Is it possible to eat well, most of the time, and get slimmer and healthier as you do it? With The Fast Diet it is. Dr Mosley's Fast Diet has become the health phenomenon of our times. And for good reason. This radical approach to weight loss really is as simple as it sounds. You eat normally for five days a week, then for just two days you cut your calorie intake (600 for men, 500 for women). In this fully revised edition, Michael Mosley introduces the science behind the diet, with exciting new research into the wider health benefits of intermittent fasting including studies on asthma, eczema and diabetes. Mimi Spencer, award-winning food and fashion writer, then explains how to incorporate fasting into your daily life, with a wealth of new detail on the psychology of successful dieting. She presents a range of enticing new recipes, along with an easy Fast Diet shopping list and a user-friendly calorie counter to help you sail through your Fast Days. Whether you're a committed faster or a new recruit to the Fast Diet, this revised edition is a must.
Graham Phillips Graham Phillips BPharm FRPharmS is a second generation community pharmacist. He describes himself as "The Pharmacist who Gave Up Drugs!" Having played a very senior leadership role in the pharmacy profession he became disillusioned with the NHS one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare with its emphasis on waiting for symptoms to arise before treating (suppressing?) them with drugs. He pioneered a new approach using his scientific knowledge, clinical expertise and new technology which resulted in the ProLongevity service. The ProLongevity programme helps people who want to lose weight, improve wellbeing and avoid/reverse diabetes, by using new technology to monitor real-time blood sugar levels. We provide personalised advice based on your data to help you make changes to your diet and lifestyle. We avoid traditional approaches that treat symptoms after the damage has been done. Prevention is better than cure. Graham has two sons, one is also a pharmacist and the other a corporate lawyer. He lives with his partner, Karen (a GP also passionate about lifestyle medicine) in North London. Like Jackie, Graham is also an ambassador for the Public Health Collaboration. He believes that the world has become dominated by Big Food on the one hand (makes you sick) and Big Pharma on the other (makes you 10% better). In the end science must prevail. Food and health writer, Sam Rice joins Dr Louise Newson in this episode to discuss eating well in midlife. Sam tells of her unconventional route into nutrition and wellness, and how living in Bali inspired her to write the Midlife Kitchen with her good friend and best-selling author Mimi Spencer. After the success of the Midlife Kitchen, Sam has recently published her follow up book, The Midlife Method, which supports women who have made the transition to healthier eating but struggle to shift the weight they would like to lose. She urges us to turn away from toxic diet cultures and worrying about our dress size, and focus more on our microbiomes, and having a healthy, happy gut. Sam’s three top tips are: Think about the balance of food you’re eating, you don’t need to cut out whole groups of food, just focus on your complex carbs, lean proteins and healthy fats. In your regular exercise routines, don’t forget to include strength training with weights and resistance, as well as your cardio activities like walking or Zumba. Embrace eating with awareness. Give yourself permission to eat well and allow yourself to enjoy food. Welcome to the #SPAITGIRL Talk Show with Yvette Le Blowitz EP.95 - The Midlife Method with Sam Rice, Best Selling Author How to Lose Weight and Feel Great After 40 Sam Rice is a freelance food, drink and health writer and a member of the Guild of Food Writers. She is best know for co-authoring the Sunday Times bestseller The Midlife Kitchen with award-winning journalist and co-author of The Fast Diet, Mimi Spencer. Sam currently lives in Singapore with her husband and two children and has a regular monthly column for Top Sante magazine. In Sam's brand new book - The Midlife Method, she explores why it is so much harder to lose weight as we get older and what we can do about it. Rather than focusing exclusively on restricted eating, as so many diets do, Sam guides us through her 'method' for midlife weight loss based on extensive research into the specific physiological changes that occur in our middle years. She answers the questions that she herself asked when, in her forties the weight suddenly started accumulating around the middle: Why is this happening to me? Wha am I eating that isn't helping? What foods should I be eating more of? How do calories fit into the equation? How much and what kinds of exercise are most beneficial? What other lifestyle changes do I need to make? In her book - The Midlife Method, Sam includes more than 80 delicious recipes for breakfast, lunch and family-friendly dinners, along with an easy 4-week plan. The Midlife Method shows how combining Light Days (active calorie restriction via calorie-controlled recipes) and Regular Days (focused on eating well-balanced, nutrient-dense food) can bring about healthy