The New York Mets let a golden opportunity to extend their division lead on Sunday, as they got shutout and wasted a great start by Max Scherzer. Still, it was a net positive of a weekend overall as they won three of four and took another series. Host Ryan Finkelstein recaps all the action, including another remarkable start by David Peterson. Could he be in line to take the ball for a playoff start come October? Also with Mychal Givens continued struggles, is there any hope for this Mets pen to get better over the final month of the season? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! The Chicago Cubs had an interesting trade deadline, acquiring three pitchers in Hayden Wesneski (from the New York Yankees for reliever Scott Effross), Ben Brown (from the Philadelphia Phillies for closer David Robertson) and Saul Gonzalez (from the New York Mets for reliever Mychal Givens), but most notably *NOT* trading catcher Willson Contreras and outfielder Ian Happ. We discuss the overall philosophies of this farm system, including developing tons of pitching with cut-ride fastballs and gyrospin sliders and finding hitters that are defensively versatile that hit for power and put the ball in the air. We close with some players to keep an eye on, like RHP Daniel Palencia, 1B Matt Mervis, and RHP Jeremiah Estrada.  Find and follow LockedOn MLB Prospects on your favorite podcast platforms: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-mlb-prospects/id1525225214 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wzJIf26tGgVbB7rsoKyLD Stitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-mlb-prospects Follow along with LockedOn MLB Prospects host Lindsay Crosby as we follow 120+ affiliated teams throughout the 2022 season! Hour 1 Gio & Sal begin a Thursday morning show asking what the local baseball teams have to accomplish this season in order for fans to be satisfied. For the Yankees, it's making the World Series. The bar for the Mets is a little lower, but they need to have a run in the postseason. The Mets are in the midst of a better season than most people realize and the Yankees have some problems, but how big are they? Mets history is filled with so much losing and Gio says he would be obnoxious if he rooted for the Yankees. C-Lo is in for Jerry and gets us started with a highlight of Daniel Vogelbach's first Mets home run, a grand slam in a 9-5 win over the Nationals. Mychal Givens made his Met debut and struggled, to put it lightly. Sal doesn't want to hear about travel and short turn-arounds. The Yankees' Wednesday afternoon game wasn't as kind to them as Gerrit Cole allowed three home runs and six total runs in the first inning of a 7-3 loss. Andrew Benintendi is off to a slow start and the Padres new acquisitions are already thriving. In the final segment of the hour, Gio and Sal wonder if they can follow Aaron Rodgers's lead and do ayahuasca. Hour 2 The 7am hour starts with Gio and Sal discussing the news that the NFL will appeal Deshaun Watson's suspension in an attempt to increase it. Sal and Gio agree that fans are tired of hearing about off-field legal cases. CLo returns and begins the update with a Pete Alonso home run. Buck Showalter was in a strange mood and Chris Bassitt loves Luis Guillorme's defense. Gerrit Cole was blasted by the Mariners in a 7-3 Yankees loss. Football is back as the Hall of Fame game is tonight. In the final segment of the hour, the guys discuss Gerrit Cole's bad start and whether or not he's a true “ace” that can be counted on in October. Who is the best starter the Yankees have and who can they count on for the postseason? Gio wonders if Brian Cashman is happy with how things worked out and the Yankees landing Frankie Montas instead of giving up more for Luis Castillo. Sal recalls running into Cashman in an airport. Hour 3 The 8am hour opens with Sal explaining how he plans to spend his night alone in the city. Sal will meet callers this weekend and sometimes worries about potential encounters. Sal believes the Mets are better than the Braves and will prove it this weekend. Gio agrees, it's time to send a message. CLo returns to update us, but first, the guys talk about getting to Yankee Stadium and wanting an October with playoff baseball and competitive football. The Mets beat the Nationals, Daniel Vogelbach hit a grand slam and Gio is impressed by the Mets' new big slugger. CLo also has a clip from Philly where they discuss touching hard wood. In the final segment of the hour, Gio shares how his wife informed him that she hired an attractive housekeeper.  Hour 4 The 9am hour begins with Gio and Sal saying we're entering crunch time for baseball. The Mets have a huge series against the Braves this weekend. The Yankees have to prove once and for all they are better than the Astros. Gio says home-field advantage rarely matters, but it does for the Yankees and Astros. Sal and Gio think this Mets team is for real and Sal did not feel that way about some good Met teams of the past. Would the Yankees be better off with home-field advantage in a potential ALCS against Houston or an easier matchup in the ALDS? Are the Yankees aggressive enough in their attempts to win? CLo is back for his final update of the show and begins with a Mets win and a Yankee loss. Recent comments by Aaron Rodgers have the guys confused and re-evaluating their lives. Then, a Moment of the Day about touching hard wood. In the final segment of the show, Gio talks about his expectations at a Walker Hayes concert tonight.

First, the Mets acquired Darin Ruf to complement Daniel Vogelbach at DH, as the 36-year-old has been one of the best lefty-mashers in baseball since 2020. New York then added to their bullpen by landing Mychal Givens in a trade with the Chicago Cubs. MLB – Major League Baseball Yesterday Detroit Tigers 17, Minnesota Twins 14 Kansas City Royals 3, Chicago White Sox 2 – F/10 Innings Cincinnati Reds 8, Chicago Cubs 2 Tigers 17, Twins 14 – Lions-Vikings? Naw, Tigers top Twins by NFL-like 17-14 final Jeimer Candelario and Eric Haase each drove in three runs and the Detroit Tigers, despite giving up seven homers and not hitting any, outlasted the Minnesota Twins 17-14. Detroit led 10-0 in the fourth in an MLB game that wound with a score more fitting for an NFL matchup between the Lions and Vikings. After the Tigers scored eight times in the top of the fourth, Minnesota got six runs in the bottom half, highlighted by Ryan Jeffers' grand slam. Down 13-6, the Twins scored six more in the eighth on Miguel Sanó's second homer of the game and drives by Max Kepler, Brent Rooker and Jeffers. Haase's three-run double in the ninth gave the Tigers another cushion. Jorge Polanco hit a two-run homer in the Twins ninth. Royals 3, White Sox 2 – F/10 – Royals beat White Sox 3-2 on Taylor's 2-out single in 10th Michael A. Taylor's two-out single in the bottom of the 10th inning drove Hunter Dozier home from second base as the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2. The Royals had tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth when Salvador Perez hit his 24th homer, a solo shot to left-center off AL saves leader Liam Hendriks. Scott Barlow, who took over in the 10th as the fifth Royals pitcher, struck out two and walked one. Ryan Burr pitched the final inning for Chicago. Reds 8, Cubs 2 – Votto extends power surge, Reds roll past Cubs 8-2 Joey Votto homered twice for the second consecutive day, going deep in his fifth straight game to match a Cincinnati record as the Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 8-2. Tyler Mahle tossed six scoreless innings for the Reds, who beefed up their bullpen again by acquiring right-hander Mychal Givens from Colorado before the game. Tyler Stephenson and Shogo Akiyama each had two RBIs, and Jesse Winker doubled twice and drove in a run. The 37-year-old Votto is the ninth hitter in Reds history, dating to 1900, to homer in five straight games. It was his 15th career multi-homer game. Campbell says he didn't sleep at all, but said he has plenty of energy. The former New Orleans Saints assistant head coach was emotionally charged six-plus months ago when he was introduced as the new Lions coach after signing a six-year contract.
