An internationally recognized expert on edible & medicinal wild plants, Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen, Ph.D. half-jokingly describes himself as a “scientist raised by wolves.” Merriwether's brain earned him a master's in medicinal chemistry and a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry, but his heart has always driven him to learn and share the secrets of nature to anyone ready to hear them. His love of nature was instilled in him by his parents and grandparents, who used nature's gifts to feed and care for the family. Endless hours of his childhood were spent in the wild…and this continues on to today, where he leads plant walkabouts across Texas, teaching people the ethical way to gather food and medicine. This deep study of plants and their properties caused people to call him “Merriwether,” after the famed botanist/explorer Meriwether Lewis. His professional chemistry career was that of a healer of the Earth, developing ways to safely and cleanly interact with its gifts. Among the results of that time are fifteen patents using natural plants, microorganisms, and oyster chemistry to make the world safer. Because of his past, he was chosen to be the medicine man for Medicine Man Plant Co., a 3-person company devoted to bringing back the medicinal plants, mushrooms, and movements our ancestors evolved using. Merriwether's study of early people, combined with his scientific understanding of the human body, has led him to believe many modern health issues are because we no longer interact with nature the way we evolved. Just as our diet needs critical vitamins and minerals for proper health, we also need certain physical, mental, and social actions to avoid “lifestyle” health problems. When Hersh launched TTF, he committed to engaging fellow truth-seekers with diverse points of view, in pursuit of answers, and having some laughs in the process. He delivers - and so does Mark "Merriwether" Vorderbruggen, Ph.D. Key Takeaways:To human better, we can GET OUTSIDE, and ENGAGE with nature, because so many answers are there...and it's nicer than our basement. Some outcomes may be inevitable (just look at Beer), but science is ultimately our friend.Hersh may have six degrees of Kevin Bacon, while Merriwether has more useful Degrees from universities, but when it's 100 degrees outside, who doesn't appreciate air conditioning?? What started out as a career in chemistry with a focus on natural products morphed into becoming an internationally-recognized expert in edible and medicinal plants. This in turn led “Merriwether” to realize that a lot of modern health issues is because the modern world doesn't give our prehistoric bodies the mental and physical inputs we evolved to need. He now tries to lure people into including simple but effective caveman activities into their lives to give them back their ancestral strength. His background in medicinal chemistry gives him unique insight into the workings of our bodies, leading to his “Go Wild – Get Healthy” mantra.Find out more about Merriwether and his Medicine Man Plant co:https://www.medicinemanplantco.com Facebook: @medicinemanplantcoInstagram: @mmplantco

Welcome to Saturday Morning Coffee for April 30, 2022!On this week's show, Reese and Glenn discuss the recent purchase of Twitter by billionaire Elon Musk, and how it has brought the Left and the Twitter-sphere to near-meltdown status.  We also discuss the announcement this week of the formation of of a "Disinformation Governance Board" within the Dept. of Homeland Security, and what a disastrously bad (and dangerous) idea this is.Sen Josh Kimbrell (R-Spartanburg), member of the S.C. Senate, also joins us on the program to discuss our efforts to pass election integrity reform legislation, and the current status of that bill in the S.C. Senate.  Sen. Kimbrell also discusses his efforts to remove certain items from the Senate's version of the State budget, including funding for a gender reassignment clinic at MUSC.  We're also joined on the show by Tyson Langhofer, Esq., an attorney who leads the Center for Academic Freedom at the Alliance Defending Freedom, who joins us to discuss the recent victory announced by the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in the case in which Langhofer and the ADF Team represented Prof. Nick Merriwether in his legal case with his employer, Shawnee State University (Ohio).  The University had previously required Prof. Merriwether to use pronouns at the request of one of his students, that were not the student's biological pronouns.  When Prof. Merriwether refused to comply, this case ensued.  The opinion from the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals confirms the argument made by ADF, that the Government cannot compel a college professor (or anyone else) to say or state something that that individual knows to be untrue.  The Merriwether decision is an important victory for religious and academic freedom, and an important victory for individual liberty, whether one agrees with Dr. Merriwether's perspective on the issues or not.For more information, or to support the important work of the Alliance Defending Freedom, go to: ADFlegal.orgThanks for listening to Saturday Morning Coffee!Proverbs 3:5-6

Happy Humpday Friends! As always bringing you great guests, living their lives authentically and on their own terms. My next guest is the ultimate caveman. He has created and started a supplement company and is open & honest about his journey. As a big believer in supplementation, I am excited to introduce you to Mark "Merriweather" Vorderbruggen. Mark “Merriwether” Vorderbruggen, Ph.D. chemist's path to becoming a medicine man was long but not unexpected. He always knew three things: 1. He loved nature. 2. He loved science. 3. He loved taking care of people.#1 & #3 came from his parents, both who taught he and his two brothers the ways of nature and how it can heal people physical, emotionally, and spiritually. His love of science led him to getting a M.S. in medicinal chemistry and a Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry with the plan to go into the pharmaceutical industry, but his expertise in the chemistries of nature led him into a different path. For 20 years he applied his talents to novel, natural chemical ways of protecting and healing Mother Earth and those who live upon her, leading to 15 patents, ranging from using cinnamon as a corrosion inhibitor to preventing silicosis from sand dust by coating it with a self-assembling oyster shell mimic. At the same time, he developed an international reputation as an expert in edible and medicinal wild plants, spending his evenings and weekends reconnecting people to the natural resources their ancestors used to survive. It was during this time he was given the nickname “Merriwether” after the Meriwether of Lewis & Clark fame – a scientist sent into the wild to bring back knowledge of its beneficial flora. This role led to the writing of Idiot's Guide Foraging and the soon to be released Outdoor Adventure Guide Foraging books, along with a monthly wild food article for the fashion/lifestyle magazine CHARM. He's also appeared on numerous TV shows, radio, and podcasts to preach the benefits of cavemanosity – how acting like a caveman is necessary to remain healthy in our modern world.More recently, he became the formulator for Medicine Man Plant Co., finally bringing forth at a greater level, his ability to help people with the power of plants and mushrooms. As both an herbalist and a chemist, Merriwether examines both traditions and scientific research to find and develop new formulations of ancient plants for modern issues. For more than 83,000 generations those gifts of nature repaired, protected, and sustained us.
