Oscar Gonzalez wins this one for the Cleveland Guardians. I explain I do not hate him, or wish any ill will. The Guardians have so few right-handed bats I very much want him to be extremely successful. We also look at some old friend alerts across the league as several players have been on the move. We talk about the weird situation that has led to the Angel's failures and wonder aloud if the Guardians should cash in prospect capital to try and acquire Shohei Ohtani for a rental for next year with the knowledge that a draft pick would also be returned when he inevitably left. Is it worth the cost to acquire to help push this team over? Not to mention the eyes, excitement, and ticket/gear sales it would lead to. We dig into the win, a game the Guardians maybe got a little lucky to win. The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim had a ton of walks but they were not able to put anything together to get more than one run across. We also find out that Emmanuel Clase has the lowest ERA in the history of the MLB for any player with more than 50 appearances, that is pretty darn good. We look at some numbers for the Cleveland Guardians. We spend a lot of time on who produces in the minors, and about the good and bad of game-to-game performance. But I realized we really haven't discussed the year-round numbers just in terms of who has been the top producers on this team. The big takeaways Franmil Reyes was maybe let go too quickly, there are signs of hope for Myles Straw, there are reasons to bet on Oscar Gonzalez, and Nolan Jones was better when he was up than he got credit for. We start the podcast with a focus on the Guardians losing three of four to the Mariners. We dig into stats and talk about Owen Miller. Miller in April and March was one of the best hitters on the team. Since then he has struggled with his bat and depending on the stats his glove. We talk about reverse splits and why it is that Miller is part of the team's continued struggles against left handers. We also can't help but focus on the success Franmil Reyes has found in Chicago as he is exactly what this team needs right now. We talk about the overall frustration of the loss on Friday night. It was a game where the Guardians left the winning run on third three innings in a row. They often left the runner there with more than one out. This game was one that felt like they were going to lose, as the offense just could not get it going consistently. We end by looking at the Sunday loss where the offense was offensive and the Saturday win which saw them pick up one win in this series. The truth is the offense was really unproductive and things do not get easier with the Baltimore Orioles on deck and the Seattle Mariners in the hole as the Cleveland Guardians hold onto a narrow lead in the division. They are up just two games over the Minnesota Twins and the division still stands their best path to the playoffs. Morris is striking out nearly 18 per nine right now. The only question with Morris is health, but there is no doubt he has major-league stuff. We talk about some other standout pitchers in terms of players of the week in the minors. We discuss the emergence of Mason Hickman as a reliever extraordinaire. The former starter has found a new life as a reliever this season. We also discuss an interesting quote on Will Benson that makes me wonder if he is viewed as a central part of this team or more of a depth piece moving forward. We discuss what changed for Franmil Reyes since he left Cleveland, and why it is that he has gained success so quickly in a new setting. It was a very busy weekend for the Cleveland Guardians who split the four-game series with the Houston Astros despite not having one of their best starters set up to go. I was told all week this team could not compete with the Astros but in the end, they did. We talk about the brilliance of Emmanuel Clase. The utter dominance of Triston McKenzie. We also discussed Hunter Gaddis, the 13th Guardian to make their debut this year, and the pitcher I hoped would get the call on Friday. I explain why I think he is a future 10-year player in the majors. We quickly talk about the three games of the week before focusing on Sunday and the performances there. Triston McKenzie after his struggles in June has elevated into a legit front-line starter. Was I the only one that was sad that Steven Kwan got pinch hit and saw his streak end on Friday? We also talk about why Jake Jewell was added to the roster and why he is likely to have a very short stay on the 40-man. We end by first discussing where the standings have the Guardians both in the division and the Wild Card. The Guardians still have a better chance at the division than the Wild Card. Then of course we get into Franmil Reyes. We talk about what has occurred over the last three years which might have made the organization decide to move on from what this team needs: a power hitter from the right side with multiple years of control. This was not a result of just one bad year, this team loves to buy low on players so there is more going on. We try to explain why this shocker occurred, what it means, and why it was likely best for everyone.
