's Top 100 Health influencers for 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 by Optimyz fitness magazine. Marci is the author of The Good Stripper: A Soccer Mom's Memoir of Lies, Loss and Lap Dances, where she shares in raw, honest and intimate detail her eye-popping journey to self discovery. By turning a life of turmoil into an example of tenacity and survival, Marci uses her experiences to help others release themselves of the shame, guilt and insecurities that keep them from living their lives with the joy they deserve.Sometimes, we listen to someone's life story and we think, “OMG, that's nuts!” or “How can all this happen to one person?” While Hersh's interview Marci does have that quality, this episode is about ALL our lives. It comes down to fortitude, and what it takes to push through to the life we're really meant to have, and the work we need to do to survive and to thrive in this world. Speaking of survival, Marci's survivor guilt after losing her older brother to illness as a teenager is central to the challenges she's faced and combated. Loss may be in the back or at the forefront of our struggle to keep it together, but it's there, in the mix, and we must learn how to grieve in order to grow. Key Takeaways:A new mother with a great mother is likely to be a great mother, even if she thinks she can lever live up to the standards set by her own mother, and believes she's a terrible mother.A "family doctor" who tells a 17 year old patient that she should lose 10 lbs before putting on a bathing suit is not fit to be a doctor or near your family. Our problems aren't always based on reasonability, so we need to find another way to address them. But we CAN address them, and it's worth it.Find Marci:https://www.marciwarhaft.comhttps://www.thegoodstripper.comhttps://www.facebook.com/fitvsfiction/https://www.instagram.com/marciwarhaft/

"There's a certain pact we make with the devil to enjoy life in a way that makes us feel fulfilled. So we're not doing heinous crimes on our own volition, but we're enabling inequity. We're enabling climate disasters. We're enabling, you know, take your pick, because we've decided that on some level we are happier." This quote from my interview with Humans First founder - and serial entrepreneur - Rob Krecak forms the backdrop for this conversation, which is as useful in terms of practical solutions as it is provocative regarding the subject of social media overload and technology mindfulness.Key Takeaways:You don't need to delete your apps to improve your focus; try moving an app to the back page of your apps, which will at least reduce your compulsion to check every few minutes!Technology can be a tool for good, and it usually starts out that way - but consider the players and what they have to gain. Going a little further, you can also use certain apps only from your computer, and reserve your phone for what benefits YOU.If studies show social media is increasing stress while also decreasing our ability to deal with it...maybe we need to prioritize our mental well being.More About Rob:Rob Krecak is a thrill-seeker, self-professed nerd, question asker, voracious reader, competitor, keynote speaker, and business builder. When he first got his Wall Street job as a sell-side equity analyst out of college, he thought he'd made it. After buying everything he wanted on his wishlist, he realized that he still wasn't happy. He listened to his deep-down desire to help more people by leaving finance to eventually own three Anytime Fitness health clubs, four uBreakiFix cell phone repair stores, and a tech startup. As someone vulnerable to technology's addictive hold from a young age—video games and Facebook in particular—Rob is on a mission to help individuals and companies reduce stress and get back time to master their careers and lives. He founded Humans First to provide a one-of-a-kind consulting experience that analyzes people's efficiency and energy by paying attention to their technology mindfulness.Rob thinks there is always something to be learned from everyone, and he lets his curiosity guide conversations. In his spare time, he likes to do CrossFit, better himself through reading, travel, and spend time with his wife Niki.Go to:http://www.humansfirst.us

What role does marketing play in a post-truth world? Can we believe in ourselves enough to sell the image to other people? Hersh consults with Lorraine Ball, Marketing Strategist, Marketing Educator, and host of the More Than A Few Words podcast, to get a handle on what's always worked, what doesn't work, and what authenticity really means.Lorraine shares her stories of the glass ceiling effect, beginning as a Brooklyn girl working the phones for an oil company in West Texas: she could put on a Texas drawl, but she was still a woman, and it was a struggle to break into the C-Suite. Her goal was to be a VP, but every path was blocked. She cut her own swath, forging ahead toward success, noting that it took 30 years for that company to finally welcome women into the executive ranks.Key Takeaways:It's not about influencers, it's about influencing - What keeps your customer up at night? This central question will inspire your authenticity Our “glorious failures” are what clients pay us forIf Lorraine can shed her NY accent, so can youse!Related Links:https://morethanafewwords.com/
