What might surprise you about the impact of alcohol on heart disease? How can wine drinkers reduce the risk of certain cancers with one supplement? Does wine help protect against cognitive decline and dementia? Why do some organizations make extreme recommendations for eliminating alcohol? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with author Tony Edwards. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Three of you will win a copy of his terrific new book, The Very Good News About Wine. To qualify, all you have to do is email me at natalie@nataliemaclean.com and let me know that you've posted a review of the podcast. I'll choose three people randomly from those who contact me. Good luck!   Highlights What positive health effects were found in Harvard's long-term research on alcohol and heart disease? How can wine consumption decrease the risk of certain cancers? What did the Mayo Clinic study find about the relationship between women and red wine? How does the concept of absolute risk versus relative risk contribute to sensational headlines? What's the connection between folate and cancer risk and how does alcohol consumption affect this dynamic? How might wine protect against cognitive decline and dementia? Why does wine play such an important part in the longevity puzzle for certain populations? What is the surprising relationship between wine consumption and inflammation? Why does Tony believe the World Health Organization's 2023 declaration that no level of alcohol consumption is safe is rooted in an anti-alcohol agenda rather than evidence? What's happening with alcohol-labeling legislation in Ireland, and how might it spread to other countries? What were the problems with the controversial drinking guidelines proposed in Canada, and where did they come from?   Key Takeaways Folate is depleted by alcohol. Harvard researchers discovered that if you give women folate in supplement form, women drinkers will reduce their risk of breast cancer massively to the extent of wiping out the risk. Wine helps protect against cognitive decline and dementia. According to a large Swedish study that showed that women who drank wine exclusively had a 75% reduced risk of Alzheimer's. Some organizations make extreme recommendations for eliminating alcohol consumption altogether, despite the research showing otherwise and Tony thinks the problem is that they find the idea of the J curve very difficult to explain.   About Tony Edwards Former BBC science documentary producer/director/writer. Now specializing in medical research journalism, Tony Edwards is a former BBC TV producer/ director/ writer, with over 80 science documentaries to his credit, some winning awards from such bodies as the British Medical Association. Have the health risks of moderate wine consumption been grossly overstated? How does moderate wine consumption reduce heart disease? What is the ideal amount and pattern of wine consumption for maximum health benefits, and how does it differ between men and women? In this episode of the Unreserved Wine Talk podcast, I'm chatting with author Tony Edwards. You can find the wines we discussed at https://www.nataliemaclean.com/winepicks   Giveaway Three of you will win a copy of his terrific new book, The Very Good News About Wine. Good luck!   Highlights How did Tony's experience as a BBC producer and a medical columnist shape his approach to researching and writing about wine? Why does Tony believe the glycemic index is more accurate than the calorie theory for measuring food values? What impact does alcohol have on your insulin response? What does research show about the benefits of dry wine for diabetics? What motivated Tony to revisit the topic of alcohol and health a decade after his first book, The Good News About Booze? Which aspects of synthesizing decades of research on wine and health did Tony find most challenging? Why was wine prescribed in UK hospitals and by physicians during the Prohibition era in North America? What is the ideal amount and pattern of wine consumption for maximum health benefits? How does the J-curve demonstrate the extent of the health benefits of wine for heart health and diabetes? Does the alcohol in wine influence its health benefits? What are the health implications of non-alcoholic wines compared to moderate consumption of regular wine?   Key Takeaways Tony explains that the alcohol consumption guidelines are completely the inverse of what the evidence says. He wondered why the guidelines were being reduced to a level that actually no one benefits from moderate wine consumption. Study after study shows wine is really good news. Tony observes that it's actually the collection of polyphenols in wine that have the beneficial effect rather than simply resveratrol alone. It's the interaction of these polyphenols with each other that produces a benefit. Tony notes that a study in 2018 came to the conclusion that for men, the maximum optimum intake of wine per day was 60 grams, which is about two-thirds of the bottle, and for women, half that.   