Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Since the early Eighties Martin Bisi has run Brooklyn's legendary BC Studio where he has worked on albums with the likes of Sonic Youth, Iggy Pop, Swans, William Burroughs, Helmet, Jim Thirlwell (Foetus) and even Afrika Bambaata. BC Studio was originally founded in 1979 under the name OAO Studio. Initially Martin was working alongside Bill Laswell and Brian Eno, but by 1983 they had left the partnership and the studio was renamed. Since then, Martin has continued to work with a wide array of artists and styles, from No Wave through to Hip Hop.
Conan Neutron's Protonic Reversal
Martin Bisi has owned BC Studios since 1980 when he started it with Brian Eno and Bill Laswell and has been witness to it's growth from gritty avante-garde hub of the No-Wave scene in which he was foundational, working with Lydia Lunch, Swans, Foetus and Sonic Youth into a largely gentrified but still arts-centric village. He's a pioneer for his work with early hip hop artists like Afrika Bambaataa and his solo work is as ambitious and free as his no-rules production style with a large catalog under his wings. His newest work is with the band NEONNOONE and is on par with his finest releases. An inspiring and unquenchable talent.
Martin Bisi in conversation - B.C Studio - in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1981, he started B.C. Studio (initially named OAO, Operation All Out, Studio) with Bill Laswell and Brian Eno in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn, where he recorded much of the No Wave, avant garde, and hip-hop of the early 1980s including Lydia Lunch, Live Skull, Fred Frith and Afrika Bambaataa. In 1982 he recorded the instruments for the first song Whitney Houston recorded as a lead singer, "Memories" off of Material's One Down LP. Soon after recording Herbie Hancock's "Rockit", Bisi split from Bill Laswell but continued working from BC Studio till present time, with a specialty in loud, dense sound, such as Foetus and Serena Maneesh. In 2021, he worked with the Hypnagogia album of Travis Duo.
Sound and Chaos: The Story of BC Studio is a documentary about Martin Bisi and the iconic recording studio that he runs in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY. The film was released in 2014 and was directed by Ryan Douglas and Sara Leavitt. Ryan and Sara met while working for a promo company in New York and decided to strike out on their own to make a documentary film. They join Billy via Zoom from opposite ends of the country to talk about their experiences making the documentary as well as their takes on the current climate in filmmaking and distribution. They also find time to talk about cartoons and politics.
BC Studio was established in 1981 with funding from Brian Eno where he recorded some of Ambient 4: On Land. Martin Bisi was there from the beginning. Along with Bill Laswell and the band Material, Bisi recorded Herbie Hancock's hit "Rockit." Throughout the years Bisi has worked with a number of notable musicians, recording some of their most memorable and groundbreaking work: Sonic Youth, Swans, John Zorn, Foetus, Afrika Bambaattaa, Dresden Dolls all have worked with Martin in his studio in the Gowanus neighborhood in Brooklyn. Martin speaks to Billy via Zoom about the studio, his take on creativity, his album ex Nihilo (and the significance of the phrase to him,) Voice of Gowanus and their fight for a just and sustainable neighborhood. Dominic Cipolla resides in New York, but part of him will always consider Louisville his home. Before his exodus, he helped shape Louisville's independent music sound, playing in Starkiller & Sapat, and founding the ever-evolving Phantom Family Halo. Once in New York, he re-established PFH, and began to work with artists like Martin Bisi and Torres. A highly sought after drummer, he recently reconnected with Louisville pals WATTER to join them on their newest record and tour, and was just invited to hit the skins for Japanese instrumental giants Mono. Oh, and he loves Can. He sat down with JC to talk about some legendary Louisville shows, recording with Tascam 388's, his creative process, and...Can. This episode is sponsored by Karate Body Records, Heine Bros. Coffee, and Dauntless Distributing.

From MorriconeYouth.com: Morricone Youth formed in New York City in 1999 with the mission statement of composing, re-interpreting, performing and recording only "music written for the moving image." With a repertoire of over 100 reinterpretations of film and television soundtracks and music production library recordings (many of which recorded for CDs released by Country Club Records),the band performs with projections thematically dedicated to specific composers or film music genres in addition to composing and performing its own original live scores to old silent films, midnight movies, animations and shorts in theaters and art spaces around the country. In 2005, Morricone Youth composed original music for its own imaginary film entitled "SILENZIO VIOLENTO," recorded with legendary Brooklyn producer and engineer Martin Bisi released by Country Club Records. The band's original music has regularly been used for television and films, including the documentary "Second Skin" directed by Juan Carlos Pineiro-Escoriaza about MMORPGs. The band has embarked on the ambitious project of recording and releasing a 15-vinyl/digital series of the enormous body of work it has composed and re-worked for the 15 silent films and midnight movies and performed over the past six years around NYC. The first three releases of the series are now available digitally and on vinyl: (1) "THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED" 6-song 32-minute EP (150g black vinyl, limited pressing of 500 w/ digital download cards); (2) "NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD" 6-song 25-minute EP (second pressing on 150g transparent blood red swirl vinyl limited pressing of 500 w/ digital download cards); and (3) "MAD MAX" 10-song 40 minute LP on coke bottle green OR gold black swirl 150g vinyl, limited pressing of 500 each w/ digital download cards). Up next: F.W. Murnau's "SUNRISE: A SONG OF TWO HUMANS" (est. April 2017); Alfred Hitchcock's "THE LODGER" (est. August 2017); and Sergei Eisentein's "BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN" (est. November 2017).
