Each year the National Excellence in Teaching Awards honour four early childhood, primary and secondary school educators from around the motu. This year Nga Hau e Wha Resource Teacher of Learning and Behaviour Amie Roberts won both the Apple Award, and a Teacher Mentor Special Award, for her work in implementing Structured Literacy into schools around Wellington. Her own journey into specialising in teaching structured literacy came from watching her own son struggle to read. She tells Kathryn her story.

So bright in fact, she's taken out two top honours in the National Excellence in Teaching Awards - the Outstanding Mentor Award and Founders' Principals Award for Leadership. Leanne Otene has been a principal for 26 years, 15 of them at her current school, Manaia View in Whangarei. She talks to Kathryn about her team, tamariki and their whanau.

He also serves as Chair for the Department of Management in the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration and academic director for entrepreneurship. With more than 30 years as an entrepreneur in for-profit, non-profit, and public sector environments, Mike describes himself as the “living example” that entrepreneurship is a process that can be applied in any setting and he truly “thinks like an owner.” As someone who likes to challenge his students in and out of the classroom, Mike is viewed as an innovative and demanding teacher that brings the reality of entrepreneurship into the classroom. Liz Roadifer writes in two completely different worlds. One work is dark thrillers. The other is romantic fantasy. It’s the romantic fantasy that’s making news. Liz recently learned that The Trouble With Fairies won a National Excellence in Romance Fiction Award in a major contest sponsored by First Coast Romance Writers. As you’ll hear, it took a fair amount of persistence and working through dashed hopes to reach the point where she has a major national award on her shelf. Besides writing novels, Liz Roadifer is a poet, columnist, and teacher. Her work has been published in newspapers, magazines, and literary journals. Born and raised in New Jersey, Liz attended the University of Wyoming and fell in love with the wide-open sky, the high plains, and the friendly laid-back people of Wyoming. David has been a passionate and highly regarded early childhood educator for 23 years. He has worked mainly with four and five year old children and their families, in both government and independent settings in the ACT and Tasmania and has been awarded a National Excellence in Teaching award for Innovation in Early Childhood education. David has been inspired by the Reggio Emilia educational project for many years and has been fortunate enough to have participated in Study Tours to this Italian city on three occasions. He is currently convener of the Tasmanian Reggio Emilia Network and has presented, consulted and written widely and frequently on issues of education.
