Is PECS out as an AAC tool for autistic kids? Today, we're diving into a hot topic in the world of autism and communication: the Picture Exchange Communication System, or PECS. Over the years, PECS has been widely used as a way for autistic children to communicate, but as new research and insights have emerged, there's been a lot of conversation—some of it controversial—around its effectiveness and limitations. In this episode, I'm thrilled to be joined by two speech-language pathologists, Paulina Elias, and Amanda Blackwell, from Natural Communication, who share their invaluable expertise on PECS and the bigger picture of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) for autistic children. We explore how PECS started, what it offers, and why more and more professionals are moving toward more flexible, child-led communication methods that honor autonomy and individuality. You'll hear us discuss everything from the importance of giving kids the freedom to say ‘no' to strategies that empower communication beyond requests. Plus, we talk about the pitfalls of hand-over-hand prompting and the emerging preference for tools that grow with a child's communication needs. If you're an educator, parent, or anyone working with autistic children, this episode will give you new perspectives on PECS, AAC, and the role of true connection in supporting autistic communication. Get ready for a thought-provoking discussion that might change the way you think about communication support! Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Tu4rKeAM0dc Bios:  Paulina Elias, M.Cl.Sc., SLP Reg. CASLPO Paulina is a multilingual speech language pathologist (SLP) living in Canada. Although she works with people of different ages and communicative needs, she has a special interest in the areas of multilingualism, gestalt language development, and autism. Paulina enjoys collaborating directly with families and interdisciplinary teams in each person's native language. At this time, Paulina offers international consults virtually, and evaluation and intervention services in Ontario, Canada. She regularly presents internationally on the topics of multilingualism, gestalt language development, and AAC. Dr. Amanda Blackwell, EdD, SLPD, CCC-SLP Dr. Amanda is passionate about communication in all forms. She has had the opportunity to learn from a variety of people from diverse cultural backgrounds as she has lived and worked full time as a bilingual (English/Spanish) SLP in Guatemala since 2013. Dr. Blackwell teaches postgraduate courses in autism and AAC at Minot State University and Saint Mary's College, and mentors SLPD students in their capstone research projects through the MGH Institute of Health Professions and Rocky Mountain University. She loves to travel around the world (with recent trips to Spain, Argentina, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Honduras, and Sri Lanka) to collaborate with professionals in presentations, workshops, research, and autism identification (ADOS-2). Topics Covered: Podcast features Paulina and Amanda from Natural Communication discussing updates in PECS and AAC. Paulina is a multilingual speech-language pathologist from Guatemala; Amanda is a U.S. speech-language pathologist with 11 years in Guatemala, focusing on autism and AAC. Both advocate for accessible information in multiple languages, especially Spanish, and are expanding to French and Portuguese. PECS, created in 1985, is a structured communication system based on ABA principles, mainly for requests. Criticism of PECS includes its rigidity and lack of fostering true communication skills beyond requests. Hand-over-hand prompting is discouraged due to autonomy concerns; hand-under-hand is recommended for better control. Communication books should enable autonomous communication, including the ability to protest or reject. Building relationships and trust with clients is essential for effective communication and learning. The podcast calls for a shift from traditional methods like PECS to more flexible, multimodal communication strategies. Natural Communication provides resources in English and Spanish, including a crash course on Gestalt language development, and engages in research and workshops to enhance AAC practices. It showed how his use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) had progressed over time, offering a message of hope for others in similar situations.Eileen talks openly about how tough it can be to share your family's journey online. Her story started when Charlie began showing signs of autism at 18 months. What began as updates on her personal Facebook for friends and family soon grew into the platform she has today, with a large following across social media.Among her involvement in the field, Eileen is also an author. Her first book, All Across the Spectrum, is an autobiography that explores her experience being diagnosed with autism after her son. It highlights the differences in severity and what it's like to parent a child on the spectrum while being on the spectrum herself. Her second book, Be the One, is a collection of prose poetry about overcoming life's challenges. Eileen's third book, And Yet Here You Are, is coming out soon. For parents raising children with autism, Eileen has some advice: Be mindful of social media. Get .1 ASHA CEU hereEpisode SummaryEver feel under-equipped to deal with the counseling demands that often pop up in your daily SLP work? You're not alone! So much of what we do as SLP's is “grief work” and many of us find ourselves in over our heads at times with the counseling needs of our clients or students and their families. This week, Kate and Amy capitalize on their “forced friendship” with Beverly Montgomery of Lex Communicate to talk about the power of alliances with mental health professionals in addressing the holistic needs of individuals with communication differences and the caregivers who support them. Beverly discusses how mental health needs touch each case we serve and offers actionable suggestions for how Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP) can help us go beyond due diligence and realize better outcomes for those we serve. Tune in to explore which mental health professionals may be unexpected allies and obtain some simple strategies to help you manage these powerful relationships when scopes of practice overlap. Our clients and students are so complex, you may often feel that you “have a flashlight when you need a flood light” to recognize all of the facets that compose client and family needs. Beverly's approach to interdisciplinary practice Illuminates the complexities of your toughest cases. If you find “other stuff” getting in the way of therapeutic progress for your clients or students, this is the episode for you.Learning OutcomesState the purpose(s) and benefit(s) of interprofessional collaborationDefine Interprofessional Education (IPE) and Interprofessional Practice (IPP)Describe a decision-making process for when and how to make mental health referralsIdentify a variety of collaborative partners both within and outside their organizationReferencesAmerican Speech-Language-Hearing Association. My guest for this Glass Half Full podcast episode is Patrick Regan. Patrick is a young man living in Alaska with SMA (spinal muscle atrophy) who uses AAC to communicate. We've gotten to know each other through online BORP classes -- Tai Chi and Pilates.  Our communication previous to our Zoom podcast recording was through Zoom's chat. Patrick is not able to speak and uses technology to communicate via text or assisted speech. Our podcast recording was the first time I actually saw him live since he usually has a photo of himself in the Zoom window. And he varies the photos so I've seen him dressed up for different themes especially in the Rumba with Tina dance class.  Anyhow, Patrick has proven himself to be quite tech savvy and I wanted to learn more about the AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) he uses.