About Tony Edwards Former BBC science documentary producer/director/writer. "Prevention is better than cure” is a fundamental principle of modern healthcare. In this episode of the Next Five, in paid partnership with GSK, we look at health care prevention in ageing societies, with a particular focus on vaccine uptake. Ever since 1796, when Dr. Edward Jenner inoculated an 8-year-old boy against smallpox with a vaccine containing the milder strain cowpox, vaccination has become a part of the preventative medicine armoury. Vaccines have lowered the impact of many diseases, and benefits go beyond the health of the individual by reducing the cost and burden placed on healthcare systems and society. The COVID-19 pandemic placed a fresh spotlight on vaccines, highlighting the need but also, in some instances, the ambivalence towards them. By 2030, the number of people aged 60 and over will have increased by more than a third to 1.4 billion people. Even with the lessons learnt from the pandemic, low adult immunisation uptake remains a global problem that needs urgent solutions. In this episode I speak with Kate Hashey, Director of Communications and Government Affairs at GSK, who leads their adult immunisation work and discusses the role vaccinations play in the healthy ageing of our societies and how we must bolster action in the future to embed adult immunisation as the standard of care . Murray Aitken, Executive Director of the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science, highlights hyperlocal data showing trends in adult immunisation globally. David Sinclair, Chief Executive Officer at the International Longevity Centre in the UK, offers insight into how we can live longer, healthier lives and where the UK sits compared to other countries on preventative healthcare spending and solutions.Sources: FT Resources, European Commission, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, British Medical Association, OECD, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. This content is produced in partnership with the Financial Times' Commercial Department Hosted on Acast. Women in medicine are often undervalued and taken less seriously than their male counterparts. They're also made to feel less safe at work, and encounter pushback when they make a complaint. This week's guest is Professor Dame Jane Dacre, and the episode is recorded in partnership with the Physician Mums Facebook Group (PMGUK). In her discussion with Rachel, Dame Jane lays out what needs to change at structural and interpersonal levels. She invites members of the industry to shine a light on inappropriate behaviour and develop a zero-tolerance approach towards sexism and misconduct. She also describes ways in which leadership courses, mentoring, and resources can be provided to empower women to advance in their careers. And she encourages men and women to be allies, speak up against inequality, and support each other in challenging situations. This discussion follows up on the 2020 report into the gender pay gap chaired by Dame Jane, and while progress is happening, women are still undervalued and face barriers to success. But by raising awareness about the gaps in pay and authority, we can create an environment where everyone is valued and has equal opportunities to thrive.⭐️ Work Well Webinars Listen to this episode toLearn about the efforts being made to address the gender pay gap in medicine and the progress that has been made so farUnderstand the concept of the authority gap and its impact on women in various fieldsGain insights into the importance of supporting and empowering women in the workplace and taking collective action to challenge cultural norms and inequalitiesEpisode highlights[00:05:23] Follow-up on the gender pay gap report[00:08:12] Addressing sexual misconduct in medicine[00:09:56] Expectations of women in medicine[00:14:17] The authority gap[00:16:33] Finding allies[00:20:42] Systemic failures leading to women not being heard[00:24:08] Everyday misconduct[00:26:27] Jane's story[00:30:07] The benefits of a non-linear career[00:37:09] The importance of authenticity and kindness[00:37:51] Sponsorship over mentoring[00:38:35] Maternal guilt[00:42:28] A letter to Jane's younger selfAbout the guestProfessor Dame Jane Dacre is an Emeritus Professor of Medical Education at UCL. — In the history of mankind, hypnosis has been used for healing purposes for thousands of years. People have long known that their thoughts can influence their bodies' functions and behavior. In most cases, hypnosis has been mistakenly labeled a mystic practice. Using hypnosis, humans can change their beliefs and the commands they have given to their subconscious minds. For pain management and for the treatment of mental illness, hypnosis was used during World War 2 and the Korean War. In 1955, the British Medical Association recommended the use of hypnosis during childbirth. Several medical schools and post-graduate programs recommended instruction in hypnosis after the American Medical Association recognized hypnosis as a field of study on Sept. 13, 1958. Many countries around the world, including the royal family, have used hypnosis during childbirth since the 1950s.  