If she is out, how will Iowa fill that void? Who can step in and who needs to step up? Then we look at Iowa's road in the Big Ten Tournament, which will get underway for the Hawkeyes on Friday late afternoon. Then we move over to the Iowa men, who picked up a huge road win on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern. We look at how the Hawkeyes were able to hold off the Wildcats down the stretch and the strong development of Josh Dix as a scorer in the last couple of weeks and how that has helped Iowa in their recent run. We also talk about the three key possessions down the stretch for Iowa in the victory. Finally we wrap up looking at what it will take for the Hawkeyes to get off the bubble and firmly into the NCAA Tournament once again this year. One of this week's opponent in basketball is Iowa State, so Brion summarized the games played from 1910 through 1935. Iowa is 48-28 (63% win) all-time. Fran McCaffery is 6-7 (46%) all-time vs the Cyclones. For comparison, Tom Davis was 8-5 (61.5%) all-time. The first game wasn't played until 1910. They played frequently (sometimes twice a year) through 1921, then restarted in 1933. They played again in 1935, then took a 35-year gap between games. They restarted the series in 1970, and have played almost every year since then. Iowa won the first 12 games, then Iowa State won in 1917, but Iowa won 7 more straight. The series became more competitive after the initial Iowa dominance. No team had won more than 3 straight except for Lute Olson winning 5 straight from 1978-1983. He also discussed the different venues where they played in Iowa City and Ames. Iowa State played at Margaret Hall Gymnasium from 1907-1913, State gymnasium from 1913-1946, the Iowa State Armory from 1946 to 1971, then Hilton Coliseum starting in December 1971. Iowa played in the Old Armory (Armory #1) from 1905 to 1922, where the current Communications Building resides near the Old Capitol. They moved to another Armory (#2) from 1922 to 1926 while the Field House was being built. It was located just west of the Field House in the current UI Hospital near Kinnick Stadium. They moved into the Field House in 1927 and stayed until Jan 1983 when Carver-Hawkeye Arena opened. Adam Haluska started his basketball career at Iowa State before transferring to play at Iowa for his final 3 seasons. He earned 1st Team All-Big Ten in 2007, and was an academic All-American. He was drafted in the 2nd round by the Charlotte Hornets in 2007. Dan Gable needs no introduction. He was a national champion wrestler at Iowa State, and won a gold medal in the 1972 Olympics. He took over as head coach at Iowa in 1976, and won 15 national titles and 21 Big Ten Champions before retiring in 1997. It's SHORT TIME SHOTS … a quick look at the day's top wrestling stories. Here's the good stuff for Tuesday, October 17.-Dylan Morrison of the MorWrestling podcast has a pair of guests on from Tarleton State to discuss what is currently happening with the future of Texas wrestling and what exactly is factual about the school's look to start a Division I wrestling program. New assistant coach Jimmy Overhiser also makes his first public appearance as part of the budding Tarleton State program. Check out that excellent interview wherever podcasts are found by searching out M O R Wrestling.-The University of Mount Union has announced the addition of a women's wrestling team to its athletic program, with competition set to begin in the fall of 2024. This move comes as women's wrestling experiences rapid growth at both the high school and collegiate levels, and it will make Mount Union the fourth Ohio Athletic Conference school to offer the sport.-Over on Rokfin, Willie Saylor of MatScouts has the first two previews out about the upcoming monstrosity of high school wrestling that is the Super 32 Challenge. Willie previews the weights through 144 pounds, with more coming on his channel. The girls pre-seeds for the event were also released, you can give those a look over at FloWrestling.-Also on Rokfin at the Missouri Wrestling channel, Cody Thorn breaks down the journey of Joshua Quiorz, the California native who is still searching for his next move after Division II William Jewell announced it was going to QUOTE “pause” the wrestling program after this year. School officials refused to answer our queries when the information came out last month, but still moved forward with shelving the program indefinitely, leaving the wrestlers who had already paid for their fall semester in a lurch. Missouri Wrestling has done a real good job covering this story. Give it a read. -Iowa's much-anticipated women's wrestling schedule was released on Monday, highlighted by two home events at Carver Hawkeye Arena and participation at the Soldier Salute just down the road at Xtream Arena. While Iowa women will celebrate its first year of wrestling, the University of Northern Iowa's men's program released its schedule for its 100th collegiate season. Campbell also announced its schedule, as did Division II Fairmont State. -On Wrestling Changed My Life, Ryan Warner talks with Jim Gibbons about his project, The Dual, which is being screened around the midwest. A multi-part series, this is going to be something you want to check out.-United World Wrestling President Nenad Lalovic conveyed that the suspension imposed on the Wrestling Federation of India will be lifted as soon as the federation conducts free and fair elections. The global body has not set any deadline for this, but emphasized that the suspension will remain in place until such elections are held and a democratically elected managing committee is installed. Lalovic further noted that the lifting of the suspension is contingent on the elections being held democratically and without any complaints from stakeholders. The suspension came as a result of WFI's failure to conduct the necessary elections, a situation that has seen the federation embroiled in controversies, leading to significant postponements of the elections.-There is some positive news coming out of India though. Antim Panghal, the young wrestling sensation from India, has made waves in the wrestling community. With multiple accolades including two Junior World Wrestling championships, and a recent silver at the Asian Championships 2023, Panghal's rivalry with seasoned wrestler Vinesh Phogat and her journey to secure an Olympic quota for India in Paris 2024, exemplify her rising stature in the sport. The Lopers had a future world and Olympic medalist, Tervel Dlagnev, and a future UFC Champ, Kamarudeen Usman, as key cogs in that title run. The Lopers edged Minnesota State by half a point in 2008, and of course, there's so much that went into that title.-From Inside The Games, The Iran Wrestling Federation says it plans to appeal after the country's Greco-Roman wrestler Mohammadali Geraei was suspended following a bottle-throwing incident during this year's World Championships.