and sustainable weight loss. But Sam shares how we don't want to lose weight as we get older, we want to feel great too, that is where The Midlife Method Healthy Habits come in. Learn How to exercise optimally, get a better night's sleep, manage stress and enjoy alcohol as part of a healthier lifestyle. Dr Chris Barclay was brought up in Ipswich. He qualified as a doctor at Sheffield University in 1978 (the very same year he got married and Ipswich won the FA Cup - a rather good year). He worked for two years in Sierra Leone before before returning to Sheffield to starting speciality training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He swapped over to General Practice in 1989.Chris Barclay is currently a GP and medical writer. His special interest in diet and health began with a chance encounter; a patient told him how he had lost weight by cutting out carbohydrate foods. Chris has researched the subject ever since. He was principal investigator for the ISAIAH-Project, a diet trial in pre-diabetic patients. His conclusion: processed carbs, starchy foods and sugar are the problem; they are driving our Diabesity epidemic. In his book, Beating Diabetes the low-carb way, Chris presents compelling and persuasive evidence and translated it into a practical and effective plan. Chris has written regularly for medical magazines, most recently The Practitioner magazine. He is the lead writer for MaPPs, a drug information website to help health care organisations (Hospital Trusts mainly) provide reliable, easy to read information on medicines that can be printed off for patients to take away (again, translational work). He worked for many years as GP in Sheffield before moving back to Suffolk. He has worked most recently as a GP in Aldeburgh,His new book Beating Diabetes the low-carb way collects the fruits of his research and enquiries in one place. This is the second part of our interview with Dr Chris Barclay. We start by touching on fruit and how the daily recommendation from the ‘Eat Well' plate of ‘five a day' came about. We think of fruit as healthy but fruit has been genetically modified to be sweeter than it was before. If we are going to eat fruit - the best way to eat them. If you are confused about which vegetables are lower in carbohydrates, check out the Diet Doctor: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/vegetables The Diet Doctor has low carb fruits listed here: https://www.dietdoctor.com/low-carb/fruits We discuss the possibility of giving nutrition advice in the UK.Dr Chris' BookBeating Diabetes The Low Carb Way - Dr Chris Barclayhttps://amzn.to/2SR22EuResources MentionedLife without bread: How a Low Carbohydrate Diet Can Save your life by Christian B Allan and Dr Wolfgang Lutzhttps://amzn.to/2HcpnONGood Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes https://amzn.to/37fPKhpDr Zoe Harcombe PhDhttps://www.zoeharcombe.com/ The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz https://amzn.to/3k9t4TsThe Pioppi Diet by Dr Aseem Malhotrahttps://amzn.to/3j87dL0The Fast Diet by Dr Michael Mosley and Mimi Spencer (5-2) diethttps://amzn.to/37aYKV4Robert Lustig video Sugar: The Bitter Truth https://robertlustig.com/sugar-the-bitter-truth/ Public Health Collaboration UK https://
Weigh In On March 31st, I weight 225.8 Today on 4/8 I weight 225.3 How Did Jimmy Kimmel Lose Weight? According to an article in Men's Journal He had gone years without weighing himself and when he finally did, he had come a long way from the skinny days as a teenager. He says, "I decided I was going to have two protein shakes and a very small dinner every day. I did that for eight weeks, then I switched to a strict 2,000-calorie-a-day diet. I lost 25 pounds that way. Then, for a while, I'd eat a piece of salmon daily for lunch. Now the idea of eating salmon is revolting to me. My new thing — something I've been doing for a couple of years now, actually — is starving myself two days a week. People call it the 5:2 diet, but I've been doing it since before it had a name. On Monday and Thursday, I eat fewer than 500 calories a day, then I eat like a pig for the other five days. You "surprise" the body, keep it guessing. The 5:2 Diet According to the Daily Burn, the 5:2 Diet was invented by Michael Mosley (author of the Fast Diet and The 8-week Blood Sugar Diet). and Mimi Spencer. The idea is when you’re eating far fewer calories than normal, your metabolic rate actually speeds up and your body also gets on with essential repairs. It’s a bit like doing a spring cleaning,” says Mosley. “Instead of having to spend time and energy digesting your food, your body works on repairing itself instead,” he adds. Not to mention, you’re cutting a total of 3,000 calories per week, which is significant enough to help people slim down. Mosely recommends following a Mediterranean-style diet containing fruits, vegetables, oily fish (like salmon), nuts, olive oil, yogurt, cheese, and even the occasional glass of wine. What about Starvation mode? According to Mosely, your body only goes into starvation mode if you've deprived it for weeks. Danny Elfman Masterclass Danny Elfman has composed music for a TON of SUPER SUCCESSFUL movies, and yet he still doubts himself. He mentions in