The popularity of hypnosis continues to grow. In neuroscience, cutting edge research shows that hypnosis exists. Hypnosis is becoming increasingly accepted as a technique for improving a wide range of personal aspects in life through change work. The treatment is completely natural and free of drugs. On 5 July 1948, the UK's National Health Service began as part of a series of reforms with the aim of supporting and protecting Britain's citizens from the “cradle to the grave”. The architect of the NHS was the health minister in the post-war Labour party government, Aneurin Bevan. The care was to be free for all and paid for by taxation. The birth of the NHS was not without controversy, the British Medical Association worried that doctors would be turned into civil servants. On the same day that the NHS was born, John Marks qualified as a doctor. Dr Marks spoke to Louise Hidalgo about the early days of the NHS in this programme first broadcast in 2009. At the same time, Labour leader Sir Kier Starmer has warned the NHS will “die” without drastic change. But it's not just industrial action in the health service the government is up against; teachers plan to walk out in February too and rows across the transport network are among those ongoing. Is there a way forward to end strikes across different areas of the public sector? And do unions think Labour have a better plan for the health service? On this edition of the Sophy Ridge on Sunday podcast, interviews with transport secretary Mark Harper, Labour's shadow Northern Ireland secretary Peter Kyle and chair of the British Medical Association, Dr Philip Banfield – plus, analysis with Sky's political correspondent Liz Bates and show editor Scott Beasley. Also, Sophy interviews Ukrainian MP Lesia Vasylenko after a deadly missile attack in Dnipro, a city in central Ukraine. Annie Joyce – senior podcast producer Dave Terris - editor

High Truths on Drugs and Addiction
Episode #57 High Truths on Drugs and Addiction with Sir Robin Murray and Cannabis Induced Schizophrenia

High Truths on Drugs and Addiction

What is the relationship of cannabis/ marijuana with psychosis and schizophrenia? Learn from the father of schizophrenia research, Professor Sir Robin Murray. Sir Robin Murray, FMedSci FRS Professor Sir Robin Murray is a Professor of Psychiatric Research at the Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), King's College London and a Fellow of the Royal Society. He is ranked as one of the most influential researchers in psychiatry by Thomson Reuters’ Science Watch and 3rd in schizophrenia research. He is one of only 5 psychiatrists ever elected as Royal Society Fellows. In 2011, he was awarded a Knighthood for services to medicine. He has won most of the major prizes in psychiatry and has been honored with awards from countries throughout the world including the USA, Germany, Finland, Italy, Brazil and Denmark. In 2005, he was chosen as one of the top role models in medicine by the British Medical Association. Murray is the recipient of the Schizophrenia International Research Society (SIRS) Lifetime Achievement Award for 2020. His work challenged the prevailing view of schizophrenia as an adult-onset brain disease, instead demonstrating that it is in part a neurodevelopmental disorder fueled by insults to the brain during early life. He has identified that environmental and social factors are of great importance in determining susceptibility to psychosis. He found that migrants to the United Kingdom have a much greater incidence of psychosis than their counterparts back home, which appears largely due to social adversity. Robin also identified an increased risk of schizophrenia following heavy use of cannabis, particularly in adolescence, and often speaks publicly about this. He currently researches the molecular effects of THC, the main psychotogenic ingredient of cannabis, and another component known as CBD, which appears to partly block the effects of THC; the high THC/CBD ratio in modern skunk cannabis carries more risk than traditional marijuana. Robin is now most interested in the interaction between predisposing genes and environmental factors in causing psychosis. He treats patients within the National Psychosis Unit at the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust. Professor Sir Robin Murray graduated in medicine at University of Glasgow in 1968 and began his training in psychiatry in 1972 at the Maudsley Hospital in London.  He started researching at the IoP in 1975 where he has, for the most part, remained ever since.