In this episode of the Autism Family Resource Podcast, host Brian Keene sits down with Lydia Mackay and Stacey Dover, speech-language pathologists from the Phenix area, to delve into the world of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). They discuss the importance of communication, language acquisition, and the various communication options, such as AAC devices. This is the first part of a three-part series to provide valuable insights and guidance for parents of non-speaking or special needs children. Guests: Lydia Mackay and Stacey Dover are speech-language pathologists based in the Phenix area. They specialize in working with individuals who use AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) in various settings, such as schools and homes. They have experience providing evaluations and training for augmentative communication devices and have worked extensively with non-speaking individuals and those with special needs. They are passionate about supporting communication development and empowering individuals to express themselves effectively. Main Topics Discussed: Defining communication and debunking the misconception that it is solely verbal. Exploring language acquisition and how it develops through babbling and word formation. Emphasizing the role of context and interaction in language learning. Introducing AAC as a tool for augmenting and supplementing communication. Highlighting the importance of engagement, feedback, and positive social interaction in language development. Considering sign language as a visual form of communication and its potential benefits. Addressing the question of when it's time for a child to get an AAC device. Stressing the importance of self-advocacy and providing individuals with the means to express themselves. Key Takeaways: Communication encompasses various modalities beyond verbal speech, including body language and literacy. Language acquisition begins with babbling and gradually shapes into meaningful words through positive reinforcement and social interaction. AAC serves as a tool to support and augment existing modes of communication. Engagement, context, and interaction are crucial in language learning and should be prioritized in the parent-child relationship. Sign language can be considered a form of communication, but the ability to hear oneself say words is important, which AAC devices can facilitate. The decision to introduce AAC should be based on individual needs and communication challenges. AAC devices empower individuals to self-advocate and express their needs effectively.  For AAC resources, FAQ, and flowcharts: https://www.pureheartstherapy.com/resources/speechandcommunication Subscribe Now & Leave a Review Apple Podcasts, Spotify,  Google Podcast, &  Stitcher Visit our Website www.pureheartstherapy.com Follow Us: Facebook: Pure Hearts Therapy Facebook Group: Autism Family Resource Instagram: Purehearts_Therapy

He has a verbal vocabulary of around 200 words, and a more limited AAC vocabulary. Her son went to a well-regarded ABA school, where they they used AAC to only teach only fringe words and as a backup to verbal speech when they couldn't understand him. His mother learned more about AAC implementation and moved him to a new school. Now, the new SLP wants her son to use a different vocabulary template (in his case, Crescendo for Proloquo2go) that better supports core language, and Anna wanted to know how best to transition her son from his old vocabulary template to his new one.    Key ideas this week:

Get .1 ASHA CEU hereEpisode SummaryHey SLP's! Don't be distracted by the shiny AAC penny! It's all about language therapy and you've got this! This week, we welcome back Dr. Cathy Binger and Dr. Jennifer Kent-Walsh to share their pearls of wisdom around using typical language development to guide AAC practice. Tune in to focus on “the big C in AAC” as Dr. Binger and Dr. Kent-Walsh urge us to focus on language rather than technology as we support complex communicators to achieve their full communicative potential and give them access to the building blocks of language that they deserve. You'll learn how to start off right with goals and objectives that hold language and communication at the center, you'll hear all about the importance of getting a good grasp on receptive language using a variety of tools, and you'll round out the hour learning how to use these starting points to develop a solid AAC intervention plan using what you already know about-pragmatics, semantics, and syntax. This is a passionate episode that emphasizes progress over perfection and acknowledges the messiness of learning language for all young communicators, not just those with complex needs.Learn more about Cathy Binger and Jennifer Kent-Walsh here.Course AccommodationsThe transcript for this course is provided below. Get .1 ASHA CEU hereEpisode SummaryWhat is harder (and even more rewarding, I might add) than supporting the communication development of tiny humans? Well, providing early intervention to tiny humans with complex communication needs, of course. Graduate training certainly doesn't prepare us for everything and most SLP's get minimal to no didactic or clinical exposure to early intervention OR supporting complex communicators, making this mash-up a true head scratcher for many of us. I had the pleasure of joining Kate and Amy this week to geek out on AAC and try my best to demystify some of the barriers that SLP's in the early intervention setting encounter when trying their darndest to serve complex communicators and their families. Tune in for some validation, some practical advice, and hopefully some reassurance as you navigate this complicated territory, given minimal resources across the board. We'll chat about coaching, teaming, and joy, and offer some myth-busting insights to help you stop chasing those “unicorns” that often result in delayed introduction of AAC tools and strategies to children under the age of three years. Guest: Adriana Capuano, M.A. CCC-SLP Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) is a communication system that is helpful for children who do not have functional communication. Often we think of this as being for only nonverbal children, but there are actually many different situations that AAC can be used in order to boost effective communication for children. Listen in on this episode of Helping Kids Thrive as Nicole talks with speech language pathologist, Adriana Capuano, about the basics of AAC - what it is, how a team decides what kind of AAC is needed, and how it is used in a school and home setting. She talks at length about best practices for teaching a child to use an AAC system and how we as parents can encourage our children and advocate for them within school and social settings.