a preview of his masterclass (where he teaches composing) that he still doubts himself, and that to grow you need to fail and learn from your mistakes. In this episode we go through a detailed overview of how to 5:2Who can fast Over committing !! The nitty gritty of the diet Monitoring Who can fast ? Fasting diets are not recommended for the following:-People who are underweight or have an eating disorder Children (under 18 years old) Type 1 diabetics and diabetics taking medication for their diabetes (other than Metformin) Pregnant women or breast feeding mothers People recovering from surgery Those who are frail or have a significant underlying medical condition should speak to their doctor first, as they would before embarking on any weight-loss regime. Those who are not sure about whether it may affect their prescribed medications should to speak to their doctor first. People feeling unwell or have a fever Those taking Warfarin should consult their doctor first as it may increase their INR. People with a history of serious mental health problems. Don't Over CommitConcentrate on the basics When I started the 5:2 diet I committed to fasting twice a week and watching my calories on the other days The Calorie Bit Again. The week is divided into two sections:-5 days of the week you eat 2000 calories for females or 2500 calories for males 2 days a week you eat 500 calories for females or 600 calories for males How many days to fast ?Initially I would stick with 2 days of fasting and 5 days of non-fasting I would pick the same days in the week to fast When to have your meals on a fast dayIdeally you want to get three twelve hour periods where you are not eating food. Plan your meals in advanceAt the very least plan out your fasting meals each week Should my meals be super healthy ?Ideally you should try and be as healthy as you can be but don't give yourself another reason to fail What to drink ?If you can you are best to stick to water Breaking a fastI would strongly encourage you to follow through on a fast day and not break a fast. If you do it once for the wrong reason it is going to set you up to fail. Is it hard ?Initially it does seem to be hard Like any habit it does take 2 or 3 weeks to make it feel normal Preventing TemptationRemember one of the main mantra's you can always have it tomorrow. Thanks very much Mimi Spencer (co-author) of the Fast Diet Basic MonitoringWeight yourself once a week Take body measurements. (I wish I had) Monitor your calories each day. I would use an app to do this. See advanced monitoring. Advanced MonitoringGet a fitness tracker and scales to help you Go to https://www.tdpod.com/Resources (https://www.tdpod.com/Resources) for more details.
Tip 1 - Drink lots of waterThe rationale behind more water is that you normally receive a lot of this through the food that you eat which you are not eating because you are fasting Think about how you drink your water and your motivation Chilly's water bottles are a good motivator made from stainless steel, with great designs and great feel. Go to the resources section to see more https://www.tdpod.com/Resources (https://www.tdpod.com/Resources) I find water makes you less hungry Tip 2 - Don't Over CommitThink about fasting in the short term initially. Concentrate on getting through your two fast days every week Stick to your calories allocated each day and eat what feels comfortable. Tip 3 - Busy, Busy, BusyTry not to fast on a day where you are not busy Try to keep busy by doing those tasks you keep putting off or that no one wants to do. Who knew that not only do you get the chance to lose weight and gain many health benefits that you can also get recognised at home or work for going the extra mile !!! Tip 4 - Track your progressionIt is really important to monitor your progress Weigh yourself and measure your waist each week Tip 5 - Understand your triggersThink about what makes you hungry This could be smells or association such as a bakery you walk past each day Work out what triggers you and how to avoid it Tip 6 - Tea / Coffee and other hot drinksTea and coffee is good without milk and you can have as many as you like Camelia's Tea House is located at https://www.camelliasteahouse.com/ (https://www.camelliasteahouse.com) South Lodge Hotel is located at https://www.exclusive.co.uk/south-lodge (https://www.exclusive.co.uk/south-lodge) Tip 7 - Quieten your mind / give yourself permission to relaxDifferent people relax in different ways Find your way but try to make sure that you don't associate food with it Amy Landino https://amylandino.com/why-i-write-every-morning/ (https://amylandino.com/why-i-write-every-morning/) Tip 8 - Find a fasting buddy or community !!!Get a fasting buddy Fast 5:2 Community https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/ (https://thefastdiet.co.uk/forums/) Tip 9 - Reward yourself / take stockReward yourself for a short term goal that is 2 or 3 weeks away Take stock and look back at what you have achieved on a regular basis Tip 10 - You Can Eat It TomorrowThank you Mimi Spencer - co-author of the The Fasting 5:2 Diet for this top tip. I can't tell you how many times I have come close to breaking the fast and I just think about this and everything is ok
