The 2006 UConn men's basketball team was one of the most dominant in program history. Two years removed from a national title and loaded with NBA prospects, the Huskies spent the entire season ranked inside the top five and essentially dominated every team they played throughout the regular season. The only blemishes were a freak road loss to Marquette and a disappointing setback at Villanova, which also boasted a loaded top five team and was considered a national championship contender. Two weeks after that loss, which knocked UConn from its perch as the No. 1 team in the country, Villanova came to Gampel Pavilion for the rematch, and folks, it was epic. The battle between the Big East's top teams more than lived up to the hype, and in today's episode Matt McDonough and I break down what remains one of the biggest regular season wins in program history. We also cover some of the history of the UConn-Villanova rivalry, which should be picking up steam again moving forward with the Wildcats now reigning as the top program in the new Big East. Matt McDonough returns to break down one of the pivotal games of the 2011 UConn men's basketball team's national championship run, the Elite Eight showdown with Arizona. Having taken similar journeys to reach the Elite Eight, UConn and Arizona traded haymakers all game long, each riding big runs back and forth before Arizona finished the game with a shot to tie or win the game at the buzzer. Jamelle Horne got a great look from three to win at the buzzer, but the shot rimmed out and UConn survived to advance back to the Final Four. Like what you hear? Want to offer feedback? Matt McDonough returns to help break down UConn's 2011 Sweet 16 win against Kawhi Leonard's San Diego State team, a game that has aged better than probably any other played in college basketball that season. Featuring two of the top NBA players in that year's draft, Kemba Walker enjoyed arguably the finest performance of his career, scoring 36 points to help overcome Leonard and a raucous pro-San Diego State crowd to send the Huskies through to the Elite Eight. Besides the game, Matt and I break down the big picture implications of this matchup and the Duke vs. Arizona Sweet 16 game that immediately followed. We also share the story of our mad dash across the country to make it in time for the game, as well as Matt's encounter with Kyrie Irving's dad later that night. Like what you hear? In the inaugural episode of Yes UConn, I catch up with my old Daily Campus partner in crime Matt McDonough about the greatest UConn game we ever watched in person, the 2011 Big East Tournament quarterfinal against Pitt. This is the game where Kemba Walker became a legend, breaking Pitt center Gary McGhee to the floor with a killer step back move to knock down the game-winning shot at the buzzer. UConn would go on to win the Big East Tournament and eventually ride the momentum all the way to the 2011 NCAA Championship, claiming the third national title in program history. Matt and I discuss our memories of the game and what it was like to cover it for The Daily Campus before going in deep on how the game played out, what stood out upon rewatch and who did and didn't play as well as you may remember. A couple more quick things: GROWING PAINS: This being the first episode, I'm still working out the kinks with my recording setup. For this one my primary recording turned out unusable, so I had to resort to my emergency back-up on my phone. The audio quality is basically ok, but every time I shift in my chair or pick up the phone to look something up, you can tell, which is annoying but bear with me for this one. I've already figured out what went wrong and future episodes should come through nice and clear. CORRECTION: At one point in the episode I tried to make a reference to Amidah Brimah's offensive rebound and put-back basket against St. Joseph's in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, only I mixed up my Philadelphia schools and said Temple instead. Sorry about that. Like what you hear? Want to offer feedback? Feel free to reach out at yesuconnpodcast@gmail.com. Matt McDonough answers questions that will help strengthen your fleet risk management program. What is the biggest misconception when it comes to fleet safety programs? Both employers and employees tend to think of them as a way to protect their vehicles, but that's just one part of the equation. Auto accident scenarios in which there is damage to more than one auto and injuries to multiple people are not uncommon. And accidents that cause injuries to employees and civilians can cause a public relations hit, as well. Why should employees focus on fleet safety in particular? Loss runs including slips and falls, struck-by incidents, and scrapes and sprains usually outnumber automobile incidents. But motor vehicle incidents tend to show up more on the severity side of losses. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that roadway incidents were the number-one cause of workplace fatalities in 2013. In fact, roadway incidents have been the number-one cause of workplace fatality since 1992, when the BLS started keeping track of this data.
Terry Brands labeled him "The Toughest 125lber in the Country" and not in those exact words. After a few months Matt McDonough believed it himself and set out to prove it to the rest of the college wrestling world. Two NCAA Championships and three finals appearances later, we were believers. Matt talks to Sudden History about his mentality, the mentality of competing for Iowa and the allure of the Hawkeye wrestling program. He also addresses how it feels to be the guy "on the other side of the Cinderella Story". Among other topics discussed are the delicate subject of his two teammates competing for an Olympic spot this Spring.
